Excellent Reference Book - For Lawyers???
I work in law not medicine.I bought Taber's because of the many personal injury cases with which I was involved.People talk about legal language - nothing compares to medical terminology.
Great staple for anyone in the medical field
Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary is all encompassing, defining the simplest to the most complex terms. To be honest, however, I rarely even open it because it came with access to their website for a 6 mo trial. Since I do most of my work (I'm still in school) on the computer, it's much easier for me to run a search than go get the book. Potential buyers: this is more of a "dictionary" than encyclopedia. You're not going to get long explanations but short definitions, otherwise it would be volumes and volumes long. One more thing: it's a very pretty book - well bound; having it on your book shelf makes you look like you actually might know what you're doing!! ... Read more

Incomparable
You've got to have a Netter's Atlas on hand.You never know when you'll need it.Even if you are well out of medical school, well cocooned in your tight little sub-specialty, you still need Netter.You never know when your elderly neighbor is going to knock on your door and ask you precisely which muscle in her back hurts when she stands up, just to pick a random example.
Can you imagine that the pictures drawn by Netter are far much clearer than what we saw during dissections?
I remembered that when we did dissections in the anatomy class throughout the anatomy classes of the 1st 2 years, one student per table (who do not want to touch the corpse) would be responsible to bring and hold the Netter for the entire lesson. Netter really helped us a lot! I have browsed many other anatomy atlas and have not yet found one that is better than Netter. Although some atlases contain real pictures, they are not as clear as that in Netter! I can say, "Netter + Moore" is the golden combination for anatomy!
Visual Learner
If "a picture could say a thousand words", this book is it.I am an LPN turned Medical Coder.The book has made Anatomy `come alive'.I struggled through 2 anatomy/physiology classes in the above 2 programs & still did not feel like I understood.If you are a visual learner, this book is a must.It does have to be supplemented with written text as others have said, I use a google search when my textbooks are not enough.To determine if this book would be helpful, think of it like this, if you put together a big entertainment center, which would you find more helpful: diagrams of where each screw, nut & bolt gets attached to what piece, OR by reading a description of each piece & the description of the piece it gets attached to.For me its diagrams, so the book for me was well worth the cost ($69 + tax at Barnes & Noble, 3rd edition, soft cover). ... Handy Medical Guide
If a doctor gives me or someone else I know a diagnosis, I can look it up in the Manual and get a straightforward, detailed writeup about it.I always use it in conjunction with a doctor.

As much as I need to know and a little bit more
As a student of neuropsychology, I am aware of an overlap between what I must know and what an M.D. studies at a far greater depth. This book, as previous reviewers have noted, is a good introduction for a medical student, and for a psychologist, it is a gold mine. I wish I had read it before taking the gross anatomy class.The illustrations are first rate in my opinion, and the structures, their functions, and differential diagnosis information is very helpful for my professional needs.

Ideal neuroanatomy text for med students/residents
I'm a seasoned clinical neurologist and bought this book to refresh my knowledge of neuroanatomy.To all the med students and residents out there reading this, I can assure you that virtually all of the information in the book is used by practicing neurologists on a daily basis.This is stuff you really need to know; by the time you're in my situation most of it is second nature.The author does a great job of presenting, just as the title promises, clinically oriented neuroanatomy.It goes beyond that, though, because there's also a fair number of elementary discussions of common neurological diseases, including differential diagnosis and treatment considerations.A nice learning feature are the frequent mnemonics scattered through the text, e.g. for the functions of the hypothalmus, HEAL=homeostatic, endocrine, autonomic, limbic.The illustrations are gorgeous, and the case presentations with accompanying MRI/CT are excellent.Strongly recommended. ... I have read this book like there is no tomorrow, and this book is excellent on the ward and off. I can't wait for the next edition. I suggest to buy it and read it.

good resource for IM residents
It's very resourceful.Just a bit heavy to carry around.I should have chosen the PDA version.

Great for review, but you will need to go deeper
Although I consider this to be one of the best handbooks for a quick superficial review, there are several other books which allow for more in depth learning while on the wards... such as The Consult Manual of Internal Medicine & of course... The Washington Manual. I would definitely carry around, or at least have handy, one of these while on the wards. If you get Pocket Med, make sure you get the new edition (2nd) as there is a new neurology section which is very nice. ... Read more

d�j� vu of the PMP exam
I had a very short time to prepare for the PMP examination. I took the decision to buy this software along with the PMP exam prep book by Rita Mulcahy. When I was taking the exam, I had a feeling of d�j� vu, thanks to this simulation software. Most of the questions in the exam were similar to the ones in this simulation software. In terms of PMP terminologies, this book's " 'benefit cost ratio' is greater than one".

Great Book for passing the PMP 2004
I reviewed this book two weeks prior to the PMP exam and passed.It is a geat refresher/translator of PMPisms for folks with extensive Project Management exprenice whom do not want to take/pay for the PMP Prep Classes.

Classic, gold standard
There is only one Hoppenfeld.For what it is, it's the best.It's all diagnosis.Not a word on treatment.But it gives a good review of not just the physical exam but also the underlying anatomy and biomechanics.Two other books are worth getting.Magee's Orthopedic Physical Assessment is a good background book to have on your shelf.It's written by a physical therapist, so the perspective is a little different if you're an MD or DO, but it's still useful.Lots of physical exam maneuvers.Cooper's Pocket Guide to Musculoskeletal Diagnosis is short and sweet and gives diagnostic work up as well as treatment insights.

The View of a Medical Oncologist
In my oncology practice, patients will often bring me articles or books on "alternative" medical therapies.I try to approach all of them with an open mind.One of the best chemotherapy agents ever developed is derived from the bark of the Pacific Yew tree.You never know where the next advance in medicine will come from.I tell my patients that I divide alternative medicines into three categories: known to help, known to harm, and not enough evidence to say one way or the other.
Excellent Book and very well detailed
I read a lot of comments here on Amazon about this book. I see very negative viewpoints. I take it that these negative viewpoints come from people who are extremely closed minded and stick with the "medical" viewpoint about cancer and such.
Adding selenium helps fight cancer
I have great respect for Dr. Clark and her cancer fighting program. However, I feel it is important to add that the nutrient selenium is also important in fighting cancer. This was demonstrated dramatically in a large placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical study -- the most prestigious type of scientific study of nutrients and drugs -- which showed that people taking 200 micrograms (mcg) of selenium daily had only half the death rate from cancer as those given a placebo which did not contain selenium.

Excellent, comprehensive,and easy to use
The Manual is a complete guide to the AMA style and also an excellent grammar book.The topics are easy to find and the tables and lists are comprehensive.It is a great companion to The Chicago Manual of Style because it details the grammar preferred by the AMA and contains needed terminology.This is a necessary reference for medical publications proofreaders and editors.

A style manual you will rarely close
The specific goal of the American Medical Association Manual of Style: A Guide for Authors and Editors is to codify and collect the myriad instructions, rules, and dictums that AMA applies to the many journals, books, and other publications that are printed under its imprint. I have the current edition (30th) and I absolutely love it! Another plus is you are given a code to be able access their online dictionary as well!It's a great book with great illustrations as well. From what I can see it is very thorough. If you work in an ER or assessment setting...
I used this booklet as a quick reference in my work in a hospital ER and in doing intakes.It's meant to simply be a handy reference to the DSM criteria, and can't replace the study, consultation, and experience needed to understand the difference between clinically problematic and non-problematic behavior.If you work within the DSM/ICD/insurance system, and you've heard the phrase "justify your diagnosis" before, here's an invaluable and pocket-sized (well, for a big pocket) tool.

The Only DSM That You Need
This is a modest little book that you can fit into your pocket but it does everything that its big brother(the much more expensive, full version of the DSM IV-TR) does -- at half the price and with greater ease of use. While the unabridged DSM IV is pretty much a textbook of psychiatry, minus only treatment recommendations, this abridgement unpretentiously lists just the diagnostic categories and the relevent (concisely phrased) criteria. Professionals will find it a handy source of symptoms and diagnosis for insurance purposes. Non-professionals will find it usable for the purpose of diagnosing themselves, their spouse, their parents and problematic friends.

This book is excellent for all the new surgical technologists and ST students out there! This book lays it down in simple, almost layman-like terms but is very thorough. pretty good
very short book....takes about 5-6 hours to read...the CD forget it...its crap...so hard to use and unclear...and if your using this book for USMLE 1, the CD is useless...but the text will help consolidate some of the facts in FIRST AID...the depth of the material is appropriate for usmle 1...over all its a good inexpensive book...and cleared up a lot of stuff i ddin't understand in my neuro course....

Not so ridiculously simple for those without a background
I do have a science background, but nothing specifically in neuroanatomy. The book cover and title seem to indicate that this book should be entertaining and "easy" to read. This book is not a cartoon book designed to stimulate memory and is definitely not simple or basic. I am sorry to say this but the line drawings are not the greatest quality. I think it is targeted to med students or doctors who need a very compact clinical symptom reference or a quick refresher but know neuroanatomy. Keep searching if you need an true introduction to neuroanatomy.

Essential for Medical Students
This skinny text is one of the few books that all medical students can read and benefit from. When I took neuroanatomy, it was regarded as the most difficult course in our first-year curriculum. Having read this book early in the course, and referring back to it several times, I got off to a great start. It won't tell you eveything you need to know, nor in the depth you'll need to know it. I felt that this was the most complete and EASY to use Lab book for nursing students, such as I.It even suggests what abnormals can mean clinically.
