I am reviewing medicine for fun
Well, I am not a candidate for USMLE, but I did enjoy reading this book as a good review for a doctor, for me it is more easy to learn new things in medicine with reading questions, this bood can be used with this idea with full satisfaction,

USMLE Step 3 Qbook (Kaplan USMLE Qbook)
I want to buy this book for our professional career. I do not regret buying this book. In addition, Amazon has the best price and reliability in the nation regarding buying books. I always buy books from Amazon. Keep the good work.

Good Questions, Poor Step 3 Review
I used this Q-Bank book to review for step 3 along with Crush.The questions in this book are good and reflective of the information covered in Crush.Problem is, the questions are in no relation to what was asked on Step 3.I thought I was going to do well on Step 3, I recieved 225 on Step 1, and 230 on Step 2, but somehow by memorizing crush and this Kaplan Q-Bank, I managed to do poorly on Step 3.I was very disappointed on test day to realize that none of the questions from Kaplan even remotely resembled the questions on Step 3. ... Excellent
Love it. It's the best book ever in differencial diagnosis.
Better resource for the Radiology Written boards than Orals
In the midst of my studying for the Orals, I have discovered that I use this book much less for the Orals than the I did for the writtens. Rarely some of the information is not up to date or wrong. The differentials are not weighted.For example In case conference, if you get a "double bubble" differential just start off with Ladd's Bands as your leading differential ( from the LADS mnemonic). Your Pedi examiner will shoot you down in flames.I am using Wittenberg's Primer much more than Danhert. Danhert's new edition is an improvement, but it is a limited resource.

I have been out of school for 32 years and recently needed to renew my ARRT license which I unfortunately had let lapse. I studed this book and the Appleton & Lange review and passed the test with a 90. I highly recommend this book for confidence in taking the registry.

AWESOME! A must-have for surviving Neuro!
If you're a medical student taking Neuro, get this book ASAP!At first, I thought it wouldn't be useful because it is so lengthy (400+ pages) compared to the other books in the series. However, it turned out to be an absolute lifesaver while I was taking the course. The neuroanatomy course at my school was very unorganized and poorly taught and our required textbook was way too verbose to be helpful. This book is very well organized and very thorough for a review book- you really don't even need a textbook, just a neuroanatomy atlas. Rather than getting bogged down in trivial minutiae, this book presents all the basics you need to know to pass neuro. It also has hundreds of review questions to test your knowledge as you go. I couldn't possibly have organized my study of neuroanatomy without this book- and thanks to Dr. Fix, I actually managed an A in Neuro! Taking the USMLE?GET IT!

One of the better books on comparing specialties
I would recommend this book to the undecided medical students in their 3rd year- I bought this early in my 4th year after having read Anita's book on Choosing a Medical Specialty, and still being uncertain. I was trying to talk myself out of Gen Surg... Ultimately, a book is not going to make the decision for you, but it is good to be informed and it helps to either reinforce what your gut instinct is telling you. Try to borrow a friends or buy a used copy- but it's definitely worth a read!

Great advise for the single med student
This book has great advise in it for the single med student.However, if you happen to be married and a parent most of the advise is far too time consuming and impractical.

Great study guide!
I just passed my recert boards again and thanks to this study guide didn't need to take an expensive and time consuming review course.Well worth it!!

PANCE Prep
Great study guide.Accompanying CD very user friendly.Entire book with questions and explanations are on the CD.Easy way to go through and review each specialty area and read the explanations for the answers.Few typos though.Best to go through the references to double check on a few answers.Overall very good study guide.

Worth the purchase
I found this book to be very helpful.Yes there is some incorrect info as stated by other reviewers but overall it serves as a good guide.I found the best way to study for the test is to do practice, practice, and more practice questions.Reviewing the AAPA review book was somewhat helpful but applying what I reviewed was what made the info stick.

Not useful to actually learn anything
I bought thsi book thinking it would have been a great purchase to just carry around (i.e. to work) so I can do practice questions when I had time.Well as I started in the biology section I found it very odd that a couple of the questions were repeated a couple of times.I don't see the point in trying to stretch out the number of questions in the book by repeating them.Another major problem I had which ultimately made me return the book was there were multiple questions with the wrong answer.I went into the store and showed them an example.The question asked which of the following molecules has the lowest molecular weight.First they gave the wrong answer as the correct choice, but the explination didn't even match up to the choice that was supposedly correct.I found multiple questions with incorrect answers and/or explinations thus brought the book back.If you don't know the answer to a question and are using the answer key to help you learn, this book sucks.I could not be confident in any of the answers to questions I didn't know based on knowing other answers were wrong.

Great purchase!
Having already taken the PCAT, this book is a great way to study without feeling overloaded.The questions aren't confusing and offer nicely detailed explanations.There are also plenty of review questions for each section.

Excellent Review
This book is truly a wonderful review book.It is well organized, has excellent pictures and tables, and focuses very well on high yield information.There are few things not covered such as optics.Some of the newer treatments in retina such as PDT, IVK, macugen, avastin are obviously not included.But a few other things that could be improved are discussion of visual field interpretation, corneal topography interpretation, a little more on surgical techniques, particularly cataract, and coverage of refractive surgery as this is now included on the OKAPS and boards.

Very helpful guide.
I found this book very helpful.It started by going through the PA profession, and then got into how to actually go about making this a career.It explains each step of the application process, and gives very helpful tips.Overall, this was a great book.I would highly recommend it for anyone considering entering the PA profession.

Good but outdated
I found the information about interviewing helpful but much of the information about the application itself was outdated.The book was written before CASPA was widely used.Also, the author provides a personal website and encourages readers to contact him with any questions, but this website is no longer around.This book is a good cheap purchase, but no substitute for advice from current students.

This is THE book for any aspiring PA prospect!!
I purchased this book the summer of 2005 to begin my "preparations" for entry into the 2006 application cycle. I had aquired all of my prerequisites for the program I was interested in and wanted all of the ammunition I could get my hands on in preparation for the interview process. This book gave me perfect guidance in all aspects of the application process. And if I can do it, OH MY!, anyone can do it!! (If you only knew me ten years ago!) Although I do have a few years of medical experience as a Certified Surgical Technologist under my belt, I applied to only ONE school this year and I just received the call last week for the acceptance! My first go round and I couldn't have asked for more. As competetive as most medical programs are this book, I believe, gave me THE edge to succeed. I can't praise the book enough for all of the insights this book includes, From written preparations to speaking patterns and interview scenerios. comparable to first-aid
I haven't taken Step I yet, but so far I have been using it along with my classes on system. It is very helpful.I love the charts!

Lots of High yield info
This book has a lot of useful info, probably more than 1st Aid, and the outline format organization is great to follow. So I think its best to either go with this book or 1st Aid. I recommend 1st Aid. It worked for me.

Awesome Book
Step Up is a great alternative or compliment to First Aid for Step 1. The systems-based organization of Step Up makes it an awesome review resource for unit exams if your school uses a systems -based approach. Step Up is particularly strong in terms of Pathophysiology and Embrology. If you are a visual learner definitely go with Step Up as the charts and diagrams in Step Up are far more numerous and in my opinion superior to those in First Aid.

brief and readable
This is an option for third year medical students who want a brief and readable review book in a prose rather than bullet point style.However it is by no means comprehensive and more in depth resources such as a surgery textbook should be utilized for presentations or for detailed investigation.It is suitable for the third year clerkship level.

Limited and too too General
Although Essentials of General Surgery has a place. It is just that "GENERAL".It has limited info about specifics related to procedures. See review titled MUSHY posted by another reviewer."Essentials of Surgical Specialties" is much more detail oriented.

Mushy
Lawrence's book tends to be controversial; some students sing its paens while others think its best use is in the recycle bin.I purchased this book with an interest in surgery and was overall disappointed.It does a decent job of covering all aspects of a surgical disease (pathophys, workup, treatment), but overall it's a mess.When I wanted a definitive answer, it felt like Lawrence would say do this, but some physicians do this, new research states this, etc.When you take a shelf exam, you can only give one answer.Lawrence made things hazy.This is how it work in the real world at times, but the real world also demands a strict answer.Next step is ____, next thing to order is ____.

Thought-stimulating
I really like this book. Its design is atypical for a "question-book" in that the format is not multiple choice; rather, the author(s) intend for the reader to reflect upon their theoretical and practical knowledge-base before formulating an answer. This makes this book thought-stimulating as opposed to standard multiple choice books, which may be good, but you will most assuridly never see those "same" multiple choice questions and answer-options replicated on an actual board exam. Dental Assistant
This book is very good. After being a chairside dental assistant for twenty years and on the job training, this is excellent for training someone in from scratch (which I am about to do). It is very detailed in some areas that an assistant does not necessarily use, but answers the mental questions about the Doctors procedures that one might never ask. It also teaches the basics and the in depth information that one would learn and want to refer back to that evening to review. It is a great book to have "before" you begin the job, so once you begin, you can understand the what and the why of the procedure. Decent
Many of the other reviews sound disappointed in the depth of the explanations.When using this book, it is important to remember that it is a REVIEW, not a teaching textbook.Kaplan definitely makes the assumption that you have had in-depth courses in the the subjects by making references to things but not providing much explanation.This book is best used, in my opinion, as a sort of checklist for possible material that could be on the MCAT.If there is any area the preparee is weak in, the best way to re-learn it is to find an actual textbook.
Overall a very good place to start
I have used the MCAT material on the CDs before. After studying other MCAT material regularly for about 12 weeks, I cracked open this book and software, and took the practice exams over the course of 4 weeks. I got this book dirt cheap using the strategies given in this other book me and my roommate brought from admissionsmystery. com which also a very insightful book. This book at times is humbling and punishing. The reading passages are long and confusing. Nonetheless, this book was pivotal in me achieving a high MCAT score. Yet of course you are taking the MCAT, you are going to having more reference material than this book.

a good book to start with
Personally, I found this book pretty helpful, and I have no complaints about it as I scored high having spent about half of my prep. time with this book. As I said, it's a good place to start. Beware, though, that this book alone will not be enough. As some reviewers complained, this book is not all that thorough, so it helps immensely if you have taken classes on the covered subjects and actually remember what you've learned. I personally had to use my old textbooks a bit to understand some things outlined in this book. But, MCAT being as comprehensive as it is, I don't think you can expect a single book to thoroughly cover everything you need to know.

very very good
I took Step 2 recently, and this was my main review source along with Secrets.I just got my score, and it was above my step 1 by far.Cases are very relevant, much of the content was on the test, and it was well written.Interesting reading keeps you awake; better than its Step 1 cousin.

Average not excellent
The glossy cover and the layout is impressive, but not much of the high yield stuff. The cases are pretty straight forward and so easy to guess.no colour pictures andpresentations does not serve to stimulate the thought process. May serve as asupplement to the step 2 preps ... Read more
