5-0 out of 5 stars It's great for nursing students!
Being a recent nursing student I have to say I really liked this book. Mary C. Townsend did an excelllent job breaking down the material. It contains nursing diagnosis, chapter summaries, case studies and chapter reviews. It included every aspect of information that made paperwork, careplans, clinical prep-work and studying a bit easier. I would reccomend this book to any nursing student especially if this may be your future field. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Teaching Strategies For Nurse Educators, August 19, 2003
As a future nursing educator I found this book to be indispensable.Over the past fifteen years of my nursing career, I have been in virtually every nursing educational setting. For this reason I have collected numerous books and nursing resources on the subjects of cognitive processes, learning and teaching techniques. This book by far pulls all the information together, and it will become the most utilized of my collection. The information is laid out in a logical format that starts with the basic concepts, theories, objectives and goals of learning. She then moves on to explain how to prepare and conduct classes. She concludes with the testing and evaluation process. DeYoung takes you gradually through everything you need to know to formulate and conduct a classroom setting that is both stimulating and achieves the goal of educating nurses to become critical thinking, problem-solvers. Her work employs the latest research on learning/education and at the end of every chapter she reinforces learning through case studies, critical thinking exercises and ideas for future research. Any nursing educator within the academic setting or within the clinical area would benefit from this text. She has made the material easy to understand for the beginning educator and advanced enough for the expert. I wish I had had this resource at the start of my career.I absolutely recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Parts and Not So Good Parts
Wow, I could've used this one year ago for my first nurse clinical class! This book starts off very promising. It is going to help you grab that elusive thing all teachers want, a class that doesn't put your students in a COMA. The part on learning theory is well explained with examples that pertain to us nurses. There are some basics on the nuts and bolts of instructing a class, again geared towards nursing. Part 2 is where I realize I'm not going to be teacher of the year with this book alone. After switching to patient teaching goals for awhile then we dive into multicultural concepts. I foud the chapter on multiculturalism to be ineffectual and sparse with no real expertise. I wonder why it was included in the book, perhaps it was there to meet an imposed standard. Part 3 is redeeming with some practical and useful ways to turn the learning on in the classroom. This book is useful for a new nurse educator in that she has lots of strategies to choose from with a good base understanding. The experienced instructor caught in the habit of stuffy lecturing can learn new tricks. Overall, this is a good book for beginners and a resource to expand upon. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars concise and practical
Along with Shirley Ottos' Oncology Nursing, the Core Curriculum, with it's concise outline format helped me study for and pass my OCN exam. The 'core' will accompany me on my unit for quick, easy reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Oncology Certification study book
I used this book, and the Study Guide for The Core Curriculum for Oncology Nursing textbook, as well as the OCN 3 exam booklets from ONS, and did really well on the OCN Exam that I took in Washington D.C., April 17, 2002.This book helped me so much on being able to pass that test. It is set up exactly like the OCN Test Blueprint. I would study and work my way through each chapter and then test myself in the study guide book, and then I would test myself on one of the OCN Exam booklets, and then I would go through the book again.

5-0 out of 5 stars You MUST buy this to pass the certification test
Truly this is your bible for passing the National Oncology Certification Test. This and the Q and A study guide and some practice tests directly from ONS were all I used to take the test this fall. All of us at my work place who used these same materials passed. You really don't need anything else. The only problem is the book is presented in an outline form which makes for difficult reading for pleasure's sake alone but good for studying. Also a good reference book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars DRUG HANDBOOK
HAVE BEEN USING THIS BOOK FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS-GENERALLY GOOD, HAVE NOTICED SOME DRUGS MISSING OR DIFFICULT TO CROSS REFERENCE...ALSO LACKING IN "ACTION OF MEDICATION"INFORMATION.

4-0 out of 5 stars Organized presentation, but...
I went to look up Zarontin, and it wasn't in this book (had obscure information under ethosuximide, though). It is a commonly prescribed to control absence seizures. So I'd like to know why this drug wasn't in there. I went to make a suggestion to the publisher, and you have to fill out a questionaire to be a reviewer. I'm not going to go through all that to share a helpful suggestion.
5-0 out of 5 stars Useful, well-organized & well-written; neat CD for patient guidance
As a physician, I used to turn to the PDR for drug guidance, but it seems that only the profitable [ie, proprietary] drugs are listed there. I've often used my RN wife's NDH, recently replaced by the 2006 version. Try to find niacin (for hypercholesterolemia) in the PDR for instance - whereas the NDH has a compact yet thorough description of indications, dosing, adverse effects and fundamentalpharmacology. The little CD enclosed prepares patient information on some 200 common drugs. All told, this is a neat yet compact drug reference guide. Not inexpensive, but highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
This book provides a very easy to read, well-illustrated, and thorough approach to EKG's.I have tried to use other EKG books in the past and found them too superficial & piecemeal or too boring & dense/text-oriented.First of all the book is filled with hundreds of full-page "real EKG's" that are used as the examples for the teaching points. There are also many color digrams.I like how this book gives a nice step-by-step approach, very easy to read.I aslo like how it has different "levels" so that if I want to dive in deeper and learn more subtle/advanced interpretations, it's all right there, with the basic level info next to it for quick review.I like how even this book's "basic/intro" level covered much more practical material than other books...when I first went through it, even after only getting through half of the intro level, I finally understood what is J point, and what atrial enlargement looks like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent 12 Lead ECG Book for All Levels
This is by far the best book for learning and refining 12-lead ECG interpretation skills that I have read. The material is structured so that it can be used as a classroom text or as a self-guided teaching tool.Within the book, Garcia and Holtz divide the material into three clearly marked levels from a basic review of cardiac physiology through an advanced level of ECG interpretation. The text is written in an easy-to-read, conversational style and the graphics and ECG tracings are some of the best I've ever seen in this kind of book. On top of this, Garcia and Holtz have included plenty of useful diagnostic pearls throughout each chapter, making this a highly readable and educational book.I use levels one and two to teach my paramedic students the fundamentals of 12-lead ECG interpretation.I also recommend Garcia and Miller's "Arrhythmia Recognition: The Art of Interpretation" (ISBN 0763722464) as a rhythm interpretation reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent study guide
This book is hands down the best book on EKG interpretation I've ever used.Garcia and Holtz start you from the basics and go no where but up to the top, all the while drilling in the concepts with repeat practice EKGs.This is what makes it extremely practical - you'll be able to put the information you learn to use right away.If you're just starting to learn about EKGs, this book is well worth the cost ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Readable, in-depth discussion of nutrition and metabolism.
Currently, many people are becoming seriously interested in the role of nutrition in human health. Fortunately, there are many good books on nutrition and health for the interested lay person. But once one begins to understand the extreme importance of nutrition for achieving and maintaining good health where can a seriously interested lay person turn for more detailed information? The answer is to this book. Yes, this book requires some serious study, but it is quite well written and does not require a degree in chemistry or biology to follow. A dilligent lay person can gain much valuable information from it. If you are really serious about understanding the role of nutrition in human health I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best advanced nutrition book I know.
If you want (or need) to go deep into nutrition, this is the book. Very well organized and researched information. Covers in depth nutritional physiology and biochemistry. I used this book in an advanced undergraduate nutrition course and I consider it one of my prized possessions. If there is a better book on the subject, I would like to know about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best biochemical nutrition textbook!
I am a graduate student who majors in Nutrition. This is a best biochemical nutrition textbook I ever read! What I like about this textbook is: (1) relatively light weight (575 pages) for this type of textbook, yet very comprehensive. It contains from basic physiology and biochemistry to a current field such as antioxidant nutrition; (2) a large amount of well summarized figures (almost every page has al least one figure); (3) plain English; (4) each chapter concludes with annotated bibliography so that you could use this book as a sort of literature review on a specific field; (5) well-made index, so that you could use this as a sort of encyclopedia of nutrition. Title says "advanced", but I recommend this book to undergraduate students who look for explanation on the biochemistry basis in the nutrition field. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST for all LNCs regardless of business experience
Betty and John Joos have created THE BEST marketing book for Legal Nurse Consultants ever written! The book is an easy read packed with real-life answers to real-life marketing questions. It is a practical approach to what really works, coupled with humor.Unbeknownst to them, they have become my business partners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every LNC should have this book!!
Marketing for the Legal Nurse Consultant is the most valuable book in my library! The Joos' walk LNCs through the world of marketing with ease.I've been lucky enough to have met these fine people in person and attended their marketing seminars. Here again, this is a "must do" for the independent legal nurse consultant. My cards and brochures went through major overhauls with their help and my business has prospered!Thank you both, John and Betty, for all you do!I'm looking forward to purchasing your next edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Answers to your LNC marketing questions
All the accolades that have been written about the Joos' book are true! This little jewel of a book is one I know I will keep referring back to in the years to come. The marketing plan and suggestions are aimed specifically at legal nurses which makes everything in this book usable and practical. "Marketing for the LNC" is an invaluable source of information not only for nurses at the early stages of setting up a new consulting business but also for those that have been at it for awhile and are wanting to expand. Betty writes as one who has an understanding of the fears that most nurses experience who are marketing themselves for the first time. This is one of those "must have" books for "newbies" and seasoned LNC's. It explains what is needed to promote yourself and explains how to effectively do so in a professional manner without spending a small fortune. After reading this book, marketing started to feel like less of a necessary evil; although it's still not my favorite way to spend my non-billable hours....I now have a much clearer idea of the message I want to send to my prospective attorney-clients and I have the tools to help me get my message across. ... First of all, I must say that this is an excellent book to get detailed information when you are in a bind in the OR.But the problem I have with this book is that it is sort of in a no-man's-land of materials. If I need the nitty-gritty on a subject, I go to Barash or Miller, but in the OR, I only need to get to the stuff I seem to have forgotten, so I go to Ezekiel. Mass General falls somewhere between too much information for the OR, and not enough information for home use.I've also found it rather difficult at times to find things with the small, cramped print. (Not to mention that it doesn't fit as easily as Ezekiel in the back pocket of your scrubs)
4-0 out of 5 stars Good for the O.R.
This book seems to be the icon for O.R. pocket references in Anesthesiology.5-0 out of 5 stars Anesthesia from A to Z
"Clinical Anesthesia Procedures of the Massuchussets General Hospital" offers concise yet thorough coverage on all aspects of anesthesia. From preoperative visit to basic airway management, from fluid requirements of the surgical patient to specific considerations on cardiac, respiratory and liver diseases, this book has it all in an easily accesible way, especially when your above the "blood-brain barrier".I would especially recomend the chapter on resuscitation of trauma and burns victims, because of the thorough coverage of the subject, better than in many surgical textbooks I have read. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Worthless
One word-Worthless!!!!!!This book is about a lot of people's different theories on the nursing home industry, uses terms that my administrator had never even heard of, and basically, just makes no sense at all!And to boot, it cost me $50 with shipping.Do not waste your time even thinking about buying it...

2-0 out of 5 stars Good but not great.
Def. better than nothing but be sure to study everything and not just this book and the green administrators licensure book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Much better than the green text book
A valuable study guide indeed.I passed the NAB exam a few weeks ago....and this book was a huge help.......a wise investment. Also, for what it's worth.......I had a'lot of experience in LTC (Assistant Activity Director, etc.)....I was also a State Nursing Home surveyor for 4.5 years before starting my AIT........listen up: the NAB is the hardest exam I've ever taken in my entire life! It's the kind of test that'll bring you to tears......trust me on this......study like you've never studied before in your life!! ... Read more
