4-0 out of 5 stars Dental Assistant
This book is very good. After being a chairside dental assistant for twenty years and on the job training, this is excellent for training someone in from scratch (which I am about to do). It is very detailed in some areas that an assistant does not necessarily use, but answers the mental questions about the Doctors procedures that one might never ask. It also teaches the basics and the in depth information that one would learn and want to refer back to that evening to review. It is a great book to have "before" you begin the job, so once you begin, you can understand the what and the why of the procedure. You will need to practice the hands on techniques that the book illistrates, and you will be on a roll! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a Book - a must BUY
The author takes an revolutionary approach to restoring anterior teeth, a Biomimetic approach. The author goes back to basics and studies nature i.e. the form and function of natural teeth. He then studies how each tissue (dentine/enamel) behaves mechanically (when loaded) and where the forces and stresses concentrate. These findings then lay the foundation as to how teeth should be restored i.e. should they be restored so they are as strong as nature (mimic natures strength) or stronger. The author tends to favour the former approach, and goes about outlining materials and design principles that will achieve this result. He presents an extremely interesting method and commonsense approach to restoring teeth.By reading this book, it allows us to reflect upon the potential disasters (verticle root fractures, decorination) that may be caused by restoring teeth in the traditional way (crowns & posts) whereby making them stronger than nature.

5-0 out of 5 stars You must have this book
This book is a must have if you enjoy doing bonded porcelain restorations and you want to see how a master does it. The lab work is unbelievable and the photography is excellent. Its like having an Ansel Adams book: you have to see how the best do it so that you have something to aspire to.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Took entirely to long to get book!!
I purchased the book Aug.28. Why should I have to pay for 2-3 day shipping when I just got the book 1 week ago!! I will never order from Amazon again. The only positive thing about it was the book was in the shape described.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very worth the money
I found the sample questions and rationales invaluable on the national board (passed in the hight 90's), yes the chapters are long and dry, but if you only do the tests, you WILL get you money's worth. We are here tolearn are we not?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great source!
This book is wonderful. The first few chapters especially, taught me so much about the anatomy and mechanics of the TMJ. This book is a great addition to a dentist's library!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but overpriced
I believe this bood does a very good job in explaining the functional aspects of occlusion and the TM joint. My only concern is that for the price, I would expect a book with color photographs and maybe even a CD-rom.That being said, I think the information and organization is great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Something for everyone!
This book is an enormous help and reference to me whenever I have to do the family's teeth (I find it saves money - my wife does the haircuts), though there are some issues around acute temporomandibular disorders and chronic pain management that I do not feel are fully addressed.I fully agree with the reviewer from Columbia. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars LOVED IT
I had to get this book for school, and I am glad that I had to get it because I used it so much, in every class, referenced it many times for homework assignments and for term papers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Wilkins is amazing!
I attended a lecture given by Dr. Wilkins and had my 8th edition text autographed. She is a vivacious, wonderful woman and gave me the refresher I needed. The book is a wonderful part of what it means to be a dental hygienist. To see so many different editions (and so many matching gel pens) carried into the lecture hall was amazing.Truly a book treasured by the prudent dental hygienist.

5-0 out of 5 stars A leading text for Dental Hygiene
Now in its 9th edition, Clinical Practice of the Dental Hygienist retains its standing as a leading text for dental hygiene.Readers of this text will find it useful as an initial source of information for some topics and as a supplemental source for others.Chapters devoted to core content (as dental radiography) can be used as either an overview to a separate course in the curriculum, or for summary and review upon completion of that separate course. The chapters in Section VII Patients with Special Needs offer accurate introductions and overviews for a wide variety of special needs individuals and contain current information grounded in recognized and authoritative sources. An extensive listing of resources follows each chapter, encouraging further pursuit of scope and depth as desired.A dental hygiene educator for 24 years, my first encounter with Clinical Practice of the Dental Hygienist was the 2nd edition of this text 34 years ago; today's 9th edition continues to be a valuable inclusion in the professional library of any dental hygiene student or working dental hygiene professional. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars First modern educational tool in dental health for children.
This is the first book of its kind.It focuses on the dental education of children. It is a complete lesson planner that can be fully integrated in the classroom along with school's other subjects. If children can learn totake care of their teeth the proper way, they can save themselves and theirparents a lot of trouble down the line. What impressed me most about thebook was how much information was in it.People usually go to the dentisttwice a year and they think they are fine. After reading this book, one cansee that people are really not educated at all about proper dental health. This book teaches in terms that everyday people can understand that thereis a proper and simple way to excellent dental health besides going to thedentist. It also gives good background to why the techniques we use todayare so helpful.Even a good dentist does not go into the background or gointo what needs to be done for proper dental health because that is nottheir job.I would not be surprised if many dentists and their assistantsall over the proffession would endorse this piece of educational material. This book should be a common reference material at every dentist office, school, and home. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Needs better editing!
The content is detailed, informative and sometimes repetitive, but please work on the presentation! One would think that by the 7th edition, most of the mistakes in this textbook would have been corrected. I've seen numerous spelling errors and typos, as well as missing figures. This gives it a really unprofessional look, despite all the diagrams and the "easy to read style". The editors should take a course in spelling and typing. If they do not have the time to do so, they should consider spending a few minutes to find out how the spellcheck option works. Proper spelling and grammar are very important, especially for an educational material such as a textbook. Hopefully the eighth edition will turn out to be a bit better.

I'm in family medicine and encounter oral pathology on a regular basis. This book can't be beat for the purpose of recognition and diagnosis of oral diseases. Excellent photographs and explanations cover the full gamut of pathology likely to be encountered, and arranged according to useful diagnostic schemes - by type, color, location, etc. Even contains an extensive quiz at the end to test your mastery. I liked it so much I bought another one for my dental hygienist wife (who also loves it). ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars This book needs some corrections!
I purchased this book along with a few others to practice for the CDA exam. Most of the information was pretty good, but I found a lot of mistakes. Some of the answers are wrong and if I hadn't gone to school then I wouldn't have known the difference. Overall it is ok, but if you don't already have a vast knowledge of dental assisting then I would recommend a different guide.

MONEY WELL SPENT! I thought this book was very helpful. It covered everything. I was very happy with the information presented. A large amount of information that I studied in the book was on the exam. I have already recommended it to two other people.

I thought the exam at the end of the book was a good refresher and the end of the chapter review was helpful.I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is about to take the National Board. ...
