What a fun book!
I admit I thought it would be Christian in nature, and realized it was spirituality in general.However, it did provide some much sought-after information in the second half of the book on midwifery.I learned quite a bit of what I know about birth from this book.I must say it took strength getting past the less-than-medical terminology, but what I learned was invaluable.I think the birth story about the woman who got stuck at 8cm and the midwife discovered she was emotionally stuck due to the fact that her husband had never articulated that he loved her out loud, well that was so touching to read.She went on to deliver after midwives left the room and he, for the first time, said "I love you."What wisdom, and it changed my outlook on delivery completely from a medical event, to an emotional, and yes, spiritual event.Since that time, I have grown in my own faith, yet am indebted to this book! A worthwhile read for aspiring childbirth professionals as well as pregnant mommas!
Inspiring Natural Childbirth Book
I'll admit it took me a while to get over the way that Ina May and others in this book speak.At first I found it distracting, but once I got into the mentality of The Farm, I found this book very inspiring.It contains a lot of very detailed information on anatomy and the practice of midwifery, but the best part is the stories.This book is packed full of real-life accounts of natural births- some good, some bad, but all amazing.When I finished, I felt empowered to give birth naturally and able to take control of my own pregnancy and labor.I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is considering natural childbirth.

Puh-lease . . .felt like was I reading an erotic novel
First, I am a very open-minded person, raised by a hippy/Biker family.I really expected to identify with this book.While I appreciate the what Ina May's movement accomplished during its time, I felt like the book was almost a joke--verging more on detailing accounts of an occult community--A community of people living on old school buses in the woods, delivering each other's babies.

Great information

You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book

Massive but Limited
If all you want is the patient information often handed out by drug stores, this is the book for you -- it covers almost all the prescription drugs on the market.

Beware of CD-ROM
This series of books have been very helpful in my practice.I currently use the 6th edition.I was excited that the Spanish translation for handouts is included on the CD-ROM.However, there is one crucial difference:With the 6th edition the contents can be INSTALLED on your computer (and the CD then stored). Then topics can be searched and printed per PDF files/Acrobat reader.In the 6th edition, each topic print out is ONE page.HOWEVER, with the 7th edition, the CD-ROM MUST BE in the cd drive to work.This ties up that drive and is very inconvenient in a busy practice, if you have other uses for that drive.In the 7th edition, the printouts can be THREE pages long, consuming much more paper! ... Don't Buy This Edition.Get the New One.
Get the third edition of this book, also available from Amazon.com, It was due to be published on May 30, 2005.I have it on order and am surprised to see that the old edition is still so highly touted on this web site.

Great Textbook for Medical Transcriptionists!
This was the required text for my second subject in Medical Transcription.It was very good and detailed enough for the beginning transcriptionist to understand where everything is, and to familiarize yourself with more medical terminology.This one seems to assume you already have a beginning foundation in basic medical terminology and how to form medical words using word parts, combining forms, suffixes, and prefixes.I say this because the first chapter immediately launches into a LOT of these word parts with very little discussion on what they are, how to do them, etc. The book has a detailed glossary of medical words, though, and it has these little cardboard cutouts that look like miniature index cards (flash cards) that will aid you in memorizing basic word parts.The book has very long and detailed exercises at the end of each chapter that builds on what you have already learned and strengthens your medical terminology foundation.It also comes with a CD-ROM that has exercises relevant to each chapter.WHen you complete a chapter exercise, the software evaluates your performance and tells you where your mistakes are, then prints out a study plan for you where you can bone up and read about your mistakes.An over-all good book! ... A Superb Staple in the ophthalmic world!
I have personally used this resource for the past 20 years and it remains one of the "must haves" for clinical research coordinators who are trained through Ophthalmic Research Training Services.
Excellent resource
I use this dictionary often in my work as a teacher of the visually impaired. It's a quick reference for reading eye medical reports which may have unfamiliar terminology. Parents also appreciate a copy of the page which refers to their child's disease or problem

Excellent overview
This second edition of Shortliffe's textbook is an excellent overview of the field. Although I used it as a course text, it is extremely readable. The chapters are not overly technical, as befits an introductory text, but by no means is this a "Dummmies" book either. Read more

Out of Date?
This five year old PDR Family Guide to Nutritional Supplements, first edition, Dec. 2001, is an excellent consise book and easy to read. However it is out of date when compared with PDR Health on-line. To get started this book is good. To get the latest information from PDR one has to go on-line and combining the two can be confusing. I'll not order until the second edition is released.

I use it in my healing practice, and nursing practice
Note:First of all, there are 2 natural remedy PDRs, one for Nutritional rRemedies and Supplements, and another specifically for Herbal Remedies.You will NOT find herbal info in the nutritional PDR, nor nutritional supplements in the Herbal PDR.

My close friend who is one of the nicest person I ever met, recommended me this book. Upon opening the first chapter, I already know that this book is amazing. My writing improves a lot. If you are an international student like me, you might also have hard time on writing as well. I guaranteed that this book is really invaluable.

Very good book, examples used bit too technical
Very good book for beginners and experienced researchers! I haven't come across any other book that actually describes how you should write a biomedical paper. The only critique is that the examples used are too technical for non-biomedical researchers, this makes it hard to understand the examples. But even if you do not have a biomedical background you will learn a lot from this book.

Excellent Resource

outstanding
Neil Baum's book contains the sum of all other advice that I had ever heard before I bought it and I was surprised how much more it contains. No wonder nobody recommended it to me. Every resident should receive it as a graduation gift from her or his program director. It is an absolut must for private practice. Consultants are not going to tell you more than what you will read in this book, they just charge you 20 times as much. The single most valuable book for marketing your own practice.

Ok, but not the best.
I used this book while on my Fam med rotation during 3rd year of medical school.At the time, there were not many books designed for medical students specifically on FP.The was no First Aid or Blueprints Family Medicine book for example.
excellent, best source for family shelf
Just use this and your set. I had a 4 week rotation in fam med & had not yet had, ob/gyn, peds or IM, but I did well using this text. I only got through half of the text, but did that the night before. I only wish I'd got it sooner.

Questions and Answers
Oodles of questions and explained answers, and it comes highly recommended by my fellow classmates who used it to study for the national shelf exams.(I used Swanson's Family Practice Review and loved it.) I used NMS to a degree but didn't get through all of it.The questions are usually high yield and well explained. One classmate specifically said that this was the only book he used for Family and he aced the exam.I guess that's a pretty good review.See my listmania list for more med school ideas. ... Read more
