5-0 out of 5 stars Your Lifesaver in Fluid & Electrolytes Ocean!
I purchased this book with some doubt, because you see a very high variability in these series. Now, i am very happy. Every medical student and resident gets frustrated with fliuid and electrolytes. Reading textbooks makes it worse. I have seen a lot of attendings and Nephrologists (!!) who are scared of this subject. This book can help you tremendously. It is written in a very simple language and gives you the proper approach to fluid and electrolyte problems. It is full of practical examples that you will see every day and shows you how to solve them. After reading this book, you will be confident enough to deal with electrolytes. Instead of replacing electrolytes blindly with K-Dur and Neutra-Phos and .... and not knowing what to do with Hyponatremia, you will have a nice framework in your brain to deal with them. And the best part: It is a small book. Don't hesitate to get it. You won't regret.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good but not good enough!
This book does only provide some miner basic understanding of Na, K, and acid base pathophysiology and replacement. Other e-lytes such as magnesium, calcium, phosphor and especially the interaction of those is completely missing. The acid base part is ok for getting a basic understanding of whats going on.
5-0 out of 5 stars Practically Life savor for both you and patient
I hardly anytime would give "5" stars to any products, but this just blew my doubts and misunderstanding out to pieces. I don't want to sound too explicit, but actually it's better than sex when you understand something and everything come to senses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Med/Surg Nursing
We utilize this book as a resource on our Med/Surg Unit.It provides step by step instruction for our new hires & a thorough review for those who haven't performed a procedure/care ina long time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but boring and annoying
This book explains step by step the procedures; however, it takes too long (pages and pages) to explain something simple, and that annoys me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
This book is mainly for 1st semester nursing, although is can be used as a refresher throughout nursing. There are topics on reducing anxiety, developing confidence in your test-taking abilities, time management, how to study more effectively, and problem solving. It contains over 700 mulitple choice questions and 3 practice tests-- all with rationales for correct and incorrect answers.I didn't start using this book as a sort of pre-test study guide until late in my 1st semester; but once I started using it, I was surprised at what I did know, and the ones I didn't made sense after reading the rationales. The sections go along with the different the different topics taught in 1st semester, (ex.- Hygiene, Elimination Needs, Administration of Medications, etc...)If used as a pre-test study guide along with other material, this book can be a great asset for test taking success, and help to build confidence in the knowledge learned.
3-0 out of 5 stars Proceed with caution. . . .
For a lot of nursing students this book may be helpful, however I really recommend reading it before you get into school because I have seen too many of my fellow classmates hitting this (and other study aides) rather than focusing on their textbooks and subsequently flunking out of nursing school. There are some good pointers here but any book that focuses on trying to teach "how to take a test" needs to be approached with caution. Critical thinking skills (as you may know) are important in nursing, however, as a former educator that decided to attend nursing school later in life, I can honestly say that you don't pick up those skills simply by reading a book on the topic, it takes time (years, not days) to learn how to think like a nurse. I once sat down with a group of my fellow nursing students, the ones making A's on just about everything and I asked them what they were doing to make such great grades. . . Their answer: sticking to the textbook and lecture notes and approaching the material in different modes of thought. They never used any study aides, no CD's, no practice exams. etc. I would recommend trying the same thing, especially during your foundation class. Stick with the textbook. When you come upon something that is hard to comprehend go to the library and read the same material from a different textbook. I've found some textbooks are far superior to others in explaining the material. Next, go to your professor and discuss the material one on one. I suppose the main thing I need to say is just be careful with any type of study aide because it may actually distract you from the main content. Most study aides simplify the material way too much and that is going to do you absolutely no good in nursing school.

3-0 out of 5 stars Professor thought all wrong!
Although my professor thought most of the information in the textbook was wrong, it was a great guide to use both online and in class.Great illustrations!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Recommended
I bought this book for my Anatomy and Physiology 1 class in college. It was the required book for the class and the first semester we were using it. Upon going through we found numerous problems with information in the book. For example, there is an illustration of a reflex on page 419 and the foot is on backwards (according to the direction of the spinal cord). This is only one of many, many small problems with the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good primary care office resource
Our busy office found this book an excellent resource. We hardly had to change the protocols much at all, only to update a few to reflect some changes in medications we use.The author has taken great pain to design a resource that saved us a great deal of time....I had started to do some of these for our office by myself BEFORE I came across this book and am embarrassed to admit the few protocols I managed to plod through were amateurish indeed compared to Ms. Briggs's work herein. Our office is a busy internal medicine practice with a heavy dose of geriatrics and we give this a "strong buy!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
If the armed forces uses it and bases their clinical practice guidelines on it, it's got to be good, right? It is. I use this book in nurse telephone triage for a military pediatric clinic with 2700 patients. The book is spiral bound and easy to flip pages, and the pages stay open to the topic you are using. Topics are alphabetized which saves time when searching for a certain topic. There is a very useful table of contents at the front. The home care instructions are straight forward and acceptable to our parents. It doesn't have all the topics you would need (that's what pediatricians are for), but tab topics you use most, add a drug book and a pediatrician, and you're ready to go.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive/user freindly telephone triage book.
When it came time to select a book to use as a guideline for triage assessment, I searched through 15 books and a couple of computerized systems. This book is the easiest to follow, without being too simplistic. The format is exceptional and key questions are clear, concise and stillopen-ended enough to prevent "leading" your patient. There arecross-references for each complaint, as well as home care measures for eachailment. The final points are the blank formatted pages for writing yourown protocols, and tracking charts to complete QA.5 stars hardly seemenough! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Offensive, 'blame the victim' tripe
So ... I now learn that the infertility problems I had for many years, which I always thought were due to polycystic ovaries and failure to ovulate were ACTUALLY due to the fact that I hate my husband, didn't want to have children with him or was simply ambivilent about motherhood.

2-0 out of 5 stars Bias Was Off-Putting
Dr. Northrup provides women with practical information about their bodies, stages of life and medical procedures. However, I was appalled by her bias against Western cultural heritage and Christianity. Her views on those topics were extremely unbalanced, with no acknowledgement of their positive contributions to culture and women. As a Catholic whose best teachers were strong-minded, compassionate religious sisters, I felt offended by her slur against nuns.I am aware that not everyone feels the same way about their religious upbringing, but I would expect an academic to strive for some balance in their research. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I was fortunate enough to be a student of Linda Swaynes @ UNC Charlotte. We were the first class to use this book. Not only was Ms. Swayne excellent at what she taught but the book was a tool that explained the theories in nice detail.I continue to use the book as a resource.I am currently a hospital CEO.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great balance of theory and practice
I used this text for a class in health care management. I was impressed by the readability of the text, the incredible amount of information it contained, and the great balance of theory with practical approaches. Many books about management are a bit short in the area of practical tools. This one gives you tools to work with. I used the outline of this book to do a strategic analysis of an organization with which I work. The only significant weakness of the book is the uneven quality of the case studies. These were contributed by outside authors. Some of these are terrific, others are not well written and not so helpful. Hope this gets corrected in the new edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for the Novice Planner
This comprehensive and yet easily understood text provides thefundamentals of strategic management as it applies to most any health careorganization. The authors' experience comes to life in a variety of realexamples and cases throughout the text. My background and interest instrategic planning led me to thoroughly examine the step-by-step processes, and I was amazed at both the simplicity and applicability of each. Definetly a text that I will recommend to anyone entering the healthcareindustry or strategic planning arenas. Not only was I benefited by thepurchase of this text, but had the opportunity to meet these outstandingauthors in person during graduate study/research. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Toprehabilitation book on the market
As a Licensed acupuncturist focusing on muskuloskeletal pain, I am always looking for pragmatic, integrative data to increase the wellbeing of my patients and their resiliency to injury. Dr. Liebenson did an excellent job in combining top of the line clinical pearls that are ready to melt into one's practice essentially the next day. The DVD is great in adding visual cues to enhance the learning experience acquired throughout the textbook. Excellent work.
5-0 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL TEXT FOR ALL SPINAL CARE PRACTIONERS
One of the remarkable aspects of this text, and there are many, is that Dr. Liebenson has added so grandly to his original book.New and re-written chapters reflect the continued evolution of the current biopsychosocial model of lower back pain.New authors havebeen added and contribute further depth to this updated gem.
5-0 out of 5 stars Integrated Approach to Low Back Pain blending Research and Practice
This is one of the most comprehensive texts for rehabilitation of the spine I have seen in over 10 years of practice. As a physical therapist, I've learned that spine rehabilitation requires a broad knowledge of techniques, since every spine patient is different. The modern practitioner needs to have an ecelctic approach to rehabilitation since no 2 patients are alike, even with the same diagnosis.Dr. Liebenson has done a great job in providing the scientific and clinical application of a variety of spine rehabilitation principles with a multidisciplinary approach including a virtual "who's who" of physicians, chiropractors, physical therapists, and researchers from around the world.Of particular interest to me is the Czech approach to spinal rehabilitation based on contributions from legendary physicians Vladimir Janda and Karel Lewit.Top researchers including Bogduk, McGill, and Hodges also present the latest evidence-based interventions.I was quite pleased to see the amount of photographs and diagrams illustrating specific techniques and exercises, which is even further enhanced with videos on the enclosed DVD. Long gone (I hope) are the days of "hot packs, ultrasound and massage" as the treatment of choice for low back pain. We know that exercise is the most important component in back rehabilitation, but we must first be able to accurately assess the patient and prepare the tissues for exercise programs specific to the patient needs and goals. Dr. Liebenson and his contributors have given us the tools do do just that... they have captured a virtual paradigm shift in the way we approach the assessment and rehabilitation of the spine.I highly recommend this textbook for any healthcare professional treating spine patients. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars only review book you must have!
I began my 6 week summer o/b class 10 days after giving birth to my baby girl. Of course a newborn takes up a lot of time, and fortunately someone recomended me this book. This book is so excellent that I hardly read my lecture book. Everything you need to know is clearly explained and straight to the point. If it wasn't for this book I might not have passed my course. I was nursing my baby with one arm, and the other holding this book and reading. I read and read... and I passed my class. A++ book

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Study Guide book for success in nursing!
I can't imagine a more helpful study guide.Full of NCLEX test questions, their answers, and an explanation of WHY it is the correct answer (in the back of the book) plus succinct yet complete outlines of the chapters and more; this is a book for students who want to learn the nursing material as quickly and asthoroughly as possible. Truly a gem of a book. Great for study/review the night before the test. I found this especially helpful with my study of Fluid, Electrolyte and Acid-Base Balance which is one of the more difficult concepts for me and many others to grasp.Use it along with the textbook, CD-ROM and companion websites for greater learning.Any time you spend in this book is time well-spent.A well-kept secret aid are the study guides to nursing textbooks which, at many schools, are "optional" to purchase, but trust me, they are mandatory for your learning! Good luck future nurses!
5-0 out of 5 stars Works for Me, too!!!
I used the updated version of this book, and my goodness, it was worth the time.I could not put it down...it is rare that anyone can be excited about reading a textbook, but that is my feeling!

5-0 out of 5 stars Worked for me!!
Although this book can seem a bit daunting at first (I mean, it's over 1600 pages!) it is a wonderful book to have.It was required for my first semester in nursing school and I found myself using it even then to write care plans and find rationales and now that I'm in the med-surg semester I use it even more to refer to pathophysiology of patients conditions, look for tips on what to watch for in every patient that could indicate possible complications, etc. It includes a brief overview of the anatomy & physiology of the following body system and also gives an detailed, indepth step-by-step"how to" for assessments of a patient, including abnormal findings. It's a great tool to have at your fingertips to make you more aware of what to look for in your patients. ...
