5-0 out of 5 stars A must read
I have always found Varney to be useful and easy to read, especially in comparison to Speroff or Gabbe.I think that this book was never intended to be the definitive text on home birth. If a midwife's interest lies in homebirth, seek out books that cater to that option.I found the skills sections especially helpful. It isn't Varney's job to unite midwives, her primary job is to educate. You can not teach the spirit of midwife through a book, that's where mentoring comes into play. This is certainly a must have for all practicing midwives, regardless of educational background.

2-0 out of 5 stars Technically accurate, boring read
I am impressed by Varney's vast knowledge of hospital procedures as they relate to midwifery care. However, I found this to be "textbook" as a very boring read. Her information did not really cover the practice outside the hospital setting as thoroughly as would be needed for someone praticing in that setting. Her information would be most appreciated by the CNM and the L&D nurse - a great resource for them.

3-0 out of 5 stars This is a good reference book, but not the best for homebirt
This book is a good reference book, but not the best one for homebirth midwives. Myle's, and Anne' Frye's books I have found to be more applicable in my practice. To the above person that thinks that Circumsision should not be addresses, I could not disagree more. Circumsision is a subject that should be addressed prenatally, and Since midwives are supposed to provide basic Post-partum care to the mother and baby during the first six weeks It is essentual that midwives and parents are educated about the issue antapartum ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Offensive, 'blame the victim' tripe
So ... I now learn that the infertility problems I had for many years, which I always thought were due to polycystic ovaries and failure to ovulate were ACTUALLY due to the fact that I hate my husband, didn't want to have children with him or was simply ambivilent about motherhood.
5-0 out of 5 stars Original Cover
I absolutly love this book. The one thing I have to say against it though is the new cover.I think they should replush another version of it with the original cover.I would make it less clincal feeling

2-0 out of 5 stars Bias Was Off-Putting
Dr. Northrup provides women with practical information about their bodies, stages of life and medical procedures. However, I was appalled by her bias against Western cultural heritage and Christianity. Her views on those topics were extremely unbalanced, with no acknowledgement of their positive contributions to culture and women. As a Catholic whose best teachers were strong-minded, compassionate religious sisters, I felt offended by her slur against nuns.I am aware that not everyone feels the same way about their religious upbringing, but I would expect an academic to strive for some balance in their research. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars only review book you must have!
I began my 6 week summer o/b class 10 days after giving birth to my baby girl. Of course a newborn takes up a lot of time, and fortunately someone recomended me this book. This book is so excellent that I hardly read my lecture book. Everything you need to know is clearly explained and straight to the point. If it wasn't for this book I might not have passed my course. I was nursing my baby with one arm, and the other holding this book and reading. I read and read... and I passed my class. A++ book

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Great review book. I think it's a must for any student in mataernity nursing. This book gives you the 'meat and potatoes' of what you need to know.Very thorough.Good in depth descriptions on rationales.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book for OB nursing class
I used this book last semester for OB nursing class, it helped me understand basic concepts andput together nursing care plan greatly. It's very concise and well written.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
The new edition of the AWHONN Core Curriculum for Maternal Newborn Nursing is excellent. It allows the staff on the units to have the latest information on clinical practice, guidelines for care, and patienteducation. The only thing more would be to have an appendix of commonOB/Newborn procedures and protocols/guidelines and much of the annualhospital activities revolving around the hospital manuals could be greatlyeased. We have tabbed the Clinical Practice segments for easy reference onthe units.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good but with no pictures
The unique "no" of this book is no having pictures. But it's very easy to read and schematic. I use it to prepare my nursing classes and is one of my favorites. ... Read more

Excellent Photographs - I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the process that takes place from conception to birth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous photos!
The pictures in this book are wonderful and it is not only fun for expecting parents, but also for sharing with your children once they start to ask questions about what happens inside mom when a baby is in there!

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Pictures!!
I was given this book as a gift after I found out I was pregnant. The pictures were awesome and the information very useful. My only disapointment is that 3/4 of the book is dedicated to the first 12 weeks.(I didn't receive it until I was 14 weeks) It is still amazing to see what my baby looked like as it was developing, but I wish the later months were more in depth. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars This book is great!
This book is an excellent tool for Maternal Child.I highly recommend it.It is well organized and well written.I didn't feel the need to use outside sources to supplement my information. It was all right there. The case studies and the Care Plans help to bring the abstract into focus.I really enjoyed this book.
1-0 out of 5 stars Hate this book
Have you ever needed to look up a word for extra clarification, flipped back to the glossary and found what you were looking for? Can't do that with this book - no glossary.Have you ever read textbooks that had bolded words to make them easier to find?McKinney never did. They italisized their words making them HARDER to find. It's the wordiest book I've ever read and I have 3 degrees. It's overpriced and should be banned from college bookstores.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand, terrific illustrations/pictures
This is a reference book I come back to again and again. The text is written in a no-nonsense straight forward manner. The technical terms are all defined in an easy to use glossary at the beginning of each chapter. This book describes every treatment step in detail in easy to understand language. Its the first book I turn to when dealing with matern-child treatment. ... This is the best book we've had in my RN, BSN program so far.The content is very easy to read. The sentences are kept short and to the point. The content is repeated over and over in different places in the chapters aswell as throughout the book, making it easier to remember the main points. 5-0 out of 5 stars Should be required for anyone in a perinatal program
This is a book that covers just a little bit of everything in perinatal education. It has non-biased information, solid references, and an easy-to-read format.4-0 out of 5 stars Very mainstream but worthwhile
While I am not a "mainstream" childbirth educator, there are many aspects of this book that I have found myself referring back to during my teaching career. It was very helpful in learning about the adult learnerand thier particular physical, emotional , sociocultural and cognitiveneeds. The chapter on the "the basis of relaxation" was veryinteresting as it helped me understand the history of using relaxation inchildbirth and the different philosphies behind each technique. Biofeedback, therapeutic touch and acupressure were presented in anextremely informative manner. The basics of the childbirth educationbusiness arepresented( something that can be overlooked in most teacherspassion for their "Cause"). A very mainstreamm textbook that canbe of great value to both hospital and independent educators alike. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible
Having had to read this cover to cover, and then pass the NCLEX, I can only say....don't use this as a reference. Please, if this book is assigned to you, get another maternity review book to study for the boards! This book was full of errors, and impossible to navigate!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a reliable source for clinicals or for L&D
I have these study guides that I need to complete using this book--I cannot find anything in here! First the information is very incorrect--It is very unorganized--in the labor process it goes from positions of the fetus--the delivery--and then to the stages of labor--should the stages go before the acutal delivery?? The glossary sucks! I was trying to find the most general term;CVA tenderness; postpartum H&H; just some lab values for the mom after the delivery and nothing! But when I went into the chapter for postpartum it was there in one sentence I had to search for hours to find anything in here! Terrible book- dont keep for future reference! I am sure not going to! The only good thing is that there are nursing diagnosis for every step; from pregnancy; l&D; postpartum; family life; peds, I can only hope that these will help me- there are interventions and nursing duties too-
1-0 out of 5 stars filled with errors
This book is filled with errors. The very first week I had it in class, I noticed several just in the genetics chapter alone! I was hoping to have an OB book to keep as a reference when I'm done with nursing school, but I don't feel that I'd be able to trust this book. If I found many errors in an area that I'm familiar with, how many errors are there that I'm unable to discern since I'm not yet familiar with that material? Many of my classmates found additional errors, and also feel that the book is untrustworthy. It's too bad, because I'm sure that the book does contain worthwhile information. I'm sorry that I wasted the money on this book. I plan to invest my money in a medical OB book instead. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book
4-0 out of 5 stars nursing student
The book was really good at reviewing the chapters in the text.It didn't really help me for the tests because our test questions were complex and difficult and I felt like the questions in this book were not. If you are having a hard time grasping the content in the text then this book might help but if you feel like you understand the text then this book my be unnecessary.

4-0 out of 5 stars great textbook
I have really enjoyed this book (as much as a textbook can be enjoyable). It is concise, well-written, and to the point. Information is intelligently arranged so it is easy to reference and look things up. There are also lots of care plans included to help you out with clinical paperwork. My only gripe with this book is that the glossary is kind of puny- so if you don't know what something is (and there are lots of words in OB that you won't hear anywhere else) then you have to go back to the index and flip through the chapters to find where that thing is talked about in the book. ...
