Essential to understanding biostatistics
I found this book clear, concise, and extremely helpful. I am not a numbers and theory person, but using this book in conjunction with strong classroom lectures helped me to understand the principles and methods tremendously. I see there are some negative reviews posted, but statistical computing can be a difficult process to learn, and I can understand how students might become frustrated if they lack the proper lectures to support this excellent teaching tool. I hope a few rotten classroom experiences will not discourage other customers from buying this book.

Better than most
I like it.I studied statistics and probability in the past, and find this book to be among the easiest to understand.Using this book requires having a basic understanding of the language and symbols of mathematics, as well as, the willingness to learn new mathematical concepts.Generally speaking, these concepts are not easy to learn.Rather than avoid the language of mathematics, it teaches statistics at a basic level.
the "never again" book for biostatistics
Let me just start by saying I really like math, but this book did not help me to learn biostatistics at all.It doesn't explain the issues and equations very well and it has absolutly no answers in the back to check with yours, that's a whole other book...and that only has answers to the odds.Perhaps this would be a decent book for anyone who already has a handle on the subject and wants to learn more, but if this is your first exposure to biostatistics, like me, try another source to learn from, this book makes a difficult subject near impossible. ... Just a good book..
This book is a good one, but has one little problem, the book doesn't have much coherence because there are too many people writting the book. You can note the difference of redaction between the chapters because were written for different person and that's what make the book very difficult to read, because one chapters are good, but others are very bad.
Clarification about the edition
This is the 10th edition, published in 2001. Not quite as 'out-of-date' as suggested by the previous reviewer. It is, however, dificult to keep these texts current.

Good....but out of date!
"Goodman & Gilman" has been the staple of pharmacology for many years, and with good reason. While I agree with the other reviewers that it is the gold standard, in the "old days" the book was updated about every 5 years, and this one came out in 1996. Given that the book probably took a couple of years to revise, the information is close to 10 years out of date! As is stated in the Notice on p. xviii, "Medicine is an ever-changing science." Tissue paper.
Probably great for PA boards and FP boards, but don't listen to the forums that recommend this for Step 2 or 3.

Too many errors
I'm studying for my third PA recertification exam and thought this would be a good tool to use.Unfortunately, this book has lots of mistakes, leaving me questioning what I know is correct.It has a great layout, is easy to read, and has nice summaries for each topic.But if you're unsure of the accuracy of the information, you end up going to other sources to study, which is double the work.

worthless book for USMLE Step 3
Everybody in my residency said that was the book they studied for their Step 3. The moment I turned a couple of pages I realised this will definitely not the way the Step 3 would be.

Unstructured and very disappointing
Reading Waking the Tiger was an extremely frustrating experience, for several reasons. Mr. Levine contradicts himself repeatedly in his writing. On the one hand he repeatedly claims that revisiting painful memories does no good to trauma victims. On the other hand, in the case stories he uses to illustrate his method, the trauma sufferers DO recall their memories, very vividly, as part of their healing. Also, time and again throughout Waking the Tiger, Levine hints at the healing techniques to be revealed to the reader later in the book. But when I reached the end of the book, those appearantly magnificently efficient techniques were still unrevealed - and the only substantial advice to the reader seemed to be to visit a practioner of Mr. Levine's techniques, thereby reducing the book to little more than an advertising poster.

a worthwhile read for those who have or have not experienced trauma in their lives.

A framework for understanding trauma
This is an excellent book for anyone who wants a mature view of what trauma is and how we heal from it. Peter Levine makes a compelling case that trauma is unique to the human species because our rational brains get in the way of the organism's instinctive physiological responses to life-threatening situations. In a case study near the end of the book, Levine clearly demonstrates his belief that re-exposure to traumatic circumstances as a way to heal must be gradual and at the organism's own pace. Cathartic experiences may be dramatic and lead us to believe we are helping, but in his view this approach risks deepening the traumatic symptoms. Start Here
This is the first book I read on Asperger's, and I am glad that it was.Tony Attwood is one of the leading experts on Asperger's.He really gets it and doesn't try to fit an Asperger child into a nt understanding of the world, but goes to the Asperger world.It has really helped me understand myself and my children better.Well done!I can't wait to see more from him.

At the very top of my list
My son was found with some type of High Functioning Autism about two months ago. I'm a physician and behavioral researcher, though not in the area of autism or anything related to children or developmental disorders. I've read many books, scientific texts, online publications... you name it, in the past weeks. I've obtained very valuable information from all of them. This book does not go into the details of genetics or the neurological issues around Autism, in which I'm deeply interested, but I got that from other sources. However, it was from this book that I could draw a clear plan of action for my son and my family. Mr. Atwood must be a very smart and practical person. So far, of all that I've read, I'd put this book at the top, with the much more academic though less practical textbook on AS by Klin, Volkmar and Sparrow.

ok
the book came in a reasonable amount of time but was not the same quality as was initially stated.It said the book was brand new but it had bent corners.

Book NOT in Good condition.
Company was prompt and service was great. However, the book was listed in 'good' condition and it is not. I can ignore the writing and hilighting but it had a defect in which it was missing about 50 of it's pages. To me missing pages does not qualify as 'good' condition. These people obviously do not check the quality of thier books.

Best Textbook I've Ever Read
I would like to find Neil Carlson and shake his hand. This is is without a doubt one of the best textbooks I've had the pleasure of using.

Okay, But...
This a good trigger point therapy workbook, complete with "rubberball" tools, but the problem is, once again, this therapy is being touted as the "be-all-end-all" approach to pain management and health.Trigger point is a modality, a bodywork modality, and needs to be recognized as such.Just as massage, reflexology,and shiatsu are modalities, there needs to be a line drawn so people don't confuse this with a health book.Gangi's book does much better in defining our path to balanced health, and also redefines therapies such as this one so people aren't confused or misled. High on the list because it's used in massage schools, but not the best for people wanting to find the cause of their pain, and then dealing with it.

A Useful Book for Me

An Absolute Breakthrough
At the risk of sounding overly dramatic, I will simply say that as a type I diabetic the advice in this book has improved my condition immeasurably. After 8 months of following its low carbohydrate guidelines my A1C has dropped from 8.7 to an all-time low of 6.4 and my daily insulin dosage has decreased by almost 40% (both long-acting and fast-acting). I finally feel a measure of control over the disease and am slowly getting some respite from the constant frustration that unpredictable fluctuations in blood glucose measurements inevitably induce. I must add that I have not even been following the program very rigorously and have chosen to pass on some of its more drastic aspects (to me). I do admit that losing most of my carb-heavy comfort foods was difficult at first (and occasionally still is) but the payoff is really so staggering that I believe every diabetic should be exposed to this information as part of their healthcare education and shouldn't have to buy a book in order to obtain it.
Yes and No; Better for Type 2s
Caveat Emptor. Removing all carbs from your diet to control blood sugar is like never leaving the house if you suffer from allergies. Following Dr. Bernstein's advice religiously without being in constant consultation with your personal MD is potentially very dangerous. Restricting ALL carbs the way he advises may help type 2 people who are overweight. Not for Type 1s who need carbs as much as we need insulin shots. I tried this type of diet and looked like a skeleton within a month. In a way us Type 1s have it easier, just more track marks, but removing all carbs and substituting them for these mysterious G/G crackers he praises can and will make you lose weight, give you more lows and create more problems. It may work for some, is probably very helpful for overweight type 2s, and a lot of the advice he does give is outstanding but please don't take it as the final word.

The Best Book on Diabetes That I have Ever Read
If you have diabetes, if you live with a diabetic, read this book.It's wonderfully clear in its explanations and arguments.Supplement it perhaps with the general writings of Dr. Andrew Weil on various foods, vitamins,and food preparation,but take a look at what Dr. Bernstein is saying about protein and carbs.This is a field where there is much disagreement, but I find this book to be convincing and extremely helpful.The best book on diabetes I've ever read. ... A great resource
It is impossible not to pass the American Board (re)certification exam in internal medicine if you read (and digest) this concise book. Provided you have had a good 3-year training in a decent accredited internal medicine program. I would also recommend adding to this book a thorough review of the questions and answers from MKSAP (Medical Knowledge Self-Assessment Program)from the American College of Physicians. Read more

A Stellar Work

Another WHO book
World Health Organization: Tumours of the Breast and Female Genital Organs (edited by Fattaneh A. Tavassoli and Peter Devilee) is the 4th in the Pathology and Genetics of Tumours series from the WHO. With an impressive set of multidisciplinary contributors from several continents, this book improves on previous books from that organization by representing a reasonable attempt towards consensus in their presentation of the various topics. The main strength of this book, as with others in the series, is that they are concise and emphasize the most salient points in each topic. While it is not meant to be an encyclopedic account of the various tumors, essential definitions, clinical findings, morphologic points, immunophenotypic variations and molecular and/or cytogenetic pathogenesis are well presented.This book does not resolve some of the more controversial issues in these fields (such as the prognostic significance of micropapillary patterns in ovarian serous borderline tumors or terminologic issues in intraductal breast proliferations), but at least provides another framework for further discussion. Simply the Best
I regard this as the best single text in radiology, and it's one of two that I use on a daily basis. I only bought it because someone stole my last one.
Great review
Not the most in depth source for MSK radiology but a great overview of important topics and their MRI findings.

The Best Musculoskeletal MRI Book.
Why can't all radiology books be written like this.I just wish that authors in other fields of radiology can write books like this. Great book for understanding the man inyour life
This book is very helpful in understanding depression in men.My husband and I have two copies and I have sent copies to others who are suffering from depression.
Brace Yourself
I am on my second reading of this book. My first reading profoundly moved and disturbed me. It's like having a veil lifted and seeing with a little bit more clarity some of those things about myself I've never been able to quite understand. If you've ever had those moments when you catch yourself wondering, "Why am I not feeling (emotionally) anything at this moment?" or "Why did I get that angry?" you might want to brace yourself for a very insightful and upsetting read. I went into this trying to do some research on what was going on with my son, only to learn a few things about what was going on with me, and also my father.

Not bad, but...
...about half way through this book I started to realize it's more a collection of stories intended to give this disorder a context for readers, rather than concise descriptions of what the disorder is and how to treat it. That said I'm sure many men recognize themselves in the stories and thus hopefully get some help or help themselves somehow. Worth reading... ... Read more

Very Very TRUE!
My husband and I both endured shame and guilt based rearing in our youth.Faced with the birth of our second child due this fall, we felt the need to close some old issues that continue to reoccour in our own parenting.We picked up this book and read it in one night.We cried because this book spoke to the very core of our issues and gave us great ideas into healing our past.I would HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who had a difficult childhood.

Finally some tools to work with
I am so grateful for this book as it has already given me so many insights. Somehow I thought that I was bad or defective, that there was something inherently wrong with me. Having read this book I realise I am the person years and my parents have made me into. A child whose family was dysfunctional and whose parents leaned heavily on alcohol as years went by, how could I have grown into a healthy young woman? Instead, I am an intelligent perfectionist, an over-responsible workaholic who tolerates being treated badly and neglects her own needs. However, I have been able to see that I can change - that I do have the right to learn to live a balanced and happy life. I also bought the work book that goes with this text book, and am thoroughly enjoying filling it in. My mind is working overtime making new connections and trying to make sense of my life, but I wouldn't change it for anything.

Not a good place to start
This is not a book for "newbies." If your family is f*cked up, you'll do better with information that is more basic to supporting your getting OUT, rather than how to survive being in it... ... Read more

A Must Have For Every Horse Owner
This Handbook is quick and easy to use.Packed with symptoms, diagnosis, and treatments, its index and contents help horse owners to quickly locate information when its needed most.Although the book only has black and white photos, they clearly demonstrate how tos, anatomy, and display common physically symptoms.The book also has charts and diagrams on every day equine topics such as worms and necessary vaccines.The last few chapters are designated to reproduction and are equipped with useful information for an owner thinking about breeding.

This is a good book to have. It covers everything that you need to know about your horse. I'm sure I will use it many times!

A wonderful, scientific voyage
This book offers a broad coverage of the underlying structures and processes of speech. Beyond a primitive stage, man is unique in his ability to convey information by using his voice. And he has developed this ability from systems designed for more vital goals (eg., respiration and nutrition). In this respect, the work by Seikel, King and Drumright proves a great resource for studying the entire apparatus involved in voice production and perception, specifically the systems of respiration (energy source), phonation (voicing), articulation and resonation filtering), mastication and deglution, hearing, and neural. Furthermore, it includes several appendices for quick access to anatomical terms, morphology of terms, muscles, sensors and nerves, and a review of pathologies affecting production of voice. What I liked the most about the book is that you are systematically guided through all the germane systems, and when pertinent, the book provides references for deeper understanding of the material. Besides, after you have read sufficient content, the book shows summaries for reinforcement of the learnt concepts. Also, there are clinical notes distributed throughout the text, with germane discussions (related processes, pathologies, etc.). And every chapter has a set of questions for assessment of your understanding (do not worry, answers are included!).

i wouldnt be where i am now without it
Like many other people who have posted their opinion of this book, I too have struggled for most of my life with Severe Depression, Severe Anxiety, and manic bipolar disorder- which led to a number of suicide attempts and constant ideation...Soon after finally recieving treatment, My therapist had recommended that i take a look at this book- at first i wasnt very motivated, but i decided that i dont HAVE TO do it in ten days- so i spread it out longer- doing one chapter a week and talking/discussing everything with my therapist. It was very helpful to have worked on it with someone who could help me understand everything and be able to help me look at MY situations and apply them to what i was working on. I cant even begin to tell you about what a difference this book has made im my life.

Very helpful adjunct cognitive therapy
This book was recommended to me when I went into a major depressive episode subsequent to job loss. I'm only part way through the book so far, but have found the exercises to be extremely helpful in understanding the negative thoughts that are contributing to my funky mood and seeing how distorted they are. The next part of the book deals with how to change these negative thoughts into more realistic ones. I'm looking forward to working through the rest of the exercises. ... Read more
