Very helpful guide.
I found this book very helpful.It started by going through the PA profession, and then got into how to actually go about making this a career.It explains each step of the application process, and gives very helpful tips.Overall, this was a great book.I would highly recommend it for anyone considering entering the PA profession.

Good but outdated
I found the information about interviewing helpful but much of the information about the application itself was outdated.The book was written before CASPA was widely used.Also, the author provides a personal website and encourages readers to contact him with any questions, but this website is no longer around.This book is a good cheap purchase, but no substitute for advice from current students.

This is THE book for any aspiring PA prospect!!
I purchased this book the summer of 2005 to begin my "preparations" for entry into the 2006 application cycle. I had aquired all of my prerequisites for the program I was interested in and wanted all of the ammunition I could get my hands on in preparation for the interview process. This book gave me perfect guidance in all aspects of the application process. And if I can do it, OH MY!, anyone can do it!! (If you only knew me ten years ago!) Although I do have a few years of medical experience as a Certified Surgical Technologist under my belt, I applied to only ONE school this year and I just received the call last week for the acceptance! My first go round and I couldn't have asked for more. As competetive as most medical programs are this book, I believe, gave me THE edge to succeed. I can't praise the book enough for all of the insights this book includes, From written preparations to speaking patterns and interview scenerios. Psychiatrist Review
This book really "works"-it's getting rid of the stress in my medical practice.The text is fast reading, no-balony, actually entertaining-loaded with great examples, quotes, and vignettes that drive home the many pearls (and a fair scattering of diamonds) or practical wisdom.I was immediately able to tell this book was written by practicing docs just like me:no wheezy absrtractions, no boring theory-mongoring, and no long lists of desirable (but impossible-to -achieve) "ideal" practices.Instead this is smart, practical stuff I have been able to use immediately to save myself hassles and wasted time/motion/effort.I highly recommend to all physicians the section on how to leverage your relationships to produce more, and also the section on continuing education, which was an eye-opener for me.I personally feel that every practicing physician should have a copy of this book,and use what's in it.Get this book today-it will work for you.

Fantastic Book!!!
I am taking the CMA exam this month and have my Associates Degree in the field. I borrowed this book ftom a student who started school before I did. The text book we had was not near as informative! This text has everything you need to know! I am purchasing it for my own reference because it was so helpful. I highly recommend this book to all Medical Assistants!

BIG FAT SCAM
I'd give this book negative five stars if I could. Save your self a lot of money, don't buy this book, don't take this class! The medical assistant technician programs are all a complete scam created by tech schools to make lots of money off unsuspecting students. I see about thirty commercials everyday boasting about how hot the medical field is right now and how easy it is to get a job. According to the commercials "The Hospitals and Nursing homes are understaffed and are just hiring people like crazy." None of this is true. I am a licensed C.N.A. and have a degree as a medical assistant.I would literally sell it for twenty dollars right now. My degree is worthless. I've kept in contact with almost every student I graduated with and most of them have given up looking for employment as a medical assistant. I have applied for at least fifty jobs so far. Out of those application I've been asked to do two interviews.
Excellent Book!
This book is excellent if you or anybody you know that is in the field ortraining to be a Medical Assistant. I am currently in the program at mylocal community college and love this textbook. Absolutely essential for introductory students in health occ
I have used this book since the first edition and wanted to kick myself when it came out for not publishing my curriculum and lesson plans at the time. Health Occupations was a new vocational course and most of us had towrite our own material. When Louise Simmers published DHO, we all knewinstantly that she had the best resource on the market. It stands up overtime and each new edition keeps my students current and relevent in thechanging world of health care. Kill us with how terribly clever you as, Oscar.
I am obviously out of step with the opinions of the other readers.I am in the medical field, and this may affect how I view this book ( although I ADORED House of God).I felt like the author wrote this book so he could admire how very clever he was, like a vain person who is always checking him/herself out in the store windows when walking by.Just to smug.

World's Best Doctor
A very quick read, filled with short, humorous essays on how to become the world's best doctor (after the author, Oscar London, dies, because he currently considers himself the world's best doctor.)

Greatly Reduces Anxiety in New Professionals
I found this book to greatly reduce my anxiety as it addressed all of my worries and other issues that were leading me towards burnout.It also has clear indications that it will continue to be useful as I move further into my career.This is a book I plan to read again and again.

An exellent and a must read book
I participitated in the match last year and got 7 interviews(attended 6), but unfortunately didn't match due to lack of experience and inadequate preparation. When I read "The Residency match", noticed, the several mistakes that I made about my CV, personal statement and during my interviews were completely avoidable by following Dr Desai's recommendations. I believe he has done a wonderful job, I woud have memorized the book word by word if I had seen it before my interviews. I would rate this book 5+ Stars with no doubt.

Waist of money
There is a reason this book is cheap. It is not the size (although it is tiny and thin). This is bok is basically a very basic checklist for preparing for MATCH. There is nothing about HOW to avoid the misytakes etc. It is just a marketing gimmic.

Oliver Sacks he ain't
This book was mediocre. The stories are not really atypical for anyone in the medical field. To write a good medical book, someone needs to have had an amazing career, really love medicine, have spent time in an obscure field, have an innovative spin, or be an excellent writer. Unfortunately, Vertosick brought none of these to this book.
Fascinating, strange and touching
The history of neurosurgery is a fascinating one, however, even more interesting is to see how it has developed over the last century since, for example, the legendary Dr. Harvey Cushing forged the techniques of brain surgery over seventy years ago. `When the Air Hits Your Brain - Tales of Neurosurgery' is a compelling collection of tales written with erudition and sensitivity with at times gruesome detail of brain operations that sometimes were successful and other times not. As Dr. Vertosick proposes in his introduction, that, for the most part, a surgeon learns more from the failures than the successes; therefore most of the stories within are tragedies - failures that paved the way to future successes. For those interested in the world of neurosurgery, this book should more than satisfy as it covers a vast array of different cases as well as the general ambience and culture of this very specialized profession.
Vivid description of a neurosurgeon!
I'm a neurosurgeon myself.I'm still so moved by the stories told by the author.They reflected the true life in my daily practice and circumstances.They seems funny but actually sad inside, filled with sorrow and tears of both the patients and doctors. GREAT PRACTICE
I've worked with Dr. Amal Mattu in the ER here at University of Maryland, and let me tell you his EKG rounds are always excellent learning experiences be they at 2AM or noon. The same can be said of the book. As a resident in Internal Medicine I always want to look at more EKGs and this book is aimed at the professional who wants to see good examples of the common EKG findings, and also the rarer things such as Brugada syndrome. Scary and Wonderful
I'm thinking about going to medical school, and this book was recommended to me to get a flavor for what life is like as a medical student - particularly a slightly older, female, non-traditional student.
Worth your time

excellent overview
As a physician I have referenced many books on laboratory medicine. This is by far one of the best for providing a concise,understandable, and more importantly, practical means of understanding laboratory tests and their clinical relevance.

Must Read
This book was very helpful to me.It helped make up my mind about what career path to pursue.The authors give insight into the history and future of the PA profession.They give numerous charts and graphs showing statistics on the PA profession as compared to other professions.Iespecially found it helpful that they compared the Nurse Practitioner tothe Physician Assistant, which are two very closely related professions. Before having read this book, I was pretty sure I wanted to become a PA. After reading the book, I further considered the possibility of the NPcareer.The book definitely is a must read for prospective PA's.I don'tthink that it would be as enjoyable for current PA's or current PA studentsthough.The information is a bit outdated as far as how many PA programsare accredited as of today and so on but that's to be expected.However,overall, I do recommend this book very much.
