Hypothyroidism Review - Excellent Information
I found this book to be very informative and factual.For those of us living with Hypothyroidism, this is an excellent book.P.S.Find a doctor who will listen to your symptoms as a whole and not try to treat each symptom individually, such as the book carefully guides you.Be persistent in your search, as there are actually doctors out there who WILL listen and take the time to help, rather than succumbing to the HMO drive thru approach, as my first "primary" care physician did -- stating that my blood levels were NORMAL, when in fact they were not.Be educated in your condition -- as there are treatment options which will bring you out of your "fog and fatigue" and make you feel like a real person again.

useful but waiting for the new edition
I found this book is useful for all the cardiology trainee as it is wellwritten, easy to understood and there is many figures.However, it did notmention the new technology in the field of echocardiography such as thetissue doppler, contrast echo.I hope the next edition will include thisand the illustrations will be more colorful.

Excellent resource
This text is a fantastic resource for the practitioner new to the treatment of venous diseases.It is an indispensible tool in setting up a phlebology practice.The appendices of office practice tools (i.e.-eval forms, consents, manufacturers) was a wonderful suprise.Bravo!

The best book avialable for the subject at this time.
Dr. Goldman covers the topic from A-Z. He cover both the smaller (spider) and larger verins in his book which is not a large volume despite its price. He provides the young physician with a concise, orderly manner with whihc to approach the problems in his practice, the tools, medications, methodology and and the forms both for record keeping and legal implications. No question that it works.
I found this book after googling a bunch of different things, and came across these reviews.Lots of good reviews, a few negative ones.Well, I noticed that all the negative ones were either people who hadn't actually tried it or people who didn't really stick with it.You can't rate a book negatively if you don't follow the program.
Excellent book!!!
I highly recommend this book, it works and it's the BEST.Even though I hadn't followed most of the recommendations like the enemas and baths it still worked for me just due to the diet change.What I would suggest also is to try to personalize it more, by finding out what works for you with diet.. mostly concerning laxatives, as for me most of them perscribed didnt' work (I guess my system is quite hard) so I explored around and found out that for me things like fresh papaya, dry figs, dates, eggs, and moloukhia (a green spinach like plant popular in the middle east) also other foods that are cleansing and remove toxins are good to increase, then decreasing the starches and adding more fruits, veggies and such foods into the diet really works.
WHAT A HORRIBLE TRICK!
For years now, my best friend and ex-boyfriend of almost four years has been suffering from severe psorasis, as well as psoriatic arthritis.He had been through several doctors and has tried multiple kinds of treatments, ranging from with or without a combination of photolight therapy, sun and water therapy, topical treatments, and systemics (Methotrexate, Soriatane, etc).A few months ago, I discovered Dr. Pagano's book and shared this information with him.After having read the book, he decided to really dedicate himself to the diet and everything Dr. Pagano had stated in the book, such as the monthly visits to Dr. Pagano, the olive oil, the flaxseed oil pills, the peanut oil baths, the 50/50 combination of the peanut oil and olive oil, etc.For a few weeks only, it worked wonderfully.It seemed to be working for him, but after those few weeks, he broke out.Dr. Pagano had stated that he would have a break out before it would get better because the "toxins" were trying to leave the body, but after his psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis kept getting worse, Dr. Pagano finally told him that he would have to go back on phototherapy and systemics (Methotrexate).For a little over two months, because of this diet, he had the worst break out ever.He literally broke out all over his body, even on his face and neck!I truly believe that this diet would work for those that are only suffering from mild to moderate psoriasis, but for those suffering from severe psoriasis, I suggest that you beware!If you see yourself breaking out too much and for too long of a period, maybe you should try a different treatment. ... Good research, disjointed storytelling
This book covers a lot of ground and Barry has done some great research.What Barry does not do is maintain a consistently engaging narrative. As others have noted, the book could have used some judicious editing.It probably could have lost 100 pages in my view.

Useful reference
This is an excellent concise introduction to cardiac catheterization.This book is now in its 4rth edition published in 2003 and includes a wealth of material on the basics of this field.650 pages encompass 10 chapters on topics such as arterial and venous acess, hemodynamic data, angiographic data, EP studies and ablation, research techniques, special techniques, high-risk cardiac catheterization, and interventional techniques.The book includes specific, how-to information.However, this short text is not intended to fully teach such advanced techniques as catheter ablation or interventional cardiology. Very useful tables and clear diagrams are included (496 illustrations).
This is a essential reference, but
I have been a cath labo nurse for 3 months.This is a nice book for cath labo staff like me, but there isn't so many figure enough to understand coronary anatomy in angiography and electorophysic study.

Safe, is it really?
In page xvii of the introduction, Dr. Amen writes "Stimulant medications such as Adderall, Ritalin, or Dexedrine are among the safest and most effective medications in psychiatry". That sounds reassuring until you read the article in Medical News Today (August 22, 2006) mentioning that "Dexedrine and Ritalin are drugs used to treat ADHD. The FDA announced changes to their labels, and possibly those of some other ADHD drugs, to include a warning of a risk of heart problems and psychotic behavior". That is not reassuring at all. This book is writing in an authoritative style - sort of the bible of ADHD, the book that tells you what it is, and how to go about it. The only problem is that it is flawed.

Dr. Amen did an excellant job of explaining ADHD and the brain based research that he's done in a way that's easy to read and understand.It's a great resourse for those looking to understand how the brain is affected by this disorder and the way a variety of treatments can be effective. ... primer on kidney disease
THIS IS AN EXCELLENT BOOK ON NEPHROLOGY, IT'S CONCISE AND VERY WELL ILLUSTRATED, PROBABLY THE BEST INTRODUCTORY BOOK ON NEPHROLOGY, BUT PROBABLY NOT AS COMPREHENSIVE AS THOSE 100 LB BOOKS.

Great text for those interested in nephrology
I am a medicine resident interested in nephrology. This book starts out with the basics of renal anatomy/physiology, approach to patients with kidney disease, and goes on to define/classify, and provide an outline for diagnosis/therapy of common kidney disorders. Its depth suits perfectly medicine residents, and probably, as others have mentioned, fellows starting their training. Those looking for a more in-depth text might consider Johnson&Feehaly's Comprehensive Clinical nephrology.

BURTON ROSE AGAIN IS EXCELLENT
FOR RESIDENT AND FELLOWS AS STAFF TOO, THE FIFTH EDITION OF BURTON ROSE IS EXCELLENT, COVERING BASIC CONCEPTS AS WELL AS ALL THE RECENT RESEARCH MEDICAL NEWS IN FHE FIELDOF FLUID AND ACID BASE PHYSIOLOGY.IT SHOULD BE RECOMENDED FOR PRIVATE AND PUBLIC MEDICAL LIBRARY.

Outstanding text, but consider "The essentials" for a lighter read
No doubt, this is a terrific textbook and is a great resource for Nephrology fellows, ICU fellows and general physiologists.However, for the med student or housestaff who would like to digest the basics of renal electrolyte handling and acid-base homeostasis, I'd like to recommend "Renal Pathophysiology the Essentials" by B.D. Rose and H.G. Rennke (ISBN: 0683073540). It is from 1994 and may lack some of the molecular details, but is an even more "readable" text.

I found this book to be very useful in understanding the subject of acid base and electrolyte disorders. Excellent Pathophysiology book
This is an excellent pathophysiology book available in the market. I am right now preparing for my step 2 but I wish I would have used this book for my step 1. I have a decent score on my step 1 and I have taken the exam recently and I think if somebody masters this book they can rock the exam. This book gives excellent information regarding many diseases. I am trying to study this book right now with CMDT, which is also by the same author. Because CMDT is a very concise text book of IM it doesn't explain all the pathophysiology for a disease but this book has all the answers about the pathophysiology of a disease. And I think its a worth buying book for all the medical students, if you study this book little by little during preclinical years it will help you very much understand the IM in the clinical years. I was surprize to find some infornation which I was craving for since few years of my med school. You will even find pathophysilogy of very rare syndromes, as for example I was amazed when I read about X linked Hypophosphatemic rickets. If you are like me who wants to have explanation behind everything, get this book today, you wan't be disappointed.

I found the book vague and unclear.It was recommended as a "reference" book for a graduate level pathophysiology course and it was the first book I returned.There are several other books on pathophysiology that are on the market for about the same price or a bit more that are MUCH more thorough and useful for undergraduate, graduate or medical student reference.I would NOT recommend this book for anyone looking at any type of indepth medical information. ... AMAZINGLY THOROUGH
Working in the field of pediatric echo there are so many wonderful things to review and learn. This book really helped me prepare for fetal boards (ARDMS) and I learned something from each chapter. There are parts that I needed some explanation for which was wonderful, but if one does not have that support this book might be over your head, as it was mine in part.

Fetal Cardiography
I think this isan excellent book for anyone performing fetal echocardiography. Limitations include limited information about Doppler flow studies and their interpretation. Also, there is limited information about how to get EF and CO on a fetus. No mention of the Tei index. Otherwise, this is a comprehensive book in understanding the pathophysiology of fetal heart. The chapter on the venous system is exceptional.

Review from a polio survivor
As a polio survivor who was caught up in the epidemic of 1952, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who had polio or was involved in the search for a solution.My mother was one of the regional directors for the Mother's March in the 1950's and is now reading the book.It is very well written and pulls no punches highlighting both positive aspects of this decades long effort and the petty politics and personalities that accompanied it.

Polio
I am a survivor of the polio epidemic of the mid forties.This is an excellent account of those days and of the people who ultimately conquered this disease and saved the lives of thousands from its ravages.

Fascinating and informative
Mr. Oshinsky's book is a well written, well researched history of the United States' struggle with poliomyelitis and the race to a vaccine. This book is a page turner, right up there with the most entertaining fiction. Oshinsky's combination of historical accounts and narration style make this book engaging for any lay person. He objectively tells us about Salk and Sabin, the two scientists whose killed- and live-virus vaccines, respectively, changed the natural course of polio and brought it close to eradication. Oshinsky also details the crucial work of many other researchers without whom the polio vaccines would never have existed, and also the important work of the National Foundation that worked tirelessly, raising money and supporting researchers; this organization is now the March of Dimes. I read this book on vacation in Puerto Rico, and I could barely put it down. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in history of vaccines, polio, or just medical innovation. ... At 1773 pages, the "Manual of Clinical Microbiology" is a good (medium size) reference for a clinical or diagnostic microbiologist. It offers detailed information on both practical and theoretical aspects of the subject. Its authority is unquestionable. This book is comprehensive, well put together and thorough in all of its aspects. It is an invaluable text in the microbiology department. I and my workplace have a copy, and it is the most often refered text in our laboratory only Bergeys and Mandell come close. All aspects including bacteriology, virology, parasitology, mycology, laboratory metheds etc etc are covered it is a one stop clinical microbiology text.
