Just a good book..
This book is a good one, but has one little problem, the book doesn't have much coherence because there are too many people writting the book. You can note the difference of redaction between the chapters because were written for different person and that's what make the book very difficult to read, because one chapters are good, but others are very bad.
Clarification about the edition
This is the 10th edition, published in 2001. Not quite as 'out-of-date' as suggested by the previous reviewer. It is, however, dificult to keep these texts current.

Good....but out of date!
"Goodman & Gilman" has been the staple of pharmacology for many years, and with good reason. While I agree with the other reviewers that it is the gold standard, in the "old days" the book was updated about every 5 years, and this one came out in 1996. Given that the book probably took a couple of years to revise, the information is close to 10 years out of date! As is stated in the Notice on p. xviii, "Medicine is an ever-changing science." I love the way the drugs are categorized !!!
The reason why I bought this book was because it was organized by the medications purposes, so all the cardiovascular medications were put together, CNS drugs, etc. ... Then within these categories subcategories (i.e. antihypertensive drugs, anticovulsant drugs, etc.) were grouped. Also, the generic names are in bright red and the brand names listed directly underneath in black. It just makes it so much easier and convenient for me to find the medications I am looking for! Good Book
The book gives details on every food group for your blood type.You can look at all four blood types at a glance in the charts given.I just wish there was more information about how to tell if you were a non-secretor or a secretor.Otherwise, good book to have in your library.The husband and I have changed our eating to be according to our blood type as suggested, and within two weeks we could both feel a difference.More energy, less bloating or indigestion.It's a good book!

Physical Results May Vary!
I was considering adopting a vegitarian diet due to my many health problems and my mother told me about this book and the benefits her friends have had. So I bought the book and the information was quite facinating. It was like reading my physical autobiography, so I started the diet and I've been on it for 4 weeks and I have had no weight loss. Why..I don't know, but my energy levels have dropped significantly although I must say that my overall shape has changed. It appears that either I'm toning or I'm loosing muscle mass. The books were an easy read, but the thing I find most confusing is this concept of using herbs for ailments and overal health, there are sooooo many herbs out there for every kind of physical issue good or bad and I'm confused as to just how many pills can one person take?! I want to buy the right kind of vitamins and minerals for my body, but even on the website there are 5 or more kinds of pills that I should take, not to mention the shakes, bars and extra health meds that they recommend. I'm sorry to say that I have learned why I am sensitive to certain foods and why I've gained weight, but as to how to fix the problem, there seem to be too many pills and sometimes conflicting pieces of advice. In all, I'm more confused than I was when I was in the dark. So to all of you who have been successful with this diet, BRAVO to you, but for those of you who have bodies that are far more complex than diets and "all natural" foods, I feel you and maybe we'll find the REAL solution someday together.

it was okay
I bought the book thinking that it would help me learn how to eat for my blood type but I find it very difficult to follow and difficult to read it. This is more like an index for health problems and if you are susseptible to them by what your blood type is. ... Read more

Tarascon Pockect Pharmacopoeia
This book is the best source of consultation for Pharmacists, because it gives a complete an easy information about every thing that we need in our daily duties.

Excellent.
Despite having epocrates on my PDA, I still found this book to be very useful. I had used the small version for years, throughout medical school, but during my internship I purchased the larger version with the plastic cover.Having used both, I would say I actually prefer the larger one as the extra information it contains is useful and pertinent, especially for those taking care of inpatients. Its nice to have some extra info regarding side effects, dosage forms, generic vs brand, etc.
Tarascon's Deluxe Lab coat pharmacopeia
This is the third Tarascon's book I've had and I must say they are fantastic little reference books to have in your lab coat.This one is bigger than the pocket pharm, but it still fits in your side lab coat pocket. And this one comes with a plastic cover. The only improvement I would suggest is that Tarascon's adds contraindications. Excellent but a little too big
I found out about this book my second month as an intern. I wish I had known about it when I was a med student. It has basic review of disease processes, lab interpretation, procedures, and a drug reference. The procedure descriptions and illustrations are probably the best of any reference I have seen. The only problem is that it's a little too big to use as a pocket reference. I keep it in my on-call bag.

just a bit too big
I really have found this book useful, but it will weigh you down and hurt your aerodynamics.I liked the sections on labs and differentials as a 3rd year, and found the procedure walkthroughs to be useful as a 4th year.For residency I plan to go completely with the PDA.

Very helpfull for the National Exam
This book helped a lot when I was studying for the Vet Tech national boards.There were some repeat questions but that wasn't a problem.The questions got you thinking and some of the questions in the book were on the board test.

A Wonderful Study Tool for Vet Techs AND Instructors!
I used the second edition book back when I took (and aced) the VTNE for my Oregon certification. Let me also state that I "grandfathered in" as a Certified Veterinary Technician, meaning that what I knew, I'd picked up along the many years working in the field, as opposed to a formal academic environment.Years later,I used the 3rd edition for the California State Board Exam.The tests are similar enough that I passed the latter with flying colors (after all, the science is the same, regardless of geography!)I owe much of the success in both cases to the Colville guide.
Review Questions and Answers for Veterinary Technicians
I used this text to study for my national boards two years ago and recommend to all of the students I encounter. It's a great way to test yourself before you take the exam. I purchased it about 6 weeks prior to. Each section gives you multiple choice questions about the knowledge you have already obtained. You can then grade yourself on the sections and see what weak areas you may need to "touch up on" before you test. It's well worth the money. I passed the exam, and felt it prepared me. ... Eighty Bucks? From a Geek?
Overpriced and too techno-geeky. Juiceheads out here are looking for information that is of practical use and not medical encyclopedias. And who you gonna trust for that kind of info? A technocrat who has no real world dirt under his fingernails, or someone who has Been There and Done That? As THE Man said, "If you write a book on steroids, at least look like you can pick up the book without straining a muscle!" Buy THE ultimate reference book as authored by THE man who knows this stuff and save yourself half the money on top of it. That book is the one authored by Anthony Roberts. Pocket guide?
My main gripe with this book is that it's hardly portable. It's pocket sized- if you're a kangaroo...and kangaroos are NOT allowed in the radiology department!

Very GOOD pocket Guide
"Pocket Guide to Radiography" served as one of my references for the ARRT examination along with "The Ultimate Study Guide for the Registry Examination in Radiography: Key Review Questions and answers." "Pocket Guide to Radiography" had all the information for the positioning portion of the test.The central ray, part position, and patient position are always described in a very descriptive but easy to comprehend fashion.The pictures are great and easy to follow.For awesome practice questions for the ARRT Examination, I also found "The Ultimate Study Guide for the Registry Examination in Radiography: Key Review Questions and Answers" to be a wonderful reference.These books helped me to pass the ARRT the 1st time I took it.For quick look-up of medical terms, I also found "Dorland's Pocket Medical Dictionary Book" quite practical and also excellent. ... Excellent reference for herbal medicines
Being a licensed practitioner of Chinese medicine here in the US, I purchased the PDR for Herbal Medicines, 3rd ed. because I wanted to have access to western scientific resource material about the many (about 700) herbal medicinals covered in the volume. If you're looking for a good clinical or diagnostic manual for learning how to prescribe herbal medicinals, this book, by no means, articulates how to actually effectively prescribe herbal medicines properly. In order to prescribe herbal medicines safely and effectively, they must be applied according to a diagnostic pattern discrimination methodology that is suitable for each patient's constitution, clinical presentation and pathological disease situation. All that said, however, the book is an excellent resource for information about known scientific research, references to other source materials as well as pharmacological, chemical, toxicological cautions and contraindications for each herb covered in the volume. In fact, for this kind of information, the text is hard to beat. No one should use or prescribe a medicinal that they do not know the possible side effects and toxicity potential for that particular plant material. Although some naive individuals believe that all medicinal plants are safe to use, in fact, some herbal substances are toxic, contraindicated during pregnancy, should only be used for a short period of time, etc. This book has explicit information that is consistent with many of the best herbal medicine text books that I own. The book even has ratings by the well known German 'Commission E' board that approves herbal medicines in Europe for professional use. And if that isn't enough, many Chinese and Ayurvedic medicinals are also covered. There is also a section that covers many nutritional supplements on the market as well. All in all, I highly recommend the book to those who want detailed identification, dosage, usage, pharmacological and toxicological reference material for a large number of useful plant medicinal substances. This is a great book to fill in the blanks that many other reference texts simply do not cover.

A thorough and useful reference
The PDR for Herbal Medicines is an excellent, thorough and scientific resource that will prove invaluable to physicians, nurse practitioners, naturopaths and others who use botanicals in the clinical setting.Also important for physicians who want to make sure that patients self-medicating with herbs are doing so safely.The various indexes make it easy to access vital facts rapidly.
Buyers beware on this one.

Convoluted and confusing
This book is not the best as a textbook. Might be useful as a refresher or reference, but that's not what I had to use it for. It is wordy and is sometimes too detailed and sometimes not enough. It has no consistency, thanks to numerous authors. Also, the material is often outdated. Time to look for a different book.

Seeing it from clinical engineer eyes is different than seeing it from a biomedical engineer eyes; however, it is not as thoroughly covers topics as it seems from the author's repetition in the field.
Electronic Medical Instrumentation
As a coursebook, I found 'Medical Instrumentation' to be a sound survey of electrical medical diagnostic instrumentation.The book does review electrical therapeutic medical instrumentation; however, it's coverage is not as thorough.Read more

A godsend for the medical student, and resident
Maxwell's Quick reference is the best little book to have as a medical student. Everybody in my class had one. Helpful with ACLS and EKGs, Lab values and equations, how to write orders and dictate/write notes and how to do H & P's . Also includes OBGYN and developmental milestones for pediatrics.To top it off it has a great neurology section with charts and nerological exam helpers, including the mini-mental status, which is handy for psychiatry as well.On the back is an Eye chart.Included are several blank pages for note taking.Mine are filled up now that I am almost through residency. Fun to look back at what I wrote as a student. But, this book was a savior then, and it is still helpful now. Get it, its cheap and handy.

A no brainer, must have for medical students and residents
I picked this book up prior to day one of clinicals in medical school.Now 5 years later in residency I still refer to it on a regular basis.This is color coordinated and easy to follow sections on conversions, common normal lab values, progress notes, discharge summaries, H&P's, OP notes, Mini Mental Status exams, and neuro exams plus many more tidbits.I picked this up for 7 dollars at my bookstore, saved me many times at 2am on call.Get this, it will help you on all services.A gold standard of easy reference.
