A useful text for western students
Traditionally, ayurveda has been taught orally, with reference to ancient texts like the works of Charaka, Sushruta and Vagbhata; references that are still used today. These writings, which are believed to date thousands of years, contain the eternal and universal principles of the natural science of ayurveda; however they also contain therapies and lifestyle prescriptions which are hopelessly archaic; and materia medica which are no longer accessible (e.g. opium and camel's urine!). With the spread of ayurveda to the West, there emerged a great need for a text that not only catered to the western mode of thinking and education, but that also made connections between the ayurvedic view of anatomy and physiology, and that of the West. This book attempts to do just that.
A "Complete Guide"
I've recently purchased several ayurvedic books and will be returning most of them now.This book has everything.I MUST have.It is very thorough and extremely interesting.Not just a rehashing of information found elsewhere.If you only have one book - get this one!

A must have for the Ayurvedic student!
Thank you Vasant Lad for this great tool that helps one unlock the truth called Ayurveda. Vasant Lad has presented a true text book that will become a companion of the modern day Ayurvedic student. Normally if one was to source concise information on the fundamentals of Ayurveda then one had the difficult task of studying the translations of Caraka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita and Vagbhata Samhita. While these texts are the foundation for modern Ayurveda they can be daunting to the student new to this amazing science. The only other method was to correlate information from books written by Vasant Lad, David Frawley, Atreya, Robert Svoboda, Subhash Ranade, Maya Tiwari etc.... and then one would build up a collection of information from different sources. Whilst this is not a bad thing (and I will continue to read books offered from these great teachers) finding enough detailed information was sometimes very hard. "The Text Book of Ayurveda: Fundamental Principles" is truly amazing. It is a must for the serious student of Ayurveda. Vasant Lad has indicated that this if the first of three, the next two dealing with; the clinical assessment of health and disease, and the management of disease. The contents of this book is vast, it covers all aspects of the philosophical foundation that Ayurveda stands upon, The Tridosha, Agni, The Seven Dhatu, The Fifteen Srotas, Ojas, Tejas, Prana, Digestion and Nutrition, to be honest this does no justice to what is actually in this textbook. Lots of errors
I noticed a lot of errors while using this book.When you are taking the exams - the answers don't match the rationale.For example - the book says the answer is #2, but the rationale matches the answer for #3.Not recommended.

MUST HAVE TO PASS
Love this book!Went through every question in the entire book as a review and also took Kaplan's prep class.Passed NCLEX with 75 questions.WOW!I owe passing to this book, seriously.If you're hard pressed for time, just do the questions in this book and learn from the answers.

good book
I used this while in nursing school and it is a excellent refresher and review after studying your text books & class lecture. I must admit I did not use it for the NCLEX because I misplaced it after Hurricane Katrina. I used the NSNA review book & Frye 3000 nursingbullets to study which were simplyexcellent and all you need to pass the NCLEX on first try. I still think the Lippincott Review is a good user friendly book so give it or the NSNA-RN a try. ... Read more

Excellent, comprehensive,and easy to use
The Manual is a complete guide to the AMA style and also an excellent grammar book.The topics are easy to find and the tables and lists are comprehensive.It is a great companion to The Chicago Manual of Style because it details the grammar preferred by the AMA and contains needed terminology.This is a necessary reference for medical publications proofreaders and editors.

A style manual you will rarely close
The specific goal of the American Medical Association Manual of Style: A Guide for Authors and Editors is to codify and collect the myriad instructions, rules, and dictums that AMA applies to the many journals, books, and other publications that are printed under its imprint. Always Exceptional

I have the current edition (30th) and I absolutely love it! Another plus is you are given a code to be able access their online dictionary as well!It's a great book with great illustrations as well. From what I can see it is very thorough. an inner journey
Atul Gawande's book "Complications" is a rewarding read on many levels.The reader is drawn in smoothly along a thread of entertaining medical vignettes.These anecdotes serve as the framework for a set of well reasoned essays that explore the inner life of the surgeon.Gawande's primary purpose is to convey thevarious challenges, surprises, and contradictions that he has encountered as a surgical resident.His scrupulous honesty in describing the motivations, limitations, exhilarations, foibles, and challenges of the surgical profession is refreshing.
Brilliantly written reflections of what it is to work in medicine
This book was required for a friend's ethics class and she could not stop talking about it! I had to read it, too, thanks to her. We are nursing students, about to embark on our clinical rotations, and have both been strongly affected by this real and wonderfully written book. Dr. Gawande really has captured everything for the reader, who is left profoundly more knowledgable about a challenging and difficult, but rewarding, profession. He is amazing!

A Glimpse Behind The Curtain
The medical profession, for much of its lifetime, has been shrouded in mystery. For many, the words and judgements of a doctor seem infallible, which is why there is often such incredulity associated with mistakes. It's only been in the past few decades that this has changed and people are learning that doctors are humans too. In Atul Gawunde's book, we get a behind the scenes look at his life as a resident in Internal Medicine and some of the truths that people must accept take place when they enter a hospital. What amazes me most about Gawunde's writing is his use of anecdotes to perpetuate his arguments and ideas. If you work in an ER or assessment setting...
I used this booklet as a quick reference in my work in a hospital ER and in doing intakes.It's meant to simply be a handy reference to the DSM criteria, and can't replace the study, consultation, and experience needed to understand the difference between clinically problematic and non-problematic behavior.If you work within the DSM/ICD/insurance system, and you've heard the phrase "justify your diagnosis" before, here's an invaluable and pocket-sized (well, for a big pocket) tool.

The Only DSM That You Need
This is a modest little book that you can fit into your pocket but it does everything that its big brother(the much more expensive, full version of the DSM IV-TR) does -- at half the price and with greater ease of use. While the unabridged DSM IV is pretty much a textbook of psychiatry, minus only treatment recommendations, this abridgement unpretentiously lists just the diagnostic categories and the relevent (concisely phrased) criteria. Professionals will find it a handy source of symptoms and diagnosis for insurance purposes. Non-professionals will find it usable for the purpose of diagnosing themselves, their spouse, their parents and problematic friends.

A Great Manual To Promote Mental Disorders !!!
The DSM IV-TR is a great book to promote diseases that fit the armaments of medications that the pharmaceutical companies would like physicians to use.

Review of Plumbs Vet. Drug Handbook
Very informational. The additions in the back of the book help very much,specifically Therapeutic Class Index. All in all, a fine book especially for the purpose I am utilizing it for, veterinary technician.

Great Resource!
This is a great resource for those of us who own pets with a number of medical conditions/number of medications prescribed.It makes it much easier to understand the medications, potential side effects and drug interactions.I feel like I can have a more educated conversation with my Veterinarian about medications and supplements now that I have this resource.I really like that fact that this book contains information about supplements along with prescription medications!Very useful!
Bigger is better!
When the box arrived I initially thought there must have been a mistake.I ordered 2 copies for my animal hospital and the box was big enough to hold two large city-sized phone books.Upon opening I realized the reason for the oversize box and suspect weight was that the books are considerably larger and thicker, and for good reason.More information (all the latest, of course), and larger typeset (which is helpful for all of us except maybe the newest of grads).Everything else is the same reliable Plumb we have become accustomed to going to for information throughout the day.If there is any problem at all its in that this volume is just a little too big to fit in the same spot in the "reference book drawer" in our pharmacy where the smaller version was kept.Come to think of it, the old Plumb spent most of its time on the countertop anyway! ... The Standard of Practice for Disaster Medicine

Clinical Anesthesiology
It is a good basic book that covers the essentilas very clearlyin not too long chapters. It is a good entry level book for doctors during their first year of residence in anesthesia.
Excellent!
This would be an optimal choice for most medical students with a special interest in anasthesia as well as for anaesthesia residents. It's extremely well-written, neither too detailed nor too simple. The authors write with authority, which is a good thing.
Still a great resource
I just updated my older, well read copy recently. This is still my favorite anesthesia resource, the book I grab when I want to refresh my memory about this or that.

A smart tool to review pertinent info for both the exam and clinical practice
I passed the Family Practice exam and this book was a great help! She knows how to present the right amount of appropriate information to make it useful rather than overwhelming. The summaries and tables were a big big help. I would also recommend this as a review book for anyone who just wants to brush up their basics for clinical practice.

The Best Review Book

Not as good as First Aid for Step 1
I was very disappointed with this resource for CK prep. I found Step 2 secrets to be far superior. I purchased and read First Aid for Step 2 CK based on my positive experience with First Aid for Step 1. Much to my disappointment, First Aid for CK contained quite a large amount of basic information that just isn't high yield on step 2. For example, the basic ins and outs of ECG. On the exam, pertinent ECG findings are usually given, and then you're asked to make a clinical decision (e.g. next test or step in management) based on the ECG findings and other data presented. Step 2 secrets is a much more clinically oriented review of material for CK. WARNING: don't rely heavily on First Aid for CK or you'll be disappointed. USMLE world and Kaplan Qbank are probably the best review resources out there, with review books serving as supplements. Unfortunately, First Aid for Step 2 CK was not very helpful. See my review of step 2 secrets, as I consider it to be the best text resource (remember, only as a supplement to online question banks) for CK. I'm not bashing the First Aid series because many are very good books. For example, First Aid for step 2 CS is right on the money (see my review of First Aid for step 2 CS).

I agree with other reviewers. It doesn't come close to the usefulness of Step 1. It contains too little information considered high yield in the exam. Definitely not to be used by itself.
Not bad, but not essential
Unlike the step 1 First Aid book, which was simply phenomenal (not to mention vital) for studying for the exam, the First Aid for Step II CK was a so/so text.It's fairly long, and wasn't as concise or as targeted as the step I book, and took more time to really study it and attain the same degree of comfort that I had after reading the first one.Some of this could be accounted for by the sheer scope of the examination itself.Not only does this cover all of the core specialty rotations (and a fair amount of subspecialty info as well) that you will be exposed to as a 3rd year clinical clerk, but it also needs to re-cover a good portion of the step I material that has been delightfully repackaged (i.e. those yummy glycogen storage diseases that you thought were gone forever.... think again!This time, they give you the vague clinical presentation, and then ask about the enzyme).

Four Stars, Not Five--Here's Why:
I'm a Hodgkin's patient who's almost finished reading this book. I found it to be an easy, quick read that felt good since it validated everything I feel about illness and life in general already. My guess is most of the reviewers who gave this book five stars are the same.
Dr. Siegel helped my spouse to live two years, three months rather than six months to a year
My spouse, Lynne Behar Eagen, upon initial diagnosis in November 1993, had stage four colon cancer.The prognosis was six months to a year. However, in part, Dr. Siegel's book helped her change her worldview, her way of seeing the world and responding to the world, which assisted her in living longer than was anticipated. My loving lady Lynne died February 26, 1996.
Inspirational
I originally bought this for a friend who was diagnosed with breast cancer. After flipping through it I had to buy two more copies, one for another friend and one for myself. Even if you don't have cancer, a disease or an infection I think you will find lots of inspiration and a lot of practical advice in this book. This book is an easy read. There are a lot of amazing true stories sprinkled throughout the chapters. I've always believed in miracles being possible when our mind/body communication is opened up. very basic
this book is very basic,if you have more than a year's work at a clinic you might be bored.A good beginner book for Vet Techs who dont have any in clinic experience.

Well worth the money
Consider this as the book that complete's Mosby's review.It follows the exact same contents but instead of being written in outline form (which condenses and leaves out alot of information), this book is written with full sentences and paragraphs.It reads well, filling in all the gaps in Mosby's without getting too over the head.The pictures are worth a million for all those things that were difficult to visualize.I highly recommend this book, even over Mosby's to study for the VTNE!You'll not only use it to study for the exam, but to keep it as reference in the future.

Treat Your Own Neck
very clear and useful information.Has helped considerably with my neck pain and headaches.

I wish I had read this book 20 years ago!
This book is an easy read, with easy to follow pictures of how to do the exercises, some of which are so simple that I can do them in my car while sitting at a stoplight.The book shows how to do about 5 exercises that not only relieve neck pain -they ward off future occurences of it.Also helpful was the photos of postures to avoid while sitting, driving, and sleeping - I didn't know how important that was.I also recommend "Treat Your Own Back", also by Robin A. McKenzie.

Get New Updated version instead!
This book totally saved my life.I picked it up on the way to a Christmas craft fair I was working...and during the afternoon I did a few of the exercizes along with some in Treat Your Own Back.The relief was instant.I couldn'tbelieve it!The only thing about these books is that Robin McKenzie has updated his method and combined both books into "7-Steps to a Pain Free Life:How to Rapidly Relieve Back and Neck Pain" by Craig Kubey and Robin McKenzie.So...get the updated version instead! ... An excellent pocket companion
High yield for all aspects of ICU life... as well as the medicine wards. It is very well written, with topics covered surprisingly well for its size. I basically ended up carrying this, its cousin text, the pharmacopoeia, The Sanford Guide to Antimicrobial Therapy, and The Consult Manual of Internal Medicine in my pockets. Thats all you need.

Must Have Text
This is a must have book for those who actually care to learn about implant dentistry from one of the leading figures in the field.Each chapter is well written and complete.You can access each chapter if you seek out specific information, or you can read the entire text front cover to last page.

For quite a few years this remains the most comprehensive and enjoyable book in my implant library.

I have been a practicing dentist for 29 years and restoring implants since 1991. Bathroom Humor. Next Time Print Your Material In The Stall With A Marker.
It's not a bad book if you enjoy middle school bathroom humor....about half the book is sexual humor. And for about 25% of the questions they dont know the answer.
Funny, interesting, entertaining, and "helpful"!
Somehow any further compliment to this book seems meaningless amongst the sea of positive reviews here. However, I still want to express my heartfelt appreciation to some authentic answers to some of my life long doubts, including:-
The 411 on all things gross and goofy
Funnier than the alarmist 1960s "classic" EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT SEX * BUT WERE AFRAID TO ASK. This post-modern medical answer book is more of a "Goofus and Gallant explain it all to you, and then some." It is mostly presented as short medical explanations based on questions doctors often get asked at cocktail parties after the other guests' inhibitions drop from their alcohol consumption. These tidbits include sexual and scatalogical curiosities, old wives' tales, and medical oddities bordering on urban legends. These informative, if odd, explanations are interspersed with verbatim email and IM exchanges (typos left uncorrected) between the coauthors--the bona fide medical doctor Goldberg (Gallant) and medical tourist Leyner (in the Goofus role). They have no illusions about the literary merit of their collaboration and are quite frank about the room in the house where their book is most likely to be read and shelved. Don't throw about your AMA Guide to Medicine, but DO read WHY DO MEN HAVE NIPPLES? for the fun of it. If laughter is the best medicine, you'll probably extend your life by at least another week or two. ... Read more

Getting into the nitty-gritty chapter of your life
This book immediately gets into the nuts & bolts of the pharmacotherapeutics with cool questions plus amazing rationales. My advice? Study your school lecture notes & review this book at the same time and you'll be amazed at what you've achieved in a month's time.

questions too indepth compared to the NAPLEX
I've been out of school for 14 years and erroneously believed the NAPLEX was more clinical than it was 14 years ago. I just took it in July 2005 and I can NOT believe how basic the questions are!!! this book will give you a good idea of your area of weakness.The few "clinical" questions in the NAPLEX were so elementry, I can't believe I wasted all that time and money on APHA's plus Appleton & Lange pharmacy review questions book as well as Kaplan's q-bank questions. I've been specializing in oncology for the past few years and I was not familiar with any of the new drugs on the market. Of the over 2000+ "test" questions between all 3 study aids, there were about 5 in my NAPLEX. I do a lot of calculations in my area of practice so I guess the study aids can help those who need help in pharmacy math. There were quite a few calculations in the "clinical" part. If I had taken this test last year without "studying", I believe I would had done just as well. If you were awake while practicing or in school...the NAPLEX is a piece of cake. There were quite a few 120+ scores.I wish someone would had informed me.
Get A Real Review Book Instead
This book is great for quizzing you so you know what subjects to brush up on. THe CD can also get you used to the CAT format. But having taken the NAPLEX after using this book and several others, you will never see these questions on the NAPLEX. The chances of seeing the same question is almost zilch. Its better to know your key subjects well (HTN, DM, HIV, etc) then learn facts here and there about everything. That's what this book does for you. Its a compilation of specific questions. I recommend a review book such as APHA's Comprehensive Pharmacy Review, or Kaplans Naplex review instead. ... Read more
