I read this as a student in my 3rd and 4th year. This book will help you be a better physician, no matter what specialty. If you buy one book your entire career, this is it.

Most accurate and cool. Go on editors...
I'm the physician who've alredy suggested HPIM to use color boxes, to summerize many longer chapters like infections, to enlarge many chapters like cardiology, to make pocket version thinner and larger, etc. You editors, reall proffesionals. Because you follow the readers. Do you read the other feedbacks? You see most of other professionals thank for the same topics. Now, I'd like to suggest three more thing, which have not been performed yet: HPIM must be reduced (it must be only one volume) and editors need to follow updates more. Medicine is not AIDS, only. Do you follow the latest datas related to diabetes, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, etc. Because their prevalence is higher than 10%. If you think about these suggestions, I think HPIM may go on to be no 1 in this field. I'd like to write more to editors and publishers if they reply.

Also great for specialties outside of internal medicine
So, everyone knows that Harrison's is the Bible for internists and residents of internal medicine.As a 3rd year medical student, I used the book to research whenever I had to give a presentation or wanted to know more about my patients.

I got the book for my ICU rotation, its a easy read. Goes over the imp stuff and the basics too. Liked it a lot.

excellent book overall
Too little details in places (mechanical ventilation) but too wordy in others.Excellent cardiopulmonary phys review, good breadth of subjects.Kinda big book but fast reading.

This book is rare because it is original. It welcomes you to the real world of critical care as seen by one expert physician. It was probably never intended for quick reference or board prep. Handy Medical Guide
If a doctor gives me or someone else I know a diagnosis, I can look it up in the Manual and get a straightforward, detailed writeup about it.I always use it in conjunction with a doctor.

Emergency Medicine: Comprehensive Study Guide 6th edition

This book is an excellent learning tool!
This book is a great textbook of emergency medicine, and I've chosen it over others simply because it's comprehensive without the useless drivel.Each section includes the necessary anatomy and pathophysiological considerations for the respective disoders.The subset of conditions are mentioned with just enough facts to understand the morbidity to treat it.The pictures, diagrams, algorithmic flow-charts, and drug regimens are a nice compliment, however, most of your clinical experience is going to come from interships and residency, so to assume this book is all you'll need to get by in EM is crazy.I still think it's the best out there to read before putting your mind to work.

Downward Spiral on Autopilot
*Emergency Medicine, A Comprehensive Study Guide* has long been a well-regarded standard emergency text, useful in day-to-day practice as well as for board preparation.This new edition has advanced the enlightened 'evidence-based recommendations' for changes in practice patterns, however, the lack of editorial control has resulted in a book packed with conflicting information.Each chapter is written by a different consultant, and unfortunately not all of them are up on this concept... we therefore get a series of conflicting statements when there is overlap in topics, and there is no attempt to reconcile this variability.Admittedly, opinions in much of medicine do vary; but outright conflict within a few pages in a standard text without discussion does harm to credibility.Read more

Recipe for success ...
This is a must-have for the I.M. CERT exam. The starred items, my favorites, pointed to recently asked material, which made my studying alot more enjoyable. In my opinion, nothing comes close to Frontrunners' review. My partners used it for their internal medicine RECERT and were equally pleased. As for me, I wouldn't have passed without it. Make sure you get through it at least twice before the exam since there was a load of material on the exam right out of the syllabus. I also went hit all of Frontrunners practice Q&A for the I.M. boards and got both from their www.frontrunners.info website (they had samples there, etc). In my opinion, if you're serious about passing or want to excel, you'd be foolish NOT to get a copy of these, even from a friend, before sitting for the exam.

this book is not worth the price
I was shocked after going through the book.This book is extremely inadequate for boards.you may get other reviews at one-fifth price.

Internal Medicine Board Review Course 2005-2006 Exceptional
My partner and I got the av-3 package from their www.frontrunners.info website in preparation for the August internal medicine board review exam because we simply had to pass. The package we got had this syllabus, over a thousand practice Q&A, obviously a huge plus on the exam, and the Audiovisual CDs from the review, which were the best we could find anywhere. We just got our board scores back from the ABIM and both of us scored in the top decile, 10, in all areas but one (which was the one chapter he didn't have time to read). Hope this information helps others who are in a similar situation, have to pass "or else", and are simply looking for the best internal medicine board review out there. Exceptionalreview. I have read this book like there is no tomorrow, and this book is excellent on the ward and off. I can't wait for the next edition. I suggest to buy it and read it.

good resource for IM residents
It's very resourceful.Just a bit heavy to carry around.I should have chosen the PDA version.

Great for review, but you will need to go deeper
Although I consider this to be one of the best handbooks for a quick superficial review, there are several other books which allow for more in depth learning while on the wards... such as The Consult Manual of Internal Medicine & of course... The Washington Manual. I would definitely carry around, or at least have handy, one of these while on the wards. If you get Pocket Med, make sure you get the new edition (2nd) as there is a new neurology section which is very nice. ... Read more

An ideal and a superb text
This book is a classic reference text in neurology surpassing any other book in the field . Every resident in neurology should possess one and neurologists are no exemption . The minute details in genetics are kept to the bare minimum and at the same time the clinical aspects are stressed . The neuroanatomy and physiology at the beginning are simply fantastic. Kudos to Professor A. Ropper .

It's not the most complete reference in neurology, but it's objective, go straight to the point, suitable clinical information. I recommend.

Absolutely essential. Excellent coverage of topics. Easy to use format. A can't live without it book. I use it daily.

Great!
I am currently a second year PA student.This has been an amazing help on my rotations, all of them.I recommended it several of my classmates; they also love it.We have a test at the end of each rotation, and this is a perfect way to review. Just the facts without much fluff.It is also a handy reference in the clinic.

It became boring. Look at the endocrinology section. It claims if there is only one study related to selenium theraphy in autoimmune thyroiditis in the editions of 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006... Great christmas gift!
I got this book for as a christmas gift but since it came unwrapped, I checked it out right away- it is awesome! This second edition has a smooother look to it, with more radiographs and tables. I have always been a fan of the margin tips and this edition does a great job with them. I have my medicine clerkship coming up next and already feel I am ahead of the game.

An excellent pocket companion
High yield for all aspects of ICU life... as well as the medicine wards. It is very well written, with topics covered surprisingly well for its size. I basically ended up carrying this, its cousin text, the pharmacopoeia, The Sanford Guide to Antimicrobial Therapy, and The Consult Manual of Internal Medicine in my pockets. Thats all you need.

Good Supplement for Internal Med
Case Files is well made and good at what it covers.The format is very readable, giving you a scenario and making you think of a diagnosis and plan.It's much better than skimming a heavy albeit more complete text.That said, while 60 case scenarios are a lot, it can't hit everything, and it's important to have a wide base of knowledge for the Internal Med Clerkship.I read this after reading First Aid for Internal Med a few times, and while I picked up a couple of things that I had little clue about, it mainly reinforced what was in that book.I would recommend Case Files for people who 1) like the scenario format and can't stand outlines/bullets/texts2) are close to taking the shelf exam and want an indication as to how questions might be constructed.MKSAP, however, is probably the closest to the exam you can get.Once again, this is a great supplement, but I would not use this as a primary / singular source.

Fantastic study aid
I used this book and did quite well on the shelf exam.I recommend it to anyone who wants to do well on an internal medicine test.It's very complete and the cases allow you to integrate a lot of knowledge in one scenario.

Best Practice for Internal Med Shelf
This book is basically MKSAP 2 except with different questions.That's good since MKSAP 2 was well made.There were several things I liked about MKSAP.It covered a variety of illnesses and grouped them by symptom (so if you felt weak in pulmonary you could easily find sections applicable to that field).The American College of Physicians wrote it, which is quite comforting.It references appropriate research articles for every Q&A.Finally, like a shelf, it forced you to make tough decisions.In reality, you order just above every lab and whatever imaging you need to cover yourself.Board questions, though, make you choose the best test from what you would always order.

A great resource
It is impossible not to pass the American Board (re)certification exam in internal medicine if you read (and digest) this concise book. Provided you have had a good 3-year training in a decent accredited internal medicine program. I would also recommend adding to this book a thorough review of the questions and answers from MKSAP (Medical Knowledge Self-Assessment Program)from the American College of Physicians. Read more

Excellent but a little too big
I found out about this book my second month as an intern. I wish I had known about it when I was a med student. It has basic review of disease processes, lab interpretation, procedures, and a drug reference. The procedure descriptions and illustrations are probably the best of any reference I have seen. The only problem is that it's a little too big to use as a pocket reference. I keep it in my on-call bag.

just a bit too big
I really have found this book useful, but it will weigh you down and hurt your aerodynamics.I liked the sections on labs and differentials as a 3rd year, and found the procedure walkthroughs to be useful as a 4th year.For residency I plan to go completely with the PDA.

i found your book excellent in bedside procedures and normal values but unfortunately i have not found enough guides in clinical pictures (diagnosis)and full investigations for separate disease entities to help inquery bizzareclinical presentations in our wards ... Read more

Excellent book for 4th year Medical Students
This book is extremely well written and has all the information you are most likely to be pimped on.When residents have seen me reading it they say this is one of the best books around and that this new edition is extremely well done with the use of color and organization of topics.Most of these same residents will whip out their old copies and ask if they can compare the two to see if its worth them buying the new edition.
Buy this book if you practice Anesthesia
Great reference! I am a Nurse Anesthetist and I use this book almost daily with my clinical students. The book is direct and to the point. It is logically arranged and well written. I also have the second ed. and this is a vast improvement. I ordered several for my fellow anesthetist. Nice job Dr. Duke!!!

Impressive
As a nurse I have worked in PACU for a couple of years, but it was only after reading through this book, temporarily abandoned on a table in the unit by one of the residents, that I realized of how much about the subject I was quite ignorant.I decided to remedy the deficiency by reading more on the topic.Although we had a number of books on the nursing aspect of anesthesia, I found that most of them bogged me down in things I really didn't need to know to do my job.It was interesting to learn about the demographics of PACU nurses or about the amount of space needed for each patient bed, for instance, but it wasn't really helpful.I decided to purchase the book the resident had been reading, Anesthesia Secrets.I wasn't disappointed.

HARRISON'S is synonymous with clinical books that worth their weights in gold. This 15th/ed CD-ROM maintained that tradition. It adds the much-needed portability to some 2700-paged heavyweight. I have been reading Harrison's Medicine right from my residency. Its a fabulous book one can refer to as an undergraduate or postgratuate student. However for a practitioner one would prefer to have little more stress onmanagement details. Adding audio to CD of the same book will make it moreuseful.Read more
