Comforting and Enlightening
This book was reoommended by a friend who read it when her husband was dying.He had read it also and found it very helpful to understand the process he was going through and he highly recommended it and THAT SAYS SOMETHING! When my Mom was passing I read it and although I was scared to read it, it actually was nothing to fear....it was comforting and enlightening and made the process much easier for me as the caretaker and daughter.I recognized and understood the things she was saying much better and knew how to respond in some unusual circumstances.I recommend this book to ANYONE dealing with the process of dying.I bought extra copies to give to others who are losing someone close to them.

FANTASTIC
I wanted to do some hospice volunteering but was so worried during the training that I was not "made" for this kind of work as I am a pretty emotional sort but during my training it was suggested that I read Final Gifts to help ease some of my fears. It was the best thing I could have done, though it is never easy to lose a patient it sure opened my eyes to near death awareness and the needs of those leaving this world. I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone - one who is losing a loved one - one who would like to work with those dying - or just one with questions of the end of life process. I thank both authors from the bottom of my heart for this book.

A blessing during a difficult time

Quickly settles disputes, answers questions, a "MUST" for all home care nurses & their management teams !!!!
I have the 4th edition (at this time is the most recent edition in print) and as a psych home care nurse, this little, portable wealth of knowledge has helped me validate to management, as well as to public health and other surveyors, the range in situations that qualify "homebound status" for psychiatric patients.Throughout the book there are samples provided to support a variety of situations that help the nurse better understand, and therefore more accurately report, on each sector of the OASIS forms.Medicare regulations are explained in detail, and I learned information that I had not known in the 14 years I have been doing mental health home care nursing.The manual provides a history and background of homecare, its evolution, provides an overview of documentaion, including the importance of coding, and its significance in home care.Also, valuable tips on improving the nursing visit, setting achievable goals, managing the case, and the guidelines for care for all the home care disciplines, are provided, so the nurse can be knowledgable regarding the roles of the other disciplines.There is a great resource section at the end of the book, and home care definitions, roles, and abbreviations are delineated in this manual as well.All home care codes are listed.

Decent book
What can I say, its a mini version of The Language of Medicine. It has all the terms and test and abbreviations. I have not had a chance to use it yet, but my professor who has been in the field of translation and interpreting for 16 years now, swears by it.Its even a great book to have if you are a native English speaker but cannot understand the medical mumbo-jumbo your doctor is telling you.

i needed it for class
I bought this book because I had to have it for school,
More than the essentials
Essentials for the Activity Professional in Long Term Care turned out to be much more than just the essentials. The book is well thought out, and goes into detail when it is needed. I believe that it would be valuable to both the seasoned long term care manager, as well as those new to the field. I particularly liked the "Key Terms" and "Objectives" at the beginning of each chapter, which was great for quickly seeing what REALLY is included in a chapter, which is often difficult to tell in textbooks just from the chapter title. The book also includes facsimiles of actual forms in the documentation section, and there is nothing quite like seeing the real thing. A very well rounded look at long term care. Lots of pictures and charts keep things moving along, and there are self-assessment exams. I would recommend this book to anyone in long term care, regardless of their position. ... Read more

I wish I had read this book sooner !
I have loved K�bler -Ross's work and bought this book when I bought "On Grief and Grieving" by her and David Kessler. I have had it by my bed for months now. I thought that K�bler Ross's last book with Kessler is one of the best books on Grief I have ever read. Now after reading "The Needs of the Dying" I am so sorry I waited so long to read it. Any one who has a loved one with a terminal illness needs this book. It begins with how to deal with the diagnosis, the importance of hope and very helpful tips on getting the help you need from the medical system. It has two great chapters on dealing with pain and preventing unnecessary suffering. There is great information on medications and the fear of addiction. It has sections on advanced directives and how to use them in the hospital situation. What I loved the most is it gives you the information that the doctors and nurses don't always have time to explain. Beside the vital medical information it just has great suggestions on how to have the hard conversations. There are great stories with examples on what to say and not to say to children and insightful information on spirituality. David even talks about people having visions as they near death. It also tenderly describes what to expect at the end. It helps you feel like you can have some control in a situation that makes you feel you have lost all control. I wish I had this book when my loved one was dying. I know this is not a book that anyone wants to read, but if you find yourself in this situation , do not wait to read this book. I now know why Mother Teresa, Marianne Williamson and Elisabeth K�bler Ross and my friends felt this book was important. I highly recommend it. Don't miss the comfort it will bring you and your loved ones.

needs of the dying
the author is to much in the zone of "I". I have difficulty reading writings of those who are to much in the "I".I think using the words we or they at times tends to make the reading much more palatalable

What a beautifully written book about death and the dying process.I only wish that I had been able to read this and so many more like it when my beloved mother was going through the dying process. I would have been able to understand so much better just what she was trying to communicate to me.

Excellent and practical!
This book is spectacular. It covers all of the major points in palliative care giving the reader very practical and useful information. The chapters on non-pain symptom management and communication are fabulous.I just can't say enough good things about this book. It is an excellent overview for students, residents and even beginning palliative care fellows.

Excellent Resource
Dr. Hallenbecks book should be part of your core library if you have any interest in Palliative Care.Not only have I found it an excellent clinical reference, I've found it an accessible, easily readable entree to the subtleties of good palliative care practice.Highly recommended reading for all disciplines.

Excellent, compassionate and very pertinent
Reading this book is like having Dr. Hallenbeck at your side coaching the reader to think critically about the evolving discipline of palliative care. Dr. Hallenbeck's voice is compassionate, articulate and strong throughout the book.I have placed Palliative Care Perspectives alongside some of my other references as I struggle to learn to care for patients at the end of life.I highly recommend this book to careproviders (physicians, nurses, PAs, nurse practitioners, socialworkers, chaplains etc) who have patients who are near the end of their lives.I have met Dr Hallenbeck and been privileged to work with him; if you are unable to work with him or to hear him speak, this treatise is like having him at your elbow when you need help. Mosby's Textbook for Long-term care Nursing Assistants
I bought this book along with other recommended reference booksfor CNAs, and in my opinion this one is the best.It is absolutely a pleasure to read, easy to follow procedures, great color pictures and illustrations.Very user-friendly format.I was actually looking forward to study time using this book. Out of date in body mechanics/transfers/safety
As a nursing instructor working closely with rehab we found this book out of date, with no changes in transfers, body mechanics that have been updated for safety throughout the years. The demos show transfers with staff using poor body mechanics, leaning over residents, not using lower legs using lower back muscles. Moving a person to the side of the bed technique demonstratess segmental movement taking the resident out of body alignment. There are up to date techniques for this. Mercury thermometers are no longer used. A two person transfer to the wheelchair in this book involves picking up the resident from the back and lifting with someone in the front with the legs. if a resident needs this then a hoyer a must. For back safety! The Essentials of Nursing Assistants by Mosby Second Edition, includes the same outdated pictures and demonstrations.

As a teacher of nursing assistants, I find the book to be the most helpful.Easy reading, descriptive drawings for the procedures they must learn and practice.I am looking forward to an addition of a "student Workbook".Although this textbook does has excellent chapter reviewswith practice questions and answers.The State exam is 100 questions longand this helps them with not fearing answering multiple choice questions. ... Be informed

One of the most valuable books I've read this year
I am a medical ethicist, and as I read Kaufman's "And a Time to Die" I found myself thinking back to the hospital case consultations I've been involved in. Her observations and conclusions helped me to piece together a much more detailed picture of what's really going on in those situations. Her discussion of pathways, time pressures, reimbursement concerns, and the use of language all ring true. Those who are familiar with hospital settings will recognize much of what Kaufman has observed (a fact that another reviewer objects to), but I believe that she is able to take a "bird's eye view" of these issues in a way that organizes and extends our understanding.
Circles, But Never Lands
The author of this book goes inside the modern American hospital system as an anthropologist, and reports what takes place there when the system is confronted with a terminally ill patient. She examines what cultural imperatives are being brought to bear there to make this an increasingly problematic and decidedly "unnatural" process.

Very Informative, Easy to understand
I am currently a student at the American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Services in NYC and this is the textbook we use for our classes. I find the book very easy to follow and it makes the embalming and dying process, both Antemortem and Postmortem clear. I would definately recommend this book.

ABSOLUTELY MESMERIZING BODY OF WORK!
Since I am not a funeral director but have been interested in the profession (I used to work with friends on the east coast), I could not put the book down because it captured and sustained my interest. As a novice reader to the mortuary profession, I could not believe how much technical information you had to know. It is almost like becoming a physician. Although the diagrams/pictures were not in color, just having them spiked and fueled my interest -- with actual embalming techniques. Amusing Topic, Dull Style
Ths tyle that this book was written in is pretty dran boring, but then again, it is a textbook, and they're supposed to be dull, I reckon. The section on the history of embalming is a bit sparse and the legal requirements will put one to sleep, but the actual theory and practice I found to be quite informative, if somewhat out-of-date. I wish the pictures were in colour (at least some of them) as the balck-and-white rendering defeats the purpose of some of them; for example, we are shown an example of someone who died from carbon monoxide poisoning in which the extremitieas are shown to be bright red -- a characteristic of that type of death -- and the picture illustrating this is not in colour, so one really does not get any additional information from it. There are chapters on dealing with "unusual" deaths -- hanging, refrigeration, poisoning, etc., positioning problems, the methods of aspirating the various sections of the body, organ and tissue donors, care of the autopsied body, embalming of infants and those in various stages of decomposition and most other relevant topics, but I would hate for this to be one's only source -- there are better texts available and of course nothing can beat hands-on experience. This may be a good place for an interested party to start, but I think a more modern text would be in order for actual funeral practice. ... Read more

Readable and valuable
As pointed out in a previous review, this is not a book with the most up-to-date research and theory on grief, loss, and dying. But then, if it were, it would lose its primary audience, ordinary people. If you have done a lot of work in this area then you may not find much new, though I think the book is still a refreshing read. But it is a book I could recommend for many patients and family members, as well as some caregivers who may not have had much education and experience with grieving people. As a physician, I doubt that the book is too "basic" for most colleagues who are not in high-mortality specialties.

rational guide to understanding the needs of the dying
This book explores the rational needs of the dying and is well written and easy to understand, in parts engaging though a bit lengthy. Not Only for the Terminally Ill
This book has the ability to change the lives of any person. It is geared towards the terminally ill, however, due to my profession and my past personal experience with the terminally ill, I thought I might reach a better understanding of what one goes through and expects from us when dying but doesn't out right say. Page 18 changed the way I thought about dying. "If I am living the way I would like to be living then my death, if inevitable, shouldn't pose a fear within myself." It is an overall wonderful book that helps us see what we can do to help the person who is terminally ill and helps us prepare to make our lives more meaningful in the case that we are ever deamed that way ourselves. A lot of Helpful Information
The book was perfect for the class I took. It had great details into everything we covered. The workbook was an awesome study tool for the tests and the Michigan state exam.

Third Edition was Terrific; Going for the Newest One
I am a Nursing Assistant who was first certified 12 years ago with the Third Edition.I was impressed then how wonderfully-illustrated and easy-to-understand this text was.It made learning a new skill that much more easy.Now that I'm supervising refugee and immigrants as they learn the ropes of the profession, I am again using the book to assist in explaining the processes that are second nature to me.It will help them gain the flavor for what I am passionate about and hopefully inspire them to become nursing assistants too.I can't wait to see the newest addition!

A must-read for every "people helping" professional.
