A true life horror story
A really compelling read! I could not put this book down. Before I read 'The Hot Zone' I had never really taken much interest in virology. Richard Preston writes his account very effectively in the style of a novel, but the fact that the horrors of Marburg and Ebola that he describes are actually true, gave me many sleepless nights. A frightening aspect of these filoviruses is that their source has still not been found. If only all non-fictional books were as readable as this!
Truly terrifying from the start to the end
I am someone who loves classics... so I never read this kind. But I happened to read it on my trip to east coast. I finished within 2 days. At first, I was scared, then i accept the truth... it became better. And it's so good from the start to end... So realistic, u can touch the grip of it... feel like it's happening around the corner.
Sub-par
I've been wanting to read this novel for several years now.Taking Virology during my undergraduate career only peaked my interest in reading about Ebola in a novel-style context.There's not much known about the Ebola virus, even to this day, and I was intrigued to see how Preston would incorporate this knowledge (or lackthereof) into his book.While the subject matter is extremely interesting and engaging, I will have to agree that his writing style is sub-par.I found myself skimming through whole paragraphs because of his mundane and repetitive diction and syntax.If it had been written by someone else, I think I could have immensely enjoyed this book (I'm a major science nerd, and I love reading science books).The only thing that kept me going to the finish was the fact that the entire novel was riding on the subject matter Ebola itself.The virus was what kept the novel going (I actually enjoyed all the factual paragraphs about Ebola...reminded me of the course I took in college! Haha, that, and I like seeing how factually correct Preston was).Overall, it seems like most of his facts are correct (there are a few things that I would contest, but that's besides the point), but honestly, the book was a bore...which is a shame, because it's written on such a fascinating subject.

You don't need to be afraid of Statistics
This is a very friendly statistics book.It is easy to read and understand.The authors also throw in some humorous comments now and then that is something you wouldn't expect to find in a statistics book and this seemed to help with the reading.Many real world business examples are used in the book.The example problems and the end of section or chapter problems are from different areas of study such as business, political, social sciences, and science. This is great for understanding how to apply statistics in real life.I would have to say that all the topics and formulas are explained very well.In some cases there are more then one way to write a formula and Sanders and Smidt makes a point of giving you both formulas.You can decide which formula works for you.The book comes with a CD loaded with the data files for all the problems so you don't have to spend time keying in data.There are copies of the data files come in a variety of formats such as Minitab, Excel Windows, and Macintosh.For most of the example problems the book takes you through the steps using Minitab Statistical software and the TI-83 graphing calculator.You are not only learning statistics, but you are also learning how to use Minitab and the TI-83 graphing calculator.In this day and age if you are going to do statistics you need to be able to do it with a computer.I wish they would have also included examples using Microsoft Excel, which more people are apt to have then Minitab. Personally I use both Minitab and Excel. I actually enjoyed reading this book and looked forward to studying.Even though my statistics class is over this book will not be collecting dust for a while as I plan on going back through it to reread or finish reading what I missed or skimmed over. There are still a lot of the problems that I want to do to reinforce what I have already learned.This is a great statistics book to keep as a reference. The book you need
As an infectious disease fellow, I recommend that anyone who want be an ID man should have such a book. Most infectious problems and diseases have been detailed in this book, although there are far going of emerging diseases and new antibiotics. A good clinical microbiology text
The two volume set is indeed a comprehensive reference work, but individual chapter can be read by themselves. I use this book on almost a daily basis, the only negative against it is that such a large book by its size can only be updated at intervals of a number of years so a folder in which to put your acculated journal articles next to it, until the next edition is advised as, infectious diseases is not a static field. Since there is a CD rom available now that may well be worth checking out. In closing for anybody involved in anything from clinical microbiology to a infectious disease specialist this book is a must.

A must-have!
This little guide may seem confusing at first glance, but it is quite helpful once you figure out how to use it!You'll still need a prescribing reference for dosages, etc. but this gives you a place to start.

A must on the wards
Always a great help for any medical student or resident, especially in primary care. If you're going to be culturing something, you need to know what to treat empirically with until the C&S comes back, and that's where Sanford's is a great help. It's not quite an ID consult, but it works until they show up.

Great daily reference--in clinic and hospital
Great quick pocket reference, use it daily for both out-pt and in-pt infectious disease treatment.Details first line therapy (and includes pediatric doses), and gives concise clinical criteria for back-up choices (eg. treatment failures, associated comorbidities, drug allergic patients).

The Clearest and Most Useful Book on HLM for Longitudinal Studies
This is simply the best book for those analyzing longitudinal data (data measured at more than one time point).Singer's coverage of Hierarchical Linear MOdeling (HLM) is clear, well-written (sprinkled with humor, it's like a lecture by the most popular prof. at your school), and geared towards researchers who need their programs to run, not just learn the mathematical underpinnings. Singer and Willett (the coauthor, not listed above!) set the standard for presenting math/statistics book examples.
Breaking down complex analyses
This is an excellent book. Multilevel modeling and survival analysis are becoming increasingly important in psychological studies, but are pretty complicated procedures. Singer & Willet offer both a conceptual background and practical ways to do the analyses in a clear, understandable manner. The book is very readable and will be an important reference for future analyses!

very clear and thorough
This book does a particularly good job of explaining the substantive meaning of the equations involved in multilevel modeling analyses.It spends a lot of extra time explaining what the equations mean in real world terms using examples from actual data sets.I teach a graduate level course on HLM and I much prefer this book to the Raudenbush & Byrk book because it not only does a better job of explaining the math (for graduate students less comfortable with statistics) but the chapters are also sprinkled with incredibly useful advice on actually running the analyses (getting them to converge, interpreting them, etc.)The Raudenbush & Bryk book probably does a slightly better job of presenting the equations, but it falls short on explanation and practical advice.If you were only going to buy one HLM book, I would start with this one. ... Essential to understanding biostatistics
I found this book clear, concise, and extremely helpful. I am not a numbers and theory person, but using this book in conjunction with strong classroom lectures helped me to understand the principles and methods tremendously. I see there are some negative reviews posted, but statistical computing can be a difficult process to learn, and I can understand how students might become frustrated if they lack the proper lectures to support this excellent teaching tool. I hope a few rotten classroom experiences will not discourage other customers from buying this book.

Better than most
I like it.I studied statistics and probability in the past, and find this book to be among the easiest to understand.Using this book requires having a basic understanding of the language and symbols of mathematics, as well as, the willingness to learn new mathematical concepts.Generally speaking, these concepts are not easy to learn.Rather than avoid the language of mathematics, it teaches statistics at a basic level.
the "never again" book for biostatistics
Let me just start by saying I really like math, but this book did not help me to learn biostatistics at all.It doesn't explain the issues and equations very well and it has absolutly no answers in the back to check with yours, that's a whole other book...and that only has answers to the odds.Perhaps this would be a decent book for anyone who already has a handle on the subject and wants to learn more, but if this is your first exposure to biostatistics, like me, try another source to learn from, this book makes a difficult subject near impossible. ... Excellent Statistics Book
Intuitive Biostatistics takes a confidence interval approach that should be required reading for all persons interested in statistics. His discussion of basic statistical concepts in the context of interpreting lab test results is clear and informative and introduces the reader to Bayesian concepts that are presented very simply.

Early 90's version- A+
I also have the early 90's version and it is great. All of the recipes are kid-friendly and family-friendly. I can whip up any of these recipes in a hurry or allow my 6 year old or 2 year old help out. I haven't seen the new version with the colors but this one has mormal font and pictures of each recipe. It is like a grown up cookbook but with the kids favorite foods!

Where did they hide the batteries to power the colors???
The classic easy-to-use and pantry-friendly Better Homes and Garden Cookbook is pretty much in every kitchen in America and chances are, it's already in yours too.If so, then then there's nothing in this obnoxiously-colored cookbook for kids that you couldn't find in either the adult BH & H cookbook or a back issue of Family Circle.With a few exceptions, (most notably the breakfast pizza and the Hula Stir Fry) it's all extremly standard fare.The only thing that sets it apart is the crazy fonts and colors so obnoxious that I had to wait ten minutes between reading it and writing this review so I could see straight again.I mean, are you really in need of another chicken nugget recipe?Isn't there anything more interesting they could come up with?And it isn't written to make the cooking any easier for kids--they might as well grab your adult copy and save their vision.

Good research, disjointed storytelling
This book covers a lot of ground and Barry has done some great research.What Barry does not do is maintain a consistently engaging narrative. As others have noted, the book could have used some judicious editing.It probably could have lost 100 pages in my view.

Good content Poor Design
The book is very helpful.The layout does not make for easy reading. The book would be much better with good visuals and less chunky paragraph style writing - the virtues of bullet points especially during pre-exam reading.

Excellent Pathophysiology book
This is an excellent pathophysiology book available in the market. I am right now preparing for my step 2 but I wish I would have used this book for my step 1. I have a decent score on my step 1 and I have taken the exam recently and I think if somebody masters this book they can rock the exam. This book gives excellent information regarding many diseases. I am trying to study this book right now with CMDT, which is also by the same author. Because CMDT is a very concise text book of IM it doesn't explain all the pathophysiology for a disease but this book has all the answers about the pathophysiology of a disease. And I think its a worth buying book for all the medical students, if you study this book little by little during preclinical years it will help you very much understand the IM in the clinical years. I was surprize to find some infornation which I was craving for since few years of my med school. You will even find pathophysilogy of very rare syndromes, as for example I was amazed when I read about X linked Hypophosphatemic rickets. If you are like me who wants to have explanation behind everything, get this book today, you wan't be disappointed.

Review from a polio survivor
As a polio survivor who was caught up in the epidemic of 1952, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who had polio or was involved in the search for a solution.My mother was one of the regional directors for the Mother's March in the 1950's and is now reading the book.It is very well written and pulls no punches highlighting both positive aspects of this decades long effort and the petty politics and personalities that accompanied it.

Polio
I am a survivor of the polio epidemic of the mid forties.This is an excellent account of those days and of the people who ultimately conquered this disease and saved the lives of thousands from its ravages.

Fascinating and informative
Mr. Oshinsky's book is a well written, well researched history of the United States' struggle with poliomyelitis and the race to a vaccine. This book is a page turner, right up there with the most entertaining fiction. Oshinsky's combination of historical accounts and narration style make this book engaging for any lay person. He objectively tells us about Salk and Sabin, the two scientists whose killed- and live-virus vaccines, respectively, changed the natural course of polio and brought it close to eradication. Oshinsky also details the crucial work of many other researchers without whom the polio vaccines would never have existed, and also the important work of the National Foundation that worked tirelessly, raising money and supporting researchers; this organization is now the March of Dimes. I read this book on vacation in Puerto Rico, and I could barely put it down. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in history of vaccines, polio, or just medical innovation. ...
