Learning to Speak Alzheimers
Although I have only read the sections pertaining to the beginning stages of Alzheimers (since that is where we are now with my mother-in-law) this book has been extremely helpful already. It was actually recommended to me by a co-worker, who said she refers back to it frequently as her mother-in-law grows progressively worse. I highly recommend it as a starting point if you are just beginning this journey with someone you love.

To Much Fluff

Excellent resource for care givers!
In reviewing this book, I discovered it is an excellent resource not only for professional care providers, but for family members as well. There are very detailed examples of specific activities to do on a daily basis, and could be easily adapted for varying levels of dementia.

Wonderful book
By giving you an understanding of how the person with alzheimers views their world, this book helps the caregiver make life a little easier, happier, and more meaningful. It also reduces the stress and frustration of the caregiver because you gain knowledge of how to handle situations that before were a struggle.

Excellent for anyone touched by dementia
Jolene Brackey spoke at the nursing home where I work with patients with dementia. She is an incredible speaker and author. This book has so many wonderful ideas for nursing home workers and people who have loved ones with dementia. It is very reader-friendly and easy to understand. Jolene includes many real life examples to illustrate her ideas. She has a sense of humor and a sense of compassion that radiates with every chapter. An Essential Handbook
I am an Illinois legal aid attorney and owner of Southwest Medicals, an online medical supply and equipment business.If you are planning on providing home healthcare for a famiy member, you need this helpful book.The cost saving tips are especially useful. I also recommend the American Medical Association's Guide to Home Caregiving by Angela Perry.

Easy to read-full of tips
This book was very easy to read and contained a lot of practical tips on a wide variety of subjects. I liked the tips on how to make items yourself, cutting costs on things like hair washing aids and for making your home safe and navigable. The simple illustrations make the instructions easy to follow and the abundance of listed resources for more information and support was a nice bonus.

Extremely thoughtful and valuable resource
I find this book to be a very loving and thoughtful account of the stories of caregivers of loved-ones with Dimentia. It has practical advise on how to cope, where to go for support and even a some comical moments told with the utmost of respect!I would recommend this book to anyone who is a caregiver or knows someone who is.It seems we all know someone with this disease.

Very Helpful
This book was nice to have around when I needed to talk to someone about how I felt, but felt guilty complaining when the people I was taking care of were going through such a difficult time. It was a very helpful companion and good to see what others have gone through and tried. I recommend it if you find yourself in the same unfortunate situation as I did.

A Must-Read For Caregivers!
Caregiving usually doesn't happen gradually. Families are often thrust into the situation because of a crisis, without any experience on how to manage the overwhelming stress, responsibilities, legalities, and medical aspects. Gary Barg has done an excellent job sorting it all out with 'The Fearless Caregiver', guiding the reader through the maze. Very easy to read, motivating, empowering, and highly recommended! A Must-Read for all Caregivers!
It is about time that someone tackled the issues that caregivers face.It can often be a lonely and confusing time.I was a caregiver for my mother a few years ago and looked everywhere for a book like this.I needed something to walk me through all of the things I didn't understand.This a well-crafted, easy to read and understand book that all caregivers should read.I wish it had been available five years ago!I recommend it highly.

The Fearless Caregiver
I recently purchased this book by Gary Barg. It is a terrific source for all caregivers and has every aspect that needs to be addressed in it. It takes you through every part of caregiving, from how to take care of yourself to attending to legal matters promptly. Pros and Cons...
I used this book for medical school histology in combination with the Junqueira textbook. I liked this atlas because it is predominantly drawings and so you get to see the "ideal" appearance of things. There are lots of labels on the drawings pointing out the different features of what is being illustrated...this is very helpful and other atlases and textbooks I saw did not do as good a job with this.There is some text as well which is mildly helpful.
Excellent book to start your medical career

a must read........
this book is chock full of information on the realities of dealing with alzheimer's disease and other memory impairment disorders.it is clearly written and uses examples of real-time situations to highlight situations that can arise and suggestions on how to deal with them.highly recommend it for care providers and others in the lives of those with memory impairment disorders.required reading for adult children to gain an appreciation for the pressures on the care provider(s) for a parent.

The 36 Hour Day
This is a really good book. I kept borrowing it from the library and kept getting fined for having it too long, so I thought I'd save myself time and trouble (and money, too) and buy it. I've come across alot of the same things that are mentioned in the book. This book is helpful to give the caregiver a different perspective on AD and it's nice to know that you're not alone in your struggles. It also reminds you that others have it worse than you do. I recommend this book for anyone who has elderly relatives, with the increased incidence of AD the chances are pretty good/bad that a relative will suffer from it. I think it's best to be prepared for the worst before it gets here. That way you'd have a start on what care would be required and how much you'll have to change your life to accomadate your aging relatives.

Terrific!
I had the opportunity to work with Ms. Bell at the Helping Hands center almost 10 years ago. It is an amazing program and she is the most amazing person I have ever met. This book teaches you the fundamentals of how the Day Care operates and how to communicate with those afflicted with Dementia. After all these years I still rely on this book and its teachings in my work as a therapist.

Good idea
This book was very easy to read and understand and for someone just starting caregiving the book gives some good ideas. I do think though that for more indepth information there are better books out there.

The single best book on caring for a family member with Alzheimer's disease
As a professional in the Alzheimer's field, as well as a family caregiver, I have read dozens of books on caring for people with Alzheimer's disease. Though there are many excellent ones (Claudia J. Strauss's "Talking to Alzheimer's" and Bell & Troxel's "The Best Friends' Book of Alzheimer's Activities" are other favorites), this is the first book I most recommend to anyone on the challenging journey of caring for someone with Alzheimer's disease. Excellent, affordable, comprehensive
This book is a must-have for anyone responsible for realistic decision making about his/her ability to provide health care at home, as well as an excellent how-to guide for those who accept the inherent responsibilities of the caregiver. I consider it the one "best" guide of those available to meet the needs of the growing number of home caregivers.

Fabulous resource
This truly is a fabulous resource!The information is quite straightforward and covers a wide array of areas/issues that are certain to be impacted by the news of a loved one being ill.The components of the book cover areas such as understanding your feelings, how our fears play out in the ordeal, how to have conversations regarding the illness and ramifications of the illness, how to find resourceful medical care and how to balance one's role in life given the situation. This should be for coping with any medical problem
My spouse had heart disease. At the same time, I was looking for a book for a friend with cancer. I found Precious and read it before giving it as a gift. I realized the suggestions applied to my family. I started using the author's ideas immediately and it helped us tremendously. I find myself quoting her often in my volunteer work at church (with patients) and with friends. One friend called and said she was having serious problem coping with her husband's diabetes. She read the book and called to tell me that after following the advice in Precious, she saw a dramatic change in the way her family communicated and supported each other. Another friend said she was in an argument with her daughter about the father's illness. The mother used the suggestions in the book to calm her daughter down. Later that evening, the daughter (in her 30s) came up to her mom and said, "Thank you. What you said and how you said it was wonderful!" This book should not even have cancer on the cover. It's practical, moving, upbeat and extremely helpful for patients and families coping with any medical challenge. J. Long, past president of a personnel agency

Essential for caregivers
This highly detailed and easily read volume seems to cover every consideration and situation that could arise in caring for an elderly person.The emphasis is on in-home maintenance of the elderly, specifically parents, although one chapter is devoted to selecting and monitoring a nursing home.The book gives the impression of being able to prepare the reader for any situation and to help him cope with whatever comes up. That sounds like my story
There were many anecdotes in the book that sounded like they were taken from my own personal experience.It was comforting to know that there are others with similar issues.I came away with many new ideas to try and make my situation more tolerable.I would recommend this book to anyone who finds themselves in a comparable situation.

Helpful for survivors, but not everyone survives.
Silver's book is a helpful journalistic guidebook for spouses and partners of breast cancer victims; Part I is made up of 8 chapters and Part 2, 13 chapters. In the forward, Dr. Frederick P. Smith writes, "the support of a spouse can make a significant difference to the patient."
Selenium helps fight breast cancer and other cancers as well
The nutrient, selenium, has been shown in a large placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical study -- the most prestigious type of scientific study of nutrients and drugs -- to be effective in fighting breast cancer. Specifically, a large group of people who were given each day a yeast tablet containing 200 microgram (mcg) of selenium for seven years had only half the death rate from cancer as a similarly large group of people who received yeast tablets containing no selenium. The reduction in death rate was higher for breast cancer than for certain other forms of cancer. The results of this dramatic study were published in the medical profession's own journal: The Journal of the American Medical Association.

Long Term Care Lessons for the Long Term Care Nurse
I am an RN who works with Medicare and nursing home residents. I know for a fact that most people I talk to are astounded to find out that Medicare pays for a very small portion of a person's stay in a nursing home - if anything at all. I learned so much from this book and so will you.

A Long Term Care Insurance Information Gold Mine
Everything you need to know to help you wade through the morass of details involved in choosing long term care insurance. The author has done an excellent job of organizing her subject and making it easy to navigate from one topic to another. Although is is best to read the book from begininng to end, it is designed such that the reader can skip sections and hone in on the subjects of primary interest. All in all an excellent, thorough, and easy to understand treament of a relatively complicated subject.
