Excellent Study Resouce for PCCN Exam too
Even thought the book title said CCRN but I used it for my PCCN exam and it works well.I pass with one shot. They are many questions in the book that related to the exam. I recommend any one who will take PCCN but this book and practice the question of it. If you do not understand the explaination for the question go back to your text book or the reliable internet resource for further study. It is small book but very helpful.

Bad Blood points out that the US Surgeon General at the time was Hugh Smith Cumming.In 1939 he was responsible more than any other person for creating the system we now have in place that controls narcotics and other banned substances which San Jose Mercury News journalist and Pulitizer Prize Winner, Gary Webb, said was controlled by a handful of power elites through the CIA.
African-American Victims Of Government Laboratory Experiments!!!
One of the least known facts of U.S. history is the government sponsored syphilis experiment conducted upon 399 African-American men from 1932 to 1972.Over the course of these five decades, the U.S. Public Health Service exploited African-American sharecroppers in its effort to determine if the long-term affects of syphilis were different for black people than it was for white people. During the trials, the doctors who conducted the experimentations intentionally denied these men treatment; never informed them of syphilis' destructiveness to their health; and ignored the fact that these men were infecting their respective wives and sexual partners with the disease.As the experiments continued, doctors calculatedly deceived the subjects, informing them that they were suffering from what was categorized as: "bad blood".As the disease ravaged the minds and bodies of these unsuspecting men, no effort was made by the physicians of the Public Health Service to either inform them regarding the disease or provide them with treatment in an effort to curtail its devastating effects.

Aids to examination of the peripheral nervous system is a nice compact, quick reference book to primarily peripheral neuropathies and at the end, briefly of radiculopathies.The images of both muscle tests and cutaneous sensory areas are very clear.Text is short and to the point.Very helpful and well worth the low cost!

Buy this book!
I absolutely hate peripheral nerve disorders.That's probably because I'm not good at diagnosing them.But, if I had this book at the start of my training, perhaps things would be different.This book is an absolute gem.It has great illustrations and has complete listings of movements, muscles, nerves, and roots.It has diagrams of the plexuses as well.There is a handy table in the back on most common muscle movements, etc.It's biggest drawback is that it does not fit in a hospital coat's pocket.

Reliable, pamphlet sized, clinical reference
New edition of a handy clinical reference that has been around for 50 years. Early editions had photos in B&W, color in this version adds nothing. For every muscle there is a photo of a clinical evaluation showing position of the limb etc and the instructions ("The patient tries to flex against resistance"). For each muscle there is listed the spinal segments and periferal nerve. Included are standard sensory maps and plexus diagrams. Fits into your instrument bag or white coat pocket. A good summer read.
First, let me explain myself a little so that you may know where I am coming from. I am a pre-med biology major who will be a senior for the fall '06 term. I have never had any A&P class whatsoever because the biology department's requirements...well, that is another story. I bought this book because it is not too detailed to lose sight of the big picture but just detailed enough to explain pretty much all the A&P that will be on the MCAT. Of course, this book has tons of stuff that is NOT tested on the MCAT, but I have the examkracker books and I use this book for the (very) few times examkrackers does a poor job explaining things. It's also always good to read the same thing from various sources because the information is much easier to retain that way. I like the pathology that is intermixed throughout the entire book, and the outline pages at the end of each chapter are nice as well as the "case studies" that you are presented with. All in all, this book would be 5 stars for its high yield, one semester A&P (and some pathology) content, but I had to take off one star for the abysmal section on nutrition and metabolism. Glycolysis, CAC, and ETC are barely mentioned. The one or two figures are childish (the others are really good). I may be biased though because I just got out of biochemistry and metabolism was beaten into my brain. Still, I can recommend this to those who want a cheap, basic A&P book to supplement their MCAT Biology studying. The pathology stuff is just bonus and fun to read as sort of a segway into my senior year and my pathology class.

The Human Body in Health and Disease
The book uses in depth, even microscopic scientific detail to explain human anatomy and human body functions, and does so in an ultra clear manner, regularly repeating in different words what is most important to understand.Repetition has and always will be the best way to learn.I had to wonder how the text might compare to textbooks used on college and university campuses, since I am using the book simply for an online certification, but for now the new knowledge is a head full for me, and probably will be for some time to come.It is very fun to know so much now about all the parts of the brain and the body, and about how all of our bodies function, subjects I had not previously studied in spite of much higher education.

A good intro to anatomy and physiology
This book is designed to be an introduction to A & P and it does that very well.I didn't give the book a perfect 5 star rating for a couple of reasons. First, I have a background in anatomy and found some of their explanations of a few body systems to be confusing even though I already knew the information. This was particularly true of their explanation of the Autonomic Nervous System. In general, most things are explained well and have a lot of really helpful accompanying figures and tables.Read more

This isthe best book for the CPC examination, because it is the professional version of the ICD-9-CM, one accepted for the CPC. I love this book because the books must be published by the AMA, which this is, and you are able to use the professional version for the examination. I just received the September 2006 edition, the "latest and greatest" paperback... Nothing New here, plus Amazon charges the list price$7.95... I am sure you can get it at a mega bookstore for less

a must have
I love, love, love this book!I am only half way through, and all of my questions have already been answered.The rest of the information is just an added bonus to questions that I didn't even know I had yet.I always share my new learnings, and it has helped one of my co-workers to offer her friend advice, who has a newly diagnosed, Type 1 diabetic, son.To be educated on the topic leaves both the diabetic and their support system feeling uplifted.

Best Medical Micro Text Ever-Reads Like a Good Novel!
I teach microbiology to nursing students, so I only use this book as a reference.It's a wonderful book; I take it to bed with me and don't fall asleep (really).The information is comprehensive without being unnecesarily difficult, and the organization and presentation are so intuitive, it seems to answer your next question before you even formulate it.My only gripe is WHERE IS THE NEW EDITION???Even though this book is old, 1998, it's still worth the money, but it doesn't have the new emergent diseases like TSE and SARS.

JNC VII
Whether a clinician or just someone who wants to learn more about the latest treatments for high blood pressure, if you buy a book about hypertension, make sure it incorporates that latest guidelines -- JNC VII (2003). Diagnosis and treatment guidelines changed substantially. I have a copy of this book and like it quite a bit but as far as I know, it has not been updated to include JNC VII recommendations.

A critical analysis of statin drug trials
This book by Uffe Ravnskov does for cholesterol what The Skeptical Environmentalist did for environmentalism. Sometimes we need to be prodded out of our complacency and this book does an admirable job. The other nice thing about this book is that it does not peddle faddish diets, vitamins or herbs, its just a good critical analysis of the existing data. It is also very well written, which makes for a very easy read.

The Thirteen Sins of Medical Statistics
The first sin is misdirection.Many studies indicated there were inverse relationships between mortality and cholesterol, especially at advanced age, and with women.The researchers ignored this, and stated unequivocally the data showed a direct proportional relationship between cholesterol and mortality.
A Grain of Salt
This book is a review of research concerning heart disease, cholesterol, and diet.The author makes little attempt to be objective, and pushes continually for his opinion that research to date has not been able to prove conclusively that a diet high in cholesterol leads to heart disease.In the beginning of the book, he carefully lays out the logic for the reader, separating the main hypotheses concerning cholesterol so that he can then bring each into question in turn.For Ravnskov, the main hypotheses are: "a high-fat diet leads to high cholesterol levels in the blood" and "high cholesterol levels in the blood lead to arteriosclerosis and heart attacks."He also examines related hypotheses of perhaps lesser importance, such as "lowering your cholesterol level with lengthen your life" or "polyunsaturated oils are good for you".Each chapter begins with a description of what Ravnskov terms a "myth" concerning cholesterol or heart disease, which Ravnskov then counters with a critical analysis of the research purported to prove the claim contained in the "myth".

Magnesium and CoQ10 can help
My wife suffered from mitral valve prolapse for several years until we discovered the many healing benefits of appropriate nutrient supplementation. Now that we take chelated magnesium and coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) daily for heart health, her MVP symptoms have disappeared. Anyone wishing verification of the role of magnesium in mitigating the symptoms of mitral valve prolapse can find it discussed in Dr. Carolyn Dean's excellent book The Miracle of Magnesium. Another excellent book which also discusses the role of supplemental magnesium in relieving MVP is The Magnesium Factor by Dr. Mildred Seelig. Both of these books are available from Amazon at quite reasonable prices.
Great book!!
This book has every detail of information you will ever need to understand MVPS.I have answered so many of my own questions by reading this book.I highly recommend to anyone who has been diagnosed w/ MVP/MVPS....you will learn so much about your symptoms and you will understand why your symptoms relate to MVP.

Bugs, germs and parasites
Long before Jared Diamond captured headlines and dominated bestseller lists with 'Gun, Germs and Steel," the distinguished University of Chicago historian William McNeill published "Plagues and Peoples" that carried a similar message, albeit heavily focused on the "germs" part of the equation.
wordy, interesting
William Mcneill presents a different and mind-expanding take on disease: microbes, humans, and governments all function similarly to facilitate their optimal survival and expansion.When the opportunistic structure gets too greedy, it may overwhelm the host.With time and familiarity, host and parasite usually come to an uneasy alliance, which allows the survival of each.If you read "Plagues and Peoples" with this thesis in mind, it is a very interesting book.If you lose sight of the thesis, it is too easy to get bogged down in the author's extremely baroque writing style.A few reviewers concluded that the book was hard for them to comprehend because they were high school aged readers.As an older adult, compulsive reader, with a lot of patience, I have to say I experienced the same problem with this book.I checked the biographical material on the author to see if English was his second language.I felt the book read as if translated.I found myself mentally simplifying almost every sentence, not because of the complexity of the idea being conveyed, but because of unnecessary verbage."Plagues and Peoples" does contain loads information on the history of mankind and disease, within the framework of an interesting thesis.I just feel that simpler wording would have helped the book read smoother. Another very fascinating history of man's interaction with microbes which is much more reader friendly is "Men and Microbes".

Epidemic is historic
I bought this book from Amazon, and I read it here, in Brazil.This book is really good, about this subject.In fact, epidemic killed far more peoples than all wars and dictators together.Lenin or Hitler were small killers than smallpox.In fact, smallpox exterminated, more than 70% of indian population of Mexico in XVI Century.Illness decided wars, religions, poltics and economics for all the history.
