Disappointing
Thought this book included the CDs. . .it appears you can't get the complete set anywhere, even from the publisher. Sorry, but reading pronunciations in a book just doesn't cut it.

This book is great.I had some basic knowledge in Spanish, but forget it since high school.This book made it easy to catch back on, and explains Spanish for a new learner.Not only does it go into common medical dialogues, with descriptive, or yes/no answers, but also teaches basic verbs, nouns, and conjugations of the verbs.The pictures dont have Spanish/English captions, only Spanish, but there is a guide in the back.This book will teach you everything you need, and then some.If you are looking for a book, this is the one.

I actually bought the 3 cd package written by the same authors called: 'spanish for family practitioners" for $23. Inside is this book, Complete Medical Spanish : A Practical Course for Quick and Confident Communication. I'd actually recommend getting the ones w/ 3 audio cd's since the vocabulary and dialogue is on cd and u could go around listening to it on the car. I had hs spanish so this book isn't too hard.

Essential for students and residents on psychiatry rotations.
This is one book you need to have in your pockets for learning on rounds, and for 3 am fogginess on call.This book gives quick reference to most of the psychiatric drugs you will need, as well as common side effects, conversion/equivelency tables for benzodiazapines, and antipsychotics.As other reviews state, pair this with Psychiatry, 2006 Edition by Rhoda K., M.D. Hahn for around 10 dollars also, and your psyciatry rotations should look a lot easier.A good investment

This is a great companion book to Kahn's pocket psychiatry book. This book covers many of the psychiatric medications, interactions, side effects, and indications.At 3 in the morning, this book is a godsend for starting or stoping meds.Get the little green pocket psychiatry book, and you have the dynamic duo of psych residents.And, this book is affordable, is their anything else you could hope for.As a bonus, this book has some excellent tables, including those equivalency tables for benzodiazepines and antipsychotics.well worth the 10 bucks

okay study book
This question book is an okay review of subjects if you perfer a Q/A format way of learning.However, the question format and style of questions are not similar to the USMLE Step 3.There are few Negative questions (eg. all of the following except) in the USMLE Step 3 and at the most, there are 3 questions following a passage (In NMS, there can be up to 6-7 questions following a passage).I found the NMS review to be too detailed (like questions we see in Step 1 and 2- eg) indirect inguinal hernias are medial to what structure.....)
Great review book....
I'll admit, I made a mistake.I decided to hold off taking Step 3 until two months before my pediatric residency was finished.Back then, it wasn't required to maintain your residency in this state.So you can imagine, after nearly 3 years of pediatric medicine, how far removed I was from a lot of adult medical issues.I used two books, this one and "Crush step 3."Both were definitely helpful, but I felt this one by far helped me the most.Sure the question formats are not exactly like the real test.But Q and A style studying tends to make me retain the information much better than just passive reading.The explanations are quite thorough and the difficulty of the questions were just about the same for the real test.NMS has always been good to me when taking the previous two steps of the USMLE, and they didn't let me down with step 3. ... Disappointing book really bad
This is a very bad medical dictionary. It has a huge lack of medical terminology, everytime I need to traslate something I never find it in this "medical" dictionary ... so I go to a normal non-medical dictionary and often I find it ... hilarious.

Taschen, Fat Possum, Criterion: These Guys Have All My Money
I don't have any particular interest in anatomy, although I do like to do a little of my own research when some body part is misbehaving.This massive book will certainly assist in the future...it has to be the gold-standard of anatomy books.And Taschen has done yet another magnificent job producing one of these major historic works.Folks, this book is staggering, in both size and quality.It is HUGE (perhaps four times the size of an average "coffee-table book") and heavy and beautifully produced: Cloth-bound cover, incredible paper quality, magnificent color reproduction...and enormous scope.Page after page of....well, blood and guts, assorted organs, skeletons, bones and skulls.

I was a believer in First Aid and Blue Prints books that I used for steps 1 and 2.There was no Step 3 First Aid at the time and so I tried this book.This turned out to be an excellent book for step 3 review.It covered the topics sufficiently for adequate review.I used this book in conjunction with "Boards and Wards" and worked questions in the NMS step 3 books as well as the kaplan q-bank.That works.Most say that it is not necessary to spend much time studying for step 3.This is true, but you do need to study some.This book reads quickly and the information is high yield.I highly recommend it and hope that new editions are released over the years. ... Worth every penny!
My wife bought this book for me, and it was a Godsend.Chapter lessons are bite sized and arranged in logical/relational order; interpersonal phrases, cultural issues, admission, discharge, fundamental anatomy, hygiene issues, medication issue, etc.

Inadequate
I have been a transcriptionist for three-plus years, and I have owned this book for all that time.I honestly cannot recall a single time this book has been helpful.It is a small volume, for a medical word book, being about the size of a thick popular paperback novel, which is wholly inadequate for the monstrously huge field of medical words. Fabulous for newbies to med trans!
When I first started transcribing in 1980, the first edition of this book was my bible. When I was lost in a black hole of unintelligible doctor-mumble, being able to narrow the terms down to groups of specialties saved the day for me. Now, after 23 years as an acute care MT, I teach full time at a community college and I require this book for my transcription students. Ellen Drake's meticulous edits and additions have at least quadrupled the page count and made it a trustworthy reference. I must admit, though, that as an experienced MT, it would not be the first book I pulled off my shelf when stuck on a word now. Now I usually firstturn to the latest edition of Stedman's, the Drakes' latest pharmaceutical reference, or to a word book with extensive terms in a particular specialty. That's because the Medical Word Book is more like a text version of an experienced MT's brain. So I probably wouldn't recommend this for an "old" MT like me -- but newbies will LOVE it.

Scientific Writing - A difficult task made easier
"Successful Scientific Writing" is a well written, user friendly and sometimes humorous guide to effective scientific writing. Even the wire, lay open binding is user friendly. The text is up to date, well organized and provides guidance on effective use of computers and software in the entire scientific endeavor.Of course the primary strength is in helping the reader through the writing and publication of the scientist's efforts. This concise work would be especially appropriate as a text in scientific writing classes.The exercises provided would be great student assignments. Additionally the exercises are fun and enhance points made in the text.Matthews, et al have given us a guide that is appropriate for advanced writers as well.Virtually every page has gems of wisdom or insights that will enhance the end result of scientific communication.This book may be especially helpful for those that are "stuck" in trying to get started writing or have complete "writers block".After reading and using this book, readers will likely be thankful that the authors have so adeptly conveyed their wisdom and vast experience in helping others to write with greater clarity and brevity.

Good, but could be better
Our lab used this book for a study group on effective scientific writing. We are located in Korea, so with the exception of the instructor and I, all participants were not native speakers of English. As a result, this review is from the viewpoint of foreign students. It is based on chapter reviews written by the members of our lab after finishing the book. Watch what you eat!
Words can hardly express the beauty and cleverness of "Successful Scientific Writing" by Matthews, Bowen and Matthews as a step-by-step guide on how to write scientific reports for publication in English. I am using this book for a course that I teach on scientific writing at thePostgraduate School of Health Sciences atAarhus University in Denmark,and I find it to be perfect! Before this book was published, there was nonethat dealt so well and so entertainingly with so many aspects of what itactually takes to prepare a manuscript for publication in a scientificjournal. Many young (and old) scientists are good thinkers, but they areoften poor writers! Thus, although they may have been able to design andcarry out an experiment, they often lack the ability to express what theyhave done clearly and concisely. This book is for them! The first fewchapters provide mainly words of encouragement for getting the writingprocess underway. There are also remarkable bits of advice, such as thenotion of avoiding certan snacks that could derail ones momentum.In myview, the crux of the book appears in chapters 5, 6 and 7 in whichextraordinarily lucid and practical instructions and exercises arepresented for improving one's ability to write scientifically. Decent book
What can I say, its a mini version of The Language of Medicine. It has all the terms and test and abbreviations. I have not had a chance to use it yet, but my professor who has been in the field of translation and interpreting for 16 years now, swears by it.Its even a great book to have if you are a native English speaker but cannot understand the medical mumbo-jumbo your doctor is telling you.

Lots of High yield info
This book has a lot of useful info, probably more than 1st Aid, and the outline format organization is great to follow. So I think its best to either go with this book or 1st Aid. I recommend 1st Aid. It worked for me.

Awesome Book
Step Up is a great alternative or compliment to First Aid for Step 1. The systems-based organization of Step Up makes it an awesome review resource for unit exams if your school uses a systems -based approach. Step Up is particularly strong in terms of Pathophysiology and Embrology. If you are a visual learner definitely go with Step Up as the charts and diagrams in Step Up are far more numerous and in my opinion superior to those in First Aid.
