Well written...but some conclusions are just wrong!
This was a fascinating book.I enjoyed it and I learned a lot. I think the author didn't come to some conclusions which were painfully obvious. She continued to keep the theme of a culture that was impenetrable and would not change, even after thousands of years of persecution.What about after a few years of commercialism?It is only a matter of time before 2nd and 3rd generation Hmong will be completely assimilated into American culture.You could already see the signs when Fadiman described what the Lee children were doing now.Soccer, medical school, western music.It is inevitable.It is easy to keep a culture untouched for so long when you live in obscurity in the mountains with almost no interchange with the outside world.But when you put a TV in your house, the whole world is right there everyday.Now, the parents may not understand the language, but the kids sure do, and it will affect them.Twenty years from now, the shaman will be in the phone book and you can hire them perform at a kids birthday party, or there will be a class at the local community center on "Reconnecting to your Hmong Roots, all you need to learn in 8 weeks", just like the Native Americans, or learning hula dancing.When society is so connected by technology, you cannot live on a cultural island.I just don't believe it can happen.

Priceless
Most people who give this book negative ratings are just plain ignorant or cheap morons. The guy has done a ton of research to bring us this kind of information and he risks his life to expose the scumbag ripoffs in the food and drug industry. This book just shows how we Americans are brainwashed, tamed sheep, swollowing what we're given. Most of American food is sick and the sickness passes onto people. The milk you drink is filled with pesticides and growth hormones and even though all the scientists will say it doesn't have any effect on people, they're lying, why?because they'll get sued. That's right, there is no freedom of speech, even doctors have to watch their mouth. The fact is that the growth hormones and pesticides do transform into your body. Just why do you think the Canadians refused to feed their cows growth hormones?because they know what the effects are but us Americans, we're ignorant and lazy and we don't care. That is our attitude.So here's a guy that sheds some truth on what's going on in the food/drug industry and there's still morons who will badmouth him for doing so or some idiots who thought they'll pick up this book and all their problems will be solved. It makes me mad that there's such people out there who can misinterpret a book so badly.The guy never says you should get off your prescription drugs or try natural remedies before consulting with your doctor, it is written on the very first pages for crying out loud yet people come on here and write ridiculous reviews.Again, these must be the lazy couch potatoes who think picking up a book will cure their illness. No, you need to get off your butt on this one. If you want to be spoonfed pills, continue with your local pharmacy. I could go on forever how great this book is but I'll just say, ignore all the idiotic negative reviews and get this book and follow what it says,it's probably the best thing you can do for yourself. A Re-Directory for information
What little information this book tells you about those "natural cures" are already common knowledge. It goes on and on, ad nauseum, about corruption. If you want more information about certain alleged cures, the book tells you to go to certain websites, and when you get there, you have to pay. It's like buying a cookbook that hardly has any recipes, and telling you that you have to go online and pay up front. What's the point of buying the book if it only has a few recipes? ... Read more

Good introduction to HS for non medical types
Using this text for a distance learning course.Seems to provide a good introduction to the subjects of Health Services.Written on a level I can understand, not being a medical person, but a hospital support person.

Oddly parochial title ...
If this book is only about the US health service, why doesn't the title say so?There are quite a few other countries out there in the world, and almost all of them have health services!

An excellent overview
There is a very good reason this series is endorsed by the NPTA.Of the six or so books that I used to study for the exam, this was the most helpful by far.It reviews every topic on the exam, and is a great starting place to see what you need more work on.This is the book that got me a passing score on the exam, and I don't really think I can give it higher praise than that.

Great workbook
This book is a great study guide to prepare for the certification exam. The book is easy to read and it leaves out all the fluff that is in the other study books. After reading and doing the practice exams I found what my weaknesses were and was able to go back to my schoolbooks to strengthen those areas. I took the certification exam this month (March) and think I did fine; there are a lot of math questions in the exam and wish I spent more time in that area.

d�j� vu of the PMP exam
I had a very short time to prepare for the PMP examination. I took the decision to buy this software along with the PMP exam prep book by Rita Mulcahy. When I was taking the exam, I had a feeling of d�j� vu, thanks to this simulation software. Most of the questions in the exam were similar to the ones in this simulation software. In terms of PMP terminologies, this book's " 'benefit cost ratio' is greater than one".

Good reference, if you use common sense.
I just got my exam scores back and I got a 118, a composite percent score of 78 for the ADN program section I'm interested in, I'm not completely sure of my school's minimum standard, but the numbers look good to me. This book was helpful in getting me there. It contained very good information and practice questions that were very close in format to the real exam questions on the test. Having said that I say that this book is a valuable TOOL, not an answer book. You have to know the material in advance and then this book will be a great review for you. The formating is orderly and the summaries at each section are great for a brush up of the subject. Sigh....
Another ubiquitous book. A "must have"....i don't own one. Don't want one. Too big. People just buy it for the pictures anyway, has anyone really read the text in Zitelli's? Most people use it as an atlas to review for boards...My logic is, if you're gonna just use it for pictures, why not buy the atlas by Shah? There are other atlases out there that are less cumbersome and cheaper. Plus, do you think the pedi board people will take a picture right out of a well-known text?
Could not be better
This is the finest text a pediatrician can own for daily practice, board brush up and companion to the standard textbooks. It can fill many gaps inherent in the nature of pediatric training and is eminently relevant. If the authors never pen another things, they can be forever proud of this work. Brava.

Views the forest as well as the trees.
This book rocks. It is unbelievably well written and can be used by immunology students at all levels. Each chapter begins by explaining how what you are about to read fits into the big picture, it then explains how the section will be broken down and why as well as where in the book such subjects will be further discussed. As each section begins, another review pulls the details out from under the microscope and back into their place in the overall function. There are fabulous diagrams and each one has additional explanations written slightly differently than the body of the text, so if you didn't understand when reading thru the chapter, there is a 2nd chance for achieving understanding by reading the diagram explanations. All too often, texts this technical get lost in detail and and leave students with a fragmented understanding and lots of frustration. Not so with this text. Even thru the tuffest most technical parts when memory and understanding may get muddy, this book keeps you well aware of where your understanding fell off, you still have the big picture and a chronology that instills confidence in continuing through the material with a successful outcome.

Excellent Resource for the Serious Immunology Student
I am a first year medical student and I use this text as my primary immunology resource because it is superb.The chapters are very well organized by logical process, rather than arbitrarily divided into cell type.The writing is clear and concise, but certainly not spare on details -- Janeway includes the most modern information and current research.
Its almost the samething.
I use this book for college, I think it is more for graduated courses. The language is a little bit confusing. It lacks of an order and if you buy the previous edition you wont miss anything from this one. ... Read more

I am currently a second year PA student.This has been an amazing help on my rotations, all of them.I recommended it several of my classmates; they also love it.We have a test at the end of each rotation, and this is a perfect way to review. Just the facts without much fluff.It is also a handy reference in the clinic.

A book about love
Ms. Anand tells a wonderful tale of true love.Love of a husband and wife faced with unexpected challenges so early in their marriage, and how they struggled to keep that love alive under both sad and horrific conditions.Love of children for their parents and each other.Love of family, both immediate and extended.And love for each and every person touched by the fight for the cure. I was swept away by the human drama and just when I thought I knew what was going to happen next, the story look another unforeseen turn.It's amazing to realize that this is a true story.Life and love doesn't get any better than this.

It makes you think and it makes you care
This wonderful book has a lot of emotional depth and complexity.John Crowley, the young father, is brash, brilliant, arrogant, and ignorant.He makes personal mistakes and business mistakes, yet you remain drawn to his story by empathy for his desperation as he fears that his small children will suffer a slow painful death.It's an honest and interesting portrait of a real human being, not a one-dimensional hero.
Interesting - Read it non-stop!
Very good book - Interesting story.Highlights are the lengths a family goes through to help their children, and the inspirational message.I think the title is ironic, since there is not actually a "cure" for Pompe Disease, merely a treatment to help stabilize and possibly restore some muscle function.Also misleading a bit, because while Crowley without a doubt worked very hard on a cure, the actual treatment approved by the fda was not the main one he was involved with researching/funding.Nonetheless, still a very admirable man and good story. ... The Best Book on Borderline Mothers
This is the best book by far for anyone whose mother has borderline personality disorder. It is a book specific to this relationship whereas other books on the market try to cover spousal borderline relationships, etc. as well as parent-child and miss the depth found in this book. This is a must-read for adult children of borderlines -and it's not necessarily an easy go. The author has pegged situations/emotions with uncanny accuracy and puts words to what I personally could never accurately describe to an "outsider". Thankfully I have siblings and all of us have stuck together like glue over the years. I could never imagine an only child having to handle what we did. That's what makes this book so powerful -it is a voice, an explanation, a validation.

Very powerful and nothing short of amazing.
I am ETERNALLY appreciative and thankful to Dr. Lawson and her bold compassion. Until this book came along, the secret life of children born to such parents/caregivers remained silent, misunderstood, disregarded, unexposed, and considered surreal or unimaginable. Classic, gold standard
There is only one Hoppenfeld.For what it is, it's the best.It's all diagnosis.Not a word on treatment.But it gives a good review of not just the physical exam but also the underlying anatomy and biomechanics.Two other books are worth getting.Magee's Orthopedic Physical Assessment is a good background book to have on your shelf.It's written by a physical therapist, so the perspective is a little different if you're an MD or DO, but it's still useful.Lots of physical exam maneuvers.Cooper's Pocket Guide to Musculoskeletal Diagnosis is short and sweet and gives diagnostic work up as well as treatment insights.

good!
This was a very good book for coursework, especially since the syllabus from BOD wasn't that good. For the boards, I just skimmed this book, particularly paying attention to the end of chapter summaries...I read through first aid biochem, and any topic I felt was hard to grasp i would re-read it in lippincotts. recommend this for boards when studying pathways... rememeber only study and read about pathways that are represented in first aid...and pay attention to rate limiting reactions!!!

LWW Illustrated Biochem
An excellent book for coursework in both undergrad and first year medschool, plus the tie-in with LWW Illus. Pharm. is a great duet.Our first year biochem was horribly taught, this book helped immensely, and look forward to using it for quick reference review in year 2 and Board study.

Extremely helpful!
I did the chapter on substitution (Sn1 and Sn2) reactions in this book the night before my o-chem test (I wouldn't recommend doing that, by the way). It explained everything so clearly that I only had to do a few practice problems out of the book before I felt pretty confident about doing them. It's helpful that he breaks down the reasons that you're doing the things he's teaching, as opposed to a textbook that gives so many facts you don't know what's what.
Clear examples and straight-forward
This book is terrific.It's paperback and small so you have no excuse not to take it to school every day.Further, it's easy to hide it from your lecturer's eyes when you're bored with the lecture.By no means does the book replace your textbook, but it hones your rudimentary recognition and drawing skills so the rest comes easy.

The View of a Medical Oncologist
In my oncology practice, patients will often bring me articles or books on "alternative" medical therapies.I try to approach all of them with an open mind.One of the best chemotherapy agents ever developed is derived from the bark of the Pacific Yew tree.You never know where the next advance in medicine will come from.I tell my patients that I divide alternative medicines into three categories: known to help, known to harm, and not enough evidence to say one way or the other.
Excellent Book and very well detailed
I read a lot of comments here on Amazon about this book. I see very negative viewpoints. I take it that these negative viewpoints come from people who are extremely closed minded and stick with the "medical" viewpoint about cancer and such.
Adding selenium helps fight cancer
I have great respect for Dr. Clark and her cancer fighting program. However, I feel it is important to add that the nutrient selenium is also important in fighting cancer. This was demonstrated dramatically in a large placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical study -- the most prestigious type of scientific study of nutrients and drugs -- which showed that people taking 200 micrograms (mcg) of selenium daily had only half the death rate from cancer as those given a placebo which did not contain selenium.

An excellent strength training reference manual
I work out regularly, and when doing strength training, I frequently have questions about which muscles I am working, whether I am performing the moves with correct form, etc.I decided to read this book after reading the author's companion work, Women's Strength Training Anatomy, which focuses on lower body only, whereas this volume offers a full-body review.
Strength Training Anatomy
Excellent strength training manual. I actually own the original version, but just had to buy the revised one as well. Do not regret the decision. This a clear, concise, well-laid out guide to weight training. I've been lifting for 9 years so I'm pretty advanced. Since I need to change my routines every 4-6 weeks, I always look to this handy book to put together new ones.
