Epi for Public Health Practice
The book is very well written. Clean examples are given. The authors do a great job of avoiding complex and confusing examples. I bought my edition of Bradshaw's "Healing the Shame that Binds You" in 1988, one year after my experience with The Caron Foundation's ACOA treatment program.
An Excellent Starting Point for Recovery
From my own family experiences, I became numb to the world.This made the process of finding a solution difficult because I couldn't even find a starting point for recovery.This book was a fantastic source of enlightenment because it names, very specifically, the varying facets of shame and causes of depression.It helped me really put a finger on what I was wrestling with, and give me a "to-do" list for therapy.I don't think this book on its own will help you actually recover, but it definitely will give you a specific plan of action and greater understanding of how unhealthy behaviors perpetuate through generations.I believe talk therapy is the way to successful recovery because they can recognize unhealthy behaviors that you don't notice.Thankfully, professional therapists truly are a "safe place" to reveal secrets that tied you down.I'd recommend this book to people who felt numb like I did (and do), and need a way to regain some clarity.When you have the courage to face your darkest fears, you will realize it was worth a hundred times the pain in order to feel genuinely happy again. ... Unwieldy, unhelpful
Some people swear by this book; I don't get it.It's a pain to either read or to use as a referenceThe layout of this book is busier than that of an undergraduate textbook.For no apparent reason, brain images are slapped into sections of some disorders and not others.Ditto for lists of empirical studies.The authors feel it necessary to reprint as a box the DSM-IV criteria for every disorder--only the box appears in different places for different chapters.In fact, the structure of each chapter seems somewhat different, even across chapters on similar disorders.I'm not really sure about this, though, as the organizational structure of the chapters continues to elude me.And it definitely lacks some information that most people would find helpful.For instance, there are (I believe) only two decision trees in this 1400 page opus.And lots of space is wasted.It's unclear what the first 250 or so pages are doing in this book, doing a slapdash job of covering the entire lifecycle, the brain, Jean Piaget, Freud, IQ testing, and anthropology.These are bracketed by chapter 1, on interviewing, and chapter 7, on doing clinical examinations.Why those two chapters are not consecutive is anyone's guess.Do I need to go into the writing? It fluctuates between platitudes and stupefying detail.The case histories are well-written, but they are generally taken from the DSM-IV Casebook.
Synopsis of Psychiatry: Behavioral Sciences/Clinical Psychiatry
This is an excellent book.It was purchased for a social work class I was taking - Psychopathology and was used along with the DSM -IV-TR and was a great resource above and beyond the DSM.It is also very useful in my current job.It not only outlines all of the mental disorders in a easy to understand - detailed way, but it goes beyond that so that you have a real understanding of cause and effect.I would recommend this book to anyone who works with clients that need a diagnosis.It is a social work bible.

Condesed version of Big book, cutting out the fat
As known by many, Kaplan and Kaplan (or Kaplan and Sadock's) comprehensive textbook of psychiatry is pretty much the gold standard text book for the history and diagnosis of psychiatric illness used by all residencies and medical schools in the USA.This book is a thinned soft bound edition summary of the 2 volume comprehensive book.With this book, you still get many of the helpful tables, all of the information, and at half the price.This is no substitute for the Big book, but if you read this prior to any shelf exam in medical school, or as the basis for starting research into a disease in residency, you will have a good basis and diretion so your future searches will be easier, and the exams simple.Highly recommended, very good investment for Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and OB-Gyn residents/students to have on a shelf, and essential to psychiatric residents/students.

An essential and effective tool for coping with headaches.
I highly recommend this book as a comprehensive, patient-oriented primer on headaches. It is unique when an authority such as Dr. Buchholz succinctly presents both academic and experiential information on a common disorder which seems to have eluded resolution with most healthcare practitioners. He systematically provides an overview of the field through his extensive knowledge of research, anecdotal reports and experience with a myriad of patients. Having been a patient of Dr. Buchholz, I can emphatically attest to the wisdom, compassion and understanding that he brings to his treatment dynamic. By presenting a stratified educational, behavioral and pharaceutical treatment protocol, he provides not only a foundation for prevention but a unique vehicle for patients to assume collaborative responsibility for their treatment outcome. Heal Your Headache - The 1-2-3 Program
I first began having migraines when I was eleven years old. Sometime in my mid-forties, these increased in duration and intensity to about fifteen excruciating days a month. I tried everything that was offered by a variety of doctors - abortive drugs, prophylactic drugs, bio-feedback, acupuncture, chiropractic, hypnosis, oxygen...Nothing helped. I was desperate. Then I saw on Good Morning America an interview with a woman who had been all but cured of her migraines. She had practiced the guidelines set forth in the book Heal Your Headache by David Buchholz. I immediately ordered the book. As soon as it arrived, I began to follow Dr. Buchholz's 1-2-3 Program. In about two weeks, I was noticing improvement. After three months, I was down to three days of migraine a month with much less intensity. It has been about three years now, and I am still doing great. Every now and then I'll have migraines six days a month, but that is still a long way from the fifteen I had been having. I can say without reserve that Dr. Buchholz has given me my life back. I am deeply grateful to him! If you are a migraine sufferer (and you must be to be reading this) please read this book.
Great book
This was a eye opening book...I have had migraines for over 10 yrs.I have been thru every doctor, drug, book, diet, etc that I could find.Either they wouldn't work or would work for a short period of time.

Excellent Statistics Book
Intuitive Biostatistics takes a confidence interval approach that should be required reading for all persons interested in statistics. His discussion of basic statistical concepts in the context of interpreting lab test results is clear and informative and introduces the reader to Bayesian concepts that are presented very simply.

Exceptional, the best book on the topic
If you have the vaugest inkling that you are a narcissist or are in a relationship with one, buy and read superb book immediatey.Sam has done the world a great service by elucidating all the manifestations, deceptions and behaviors that are created by narcissism.Since narcissism is so accepted in our culture, it is at first hard to see the damage that it can do, since narcissists make such entertaining and accomplished people.Yet the damage to themselves and others can be catastropic.As a narcissist myself, I can tell you that this book has played a tremendous role in my own healing.If you are a narcissist, amaze the world by reading this book, taking to heart what it has to say, and changing yourself for the better.You'll enjoy life a lot more, and people will enjoy you more as well.My only complaint is the high price of this book--but it is still worth it, and still worthy of five stars.

Medical Physics Bible!
I find this an absolutely fantastic book. It really is the bible of medical physics for radiotherapy. I had the second edition until it fell apart, and just purchased this new third edition. It explains virtually every single thing you need to know in therapy- from a theoretical point of view.
Much better books available
When I started working in Radiation Therapy, somebody recommended this book to me to learn the theoretical aspects. I am also required to teach a resident lecture out of this book. The more I use it, the less I like it. While the book may contain information on all basic and necessary topics, the way they are presented is less than optimal.

Early 90's version- A+
I also have the early 90's version and it is great. All of the recipes are kid-friendly and family-friendly. I can whip up any of these recipes in a hurry or allow my 6 year old or 2 year old help out. I haven't seen the new version with the colors but this one has mormal font and pictures of each recipe. It is like a grown up cookbook but with the kids favorite foods!

Where did they hide the batteries to power the colors???
The classic easy-to-use and pantry-friendly Better Homes and Garden Cookbook is pretty much in every kitchen in America and chances are, it's already in yours too.If so, then then there's nothing in this obnoxiously-colored cookbook for kids that you couldn't find in either the adult BH & H cookbook or a back issue of Family Circle.With a few exceptions, (most notably the breakfast pizza and the Hula Stir Fry) it's all extremly standard fare.The only thing that sets it apart is the crazy fonts and colors so obnoxious that I had to wait ten minutes between reading it and writing this review so I could see straight again.I mean, are you really in need of another chicken nugget recipe?Isn't there anything more interesting they could come up with?And it isn't written to make the cooking any easier for kids--they might as well grab your adult copy and save their vision.

First things first this review refers to the early 90's New Junior Cookbook. Second of all I am not a kid I'm just a 23 year old who lives in an assisted living Duplex who is learning how to cook to become more independent.

Excellent but a little too big
I found out about this book my second month as an intern. I wish I had known about it when I was a med student. It has basic review of disease processes, lab interpretation, procedures, and a drug reference. The procedure descriptions and illustrations are probably the best of any reference I have seen. The only problem is that it's a little too big to use as a pocket reference. I keep it in my on-call bag.

I really have found this book useful, but it will weigh you down and hurt your aerodynamics.I liked the sections on labs and differentials as a 3rd year, and found the procedure walkthroughs to be useful as a 4th year.For residency I plan to go completely with the PDA.

Neurology of Eye Movements
Many medical textbooks merely describe the clinical features of eye movement disorders. What I enjoyed about this book was that the authors provide excellent descriptions and explanations of eye movement disorders.The explanations of why these disorders occur provided me with a depth of understanding that I did not have prior to reading this book.The chapters on eye movement physiology, anatomy and clinical disorders are very comprehensive, well written, up to date and well referenced.The book is also offered on a CD-ROM with videos of eye movement disorders.I strongly recommend this book.As a neurologist, this book will be very useful for my clinical practice.

A Must For Design Engineers
This book covers all the fundamental issues related to bolts and bolted joints. It is very easy to read, and does not go too deeply into technical subjects, but gives the reader a full appreciation for the issues involved.As a materials engineer I appreciated the section on bolting materials. Asa design engineer, I found the sections on designing bolted joints veryhelpful. As Plato expressed long ago, the wiser you are, the less yourealize you know. State of the art
Essential material and systematic paths of therapy by the experts' experts. An excellent tool at last !!!
I am a second year MSW student who works in a mental health clinic.I have found this book to be extremely helpful and practical in the treatment of depressive and anxiety disorders.My supervisor even purchased a copy of this book after she saw my work.Clients respond well to the interventions suggested, and they feel like they are finally being understood.It also forces the worker to be thorough in their work.

Your whole family should read this book
A person like this ruined my life, my nephew's life and my child.I ended up seeing a psychiatrist as part of my recovery after the incident and she recommended this book.I wish I had read it before I met the psychopath and I would never have been drawn into his manipulations and deceptions.These people are out there among us and you probably already know at least one.The only way to protect yourself from them is to know what to look for.My psychiatrist promised me that once I read this book, I would never again fall victim to these people.She was right; I have since been able to identify them and avoid them.I recently lent this book to my neighbor whose teenage daughter was deceived by a teenage psychopath and who was beeing ruthlessly lied to, manipulated, stalked and harassed by him.Read this book and share it with everyone in your family. It has been a blessing to me and mine.

Is Anything Being Done?
Like many people, I have a person in my social circle who manifests most, if not all, of the symptoms described in this book.Deceitful and manipulative, lack of empathy, irresponsible, impulsive, need for excitement, etc.Dr. Hare says that there is no evidence that there is a cause/effect relationship between early childhood experiences and psychopathy.However, it concerns me that he frequently equates good parenting with a stable, professional household.Abuse can and does occur in well-to-do homes.Poor families can and do provide loving homes. I have known my syptomatic person since birth.She was unwanted, unloved, emotionally abused, and probably also physically abused (thought I never witnessed the latter).The feedback she got from her mother was not related to her behavior.Once I asked her why she lies habitually.She said that she thought it was probably due to the fact that from the time she was a small child, she never knew what would throw her mother into a rage, so she never told the truth until she could drop a few lies to get clues as to what might be acceptable.The sad thing is that she has a new baby, is living in a room at a stinking flophouse at the beach, looking for a man to hook up with.Watch out, guys!!

Awesome view of someone you know...
After reading this book made me realize what I suspected for a long time. A close family member appears to be a psychopath. After many years of struggling with this person, this book has opened my eyes to see that by adulthood, many psychpaths do not change. Thanks to this book I have taken a drastic decision to walk away from my situation/ relationship with the suspected psychopath. The checklist matched line per line with this individual. Even some quotes in the book rang very similarly to what my family member has said in the past. Chilling but very liberating facts. I highly recommend this book to any one because in our lifetime we all have encountered a psychopath. With varying degrees of the condition.
