The cheaper edicion is horrible
I bought theWheeler's Dental Anatomy, Physiology and Occlusion thinking that I was buying a pretty new edicion of a book with a CD and color pictures. What I recieved at home was an old book with horrible black and white pictures and an awful redaction. I don't know how newest edition is, but I am shure that this old one is almost not a text book.

What a Dental Anatomy Book Should Not Be Without
Unfortunately some of the reviewers are steeped in subjective reality and probably the users and promoters of another dental anatomy text. In a period of evidence based dental education and practice, a book without much of a refernce base is outdated; a book with out a CD is outdated; a book without a good index is hardly useful; a book without the latest information on dental anatomy is outdated; and a book without facts to build on is no book at all.
Wheeler is no Netter!
This book is wordy and lacks organization. It is full of awkward sentences, rambling paragraphs and has no sense of continuity. The diagrams are not labeled, of low quality and seemingly outdated. There are much better anatomy references out there and I suggest looking into the other literature. Wheeler's text simply demonstrates the need for a Frank Netter of sorts- someone who can do for Oral Anatomy what Dr. Netter did for Gross Anatomy. I'm actually considering writing my own text one day so that future students will be able to spend more time focusing on anatomy rather than the minutia and distractions that this book is full of. This is a well intentioned book, plagued with errors.
We recently used this book in a dental hygiene program and found it very frustrating.The self instructional format was fairly well plotted out, and the intentions of the book as a program of study were admirable. However, as a class, we found many errors and contradictions in the text. My personal advice would be to wait for a next edition when more throughediting has been accomplished.

A good introduction into dental anatomy.
This book is an excellent resource for anyone wishing an introduction tothe topic of dental anatomy.I think any first year dental student wouldfind this especially helpful.The text is divided up into modules, andthen into frames, with the answers to questions within the frames locatedin the margin.The book is very good about reinforcing terms that may notbe familiar to the beginning student of dentistry or to the layman. However, I do not recommend this book for someone who has had a course indental anatomy.I initially bought the book as a study aid for part one ofthe dental national boards.Having had dental anatomy coursework, as wellas other courses which used the same information as a foundation, I foundthe reinforcement of terms I already knew to be rather tedious.I thinkthat if I had found it before starting dental school though, it would havebeen much more valuable to me. ... Great Book
I bought this book as a review material for NBDE , It has better text and much more useful photoes, pics and morphlogical outlines than Wheelers, Just skip the head and neck anatomy part and start with dental anatomy section, there is only one regret about this book , occlusion part is not enough for new NBDE , Overall Its well worth the money.

Open Wide
The book opens by summarising head and neck and then oral anatomy before moving onto the main subject of tooth morphology. It then has chapters on eruption, occlusion, dental abnormalities, operative and forensic dentistry. It seems mainly tailored to the pre-clinical student but also provides lots of information about the clinical relevance of anatomy. It also contains many practical exercises that would be of use to a clinical student, like a guide to extra-oral palpation.The bulk of the book (5 chapters on tooth morphology) contains if anything too much information, leaving the reader rather overloaded with facts. It handles the examination of extracted teeth in a logical fashion and would be useful in practical lab sessions. It also contains quizzes and tear-out sheets about tooth morphology. The other chapters in the book make for good introductions to the various subjects, with some excellent diagrams, but do not really cover the depth of knowledge required (e.g. about head and neck anatomy). However, a textbook that summarises many different subjects is certainly a more cost-effective buy than getting 7 or 8 more complete texts. Parts of the book are genuinely interesting. The chapter on dental abnormalities contains the case of a dental exchange student with 23 upper teeth, including 13 molars. Also the chapter on forensics gives an insight into something not normally discussed on the BDS course. In general, quite a good pre-clinical textbook ideal for a student interested in tooth morphology.

the method being strenthened to dental anatomy
I was able to meet this book two years ago,when I was a 1st year of dental school. In that time, I don't know the merits of this book. but when I became 2nd, 3rd years, I was able to find that this book made me strengthento anatomy. this book contain so many informations about an anatomic viewsincluding periodontics,endodontics, minor surgery... Especially rootmorphorlogy is very useful in endodontics. If you read and take this bookas a reference, you will be good at many clinical subjects includingEndodontics, periodontics, some prosthodontics, and minor surgery. Wait for the next addition...
While this book is a great help to undergraduate dental students, it does fall short in the incredibly specific structural identifications dental gross anatomy classes call for.However, I have seen the next addition which should be coming out soon and it is greatly improved-especially when it comes to bones (and specific structures) of the head.So buy it now if you are taking a gross anatomy course....but if you can afford to wait, then buy it later when the next addition is available. ... Great Book
I bought this book for first year dental.This book has the best pictures and dissections. It is very detailed yet easy to read.I highly recommend it.

A reference "must" for holistic appreciation of teeth.
Berkovitz and coworkers provide pictures, pictures, pictures of exquisite quality. There is no more successful method for teaching histology than through numerous sections coupled with a de-emphasis on description. This text is like having a microscope at your fingertips and pre-dental/medical and graduate students rave about the book. Given the embryological format, the macro and micro portions dovetail quite well. Some dissapointing picture quality of head and neck structures and dental gross anatomy photographs are too small to grasp occlusal morphology. The comparative mammalian dental anatomy section is nice.Missing only is exposure to forensic odontology as applied responsibility for both clinician and academician to explore.

Useful textbook for dental educators and researchers.
I found this text useful as a reference text as a dental educator.It is comprehensive and the color histological references are very clearly presented.The photographs of the teeth, as well as the gross anatomical sections, seem slightly out of focus in this edition.Information is presented with references that are further useful and up to date, especially when considering research in the hard dental and neural tissues.I refer to it constantly in my studies. ...
