Poorly written and politically correct.
Having a background in medicine, I am very disappointed. This book can be confusing and does not accurately or properly deal with serious health issues of the day. While subtle, it gives a free pass to destructive activities in the name of not offending while ignoring studies that show clearly show fatalities resulting from destructive life styles and beliefs. In my opinion, it gives the field of medicine a black eye and can't help but prompt the educated reader to question the validity of the writers. It is poorly written. Not the type of book I would recommend to my students or residents.

Extremely helpfull manual. Goes into detail regarding many subjects, easy to read for a layman.

A little bit of PR from Merck but still helpful ....
Despite its latest problems, Merck still dominates the drug market along with the other biggies.The vast majority of its drugs are effective and perfectly safe - though not without risk factors.As such, it is useful for patients to understand exactly what those drugs are, what they do, what dangers are present.This book will help patients understand.To a large degree what is contained in these pages are all present in package inserts but there is also a good deal of addtional information.It can be helpful and anything that helps one attain better health is worth a few bucks! ... Helpful reference
I was required to have this book for my Medical Terminology class. I found the set up to work well. The "homework" at the end of each chapter really helped me remember what I learned the chapters. I think it could have been more detailed on the diseases etc. But a pretty good book which I will continue to use as a reference.

Great system for learning terminology quickly
I am a midwifery student and I needed to learn medical terminology. This book is set up like a workbook. You can fill it in as you go. By filling in the blanks, making up flash cards, and taking the quizzes, I was able to learn a lot of medical terminology in a short amount of time. Much of the terminology in medicine is very logical, using root words, suffixes and prefixes. If you learn these, you can figure out the meaning of a lot of medical terms. Filling in blanks (especially when a lot of the answers are obvious) may seem redundant and like busy work, but by using more modalities for your learning process (auditory as you listen to the cd's, visual as you read, tactile as you write), you learn it so much more quickly and easily. There were some typos in the book and a few frames that were written incorrectly or in a confusing manner but not many. If you pay attention, you will catch them. I would advise the editors to do a better proofreading job in the next edition. This book is totally worth it if you are just starting out in the medical field. It is basic terminology but it will give you a great start. The book also covers some pathological, diagnostic, and therapeutic terms, as well as a section where you can practice reading sample medical records. Make sure you buy a book that is not filled in so you can fill it in yourself and get the most out of it.

Excellent- a masterpiece
This book has truly vastly surpassed my expectations. It has several indexes- one comprehensive index, one for drugs, one for nutrients and the drugs that affect them, monographs on all the nutrients, and then the piece de resistance, the abstracts of the medical literature to back it all up. Very helpful study guide
Of the several books I own on surgical instrumentation, this one has the most clear and useful pictures of the instruments.The spiral binding is student-friendly and the info on each picture is a helpful study guide.I would recommend this book to anyone trying to learn their instruments.
