As teenagers from a rough part of Newark, New Jersey, Sampson Davis, Rameck Hunt, and George Jenkins had nothing special going for them except loving mothers (one of whom was a drug user) and above-average intelligence. Their first stroke of luck was testing into University High, one of Newark's three magnet high schools, and their second was finding each other. They were busy staying out of trouble (most of the time), and discovering the usual ways to skip class and do as little schoolwork as possible, when a recruitment presentation on Seton Hall University reignited George's childhood dream of becoming a dentist. The college was offering a tempting assistance package for minorities in its Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Plus Program. George convinced his two friends to go to college with him. They would help each other through. None of them would be allowed to drop out and be reabsorbed by the Newark streets.Read more

The Pact... Packs some good information for young people and their parents
The Pact was a book that I was interested in reading for some time. My son (9 yrs old), and I decided that the best time to read the book would be before his bedtime. We would alternate reading different chapters. The Pact was an inspiring story that I believe anyone could relate too. It's about community support, friendship and perserverance. This generation needs to hear stories about what is possible, and this book delivers on that message. I strongly recommend it for youth groups everywhere. We need to teach our kids how to choose friends, and that friends can support and nurture each others dreams. Dream BIG!
I will put this on my recommended list for students
One of my biggest challenges as an educator is building literacy. I know that the most successful students read outside of class, but I have a hard time finding books that manageable and interesting enough to grab the interest of the students that I work with in DC. I will recommend this book to my students because it helps make the choices of black students real in clear language. How do you successfully defer gratification for years and years to build a career? This book doesn't have definite answers but it does give an example that students can look up to. More programs like the Seton Hall program that helped bridge the transition to college are necessary for first-generation high school students. I also dug the fact that these three black men did not seem to be supermen in the way that Cedric Jennings was portrayed in "The Hope In the Unseen". Books like "The Pact" show that the best dreams are birthed by students in the presence of consistent mentoring. I hope that all urban mentors and educators will consider this book for motivational fuel.
Great read...
I read about these three in some magazine (Essence?) while I was in a bookstore cafe. I went upstairs to browse the book and ended up buying it. I'm so glad that I went to that bookstore just to browse around or I would have never known anything about it.I'd heard of these three from another magazine I subscribe to but never really knew what their deal was.It was very interesting to read about three young men who grew up in the inner city projects of Newark, two of them exposed themselves to crime, all of their manhood was tested, and two went to jail/juvenile hall. But with all those pitfalls, each one of them had a personality that would not let each other fall down.One was an activist, the next was a serious hard worker, and the third an optimistic motivator who stayed out of trouble.These guys were so good for each other. It was interesting to read about their sides of the story in a conversational tone that showcases their down-to-Earth personalities, their mild secrets that the other two will enjoy reading, and even a couple love interests would probably be flattered too.

I highly recommend this work
The concepts in this book have strenghtened the loving care we provide at our hospice. Our patients and families love the angels of hospice who provide true sacred encounters.I would recommend this work to ANY healthcare organization committed to providing the best care imaginable.

Inspirational and instructive
Mountains Beyond Mountains really helped me to understand the immense poverty faced by the people of Haiti. Paul Farmer's quest to provide these people the healthcare they deserve is an inspiration that should be required reading for young people or anybody leading a self centered and materialistic life. Americans need to be reminded of how fortunate they truly are and how we all take things like healthcare, housing, clean water and job availability for granted. My son "read" the audio book for his summer reading assignment and finished it in about one week. Highly recommended!

Love your patienys

I am reviewing medicine for fun

Good Questions, Poor Step 3 Review
I used this Q-Bank book to review for step 3 along with Crush.The questions in this book are good and reflective of the information covered in Crush.Problem is, the questions are in no relation to what was asked on Step 3.I thought I was going to do well on Step 3, I recieved 225 on Step 1, and 230 on Step 2, but somehow by memorizing crush and this Kaplan Q-Bank, I managed to do poorly on Step 3.I was very disappointed on test day to realize that none of the questions from Kaplan even remotely resembled the questions on Step 3. ... One of the better books on comparing specialties
I would recommend this book to the undecided medical students in their 3rd year- I bought this early in my 4th year after having read Anita's book on Choosing a Medical Specialty, and still being uncertain. I was trying to talk myself out of Gen Surg... Ultimately, a book is not going to make the decision for you, but it is good to be informed and it helps to either reinforce what your gut instinct is telling you. Try to borrow a friends or buy a used copy- but it's definitely worth a read!

Great advise for the single med student
This book has great advise in it for the single med student.However, if you happen to be married and a parent most of the advise is far too time consuming and impractical.

Great Resource for Nursing Faculty
This book is intended for part-time clinical faculty in nursing programs but it has excellent chapters that can be helpful to anyone teaching in nursing education. It addresses many helpful techniques that experienced clinical educators have used, as well results of research in clinical teaching. The chapter dealing with interpersonal issues in clinical education is especially helpful in addressing the difficult situations that arise with students. Great for anyone considering to become a doctor
This book was great, but most of it was common sense knowlege. I had wished it had gone into more detail about medical shool etc...The ending of the book sort of just dropped off, I kind of expected more. But it was a real eye opener, and it showsthat as long as you put your mind to something you can be anything you want to. A great self motivator!

Good only if your just starting your research
I found this book pretty superficial. It includes a lot of common sense ancedotes that, if you've done much research at all, will sound very repetitive. This is a great book

Required reading for healthcare providers
I love this book.The writing is wonderful makes you feel as though you are right there going through it with her.I could not put the book down.I have only been a nurse for 5yrs and I honestly hope that I have always treated my pts able to communicate or not with kindness and dignity.I can assure you after reading this I will most certainly be more aware of what I am doing and how I am interacting with my patients.I wish there were a sequal to know how she is doing now.I highly recommend this book.Any healthcare provider who would read this book and come away thinking Sue a whiner is not a healthcare worker I would want anywhere near me.Unfortunately Sue is accurate there are far too few compassionate healthcare providers these days in my opinion.One could hope that if more care providers were to read this book this very sad trend would change.Thank you Sue for a book giving the world the patients perspcetive of a hospital stay.I am forever greatful.

Bed number Ten
This was one of the best books I have read in a long time.I ordered this bookby mail and recieved it on Friday afternoon and started reading it instantly.It is now sunday afternoon and I just finished it.I want so badly to talk to this lady to see how she is today!!To read how uncaring so many people were is so heart breaking to me.There were the few that took the time to be more attentive but everyone should have been that way!! I am a nurse at a Houston hospital and I see nurses and other staff act like that everyday and it breaks my heart because I am a very caring nurse and go above and beyond to help my patients.Every nurse needs to read this book to see how people can be feeling when you treat them that way!!I would recommend this book to everyone I work with and know!!

A real tearjerker!
I am an RN and all too often, patients are faced with uncaring caregivers who perceive meeting patient's needs as "too much trouble". If there is a medical person who perceives Sue as a "whiner", I would not want that person to enter my room! The book is a compelling novel, I could not put it down! It included wonderful stories of her travels and family. I wished the book was longer, I hated for it to end. I cried throughout the last portion of the book because it was so touching. The one thing I think it lacks is getting its point across to caregivers. Some caregivers are too uncaring to fully comprehend the torture Sue went through lying there day after day, unable to move or speak, being at the mercy of others. Every doctor should read this book !
Many doctors take their communication skills for granted, but the sad fact remains that most of us do not do a good job talking to our patients. Learning how to improve your bedside manner is extremely difficult to do, but this book shows you how you can do so. Reading this book is likely to be one of the best investments of your time you can make - and it's full of practically useful stuff you can implement immediately !

I'm not a doctor, but I'm often a patient.This book has shown me how to communicate better with my doctor.In fact, I think it has excellent and helpful information for everyone, as we all try to make others understand our desires and comply with them.

I am a patient of Dr. Vliet
I purchased Dr. Vliet's book while searching for relief from a difficult gynecological and urinary tract problem.I found the chapters dealing with my problem very easy to read and could not put it down. I was so impressed, that I made an appointment to visit her office.Over 4 hours were spent at Dr. Vliet's office going over in great detail my medical history. I had these problems for almost 20 years, and other doctors had told me "it was all in my head"!Dr. Vliet clearly explained why I had these problems and we developed a successful treatment plan. The staff was empathetic and knowledgable. Her research is exceptional and I have recommended this book to other doctors and medical professionals. Very few doctors are knowledgable about hormones largely do to the misinformation in the press and the propaganda distributed by the drug companies.It has been 3 years since I first visited Dr. Vliet and I thank God every day that I found this book and my life has returned to normal.

Great Book, But Not Easy to Read!
This book is fantastic and you get a true sense in your gut that she is telling the facts.I have recommended this book to several doctor friends and regular friends, who all have ordered it.All my friends have the same complaint, that their doctors won't listen to them or won't give them the tests they want.Fortunately my dr. is very open to trying different things.What my doctor said, is it's my body and I can chose how to deal with it.One thing that is interesting, is that I asked my doctor for the N-telopeptide (NTx) test, and they had never heard of it.Also the lab where I had the test done had never heard of it either.Just goes to show you have to be your own advocate!
Still the best book on the subject
I have bought this book seven years ago, when I was still in my thirties. My erratic hormone levels had caused me so much trouble I was at my wits' end. I read the book then, and I have read it again recently, in my early forties, when a sympathetic gynaecologist offered me a hormone replacement therapy. In between the readings, I have done my best to learn all about nutrition, healthy living, and about keeping healthy balance. Reading widely, I discovered dogmas and ideologies both in the allopathic and the alternative medicine camps. Elisabeth Vliet is in neither camp; she is quite the opposite of ideological. She knows what she is talking about, and no authority will change what she has learned through practice. My conclusion today is that Screaming to be heard is probably the best available book on the subject.
