Eighty Bucks? From a Geek?
Overpriced and too techno-geeky. Juiceheads out here are looking for information that is of practical use and not medical encyclopedias. And who you gonna trust for that kind of info? A technocrat who has no real world dirt under his fingernails, or someone who has Been There and Done That? As THE Man said, "If you write a book on steroids, at least look like you can pick up the book without straining a muscle!" Buy THE ultimate reference book as authored by THE man who knows this stuff and save yourself half the money on top of it. That book is the one authored by Anthony Roberts. Excellent reference for herbal medicines
Being a licensed practitioner of Chinese medicine here in the US, I purchased the PDR for Herbal Medicines, 3rd ed. because I wanted to have access to western scientific resource material about the many (about 700) herbal medicinals covered in the volume. If you're looking for a good clinical or diagnostic manual for learning how to prescribe herbal medicinals, this book, by no means, articulates how to actually effectively prescribe herbal medicines properly. In order to prescribe herbal medicines safely and effectively, they must be applied according to a diagnostic pattern discrimination methodology that is suitable for each patient's constitution, clinical presentation and pathological disease situation. All that said, however, the book is an excellent resource for information about known scientific research, references to other source materials as well as pharmacological, chemical, toxicological cautions and contraindications for each herb covered in the volume. In fact, for this kind of information, the text is hard to beat. No one should use or prescribe a medicinal that they do not know the possible side effects and toxicity potential for that particular plant material. Although some naive individuals believe that all medicinal plants are safe to use, in fact, some herbal substances are toxic, contraindicated during pregnancy, should only be used for a short period of time, etc. This book has explicit information that is consistent with many of the best herbal medicine text books that I own. The book even has ratings by the well known German 'Commission E' board that approves herbal medicines in Europe for professional use. And if that isn't enough, many Chinese and Ayurvedic medicinals are also covered. There is also a section that covers many nutritional supplements on the market as well. All in all, I highly recommend the book to those who want detailed identification, dosage, usage, pharmacological and toxicological reference material for a large number of useful plant medicinal substances. This is a great book to fill in the blanks that many other reference texts simply do not cover.

A thorough and useful reference
The PDR for Herbal Medicines is an excellent, thorough and scientific resource that will prove invaluable to physicians, nurse practitioners, naturopaths and others who use botanicals in the clinical setting.Also important for physicians who want to make sure that patients self-medicating with herbs are doing so safely.The various indexes make it easy to access vital facts rapidly.
Buyers beware on this one.

A good book with a mixed result

Opens up a world of herbal options for optimal health
I like the way this book lists herbal remedies side by side with conventional medical treatments. It's useful to see your options laid out like that. I like the organization. It's easy to find what you need. I also like that one of the authors has an M.D. it's encouraging to see that a traditionally trained doctor sees the value of phytomedicinals. The book is organized by health problems. Under each heading, there is a listing of herbal as well as conventional remedies, as well as a paragraph describing how each remedy works. This method of organization makes much more sense than listing herbs alphabetically, especially for someone who's in a hurry to find something. I only just received the book from amazon.com, but I can already foresee that I will use it often. I only wish they had made the book bigger and printed it on nicer paper. Oh well...you can't have everything, I guess.

Detailed introduction
Comprehensive book. Requires good understanding of basic statistics and mathematics for some chapters. However without this, it is still a great book for a solid foundation on Clinical Trial design and conduct.

CONCISE MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH
The fact that this book was designed for researchers, who are involved in experimental (clinical) trials, makes the basic knowledge of statistics essential. Good intro textbook

Very basic book
This book just goes into the very basics of estimating renal sufficiency. Drugs that should be immediate red flags are glossed over, interactions are ignored, and kidney physiology is ultra-basic.
Needs an Update
As a nephrology fellow I found the concise tabular format in this book very useful and reassuring while beginning my consultation months.I still like the basic idea behind its publication, but am increasingly disappointed.Much of the dosing information is readily available now for free, and it is frequently more accessible on palmbased programs such as epocrates and medscape that avoid the need for carrying multiple pocket references.I would like to see the text regularly updated, go beyond data available in existing palm programs, such as including recommendations/cautions regarding drug combinations for transplant recipients, discuss intraperitoneal dosing for CAPD patients on relevant medications, include critical liver metabolism pathways (i.e. P450 enzymes systems) so interactions with other meds might be better predicted.I would enthusiastically support adding a palmtop version to the appropriately updated text.

New Edition of an Old Stand-By
Now in its twenty sixth annual edition the PDR for Nonprescription Drugs and Dietary Supplements is a compendium of information on all of the drugs sold over the counter in the United States. The information on the drugs comes from the manufacturer, has been blessed by the manufacturer's medical department and is based on information officially filed with the FDA. The publisher takes the information from the manufacturer and puts it together in one book with similar information from all of the other manufacturers.

Excellent Choice
I have purchased a few books for pharmacy tech and find this to be the most successful. The author states facts clearly. It is easy to understand and is full of useful information. I strongly recommend it to all in the pharmacy field. It helped me understand it all and the tests were a great review. It is definetly worth your time and money. It really is an excellent choice! A Must HaveBook
I have had the pleasure of being a student of Dr. Moini's. He is very interesting and informative on the pharmacy tech program. His book is laid out so that you can follow and understand each subject. I recommend this book for anyone wanting to be a pharmacy tech.

A Big Disappointment
While it's true that this book covers quite a bit of material, has nice pictures and is reasonably well organized, the publishers should immediately fire whoever it was that claims to have proofread this mess! And this textbook is indeed a mess.

BURTON ROSE AGAIN IS EXCELLENT
FOR RESIDENT AND FELLOWS AS STAFF TOO, THE FIFTH EDITION OF BURTON ROSE IS EXCELLENT, COVERING BASIC CONCEPTS AS WELL AS ALL THE RECENT RESEARCH MEDICAL NEWS IN FHE FIELDOF FLUID AND ACID BASE PHYSIOLOGY.IT SHOULD BE RECOMENDED FOR PRIVATE AND PUBLIC MEDICAL LIBRARY.

Outstanding text, but consider "The essentials" for a lighter read
No doubt, this is a terrific textbook and is a great resource for Nephrology fellows, ICU fellows and general physiologists.However, for the med student or housestaff who would like to digest the basics of renal electrolyte handling and acid-base homeostasis, I'd like to recommend "Renal Pathophysiology the Essentials" by B.D. Rose and H.G. Rennke (ISBN: 0683073540). It is from 1994 and may lack some of the molecular details, but is an even more "readable" text.

The best in its field
I found this book to be very useful in understanding the subject of acid base and electrolyte disorders. A great book - information overload
This is a very useful reference to have if you work extensively on HPLC.I find its of more use to understand concepts ...there is a lot of information here. Plactical and Rational method Development!
Rational Method development for HPLC is resented. Instruction of rational development of 3-solvent separation system is excellent. This book also has useful know-hows and tools in practical laboratory experiments, such as strength of hydrogen bonding of base silica and nomograph for estimation of"solvent strength" for reversed phase HPLC.
