Classic, gold standard
There is only one Hoppenfeld.For what it is, it's the best.It's all diagnosis.Not a word on treatment.But it gives a good review of not just the physical exam but also the underlying anatomy and biomechanics.Two other books are worth getting.Magee's Orthopedic Physical Assessment is a good background book to have on your shelf.It's written by a physical therapist, so the perspective is a little different if you're an MD or DO, but it's still useful.Lots of physical exam maneuvers.Cooper's Pocket Guide to Musculoskeletal Diagnosis is short and sweet and gives diagnostic work up as well as treatment insights.

The View of a Medical Oncologist
In my oncology practice, patients will often bring me articles or books on "alternative" medical therapies.I try to approach all of them with an open mind.One of the best chemotherapy agents ever developed is derived from the bark of the Pacific Yew tree.You never know where the next advance in medicine will come from.I tell my patients that I divide alternative medicines into three categories: known to help, known to harm, and not enough evidence to say one way or the other.
Excellent Book and very well detailed
I read a lot of comments here on Amazon about this book. I see very negative viewpoints. I take it that these negative viewpoints come from people who are extremely closed minded and stick with the "medical" viewpoint about cancer and such.
Adding selenium helps fight cancer
I have great respect for Dr. Clark and her cancer fighting program. However, I feel it is important to add that the nutrient selenium is also important in fighting cancer. This was demonstrated dramatically in a large placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical study -- the most prestigious type of scientific study of nutrients and drugs -- which showed that people taking 200 micrograms (mcg) of selenium daily had only half the death rate from cancer as those given a placebo which did not contain selenium.

good for IM residents
The only weakness is that there's no machanism of the meds.

Excellent pocket drug dosage reference
I am a resident physician and I find this book indispensable. It is the best reference for carrying in your pocket in order to look up drug doses. It has some other useful information such as pregnancy category, brand names, relative cost, peds dosing and other small but useful features. Nice index. I use this book several times a day every day (well, every work day), and it is the one book I make sure is always in my pocket. I use the classic T-shirt edition - it fits in the top pocket of my lab coat so nicely.

I use ePocrates for most of my minute to minute drug referencing but tarascon still has good information, especially less common brand names for common drugs and also very convenient other stuff like the dermatome diagrams. ... Read more

A Nurses Best Friend
While working as an office RN I am often asked by a patient questions about the "new" medication they are on.This book provides the answers.It's easy to read, each drug is broken into quick to find sections and it is very up-to-date.Don't practice nursing without this book!

Great contents, but
Bid a new set from ebay and it arrived in two boxes. It has great contents, but:
Finest compilation of the writings of the most brilliant minds over the centuries past ever
These books were first published in 1952.Only 500 sets were published that year, a Private Library Collection it was called, and sold for $500.00 per set.My father was one of the original purchasers, and he passed them down to me when he died.(It's still even in its original custom made bookcase!)
Cost effective when you consider your options...
Regardless of minor squabbling over what should and shouldn't be included, this is a very good collection of western works. I'd call it great in fact, when you consider the amount you'd have to pay to purchase all these seperate, not to mention all the wading you'd do through some not-so-necessary reads.

Excellent, comprehensive,and easy to use
The Manual is a complete guide to the AMA style and also an excellent grammar book.The topics are easy to find and the tables and lists are comprehensive.It is a great companion to The Chicago Manual of Style because it details the grammar preferred by the AMA and contains needed terminology.This is a necessary reference for medical publications proofreaders and editors.

A style manual you will rarely close
The specific goal of the American Medical Association Manual of Style: A Guide for Authors and Editors is to codify and collect the myriad instructions, rules, and dictums that AMA applies to the many journals, books, and other publications that are printed under its imprint. Always Exceptional

Dorland's is my fave!
I have the current edition (30th) and I absolutely love it! Another plus is you are given a code to be able access their online dictionary as well!It's a great book with great illustrations as well. From what I can see it is very thorough. If you work in an ER or assessment setting...
I used this booklet as a quick reference in my work in a hospital ER and in doing intakes.It's meant to simply be a handy reference to the DSM criteria, and can't replace the study, consultation, and experience needed to understand the difference between clinically problematic and non-problematic behavior.If you work within the DSM/ICD/insurance system, and you've heard the phrase "justify your diagnosis" before, here's an invaluable and pocket-sized (well, for a big pocket) tool.

The Only DSM That You Need
This is a modest little book that you can fit into your pocket but it does everything that its big brother(the much more expensive, full version of the DSM IV-TR) does -- at half the price and with greater ease of use. While the unabridged DSM IV is pretty much a textbook of psychiatry, minus only treatment recommendations, this abridgement unpretentiously lists just the diagnostic categories and the relevent (concisely phrased) criteria. Professionals will find it a handy source of symptoms and diagnosis for insurance purposes. Non-professionals will find it usable for the purpose of diagnosing themselves, their spouse, their parents and problematic friends.

A Great Manual To Promote Mental Disorders !!!
The DSM IV-TR is a great book to promote diseases that fit the armaments of medications that the pharmaceutical companies would like physicians to use.

This book is perfect for the scrub who wants to take every case but doesn't have the experience or just needs a brush-up.Even my instructors (both first-assists) recommended this book as a must-have.

Wonderful Book!!!
This book is excellent for all the new surgical technologists and ST students out there! This book lays it down in simple, almost layman-like terms but is very thorough. Everythng you need to prepare for a case you have never done is in this book. I cannot say enough about how greatly helpful this book is! It has gotten me through alot of stressful situations! If you read this book the night before or right before a case the MD will think you are the greatest thing since sliced bread because it really tells you EVERYTHING you need to know! pretty good
very short book....takes about 5-6 hours to read...the CD forget it...its crap...so hard to use and unclear...and if your using this book for USMLE 1, the CD is useless...but the text will help consolidate some of the facts in FIRST AID...the depth of the material is appropriate for usmle 1...over all its a good inexpensive book...and cleared up a lot of stuff i ddin't understand in my neuro course....

Not so ridiculously simple for those without a background
I do have a science background, but nothing specifically in neuroanatomy. The book cover and title seem to indicate that this book should be entertaining and "easy" to read. This book is not a cartoon book designed to stimulate memory and is definitely not simple or basic. I am sorry to say this but the line drawings are not the greatest quality. I think it is targeted to med students or doctors who need a very compact clinical symptom reference or a quick refresher but know neuroanatomy. Keep searching if you need an true introduction to neuroanatomy.

Essential for Medical Students
This skinny text is one of the few books that all medical students can read and benefit from. When I took neuroanatomy, it was regarded as the most difficult course in our first-year curriculum. Having read this book early in the course, and referring back to it several times, I got off to a great start. It won't tell you eveything you need to know, nor in the depth you'll need to know it. Not quite what I expected
Zollinger's features very good illustrations and notes (including postoperative care) for nearly every imaginable procedure in gastrointestinal surgery (including exotic and complex operations such as total pancreatectomy and Klatskin tumor resections), short of bariatric surgery. Truely one of the most successful books of the kind, the strucure is well designed, the operations included cover a eide range of procedures, and most noticeble is the very high quality of the explanatory figures, sometimes by just brawsing through them you get 80% of what to do... the text is well written and concise. You will find many approaches for each operation. of course it will be impossible to gather all the surgical craft in one book. but this one succeeds in collecting a large chunk of it. i highly recommend it for all juniors and postgrads alike. ... I got the book for my ICU rotation, its a easy read. Goes over the imp stuff and the basics too. Liked it a lot.

Too little details in places (mechanical ventilation) but too wordy in others.Excellent cardiopulmonary phys review, good breadth of subjects.Kinda big book but fast reading.

This book is rare because it is original. It welcomes you to the real world of critical care as seen by one expert physician. It was probably never intended for quick reference or board prep. Excellent book - But it could use a "cosmetic" update
Good subject coverage, knowledgeable author, and plenty of uncluttered figures makes this book very worthwhile.The only thing missing from this excellent book is an update.Although this is the third edition (1998),almost all of the equipment photographs are from the early-to-mid 1970's. An extensive and broad Suggested Reading section follows most chapters butagain far far too many references are to early 1970's books and manuals. An update could earn this book a 5+ rating. ... Handy book
I purchased this book to back me up in my clinical year instead of carrying the big and great Tintinalli's "Emergency Med."I think this little version does a good job in giving a concise information on emergency medicine.

Good for rounds
Great resource to have when making rounds. Didn't seem as indepth as I would like it to be in some places.Good refresher kind of book, with other resources handy for more indepth information.

Great Tool for a ER rotation
So far, the Emergency Medicine Manual has been a great asset to have while doing my ER rotation. It fits conveniently into my coat pocket and after seeing a patient, I can quickly read up on whatever I suspect is main diagnosis, and therefore appear smart when I am being pimped by a resident or an attending.
