A family guide
Having recently had a loved one who has suffered a devastating stroke, this book was so helpful in every aspect of what to expect on this very long journey to recovery.It was easy to read and to understand and I would highly recommend it to any family or caregiver who is going through this process with a loved one.

Very interesting overview of current research in the subject
The collection of articles in this book gives a fascinating overview of human musical cognition and how it is modeled computationally. It also addresses the effect of brain lesions or abnormalities on musical competence and abilities, and thus gives the reader a taste of the kind of research that is being done in current research circles in the cognitive neuroscience of music. It is readily apparent after reading the articles that much is known about musical cognition, but there are many questions yet to answer. Because of space constraints, only a few of the articles will be reviewed here.

Good intro to the depth and details of neurosci
I've hung on to this book after taking the course (a neurosci course for advanced undergrads and a few grad students).It's attractive because itgoes into depth without becoming murky for a beginner.Once you've mastered introductory neurosci topics and want to roll up your sleeves forthe details, this is a great book to pick up.Read more

The best advanced text on the market
This textbook is a very detailed and very up-to-date exposition of Neuroscience, and in my view, for the more advanced student it is one of the best books out there. What it is NOT is a simple, concise introduction for people who are studying the nervous system for the first time. If you are taking an entry-level Neuroscience course you are likely to be overwhelmed by the amount of detail, and, like some of the other reviewers who gave this book a bad rap, might blame the book for the fact that you can only take in so much detail in a first sitting, and fail to see the forest for all the trees. So if you are new to Neuroscience, read something like Bear et al "Neuroscience - Exploring the Brain" first, and only once you have absorbed that, turn to this beautifully detailed book for a much closer look at the subject. The chapters on Vision by Clay Reid and the Hearing chapters by Brown in this book are quite simply and without a doubt among the best textbook chapters on these topics anywhere, (and much better than anything you will find in Kandel!)

Most up-to-date text on the market
I'm a clinical academic neurologist with an MS in neuroscience some 25 years ago, and I decided to read through this text as a means of bringing myself up-to-date in the field.This textbook accomplished that task admirably.I will agree with some critics that parts of it were far too detailed, especially the sections on molecular neurobiology, where too often things got bogged down with discussions of a protein's biophysical properties, for example. Another caveat is that there are some production defects--the pages around 200 are not in the right order, and I found a few diagrams that were mislabelled. But the illustrations are really gorgeous.I've made extensive use of the CD, which contains all the figures and their legends, for Power Point presentations to the neurology residents I teach. I would suggest that future editions of the CD incorporate some videos and animated diagrams that could better illustrate some concepts, e.g., details of signal transduction, which is REALLY complex and was hard to follow in the text.But Kandels text is now several years older and as the pace of neuroscience is so incredibly rapid, this text contains more of the latest info.

Too detailed
This text is not appropiate for any for introductory class to neuroscience at any level (whether grad or undergrad). The depth and detail leaves the reader confused at best. Perhaps it is suitable for an advanced gradute seeking to remedy any detail oriented holes. For all others, it is a precursor to a headache.Read more

Excellent Resource and Beautifully Written
I was deeply involved in the creation of this edition, and I can say from experience that the authors have crafted a masterpiece.So much work, diligence, research, and love went into this revision.It is a great resource for family members of someone with Alzheimer's and related disorders, physician's and other practitioners, and even people who have been recently diagnosed.It can be used to educate someone who knows little about dementia or offer a new perspective to the experienced clinician.I highly recommend this book!

How to Conquer the World with One Hand...And an Attitude
Best "help" book I've read since my 33 year old son had a stroke.Couldn't put the book down and was amazed at how many similar things that we had gone through--AWESOME read for any young person who had a stroke or their caregivers.

It gave me hope!
My father is much older than Paul when he suffered his stroke in December of 2000.My father's stroke was very severe and has left him totally paralyzed on his right side and unable to speak or effectively communicate in any manner, which is the same side and conditions that Paul suffered.This book gave me hope that some day my 78-yr. old father may be able to communicate on some level.All speech therapy has been stopped for my father, but after reading this book and seeing what 8 years of therapy has done for Paul, my family is looking into our options once again.I can think of nearly nothing worse than being able to understand most of what is being said around you and not being able to communicate back.People with aphasia are essentially trapped within their own body.Thanks, Paul for having the courage to move forward with your life and to tell your story.It truly gave me hope!!

What an attitude!He must be from Philly.
I admit, I am also from Philly, and nobody messes with us. Paul wouldn't accept any diagnosis other than a life that was interesting and fulfilling.It's remarkable how he struggled to get back his body. It's a funny uplifting book that should give inspiration to other head trauma victims. (Anda nice reminder to the rest of us.)Paul and Stephanie have written about regaining a lifestyle they enjoyed in spite of new disablities. I found it fascinating that Paul came back with more of a sense of humor and a more outgoing personality. Imagine a man with aphasia starting conversations with his fellow commuters! Very Concise
With almost 700 pages and an ominously black cover, the exterior of this book places it with so many other neuroscience texts: long, dull and confusing.But read on - there may be more to this book than meets the visual cortex... Concise Text of Neuroscience aims to provide the medical student with a relevant knowledge of the main topics in neuroscience.It achieves this in fifteen chapters, each one integrating the necessary neuroanatomy and neurophysiology with a related section on clinical neurology.The neuroanatomy is described with the aid of illustrations which, while only in one colour, are beautifully clear.Clinical sections include case histories which allow the reader to apply the acquired knowledge to a realistic situation."Further application" questions and excellent summaries add to the quality of this book as a learning resource.Adding further to this are the appendices, covering neuroembryology, neurological examination, neurological imaging, and a simple-but-detailed MRI atlas. To me, however, the most important characteristic of any book attempting to cover such a complex subject is clarity of the writing style.In this area Concise Text excels.It explains difficult concepts in an understandable fashion, and amazingly retains its conciseness - the conciseness that allows the integration of neuroanatomy, neurophysiology and clinical neurology into one textbook.
