5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable Reference
We have the 1988 edition of this text - it's been a reliable resource text for almost 18 years!

5-0 out of 5 stars Rock solid: reliable source
This book is AWESOME! And it does contain plenty of comprehensive information (some say too much?). It has been a reliable friend throughout my second year of RN school for passing exams and continued learning. This Med-Surg book stands far ahead of others (and I have reviewed plenty of them out there). Of course, this is only an opinion, and it might be said that selection of a med-surg book is of an ambiquous nature, with personal preference being the ultimate guide. But I have hated some others, to me this is the most easily understood, question answering, reference teaching guide I own for the sole purpose of occupation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nursing Care Plans: Nursing Diagnosis and Intervention
This is a very good book for care plan help. Not alot of psychosocial but has an online resource that will help you too.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a nursing student's lifesaver!
This book saved me in nursing school! Every semester my teachers kept a copy of my nursing plans to show future students. My friends struggled with care plans, but this book made it easy for me. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are a nursing student, you NEED this book...
I am a senior nursing student and this book is a GODSEND for care plan assignments and as a supplement for class lectures. Organization by medical diagnosis rather than nursing diagnoses helps by including pathophysiology and disease-specific nursing interventions. Interventions are listed very thoroughly with clearly explained rationales. This book is also a great tool for clinical though its size makes it somewhat cumbersome to carry around all day. I highly highly recommend it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars really a perfect pic
This book really helped me though out my preceptorship in the operating room. I was thrown in to this unit as a nursing student. the facility had never taken on senior nursing students in a long term segment (7 weeks) and didn't have any idea what to teach me or what to do with me. My preceptor handed me this book and by the end i was able to circulate and scrub on minor cases with complete confidence in what i was doing. it is concise in some areas, and detailed where it needs to be, gives great explinations and rationals. the only problem i found was the different tools. The west coast and the east coast have different names for the instruments, and the ones named in the book are more consistant with the names in the west. but other than that. love love loved it

I am not a case manager, however I work with them on a regular basis. I have found this book extremely helpful in understanding the field, theimpact case management can and does have on the health care deliveryprocess, and how it helps improve outcomes and contain costs, especially incritical and chronic care cases. This book is an invaluable tool for casemanagers and anyone who requires proven, nuts and bolts information on theprocess of case management and the role of case managers in health care.Lots of basic, hands-on, how-to information.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Study Guide book for success in nursing!
I can't imagine a more helpful study guide.Full of NCLEX test questions, their answers, and an explanation of WHY it is the correct answer (in the back of the book) plus succinct yet complete outlines of the chapters and more; this is a book for students who want to learn the nursing material as quickly and asthoroughly as possible. Truly a gem of a book. Great for study/review the night before the test. I found this especially helpful with my study of Fluid, Electrolyte and Acid-Base Balance which is one of the more difficult concepts for me and many others to grasp.Use it along with the textbook, CD-ROM and companion websites for greater learning.Any time you spend in this book is time well-spent.A well-kept secret aid are the study guides to nursing textbooks which, at many schools, are "optional" to purchase, but trust me, they are mandatory for your learning! Good luck future nurses!
5-0 out of 5 stars Works for Me, too!!!
I used the updated version of this book, and my goodness, it was worth the time.I could not put it down...it is rare that anyone can be excited about reading a textbook, but that is my feeling!

5-0 out of 5 stars Worked for me!!
Although this book can seem a bit daunting at first (I mean, it's over 1600 pages!) it is a wonderful book to have.It was required for my first semester in nursing school and I found myself using it even then to write care plans and find rationales and now that I'm in the med-surg semester I use it even more to refer to pathophysiology of patients conditions, look for tips on what to watch for in every patient that could indicate possible complications, etc. It includes a brief overview of the anatomy & physiology of the following body system and also gives an detailed, indepth step-by-step"how to" for assessments of a patient, including abnormal findings. It's a great tool to have at your fingertips to make you more aware of what to look for in your patients. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not that great
This book seems to be helpful if you are searching for really specific diagnoses, but not for just a broad range. For example, risk for impaired skin integrity is due to chemotherapy. It is very specific in each category, and makes it impossible to use for a regular patient care plan. This was partly my fault because i did not read into it a lot before purchasing (bought in the store). I am hoping that I can return it and get a general care plan book, that is not so specific in the related to and evidenced by parts. This one would probably come in handy when I am in specialties phase this summer, however I am in an accelerated LPN program, and our specialties are short in length, so it is a waste of money. I do agree with a previous review that the book is not very well organized either.

1-0 out of 5 stars absolutely awful
This book is a required book at my nursing school, otherwise I would be selling it now in the used book section. I have wasted sooo much time searching for things in this book. The organization is pitiful. It is organized by system, then disease process, so all of the nursing diagnosis are specifically related to disease(good luck if the disease isn't in the book). I would not recommend this book to anyone, I have since spent lots of time and additional money trying to find a good care plan book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I reviewed 4 different Nursing care plan books; overall, this one is the best and clearest.I would highly recommend this one over others. It is the only one that clearly articulates, NUMERICALLY, what a nursing goal should aim to achieve so you can actually MEASURE if your interventions were successful. Oh..and it really is easy to read. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Better Choices Available
This author has some good insights contained in the Author's Notes at the beginning of each nursing diagnosis. In her Notes she explains the differences between diagnoses that seem almost identical. But you can get the same insights in her smaller, more concise Handbook of Nursing Diagnosis, without the expense and inconvenience of the full-blown, padded-out version. Also, the smaller Handbook should not be your first care planning book.Instead, it's a valuable supplement that will help refine your understanding of the topic.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste-O-Money
Bought this book as it was 'required' for nursing courses.I suspect this is the only reason this book is ever even purchased, because it IS NOT HELPFUL!Never seen such a convoluted resource, this was the WORST.IMO, Carpenito is obviously riding on her laurels from past publications. If you are a beginning nursing student that is attempting to make heads or tails of care planning, save yourself the agony now.THUMBS DOWN!

2-0 out of 5 stars Thereis a better choice!
I bought this book thinking it would be a bigger and better version of the spiral bound Handbook of Nursing Diagnosis. It really isn't!I feel that this book is hard to navigate through and never use it!I paid 45ish dollars for this book and think it was a HUGE WASTE OF MONEY.I do, on the other hand, LOVE the SPIRAL BOUND HANDBOOK OF NURSING DIAGNOSIS by the same author Carpenito-Moyet.I have discussed this topic with many of my classmates who also have these books and eveyone of my classmates have agreed. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I have updated to the new edition
I bought the first edition of this book after transfering from a multisystem ICU to a neuro-surgical ICU. I have found it to be a very Nurse friendly book. I have several resources for neuro, some are very complex.Joanne Hickey has put together information on a very cerebral topic that is for Nurses from novice to expert.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love neuroscience-get this book!
The Clinical Practice of Neurological and Neurosurgical Nursing is an excellent overview of the care and management of the neuroscience patient. It's perspective is largely that of neurosurgery/ trauma nursing and is focused predominately on the acute phases of care. This text is arranged topically by disease/ injury process with the introductory chapters oriented towards concerns in neuroscience nursing. The depth and breadth of the material is suitable to meet my needs in the neuro-intensive care unit of the Level I trauma center in which I work. It provides a ready and easy to use reference with solid explantions of disease process, complications, treatment, pharmacology, and nursing considerations. I recommend this text to new nurses in neuroscience at my hospital regularly and I am currently using it to prepare for certification in neuroscience nursing. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars It's OK.
This book does have alot of valuable info in it, however if you want to purchase a textbook that gives you quick, easy to follow facts this is NOT the book for you. I had to purchase this book for school and all of my classmates including myself complained about how hard it was to get quick, simple info from it. The explanations in this book are very complex and you have to read for a long time before finding what you want to know. Surgical Technology for the Surgical Technologist: A Positive Care Approach was the other book I had to buy for school, and it it much better than this book. I do not recommend this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Basic
I think this is a great book but it's a little too brief for what I was looking for. I needed more detail about each procedure, step-by-step. I found I had better luck with Alexander's Care of the Surgical Patient.

4-0 out of 5 stars Instructor opinion
This year I have chosen the Berry & Kohn text. I think it is an excellent choice. I use this book in conjunction with Surgical Technology for the Surgical Technologist. Berry & Kohn is more extensive and includes more detail. However, I have not been able to find a text bank or instructor guide ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Straight A's Medical Surgical Nursing
I used someone else's book who loves it, and is doing well with all the titles going into fourth semester now. It's a quick review of materials using a margin note system for overview, and more detail on that same page. Separated by subject, it's easier to read and find specifics than some review guides that mix up all the subjects. Also good for test review, my friend said the overviews in the marjins were enough to add points at test time.
2-0 out of 5 stars There are better study guides
I bought this book because it had a CD-ROM with NCLEX-type questions. Unfortunately, the CD-ROM can't be used on computers without Windows 98 or higher. I took the disk to my college library, hoping to use the disk on one of the PC machines there, but I discovered that the disk has to be installed on the computer. Installing software on public computers is verboten at my school. This means the CD-ROM is basically worthless to me. The book itself is basically an outline of a Med-Surg nursing textbook. There are surprisingly few illustrations for a study guide.

I got the fluid and electrolytes book first. To this day I have no problems understanding the topic. I now have the whole set. There is a list of defined terms beginning each chapter, a pre-test and post-test, and the subject is outlined in between. Any book of this series is highly recommended to the nursing student. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
This book provides a very easy to read, well-illustrated, and thorough approach to EKG's.I have tried to use other EKG books in the past and found them too superficial & piecemeal or too boring & dense/text-oriented.First of all the book is filled with hundreds of full-page "real EKG's" that are used as the examples for the teaching points. There are also many color digrams.I like how this book gives a nice step-by-step approach, very easy to read.I aslo like how it has different "levels" so that if I want to dive in deeper and learn more subtle/advanced interpretations, it's all right there, with the basic level info next to it for quick review.I like how even this book's "basic/intro" level covered much more practical material than other books...when I first went through it, even after only getting through half of the intro level, I finally understood what is J point, and what atrial enlargement looks like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent 12 Lead ECG Book for All Levels
This is by far the best book for learning and refining 12-lead ECG interpretation skills that I have read. The material is structured so that it can be used as a classroom text or as a self-guided teaching tool.Within the book, Garcia and Holtz divide the material into three clearly marked levels from a basic review of cardiac physiology through an advanced level of ECG interpretation. The text is written in an easy-to-read, conversational style and the graphics and ECG tracings are some of the best I've ever seen in this kind of book. On top of this, Garcia and Holtz have included plenty of useful diagnostic pearls throughout each chapter, making this a highly readable and educational book.I use levels one and two to teach my paramedic students the fundamentals of 12-lead ECG interpretation.I also recommend Garcia and Miller's "Arrhythmia Recognition: The Art of Interpretation" (ISBN 0763722464) as a rhythm interpretation reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent study guide
This book is hands down the best book on EKG interpretation I've ever used.Garcia and Holtz start you from the basics and go no where but up to the top, all the while drilling in the concepts with repeat practice EKGs.This is what makes it extremely practical - you'll be able to put the information you learn to use right away.If you're just starting to learn about EKGs, this book is well worth the cost ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Might Be What I Need
I needed a book that focused only on Nursing Intervention because most of my exams are more based on "what does the nurse do?".At times, we do not really need all that the textbook says, especially when an exam comes up, and you just need to summarize. So far, it seems to be good, and I have a feeling that this is what will follow me through nursing school. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
I wish I could have found this book earlier when I was still a freshman. The contents are well-explained, and easy to understand.I put aside our school's textbook, and used this one instead - helped me a lot!

2-0 out of 5 stars Annoying book
As a nursing student, this book is used quite heavily by the faculty. The book's infinite charts, tables, and figures are enough to drive you nuts. There are very few good photos. Our nursing teachers were regularly having to use other books to show us photographs of whatever we were studying. Also, after reading the material, I always felt like I didn't really know the material. If I really wanted to know the material well, I had to go study it in an Anatomy & Physiology book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Many nursing books are horrible to read and comprehend - NOT this series of nursing books! Easy to understand charts, lists, description boxes, etc. spells terminology and info for newbies easily and appropriately.
