3-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps, the book is not horrible and it is just my class
This book tries so hard to make social and cultural variances seem like scientific fact. Of course, a nursing text should discuss patient care but not as always black and white; it edges on stereotyping at times. Conversely, if physiology is mentioned, the science behind the concept is often ignored. I think this book is based on pseudo-science at times.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good soruce of information
This book provides good explanations for the various processes and procedures of nursing. I really like the additional material such as the CD and the website.

4-0 out of 5 stars Could it Get Any Better!
I am a doctor now, but i used this book when i was a medical student and i thought it was great.
5-0 out of 5 stars Better than any other anatomy coloring book i've seen
I looked at a number of similar coloring books, and this one was by far the most detailed and info-packed.I'm halfway through it now (i'm coloring everything in order), and i'm still finding the book thouroughly enjoyable and educational. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars There are some nice features of this book, but....
Chapter outlines would improve this book, rather than just objectives listed in the beginning of each chapter. Sometimes in the headings, subheadings, you get lost on to where you were going with all of it. Great key concepts in the back, it would also be nice if there was a glossary in the back.
5-0 out of 5 stars Epitomizes basic nursing
I'm surprised by others' negative reviews. My friends and I think this is the best text book on basic nursing ever published. It covers everything one could want to know for basic nursing, including exact procedures for injections, IV's, surgical procedure, etc. It encompasses nursing history, ethics, laws, develpment, everything! Our nursing program doesn't go in the order of their chapters, so we just go to the chapter that applies. I use it for every class I have, whether or not it's an "assigned" text book. You could read it and literally have all the basic skills needed to be a beginning nurse. Um...did I mention I love this book?

1-0 out of 5 stars Awful textbook

5-0 out of 5 stars great reference
I am a LPN Staff Development Coordinator for a Subacute LTC facility. Although the title is RNotes, I use this book freqently. It is a good clinical reference for myself and my staff. I felt this would cover more information then the LPNotes, therefore it is the reason for my purchase. It would be great for nursing students, clinical nurses or for Staff Development Coordinators who are suposed to know everything! Enjoy

5-0 out of 5 stars The Second Edition Is Now Available
This is an updated review for Rnotes 2nd Edition. I had previously posted a review for the 1st Edition, and somehow it ended up in the 2nd Edition's review section as well. Nonetheless, here's what you'll find inside the new edition that you wont find in the first edition (copied straight from FA Davis' website):
5-0 out of 5 stars essential for first year nursing
This flipbook is perfect for first year nurses because it presents valuable information in a easy to flip, erasable pad. The book has everything from lab values, CPR techniques, assessment data, insulin regimens, tables of meds that counteract each other, and I/O figures for measurement. I used this book a lot for labs during nursing school and liked flipping through to remember basics that would slip my mind. Its a great present for any nursing student or first year graduate. The book includes all ages from babies to the elderly, and presents infomation for all types of nursing. Its a great book also because pen marks wipe away by rubbing it off with alcohol (which is in every RN's pocket). The Rnotes also have other makes that are more specific but this is great because it encompasses a wide range of topics. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Your Lifesaver in Fluid & Electrolytes Ocean!
I purchased this book with some doubt, because you see a very high variability in these series. Now, i am very happy. Every medical student and resident gets frustrated with fliuid and electrolytes. Reading textbooks makes it worse. I have seen a lot of attendings and Nephrologists (!!) who are scared of this subject. This book can help you tremendously. It is written in a very simple language and gives you the proper approach to fluid and electrolyte problems. It is full of practical examples that you will see every day and shows you how to solve them. After reading this book, you will be confident enough to deal with electrolytes. Instead of replacing electrolytes blindly with K-Dur and Neutra-Phos and .... and not knowing what to do with Hyponatremia, you will have a nice framework in your brain to deal with them. And the best part: It is a small book. Don't hesitate to get it. You won't regret.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good but not good enough!
This book does only provide some miner basic understanding of Na, K, and acid base pathophysiology and replacement. Other e-lytes such as magnesium, calcium, phosphor and especially the interaction of those is completely missing. The acid base part is ok for getting a basic understanding of whats going on.
5-0 out of 5 stars Practically Life savor for both you and patient
I hardly anytime would give "5" stars to any products, but this just blew my doubts and misunderstanding out to pieces. I don't want to sound too explicit, but actually it's better than sex when you understand something and everything come to senses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
This book is mainly for 1st semester nursing, although is can be used as a refresher throughout nursing. There are topics on reducing anxiety, developing confidence in your test-taking abilities, time management, how to study more effectively, and problem solving. It contains over 700 mulitple choice questions and 3 practice tests-- all with rationales for correct and incorrect answers.I didn't start using this book as a sort of pre-test study guide until late in my 1st semester; but once I started using it, I was surprised at what I did know, and the ones I didn't made sense after reading the rationales. The sections go along with the different the different topics taught in 1st semester, (ex.- Hygiene, Elimination Needs, Administration of Medications, etc...)If used as a pre-test study guide along with other material, this book can be a great asset for test taking success, and help to build confidence in the knowledge learned.
3-0 out of 5 stars Proceed with caution. . . .
For a lot of nursing students this book may be helpful, however I really recommend reading it before you get into school because I have seen too many of my fellow classmates hitting this (and other study aides) rather than focusing on their textbooks and subsequently flunking out of nursing school. There are some good pointers here but any book that focuses on trying to teach "how to take a test" needs to be approached with caution. Critical thinking skills (as you may know) are important in nursing, however, as a former educator that decided to attend nursing school later in life, I can honestly say that you don't pick up those skills simply by reading a book on the topic, it takes time (years, not days) to learn how to think like a nurse. I once sat down with a group of my fellow nursing students, the ones making A's on just about everything and I asked them what they were doing to make such great grades. . . Their answer: sticking to the textbook and lecture notes and approaching the material in different modes of thought. They never used any study aides, no CD's, no practice exams. etc. I would recommend trying the same thing, especially during your foundation class. Stick with the textbook. When you come upon something that is hard to comprehend go to the library and read the same material from a different textbook. I've found some textbooks are far superior to others in explaining the material. Next, go to your professor and discuss the material one on one. I suppose the main thing I need to say is just be careful with any type of study aide because it may actually distract you from the main content. Most study aides simplify the material way too much and that is going to do you absolutely no good in nursing school.

3-0 out of 5 stars Professor thought all wrong!
Although my professor thought most of the information in the textbook was wrong, it was a great guide to use both online and in class.Great illustrations!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Recommended
I bought this book for my Anatomy and Physiology 1 class in college. It was the required book for the class and the first semester we were using it. Upon going through we found numerous problems with information in the book. For example, there is an illustration of a reflex on page 419 and the foot is on backwards (according to the direction of the spinal cord). This is only one of many, many small problems with the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Study Guide book for success in nursing!
I can't imagine a more helpful study guide.Full of NCLEX test questions, their answers, and an explanation of WHY it is the correct answer (in the back of the book) plus succinct yet complete outlines of the chapters and more; this is a book for students who want to learn the nursing material as quickly and asthoroughly as possible. Truly a gem of a book. Great for study/review the night before the test. I found this especially helpful with my study of Fluid, Electrolyte and Acid-Base Balance which is one of the more difficult concepts for me and many others to grasp.Use it along with the textbook, CD-ROM and companion websites for greater learning.Any time you spend in this book is time well-spent.A well-kept secret aid are the study guides to nursing textbooks which, at many schools, are "optional" to purchase, but trust me, they are mandatory for your learning! Good luck future nurses!

5-0 out of 5 stars Worked for me!!
Although this book can seem a bit daunting at first (I mean, it's over 1600 pages!) it is a wonderful book to have.It was required for my first semester in nursing school and I found myself using it even then to write care plans and find rationales and now that I'm in the med-surg semester I use it even more to refer to pathophysiology of patients conditions, look for tips on what to watch for in every patient that could indicate possible complications, etc. It includes a brief overview of the anatomy & physiology of the following body system and also gives an detailed, indepth step-by-step"how to" for assessments of a patient, including abnormal findings. It's a great tool to have at your fingertips to make you more aware of what to look for in your patients. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Family Nursing Research
Required text for a family dynamics course I took.Excellent, informative and easy to read.Good text to have.

2-0 out of 5 stars So-So Text
As an RN with 28 years experience, I was disappointed with the quality of Ms. Friedman's writing. She is overly repetitive with descriptive materials, tends to ramble on, uses slang terms occassionally, and reveals personal bias. There is no place in nursing for unprofessional terms or bias against groups based on religious differences or lack of religious orientation.Positive qualities of this book include adaptation stategies for use in applying nursing theories to families and making appropriate NANDA diagnoses. The Friedman Model is included and well illustrated. Several tables are included and are helpful to clarify wordy text.

1-0 out of 5 stars Drink More Coffee!
I am a fourth year BSN student. This book was our assigned text for our family class. I felt the book was to wordy on explanations. Points were not clearly established. They were merely tossed around comparing and contrasting one research study versus another. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
This book takes electrophysiology and breaks it down into manageable bites. I first bought this book when I took ACLS as a new grad and was scared to death of having to differentiate between Mobitz 1 and 2, etc...I also like using it with patients for the illustrations when trying to explain what "those strange blips on the monitor" mean.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not "Incredibly Easy"!!
While this book advertises that it will make ECG interpretation "easy", it does provide the proper graphics to make this possible. The first few chapters of the book are accessible and the end of chapter quizzes are helpful. However, once you get to Chapter 3"Interpreting a Rhythm Strip", the strips are impossible to interpret due the small size of the strips! You need to be able to count the boxes to interpret the rhythms and this is virtually impossible, unless you have a large magnifying glass!I thought this might be one occurrence in the book, but it is throughout, making interpretation of strips near impossible! As a novice ECG person, this is not something that I would have looked for before purchasing the book.Other ECG interpretation books have much better graphics of the strips, making interpretation (while still not "easy") doable, and not frustrating!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for nurses or for any interested layperson
This book gives you a good introduction to pathophysiology without being very technical. Even if you are not a medical professional, you will still grasp the concepts because the author gives simple but adequate definition of the disease and its underlying causes. I am a career switcher (switched to RN) and this book worked for me.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not that great
This book seems to be helpful if you are searching for really specific diagnoses, but not for just a broad range. For example, risk for impaired skin integrity is due to chemotherapy. It is very specific in each category, and makes it impossible to use for a regular patient care plan. This was partly my fault because i did not read into it a lot before purchasing (bought in the store). I am hoping that I can return it and get a general care plan book, that is not so specific in the related to and evidenced by parts. This one would probably come in handy when I am in specialties phase this summer, however I am in an accelerated LPN program, and our specialties are short in length, so it is a waste of money. I do agree with a previous review that the book is not very well organized either.

1-0 out of 5 stars absolutely awful
This book is a required book at my nursing school, otherwise I would be selling it now in the used book section. I have wasted sooo much time searching for things in this book. The organization is pitiful. It is organized by system, then disease process, so all of the nursing diagnosis are specifically related to disease(good luck if the disease isn't in the book). I would not recommend this book to anyone, I have since spent lots of time and additional money trying to find a good care plan book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I reviewed 4 different Nursing care plan books; overall, this one is the best and clearest.I would highly recommend this one over others. It is the only one that clearly articulates, NUMERICALLY, what a nursing goal should aim to achieve so you can actually MEASURE if your interventions were successful. Oh..and it really is easy to read. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Better Choices Available
This author has some good insights contained in the Author's Notes at the beginning of each nursing diagnosis. In her Notes she explains the differences between diagnoses that seem almost identical. But you can get the same insights in her smaller, more concise Handbook of Nursing Diagnosis, without the expense and inconvenience of the full-blown, padded-out version. Also, the smaller Handbook should not be your first care planning book.Instead, it's a valuable supplement that will help refine your understanding of the topic.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste-O-Money
Bought this book as it was 'required' for nursing courses.I suspect this is the only reason this book is ever even purchased, because it IS NOT HELPFUL!Never seen such a convoluted resource, this was the WORST.IMO, Carpenito is obviously riding on her laurels from past publications. If you are a beginning nursing student that is attempting to make heads or tails of care planning, save yourself the agony now.THUMBS DOWN!

2-0 out of 5 stars Thereis a better choice!
I bought this book thinking it would be a bigger and better version of the spiral bound Handbook of Nursing Diagnosis. It really isn't!I feel that this book is hard to navigate through and never use it!I paid 45ish dollars for this book and think it was a HUGE WASTE OF MONEY.I do, on the other hand, LOVE the SPIRAL BOUND HANDBOOK OF NURSING DIAGNOSIS by the same author Carpenito-Moyet.I have discussed this topic with many of my classmates who also have these books and eveyone of my classmates have agreed. ...
