It's not a great book
I had this book for my community health textbook. Comparing with other textbook, this book is really hard to understand. The author is trying hard enough to sound like a great researcher using jargons and difficult words to impress the public. As a student nurse, I would be much happier with a textbook that explains everything in laymans term. It's hard enough for us to understand the concept without those fancy words. A note for the authors, we like simple textbook not a complicated one. A complicated book is not necessarily a good book. In my opinion other textbooks are way better than this one. ... Read more

Quickly settles disputes, answers questions, a "MUST" for all home care nurses & their management teams !!!!
I have the 4th edition (at this time is the most recent edition in print) and as a psych home care nurse, this little, portable wealth of knowledge has helped me validate to management, as well as to public health and other surveyors, the range in situations that qualify "homebound status" for psychiatric patients.Throughout the book there are samples provided to support a variety of situations that help the nurse better understand, and therefore more accurately report, on each sector of the OASIS forms.Medicare regulations are explained in detail, and I learned information that I had not known in the 14 years I have been doing mental health home care nursing.The manual provides a history and background of homecare, its evolution, provides an overview of documentaion, including the importance of coding, and its significance in home care.Also, valuable tips on improving the nursing visit, setting achievable goals, managing the case, and the guidelines for care for all the home care disciplines, are provided, so the nurse can be knowledgable regarding the roles of the other disciplines.There is a great resource section at the end of the book, and home care definitions, roles, and abbreviations are delineated in this manual as well.All home care codes are listed.

Family Nursing Research
Required text for a family dynamics course I took.Excellent, informative and easy to read.Good text to have.

So-So Text
As an RN with 28 years experience, I was disappointed with the quality of Ms. Friedman's writing. She is overly repetitive with descriptive materials, tends to ramble on, uses slang terms occassionally, and reveals personal bias.There is no place in nursing for unprofessional terms or bias against groups based on religious differences or lack of religious orientation.Positive qualities of this book include adaptation stategies for use in applying nursing theories to families and making appropriate NANDA diagnoses.The Friedman Model is included and well illustrated. Several tables are included and are helpful to clarify wordy text.

Drink More Coffee!
I am a fourth year BSN student.This book was our assigned text for our family class. I felt the book was to wordy on explanations. Points were not clearly established. They were merely tossed around comparing and contrasting one research study versus another. Honest appreciation for caregivers
This book reaches out to those who carry the heavy burdens of caregiving and offers them small, daily gifts of understanding, appreciation and compassion. Caregivers often feel overburdened and unappreciated. Wonderful book
By giving you an understanding of how the person with alzheimers views their world, this book helps the caregiver make life a little easier, happier, and more meaningful. It also reduces the stress and frustration of the caregiver because you gain knowledge of how to handle situations that before were a struggle.

Excellent for anyone touched by dementia
Jolene Brackey spoke at the nursing home where I work with patients with dementia. She is an incredible speaker and author. This book has so many wonderful ideas for nursing home workers and people who have loved ones with dementia. It is very reader-friendly and easy to understand. Jolene includes many real life examples to illustrate her ideas. She has a sense of humor and a sense of compassion that radiates with every chapter. I've used her ideas and had amazing success in my job. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how to appreciate people with dementia. ... Read more

Excellent or Flawed? - Depends on your perspective
It's a bit unusual for me to agree with customer reviews that both praise and criticize a book, but in this case I do. On the one hand, Rollnick et al, have done an amazing job of applying motivational interviewing and stages of change theory to the short interchanges common with patients in a medical setting. For those readers already well-versed in stages of change, this is an excellent and thought-provoking approach. I believe many "counselors" of various stripes would benefit from the applications advocated in this book.
not that great, not much "guide"ance
This book gave helpful perspectives regarding doctor-patient communication, but was not very enlightening. The problem might be that it was written from the perspective that the doctor is always correct, and the patient is always some poor sap who needs to be enlightened and trained as you would a child. I don't see this book awakening the human within some budding physician and transforming the physician into some effective communicator. The worst part was how many pages it took to convey helpful information.
