Your Lifesaver in Fluid & Electrolytes Ocean!
I purchased this book with some doubt, because you see a very high variability in these series. Now, i am very happy. Every medical student and resident gets frustrated with fliuid and electrolytes. Reading textbooks makes it worse. I have seen a lot of attendings and Nephrologists (!!) who are scared of this subject. This book can help you tremendously. It is written in a very simple language and gives you the proper approach to fluid and electrolyte problems. It is full of practical examples that you will see every day and shows you how to solve them. After reading this book, you will be confident enough to deal with electrolytes. Instead of replacing electrolytes blindly with K-Dur and Neutra-Phos and .... and not knowing what to do with Hyponatremia, you will have a nice framework in your brain to deal with them. And the best part: It is a small book. Don't hesitate to get it. You won't regret.

Good but not good enough!
This book does only provide some miner basic understanding of Na, K, and acid base pathophysiology and replacement. Other e-lytes such as magnesium, calcium, phosphor and especially the interaction of those is completely missing. The acid base part is ok for getting a basic understanding of whats going on.
Practically Life savor for both you and patient
I hardly anytime would give "5" stars to any products, but this just blew my doubts and misunderstanding out to pieces. I don't want to sound too explicit, but actually it's better than sex when you understand something and everything come to senses.

Very basic book
This book just goes into the very basics of estimating renal sufficiency. Drugs that should be immediate red flags are glossed over, interactions are ignored, and kidney physiology is ultra-basic.
Needs an Update
As a nephrology fellow I found the concise tabular format in this book very useful and reassuring while beginning my consultation months.I still like the basic idea behind its publication, but am increasingly disappointed.Much of the dosing information is readily available now for free, and it is frequently more accessible on palmbased programs such as epocrates and medscape that avoid the need for carrying multiple pocket references.I would like to see the text regularly updated, go beyond data available in existing palm programs, such as including recommendations/cautions regarding drug combinations for transplant recipients, discuss intraperitoneal dosing for CAPD patients on relevant medications, include critical liver metabolism pathways (i.e. P450 enzymes systems) so interactions with other meds might be better predicted.I would enthusiastically support adding a palmtop version to the appropriately updated text.

A must have for clinicians!

primer on kidney disease
THIS IS AN EXCELLENT BOOK ON NEPHROLOGY, IT'S CONCISE AND VERY WELL ILLUSTRATED, PROBABLY THE BEST INTRODUCTORY BOOK ON NEPHROLOGY, BUT PROBABLY NOT AS COMPREHENSIVE AS THOSE 100 LB BOOKS.

Great text for those interested in nephrology
I am a medicine resident interested in nephrology. This book starts out with the basics of renal anatomy/physiology, approach to patients with kidney disease, and goes on to define/classify, and provide an outline for diagnosis/therapy of common kidney disorders. Its depth suits perfectly medicine residents, and probably, as others have mentioned, fellows starting their training. Those looking for a more in-depth text might consider Johnson&Feehaly's Comprehensive Clinical nephrology.

BURTON ROSE AGAIN IS EXCELLENT
FOR RESIDENT AND FELLOWS AS STAFF TOO, THE FIFTH EDITION OF BURTON ROSE IS EXCELLENT, COVERING BASIC CONCEPTS AS WELL AS ALL THE RECENT RESEARCH MEDICAL NEWS IN FHE FIELDOF FLUID AND ACID BASE PHYSIOLOGY.IT SHOULD BE RECOMENDED FOR PRIVATE AND PUBLIC MEDICAL LIBRARY.

Outstanding text, but consider "The essentials" for a lighter read
No doubt, this is a terrific textbook and is a great resource for Nephrology fellows, ICU fellows and general physiologists.However, for the med student or housestaff who would like to digest the basics of renal electrolyte handling and acid-base homeostasis, I'd like to recommend "Renal Pathophysiology the Essentials" by B.D. Rose and H.G. Rennke (ISBN: 0683073540). It is from 1994 and may lack some of the molecular details, but is an even more "readable" text.

The best in its field
I found this book to be very useful in understanding the subject of acid base and electrolyte disorders. A MUST HAVE for med students
I found renal physiology to be difficult to grasp until I read this book. This book is excellent because the clinical cases and examples are easy to follow. You NEED this book for your renal exam and for the boards. I never understood all of the hypertonic hyponatremia, etc. stuff until I read this book. This book is complete yet easy to read. You won't regret this purchase!

Where have you been?
I am a 48 year old male who has been on hemodialysis for nearly 29 years. I pride myself in the fact that I have always been very much involved in my treatment. Over the years, I have made it a priority in my life to stay abreast of directions the dialysis industry has taken, some good, some not so good.When my docter suggested this book at first I was skeptical. I felt it was going to be another simplisticapproach to being a "good" patient as oppossed to being a knowledgable, proactive patient.
The Bible for Any Dialysis Patient
"The Handbook of Dialysis" is a must have for anyone who is a patient on dialysis or who is the caretaker of someone on dialysis.This book is written with a Nephrologist or Nephrology nurse in mind, but patients and caretakers can learn a great deal as well.It explains the whole dialysis process including reuse, vascular accesses, anticoagulation, nutrition, infections, sleep disorder, etc.The dialysis process affects one's whole system.

A must for any nephrologist in training
This is about the best handbook there is in the field of dialysis. It somehow manages to marry the conciseness and practicality of a handbook that can be carried around in your whitecoat and at the sametime, contains enough information that is usually only found in huge reference texts. Not only does it contain management guidelines in easy to read tables and point form, but also contains a lot more information regarding the basic physiology and scientific evidence if you care to read the appropriate sections. The downside to this is that it appears less readable when you compare it to its main "competitor", the oxford handbook series, but there again, they serve very different needs. For the non-specialist who needs a three second reference, especially someone who works in Britain, I would get the oxford handbook. If you are a nephrologist/dialysis nurse in training, you will inevitably go back to the handbook of dialysis, sooner or later. ... Read more

Renal Physiology Made Easy
Real Physiology provides the basics needed for a medical school renal unit. By purchasing this book, a medical student is able to focus on the renal system in more detail than in some basic physiology texts.

Excellent reference book for training nephrologists
This is an extremely useful book that is an asset for every training nephrologist but also as a reference to anyone involved in Nephrology. Well organised chapters and excellent illustrations. Accompanied by a CD-ROM that carries all the figures that can be used for presentations. I would strongly recommend it.

Fluid & Electrolytes Made Incredibly Easy
Where was this book when I was in undergraduate school? Now that I am teaching nursing I have found it very useful in that it has given me a rare opportunity to present a very complex and hard to understand block ofmaterial is a manner much easier for students to understand. It is packedwith easy to understand pictures, diagrams, and graphs that help teach theconcept in a way that is "reader friendly". The illustrations areunbelievable and a great tool used by the author to present the ideas tothe reader. I have even had requests from the Occupational Therapy facultyat our college to use the book for their lectures as well.. Great Job ! Iwould highly recommend it to anyone, whether a staff nurse or a facultymember at a university or college...
