Great for anyone considering to become a doctor
This book was great, but most of it was common sense knowlege. I had wished it had gone into more detail about medical shool etc...The ending of the book sort of just dropped off, I kind of expected more. But it was a real eye opener, and it showsthat as long as you put your mind to something you can be anything you want to. A great self motivator!

Good only if your just starting your research
I found this book pretty superficial. It includes a lot of common sense ancedotes that, if you've done much research at all, will sound very repetitive. This is a great book

got the job done
I used this book as a primary resource for my 3rd year shelf exam (with Blueprints as a fall-back), and I got a 4.0. I saw a number of questions and scenarios on the test that I recogized from this text.

Much harder than the actual test
I just finished the shelf exam having studied this book exhaustively, and I honestly think there's simply too much detail.Endless questions on the details of Riley-Day syndrome, McCune-Albright syndrome, and parasites found only in Africa.The test was certainly not easy, but the bulk of it dealt with the more common diseases like Henoch-Schonlein Purpura and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.I'd go with blueprints first and foremost, maybe supplement with a question book like this one and don't get too caught up in the details of obscure diseases. I guess OK
The book I would say is good if you are willing go insanely above and beyond the normal realms of getting a job...most of the info. is pretty easy to figure out on your own, but if structure is needed this can be a good guideline.Over all it did not do much for me, but it might work wonders for others.

Deficient in important information
On the positive side, the book is neat and is written with humor. Unfortunately the negatives outweigh the positives. When reading this book, I found that most of the information covers resume writing and how to make contact with pharmaceutical sales reps. I think some of her advice about making contact could prevent you from ever getting a job in pharmaceutical sales because it is so unprofessional. The "how to actually get the job part," the interview, was seriously deficient in information. There were few questions and few answers, and next to nothing about how to prepare for the interview. This one simply does not deliver on the description of the book given.

poor compared to blueprints
I bought this book as well as Blueprints and Case Files because they were all highly rated.Generally I found Blueprints to be far better than First Aid.It is better in preparing you for the shelf and for pimping on the rounds.I found First Aid to be poorly organized and not nearly detailed enough for the shelf.The book is organized into an outline format with lots and lots of lists and bullets with little explanation and few useful mnemonics to actually help you retain the data.There were also lots of "pearls" on the margins that were more distracting than useful.Finally the book suffers from not having a table of common acronyms which made it extremely difficult to read/understand in the first week or two.Though I can imagine this book being a good review once you've already gone through the material (that's what I ended up using it for), in my opinion it is wholly inadequate as your only reading source.Blueprints and Case Files, along with a question book, are what you really need to do well on the shelf.

Great Shelf Study Tool!
This book is a "must have" to do well on the psychiatry shelf exam. It highlights all of the important points without being overwhelming. This is a great buy!

Solid content for psych clerkship
This was the best resource I found made for a third year med student.I felt confident answering my attending's questions, and I got an 86 on the NBME shelf (after bombing the surgery exam) by constantly studying this text.Blueprints was too skimpy, while NMS was too dense and seemed to regurgitate DSM guidelines.The book, typical of the First Aid series, gives good overviews of common diseases while hitting those testable pearls of wisdom that are rarely seen on the wards but often on exams (like the priapisms associated with trazodone).It was weak, however, on general medical conditions (GMCs) which could cause psychiatric-like illnesses.The NBME shelf is about 80% psychiatry with several other questions covering neurological diseases, nonpsychatric meds, etc.I would also recommend supplementing this text with some reading on GMCs; NMS actually has a chapter devoted to GMCs which is well made.I would also do practice questions (Blueprints Q&A was better than Pretest or A&L in simulating difficulty and format) just to cement the knowledge.For your white coat, the Current Clinical Guidelines is good for writing notes, DSM guidelines, and treatment protocols.First Aid, however, is the best foundation.You can read it and have a life.

Thinking about a career in dialysis?

Book description incorrect
The book description and some of the reviews do not refer to this text.The book primarily reviews development of theory and then presents an overview of various nursing grand and middle range theories, followed by theories from biological, behavioral, education, management, and sociology that are useful and applicable to nursing.

Index is poor, poor, poor.
Nice text; well-written, but the ridiculous index makes this somewhat of a joke. Whoever wrote the index (looks author-generated?) doesn't know the purpose/function of an index.

Great Book for MS1s w/o Biochem Background
I got this book for a medical biochemistry course I took prior to entering medical school to fulfill my undergraduate degree requirements. The book then was amazing. It's explanations were easy to understand, the figures weren't confusing, and the clinical correlations helped out tremendously. When I did enter medical school, I cracked open the book again to see if it would help with the level we were at there. It did! It seems to have a good balance in teaching the concept and integrating the deep minutia. I absolutely love this book. Not a good reference book
This book was "required" reading at my med school, and NO ONE found it helpful.It had a very general overview of concepts, but was not good for a reference book or for studying for the shelf exam.As a resident, I wouldn't waste my time with it either.

The first third of the book has information for someone who is about to enter a residency.The last two thirds has chapters for someone that is about to enter their third year.I have yet to understand that reason why they included this seemingly different information in one book.It should be split into two.

A terrific review for the ABSITE
I read this book and my in-training exam score went up by over sixty points. It's not exactly a quick read at over 500 pages, but it's very readable and it contains all the information covered in the ABSITE exam.I highly recommend it as a review book for surgery residents looking to improve their scores.

Must have for board prep
This is the only book I found that attempts to provide answers to an actual ABA exam -- good for practice testing.The authors seem to do their best to tackle some of the controversial questions.

Comprehensive review
I found this book to be a very good review for the med tech exam.There were even a few topics that weren't covered in class.The key to making this book work is to start early and do a set number of questions per day.I liked the fact that they had explainations for each answer, because then you could figure out why you got a question wrong.I passed the MT(ASCP) exam with a high score, and I feel that this book definately contributed to my success.

Awesome streamlined and humorous review!
I used this along with Nelson's to prep for recert exam in 2004.It really helped and I learned quite a bit that was asked.It was worth every penny and made the review enjoyable and almost fun!Definitely would but it again.And now in 2006 there is a new, 3rd edition out!Good luck!

The only review book I used
Beeing the lazy bum I am, I waffled till about 8 weeks prior to the boards then scrambled to find a suitable review reference. I wasted 2 weeks and a couple of hundred dollars on two different and equally useless board review books and was starting to panic. Then lo and behold I got a mailing about this book (someone up there must be looking out for me) and it sounded interesting. I read the testimonials online and figured that at this stage I had nothing to lose, so I ordered it along with the crossword and mock board companion books. No it's not cheap, but definitely cheaper than paying the board fee again...
My board review savior!
6 weeks was all I spent studying for these boards.During those weeks I probably read through this book once, with repeated looking up when I came accross some questions.This was basically my main text.Although by no means thorough, it was extremely high yield.And if you think about it.. I'd rather have 75% of the information for the boards down pat rather than knowing very little about 99% of the topics.What also helped were the two question books also published by this company.It helped to solidify the information in the main text.Along with 4 years worth of PREP questions, that was basically all of my studying material.And I passed, with room to spare.Now mind you, I wouldn't recommend anybody studying in the time frame I did for this exam, but I do recommend the use of this book as a supplement to your studying.

Spectacular book for Part IV Boards
This is a great book for the Part IV chiropractic boards.The questions helped me to prepare for the type of questions on this exam.The questions in this study guide were of the type encountered on the boards.I would also highly recommend getting volume 1 because the x-ray portion is a big percentage on this exam.This book helped me to get ready for what would be asked in the patient history rooms and the adjustment rooms.Also, it showed me which orthopedic tests were heavily tested along with neuro packages.This is a must book, many of my chiropractic friends have used this book and also found it very helpful!I wouldn't go into the part 4 board without reviewing this book first. ... These books are helpful and a good way to study for boards. Many people do not know how to approach board review - with these books you can set yourself a goal of 50 or 100 questions per day. A MUST HAVE for med students
I found renal physiology to be difficult to grasp until I read this book. This book is excellent because the clinical cases and examples are easy to follow. You NEED this book for your renal exam and for the boards. I never understood all of the hypertonic hyponatremia, etc. stuff until I read this book. This book is complete yet easy to read. You won't regret this purchase!

New edition
This is a new edition.Disregard the other reviews about the older, outdated edition.

An excellent book.
I was one of the few people in my medical school class that liked this book.I used it as a supplement to my class notes and pharmcards to study for pharmacology. I used it in addition to FirstAid to study for the boards.I found it to be excellent.I like the outline format. I found that it hit upon the pertain side effects and interactions, and I liked the organization.Mechanism of action descriptions were adequate for nearly all questions I was asked. Most in my class used the Lippicontt Illustrated Reviews Pharmacology book. But, they weren't #1 in their class for both Pharm I and Pharm II in medical school. I was.It is a good book.It is a little old now, and is certainly over-due for a new edition. I hope they come out with one.This book presents the facts concisely without a lot of fluff.Give it a shot. And, its cheaper.

This is a way outdated issue. I am surprised that thery haven't renewed it. It is from 1998, so the data in there are probably from 1996 or 1997. Some things are simply wrong today (such as the use as Phenytoin as major anti-arrhythmic drug). Try to get a current review, not one that is almost 7 years old. Additionally it is a hard read. ...
