Smallpox, Big Issue
Few writers have the talent to parlay a non-fiction work about viruses into a mass-market paperback, but Richard Preston has done it twice."The Demon in the Freezer" focuses on many scary aspects of smallpox, and delights in the details of our demise should we encounter our old foe.For us today, reading about the skin completely separating from the body due to a halo of pus is both repulsive and fascinating; but the world once had an everyday vocabulary for these symptoms.With little natural immunity left around the globe and the smallpox shot the most dangerous immunization you can take, "The Demon in the Freezer" points to a nasty vulnerability.
Just awful!
I was so excited to find this book after reading Richard Preston's other novel, The Hot Zone. I found this book to be written extremely inconsistently. While reading this book it seems as though Preston is changing from writing to a mature, educated audience to writing for an audience of five year-olds. He takes the time out to describe each new character in a bland way. His descriptions of these people consist solely of their hair and eye colors, stature, and way of speaking. WE DON'T CARE! I wish he had spent more time on the actual story instead of digressing. He also added random sections including one accusing Iraq of harboring weapons grade smallpox without proof. I was thoroughly disappointed in this novel! The only reason why I finished it was because I was too far into it to stop when I realized how much I truly hated it! If you liked The Hot Zone, don't read this, it's awful.

Truth CAN be scarier than fiction

Not a good reference book
This book was "required" reading at my med school, and NO ONE found it helpful.It had a very general overview of concepts, but was not good for a reference book or for studying for the shelf exam.As a resident, I wouldn't waste my time with it either.

The first third of the book has information for someone who is about to enter a residency.The last two thirds has chapters for someone that is about to enter their third year.I have yet to understand that reason why they included this seemingly different information in one book.It should be split into two.

Annoying!! Choppy presentation due to formatting, cartoons
It probably would be a good resource if it wasn't so annoying. Almost every single paragraph has a cutesy red-letter heading that interupts the flow of concepts. The result is a choppy presentation that interferes with reading and interpreting the material. The cartoons are over the top: almost every page has a cartoon, some pages have two. They are not funny, or purposeful, and there's so many of them that it is distracting. If you can get past all the formatting distractions, the book provides a solid basic coverage of the subject matter. I like the tables, the "Advice from the Experts" boxes, and the quizzes.It's a painful read though -- I can't get into study mode because all the distractions just overpower the content. My recommendation for the next edition: Give your target audience some respect: we can read more than one paragraph at a time! so get rid of the red-letter headings. And place the cartoons at the beginning and/or end of the chapter where they don't interfere with the reader's experience. ... Read more

This woman is pure evil,
and a sickening parasite 'The cure for a conscience' is what her next book should be titled. This a disgusting way to mislead, take advantage of and make money off those in dire need dealing with this deadly illness. I hold New Century Press and Amazon.com responsible for promoting this trash.

Outside or Inside
It seems critics usually attack because this is "outside" the accepted medical model. Have any of the critics ever read Dr. Stargell's report in the July 1998 AMA, where it is presented that the accepted medical model kills nearly as many people each year as heart disease? a report by a doctor based on research by doctors.So pehaps there is much offered outside the accepted medical model.
Freedom of making choices
I truly admire Hulda Clark for her great contribution to the human race, with her such books which I've read and applied some of her ideas.It may seem radical yet what's the defintion of "normal" anyway?While some things may not work for an individual, it may work for others.As our bodies as well as our belief systems (which seems to be more important thing than anything) respond to different things, at different stages of Life.There's no ONE way for everyone.It may take some experiment and time to get the kind of results some may seek for, in however way we may find out there, either modern or traditional or such.What Hulda has done is that she offers an alternative way, to give some folks, desperate or not, chance to give it a try after their certain treatments fail or some treatment causing severe side effects turning their lives as unbearable to live.Some may disagree with the books yet there are couple of pratical logical things to do, to safeguard their health, like taking well known toxic stuff out of kitchen or better the entire house, what not to consume or inhale to avoid self-poisoning, healthier products to use for babies, so forth.Rather than condemning the whole book.To those who seem wanting to burn this book of Hulda's...I'm quite glad that we're in democratic society, with such kind of freedom we enjoy i.e. freedom of press.We do have rights to make intimate personal choices for ourselves and our health needs... Very interesting overview of current research in the subject
The collection of articles in this book gives a fascinating overview of human musical cognition and how it is modeled computationally. It also addresses the effect of brain lesions or abnormalities on musical competence and abilities, and thus gives the reader a taste of the kind of research that is being done in current research circles in the cognitive neuroscience of music. It is readily apparent after reading the articles that much is known about musical cognition, but there are many questions yet to answer. Because of space constraints, only a few of the articles will be reviewed here.

Excellent source of info on one aspect of bipolar treatment
This book should be read by anyone trying to optimize treatment of bipolar disorder through the use of cognitive-behavioral therapy.In fact it should be read both by patients and by therapists and possibly psychiatrists too.The book is well written, well organized, and fairly easy to understand.It is not intended to be a comprehensive guide to surviving bipolar disorder- if the reader wants a comprehensive guide, see Torrey's "Surviving Manic Depression" and Miklowitz's "Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide".But for just learning about cognitive-behavioral therapy, this book is excellent.Avery Z. excellent resource for the health sciences
I used the book as much as I did my drug and nursing procedure book during nursing school.I wished I had it when I was in respiratory therapy school years ago because it's a fantastic book.It's concise, accurate and organized very well.It also further organizes each heading by causes, signs/symptoms, how diagnosed and treatment, etc.

Professional Guide to Diseases
This is an excellent book, pure and simple. It covers a wide variety of diseases, and explains each one well without going into excess and causing "information overload" (as some other medical reference books tend to do). Its format is clear and easily readable. It offers sound clinical and laboratory findings, making it a great resource material for students (such as myself). What impresses me the most is its coverage of the more rare diseases, something often neglected in other texts. I have found it invaluable in my studies, and highly recommend it.

Professional Guide to Diseases
This is the BEST medical book to have in your home health care library. I have the second addition and have used it countless time to look up ailments for my family and friends. Although it is written for the medical professional, I find it very readable for a layman like myself. When I became very ill with viral encephalitis, this book helped me understand what was happening to me, how to take care of myself, and to show my family what I was going through so they wouldn't worry. ... not as boring as it looks
After The Third Policeman and The Turn of the Screw, I thought this would be a snoozefest, but it was actually very interesting.I'm not sure who left it or why (do I sound paranoid? I don't mean to sound paranoid), but I think the information may prove useful down the road....

Quite extensive workbook about hearth arrhythmias. In each case chapter starts with short theory and than examples of charts for the particular arrhythmias and than you get a chance to practice yourself with number of charts, answers in the back with explanations. Wonderful information
I believe this was a great book, it provided a lot of needed information on stds, the contraction of certain disease, etc. It was almost like a reference guide to me. It made me feel much better after i had gained all the needed knowledge. STD'Sare one of those "quiet diseases", that nobody really talks about...However,you have to get your information from somewhere, right?....So why not get it from a reliable source with a huge layout of information.(even pictures)So, all in all i rate this book a 5, i doubt it could throughly describe std's any better then it did. ...
