Every diabetic should own a copy
Good recipes that anyone will eat. Diabetics want tasty food like the rest of us. This is food that all of us will enjoy. I highly recommend this for anyone who has a diabetic family member.

Betty Crocker's Diabetes Cookbook: Everyday Meals, Easy as 1-2-3
Excellent choice, very informative for the somewhat "diabetes illerate". I will be using it often for my recently diagnosed husband's mealplanning and plan to send a copy to my son (who was also recently diagnosed with Type2 diabetes.

I really like the recipes from this book they are simple enought for every day.They are also excellent for entertaining.I like meals that a versatile.This is one of those books.I also like the fact that they are tasty.Some books I have gotten are like something from the 70 health food and my family often dosen't like some of them.this book is great. ... An Absolute Breakthrough
At the risk of sounding overly dramatic, I will simply say that as a type I diabetic the advice in this book has improved my condition immeasurably. After 8 months of following its low carbohydrate guidelines my A1C has dropped from 8.7 to an all-time low of 6.4 and my daily insulin dosage has decreased by almost 40% (both long-acting and fast-acting). I finally feel a measure of control over the disease and am slowly getting some respite from the constant frustration that unpredictable fluctuations in blood glucose measurements inevitably induce. I must add that I have not even been following the program very rigorously and have chosen to pass on some of its more drastic aspects (to me). I do admit that losing most of my carb-heavy comfort foods was difficult at first (and occasionally still is) but the payoff is really so staggering that I believe every diabetic should be exposed to this information as part of their healthcare education and shouldn't have to buy a book in order to obtain it.
Yes and No; Better for Type 2s
Caveat Emptor. Removing all carbs from your diet to control blood sugar is like never leaving the house if you suffer from allergies. Following Dr. Bernstein's advice religiously without being in constant consultation with your personal MD is potentially very dangerous. Restricting ALL carbs the way he advises may help type 2 people who are overweight. Not for Type 1s who need carbs as much as we need insulin shots. I tried this type of diet and looked like a skeleton within a month. In a way us Type 1s have it easier, just more track marks, but removing all carbs and substituting them for these mysterious G/G crackers he praises can and will make you lose weight, give you more lows and create more problems. It may work for some, is probably very helpful for overweight type 2s, and a lot of the advice he does give is outstanding but please don't take it as the final word.

The Best Book on Diabetes That I have Ever Read
If you have diabetes, if you live with a diabetic, read this book.It's wonderfully clear in its explanations and arguments.Supplement it perhaps with the general writings of Dr. Andrew Weil on various foods, vitamins,and food preparation,but take a look at what Dr. Bernstein is saying about protein and carbs.This is a field where there is much disagreement, but I find this book to be convincing and extremely helpful.The best book on diabetes I've ever read. ... If you're aging prematurely, getting fatter, feeling sluggish, and watching your blood pressure and cholesterol sneak upwards, you may have "Syndrome X," claim the authors, who say that up to 60 million North Americans have it. "Syndrome X is primarily a nutritional disease caused by eating the wrong foods," they write. The mysterious-sounding "Syndrome X" refers to a group of health problems including insulin resistance ("the inability to properly deal with dietary carbohydrates such as sugars"), plus at least one additional problem, such as abnormal blood fats (elevated cholesterol or triglycerides), overweight, and/or high blood pressure. Insulin resistance is "a diet-caused hormonal logjam that interferes with your body's ability to efficiently burn the food you eat." According to the authors, you probably have this problem, and if you do, eating processed carbohydrates are the root of it. Pastries, pastas, breakfast cereals, soft drinks--these refined carbos are the enemy. The book warns you that you probably suffer from insulin resistance (please get a blood test instead of relying on the admittedly unscientific questionnaire in the book, which makes everyone suspect who eats cereal or drinks fruit juice). Then the authors jump on the high-protein, low carb bandwagon. You can eat three eggs for breakfast, roast duck for lunch, and salmon for dinner, and snack on chicken slices.Read more

very useful book!
5 stars on all the info re: the disease as it explains in plain language what havoc in your body gets started with any of the inter-related metabolic functions getting tipped off balance.
Interesting and informative
This is an informative, non-preachy, explanation that is both correct and yet written in an interesting manner.It also does not try to sell anything but the facts.Very interesting.

I just received the September 2006 edition, the "latest and greatest" paperback... Nothing New here, plus Amazon charges the list price$7.95... I am sure you can get it at a mega bookstore for less

a must have
I love, love, love this book!I am only half way through, and all of my questions have already been answered.The rest of the information is just an added bonus to questions that I didn't even know I had yet.I always share my new learnings, and it has helped one of my co-workers to offer her friend advice, who has a newly diagnosed, Type 1 diabetic, son.To be educated on the topic leaves both the diabetic and their support system feeling uplifted.

Sheeplike followers of the drug-company bought ADA
There's an old vaudeville joke: "Patient: Doctor, doctor!It hurts whenever I do THIS. Doctor: Well, don't DO THAT!" Nothing new
There is nothing special in this book for Diabetes. It just suggests moderation dietary intake following of famous soon to be changed food pyramid with emphasis on eating heavy starch. Where soon after my brother eats potato his blood sugar level goes through the sky. There are nice suggested meal plans but and data about foods. I was expecting more stringer diet I can take it but I am concerned like "eat fat loose fat diet ".

Overdose on carbohydrates.....
Oh what is a person to do. One the one, hand we are offered diets high in protein that cause weight loss but taken to an extreme (devoid of carbohydrates) can injure the body. On the other hand, we haveDIABETES MEAL PLANNING MADE EASY by Hope S. Warshaw that suggests we overdose on carbohydrates.In the end, each of us must decide individually which plan works best. Diabetics carbohydrate and fat gram guide
Lots of good information.Cumbersome and hard to read due to the fact that it is landscaped and you have to turn the book to the side to read it.

Good information about most conventional food. Excellent source for information
My daughter got diabetes at 8 months and I was clueless.She is 2 now and is wanting to eat more like everyone else.This book arms me with information to make good decisions for her.She is so small that just a few undosed carbs can really move her blood glucose high.It is a little frustrating at first until you get a feel for what foods are found where.Not all foods are in here, but what book can hope to list everything.If you are going to just buy one book or if this is your first carb book, this is the one to get. ... Diabetes:the indispensible manual
No practitioner of Chinese Medicine, particularly of Chinese Herbal Medicine, can afford to be without this book.It is methodically laid out with an extensive introduction to Diabetes from the perspectives of both Chinese Medicine and Industrial Medicine (a.k.a."Western Medicine" for no discernibly rational reason).

What a nice surprise
I wasn't sure what I was getting when I ordered this book.My initial thoughts were that this might be helful in managing our heart failure patients. After all chronic disease is chronic disease. I got so much more then I bargained for. "The Art of Empowerment: Stories and Strategies for the Daibetes Educators" is more then a book with the hows and the whys; it is a journey. One that encompases self-reflection and the willingness to take a good hard look at your existing belief system.The authors artfully walk you through how they developed their philosophy of empowerment. That empowerment for both the educator and patient come from the concepts of freedom and responsibility. "Because we are free to make choices, we are responsible for the consequences of out choices". The book is rich with stories from nurses, educators, psychologists and physicians who have taken the steps through self-reflection to create a vision. What is our purpose as diabetes educators? Each charpter is design to provide you with tools and exercises that will help you with the process of self-reflection. Empowerment is a vision or a philosophy of giving care, the vision comes before the method and the vison comes through self-reflection. Coincidently, while reading this book, I was doing some work with one of the NPs at our hospital who manages the diabetes clinic. It was amazing to me to actually see the many opportunites to use this strategy as we saw patients over the past two weeks. My NP has asked if she could borrow my book when I am done.
