A true life horror story
A really compelling read! I could not put this book down. Before I read 'The Hot Zone' I had never really taken much interest in virology. Richard Preston writes his account very effectively in the style of a novel, but the fact that the horrors of Marburg and Ebola that he describes are actually true, gave me many sleepless nights. A frightening aspect of these filoviruses is that their source has still not been found. If only all non-fictional books were as readable as this!
Truly terrifying from the start to the end
I am someone who loves classics... so I never read this kind. But I happened to read it on my trip to east coast. I finished within 2 days. At first, I was scared, then i accept the truth... it became better. And it's so good from the start to end... So realistic, u can touch the grip of it... feel like it's happening around the corner.
Sub-par
I've been wanting to read this novel for several years now.Taking Virology during my undergraduate career only peaked my interest in reading about Ebola in a novel-style context.There's not much known about the Ebola virus, even to this day, and I was intrigued to see how Preston would incorporate this knowledge (or lackthereof) into his book.While the subject matter is extremely interesting and engaging, I will have to agree that his writing style is sub-par.I found myself skimming through whole paragraphs because of his mundane and repetitive diction and syntax.If it had been written by someone else, I think I could have immensely enjoyed this book (I'm a major science nerd, and I love reading science books).The only thing that kept me going to the finish was the fact that the entire novel was riding on the subject matter Ebola itself.The virus was what kept the novel going (I actually enjoyed all the factual paragraphs about Ebola...reminded me of the course I took in college! Haha, that, and I like seeing how factually correct Preston was).Overall, it seems like most of his facts are correct (there are a few things that I would contest, but that's besides the point), but honestly, the book was a bore...which is a shame, because it's written on such a fascinating subject.

The book you need
As an infectious disease fellow, I recommend that anyone who want be an ID man should have such a book. Most infectious problems and diseases have been detailed in this book, although there are far going of emerging diseases and new antibiotics. A good clinical microbiology text
The two volume set is indeed a comprehensive reference work, but individual chapter can be read by themselves. I use this book on almost a daily basis, the only negative against it is that such a large book by its size can only be updated at intervals of a number of years so a folder in which to put your acculated journal articles next to it, until the next edition is advised as, infectious diseases is not a static field. Since there is a CD rom available now that may well be worth checking out. In closing for anybody involved in anything from clinical microbiology to a infectious disease specialist this book is a must.

A must-have!
This little guide may seem confusing at first glance, but it is quite helpful once you figure out how to use it!You'll still need a prescribing reference for dosages, etc. but this gives you a place to start.

A must on the wards
Always a great help for any medical student or resident, especially in primary care. If you're going to be culturing something, you need to know what to treat empirically with until the C&S comes back, and that's where Sanford's is a great help. It's not quite an ID consult, but it works until they show up.

Great daily reference--in clinic and hospital
Great quick pocket reference, use it daily for both out-pt and in-pt infectious disease treatment.Details first line therapy (and includes pediatric doses), and gives concise clinical criteria for back-up choices (eg. treatment failures, associated comorbidities, drug allergic patients).

Good research, disjointed storytelling
This book covers a lot of ground and Barry has done some great research.What Barry does not do is maintain a consistently engaging narrative. As others have noted, the book could have used some judicious editing.It probably could have lost 100 pages in my view.

Excellent Pathophysiology book
This is an excellent pathophysiology book available in the market. I am right now preparing for my step 2 but I wish I would have used this book for my step 1. I have a decent score on my step 1 and I have taken the exam recently and I think if somebody masters this book they can rock the exam. This book gives excellent information regarding many diseases. I am trying to study this book right now with CMDT, which is also by the same author. Because CMDT is a very concise text book of IM it doesn't explain all the pathophysiology for a disease but this book has all the answers about the pathophysiology of a disease. And I think its a worth buying book for all the medical students, if you study this book little by little during preclinical years it will help you very much understand the IM in the clinical years. I was surprize to find some infornation which I was craving for since few years of my med school. You will even find pathophysilogy of very rare syndromes, as for example I was amazed when I read about X linked Hypophosphatemic rickets. If you are like me who wants to have explanation behind everything, get this book today, you wan't be disappointed.

I found the book vague and unclear.It was recommended as a "reference" book for a graduate level pathophysiology course and it was the first book I returned.There are several other books on pathophysiology that are on the market for about the same price or a bit more that are MUCH more thorough and useful for undergraduate, graduate or medical student reference.I would NOT recommend this book for anyone looking at any type of indepth medical information. ... Review from a polio survivor
As a polio survivor who was caught up in the epidemic of 1952, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who had polio or was involved in the search for a solution.My mother was one of the regional directors for the Mother's March in the 1950's and is now reading the book.It is very well written and pulls no punches highlighting both positive aspects of this decades long effort and the petty politics and personalities that accompanied it.

Polio
I am a survivor of the polio epidemic of the mid forties.This is an excellent account of those days and of the people who ultimately conquered this disease and saved the lives of thousands from its ravages.

Fascinating and informative
Mr. Oshinsky's book is a well written, well researched history of the United States' struggle with poliomyelitis and the race to a vaccine. This book is a page turner, right up there with the most entertaining fiction. Oshinsky's combination of historical accounts and narration style make this book engaging for any lay person. He objectively tells us about Salk and Sabin, the two scientists whose killed- and live-virus vaccines, respectively, changed the natural course of polio and brought it close to eradication. Oshinsky also details the crucial work of many other researchers without whom the polio vaccines would never have existed, and also the important work of the National Foundation that worked tirelessly, raising money and supporting researchers; this organization is now the March of Dimes. I read this book on vacation in Puerto Rico, and I could barely put it down. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in history of vaccines, polio, or just medical innovation. ... At 1773 pages, the "Manual of Clinical Microbiology" is a good (medium size) reference for a clinical or diagnostic microbiologist. It offers detailed information on both practical and theoretical aspects of the subject. Its authority is unquestionable. Pathologists, doctors, pharmacists, nurses, and anybody whose business concerns infectious diseases will find the book useful. The classical Microbiology laboratrory text
This book is comprehensive, well put together and thorough in all of its aspects. It is an invaluable text in the microbiology department. I and my workplace have a copy, and it is the most often refered text in our laboratory only Bergeys and Mandell come close. All aspects including bacteriology, virology, parasitology, mycology, laboratory metheds etc etc are covered it is a one stop clinical microbiology text. Fields Virology
The book pictured on this site is the Fourth Edition of Fields Virology.However, the "Book Description" in the "Editiorial Reviews" section on this site is for the Third Edition of Fields Virology.I hesitate to purchase the book because I am unsure which edition you will be shipping.Before I place my order, I want assurance that I will be receiving the Fourth Edition.

Best out there for MAMMALIAN virology
My take on this two-volume set is that if you are going to put out as much money as this set costs, you should get a lot for it.This two- volume set is simply the best I have found for MAMMALIAN virology, with a close second being 'Fundamental Virology'.I stress the mammalian virology, as it omits a good bit (if not all) of the plant- associated virii.The basics of all virus structure are in there, regarding plant virii, but beyond that, there is information lacking.Despite this, when purchased as a graduate-level or upper-undergraduate level text or reference guide, there simply is no other text of this scale.There is a lot more text than graphics, but this does not (in my opinion) deter from the value of the text.If I could, I'd give a 4.5 star of 5, only for the lack of plant virii information and my personal desire for more graphics.i will say that the CD-Rom has more than enough graphics to make up for the book's seeming lack of graphics.As a 'financially- burdened' Pathology trainee and Virologist by employment, I will say that this is worth the price and effort to read.Note that it is written to the biologist who has some knowledge, albeit foundational knowledge, of biology.

A FINE VIROLOGY YARDSTICK
There is hardly any significant fact about viruses that missed-out in this edition of "Fields Virology". Page after page, this sound all-inclusive reference doles out authoritative information on both viruses and viral syndromes. From taxonomy to etiology, metamorphosis to replication; the analyses of this text is grand. The same applies to its attached CD-ROM. Its practical outlook was intended to benefit both microbiologists and pathologists. Bernard Fields and his colleagues made their mark with this book. It is a great effort.Read more

Pictures are pretty bad
I am a medical student and I want to dis-recommend this book, especially to medical students.What makes a biology textbook good in my opinion is above all the quality of the pictures.And since the pictures in this book are poorly designed and poorly laid out, I can only dis-recommend it.

A book that is continuously updated
An amazing book.I came to know it by being a student in the class that the authors teach at UC Irvine--AIDS Fundamentals (by far the most informative and interesting class I have ever taken). I read the second edition, originally--the great thing about this book is that it is consistantly updated textbook--if you read each edition as it appears, you keep up with the developments. This is a book to be read over and over.

This book is awful.The name should be called should be called "Sugar Coating the Bitter Pill of Herpes" or "Herpes; Your Sex Life Does Not Have to Change at All"If you have herpes one should not have unprotected sex outside of marriage.This book does not endorse this practice.I realy don't understand how the so called M.D.'s that wrote this book can live with the fact that every other page of this book does not say "If you have herpes do not have unprotected sex!!!!". The woman who gave me herpes said there were risks but I did not have to wear a condom.This book is filled with similar propoganda. Very useful
If you have lot of time to read, yes, this book is a MUST. But if you have 40 exams plus practices plus meetings plus, plus, plus.....Kuby is a good option. Anyway, never trust only in a single book.

Harrowing but beautiful
Tayman's account of the leper colony on Molokai and its history is fascinating and brilliantly written.He clearly shows us the various characters involved over a century of "medical segregation" as he calls it. All in all many scholars have come to the conclusion that the isolation of the lepers prevented the further progress of the disease in Hawaii.The poor planning by the Board of Health made the victim's suffering more acute in the beginning of their isolation and the effects of this have lived on in the hearts of the Hawaiian people.

Great miniseries material
I would have never believed I would more than skim this book when I began it;what a surprise!It was like the most incredible miniseries imaginable. Unbelievable true stories of heroism and cruelty and larger than life characters.The author has a way of making you want to keep turning pages.Best book I've read in a long time.
