Teaching Strategies For Nurse Educators, August 19, 2003
As a future nursing educator I found this book to be indispensable.Over the past fifteen years of my nursing career, I have been in virtually every nursing educational setting. For this reason I have collected numerous books and nursing resources on the subjects of cognitive processes, learning and teaching techniques. This book by far pulls all the information together, and it will become the most utilized of my collection. The information is laid out in a logical format that starts with the basic concepts, theories, objectives and goals of learning. She then moves on to explain how to prepare and conduct classes. She concludes with the testing and evaluation process. DeYoung takes you gradually through everything you need to know to formulate and conduct a classroom setting that is both stimulating and achieves the goal of educating nurses to become critical thinking, problem-solvers. Her work employs the latest research on learning/education and at the end of every chapter she reinforces learning through case studies, critical thinking exercises and ideas for future research. Any nursing educator within the academic setting or within the clinical area would benefit from this text.She has made the material easy to understand for the beginning educator and advanced enough for the expert. I wish I had had this resource at the start of my career.I absolutely recommend this book.

Good Parts and Not So Good Parts
Wow, I could've used this one year ago for my first nurse clinical class! This book starts off very promising. It is going to help you grab that elusive thing all teachers want, a class that doesn't put your students in a COMA. The part on learning theory is well explained with examples that pertain to us nurses. There are some basics on the nuts and bolts of instructing a class, again geared towards nursing. Part 2 is where I realize I'm not going to be teacher of the year with this book alone. After switching to patient teaching goals for awhile then we dive into multicultural concepts. I foud the chapter on multiculturalism to be ineffectual and sparse with no real expertise. I wonder why it was included in the book, perhaps it was there to meet an imposed standard. Part 3 is redeeming with some practical and useful ways to turn the learning on in the classroom. This book is useful for a new nurse educator in that she has lots of strategies to choose from with a good base understanding. Respiratory Phys Provides The Basics
Respiratory Physiology provides the basics needed for a medical school respiratory physiology unit. By purchasing this book, a medical student is able to focus on the respiratory system in more detail than in some basic physiology texts.

Not useful for medical school.
This book might be a good review text for people who are already familiar with the material, but it can't be used as a stand-alone text. It just doesn't have the necessary explanations. I'd recommend sticking with the respiratory chapters in your favorite comprehensive medical physiology textbook.

Okay, but kind of cumbersome
First of all, I must say that this is an excellent book to get detailed information when you are in a bind in the OR.But the problem I have with this book is that it is sort of in a no-man's-land of materials.If I need the nitty-gritty on a subject, I go to Barash or Miller, but in the OR, I only need to get to the stuff I seem to have forgotten, so I go to Ezekiel. Mass General falls somewhere between too much information for the OR, and not enough information for home use.I've also found it rather difficult at times to find things with the small, cramped print. (Not to mention that it doesn't fit as easily as Ezekiel in the back pocket of your scrubs)
Good for the O.R.

"Clinical Anesthesia Procedures of the Massuchussets General Hospital" offers concise yet thorough coverage on all aspects of anesthesia.From preoperative visit to basic airway management, from fluid requirements of the surgical patient to specific considerations on cardiac, respiratory and liver diseases, this book has it all in an easily accesible way, especially when your above the "blood-brain barrier".I would especially recomend the chapter on resuscitation of trauma and burns victims, because of the thorough coverage of the subject, better than in many surgical textbooks I have read. ... THAT'S MY FATHER!!!
I first read the book when I was four.I am now, at the age of ninteen, a fully qualified obstrician/gynecologist, all because of this book.I have now, of course, read this several times, but it is still like reading it for the first time.As the title implies, my father is David Olive, the editor of this book.I fully recommend this book to anyone who is remotely interested in a profession as a gynecologist.

AMAZING
To put it simply this book is the BEST cardiology book for any medical student wanting to really learn and understand the complex topics that can come up in the field.It breaks down all the topics in simple format and gives you the physiology before each chapter.Not to mention it has all the cardiac pharmacology that you will need to know now, for the boards and then some.

Overrated but still worth buying
People often make the mistake of thinking that knowing this book forwards and backwards translates into a superior score.It probably doesn't.The pathology and physiology material in particular lacks both concepts and details that you will need for Step 1.Every edition of the book is laden with errors and should be used with caution.Finally the book is awkward to read and contains too many lists.

Good enough, but if you have already done kaplan and Goljan, you will find very little new things here. Still a fair review.

An excellent book for review AFTER studying everything else
This review would apply best to FMGs who have finished medical school rather than medical students who are taking their Step 1 at the end of their second year.

Hope for Our Sick Hospitals
Since we have had several personal experiences of almost dying or being infected after a medical procedure, we tuned into the PBS broadcast of the documentary "Good News... How Hospitals Heal Themselves". It was so revealing that we got the book for both personal and business reasons. In our business, ESF, Inc., we frequently deal with hospitals and those in the medical and nursing professions. Both my husband, Dr. Peter J. Esseff, and I feel this book should be read by personnel in every hospital from administrator to janitor. The "Systems Thinking" initiatives put into effect by the hospitals in the two "Good News" health care systems (SSM Health Care, St. Louis, Mo. comprised of 23 hospitals, and the Pittsburgh Regional Health Care Initiative, Pittsburgh, PA, comprised of 40 hospitals) demonstrated how a variety of "hospital diseases" could be treated and eventually eradicated. These initiatives were used initially by Dr. W. Edwards Deming in helping Japan "work smarter, not harder" in improving their auto manufacturing industry. In these two health care systems, statistics are given that demonstrate how the hospitals were able to: focus more on patients' needs; reduce costs, deaths, suffering, infections, duplication of services, waste of time and supplies; avoid deadly mistakes; streamline their bureaucracy; and work as a Team, from the top to the bottom of the chain of employees, by not placing blame for errors committed and empowering their workers to recommend changes to improve the quality of care in the hospitals.
Save your life....and others too....
Read this book and give it to your doctor and your hospital administrator and they will learn how to reduce waste, suffering, hospital-acquired infections, costs, errors and improve patient safety and save lives.And additional money or government regulations are not required to begin this improvement plan.

great review book, good for step 2's and 3's
I used this book a little prior to step 2's, but I put it in my regular cycle prior to step 3's, and I did really well.I probably read this book (or it's older sibling) 5 times through prior to step 3's in my downtime.It got me through.Good questions at the end of every section, reasonable pictures when they need it, and easy to follow tables.Overall, quick read, concise, gets you a good start to find the areas you need help in.This book can help you too.

I'm somebody who used several different sources in my review for all 3 steps.This turned out to be an excellent resource to use in conjunction with blueprints books, First Aid, and Prescription for the Boards for step 2 review.This would also not be a bad book to review while on clinical rotations. ... This book saved my @ss!
If you are reading this, you are probably preparing for an ABIM internal medicine exam in addition to all your other duties. There is never enough time, is there?Well, I was preparing for the ABIM recertification exam, and it had been 10 years since I'd finished residency. I had slogged through the Mayo review book over the course of five months, dutifully going over every page. Tres painful. There were three weeks left before the exam, and I figured I'd give this book a try. I quickly discovered how ignorant I was, despite doing the Mayo book.Charlie Wiener taught me a lot of critical care medicine way back when, and this text was a lot like sitting down with Charlie. If you are a former member of the Osler Medical House Staff (or did residency training at some other urban hospital), the case scenarios will give you flashbacks. The questions are well-written, and the answers give you really good feedback. The questions are highly relevant, reflecting what the ABIM wants you to know. There are a handful of errors here and there, where the letter of the answer in the key has a different letter than the same correct answer in the question... perhaps the editors changed the order of some of the answers or some of the distractor answers between editions. Mildly annoying, but not fatal.

Quick and concise
One of the better rapid review books out there, but not sufficient as a "sole" review source (although I don't think such a thing as a single review source exists for an exam such as this one).I found it to be a little more on target than First Aid, with better organization, more pertinent information, and concise enough that I could read it in just a few days.There were definitely some good things I picked up from it, and as with any of the review books you read, I would highly advise supplementing it with a lot of practice style questions. Good atlas, could be better.
I agree with the other review in that the actual real pictures were extremely helpful yet the depiction of tracts were difficult for me to follow at times.This is a required text for my neuroanatomy course, and it served a vital purpose.I like this text and would recommend it to anyone in the field.

Avoid!
'Blueprints Medicine' is absolutely not enough for internal medicineclerkship rotation and for the USMLE step 2 CK - without any doubt, it's one of the worst (together with 'Blueprints Surgery') of the Blueprints series.
Pretty good. Use along with other books depending on purpose.
This is a fairly decent book to read during medical school medicine rotations.It is comprehensive but I found that it did not include enough detail on many topics. You will without a doubt need some other sources during your rotation."Washington Manual" and Ferri's "Practical Guide to The Care of the Medical Patient" are both excellent.I found Ferri's book to be more helpful in terms of the organization, readability, and information.I was not at LSU, but came across the "LSU Notes." If you can find the "LSU Notes" in internal medicine, they are an excellent resource as well. The medicine "Pre-Test" book was helpful when studying for the shelf exam, although not all medical schools use those.
A Must for Your Medicine Rotation
If you want to learn internal medicine in a quick amount of time, pick up this book and read a chapter or two everyday. It's not that difficult. This is a must for you medicine rotation as it will allow you to get a breadth of knowledge relatively quickly. But in order to be a superstar you will need to read up from a serious reference book and/or UptoDate on your specific patients. You should do this for every rotation.
