a must-read for every woman
Around the time I began using The Pill, a friend mentioned the fertility awareness method, FAM, to me. I wrote it off as the infamous "rhythm method." A year later, desperate to come off the Pill (not a good experience for me), I decided that FAM might be worth looking into.
What a great resource for learning!

Extremely revealing and a great read
Do you want to know what makes men and woman tick?, how they work on the inside?, what chemistry really is? - then look no further. This book is extremely revealing in that ive learnt that even an intimate cuddle can produce a chemical called oxytocin. And thats not all your learn. You will learn much more than a few buzz words in this book, what they are, how they are generated by the body and affected by external elements too - I highly recommend it to anyone that is even the slightest curious about all those feel good chemicals that our bodies produce during cuddling, menopause and even orgasm - its all in here. I found this an excellent book and companion resource for my NLP and psychology study.

understanding hormones influence in Love

Chemical determinism is not enough
The author of this book contributes interesting material on the important biochemicals (dopamine, estrogen, progesterone, LHRH, testosterone, prolactin, oxytocin, and others) that influence and help to regulate the universe we think of as "human sexuality." sex & gender
Sexing the Body is a thick book, and an important one. The section of footnotes is nearly as long as the text of the book (which can be complicated when reading; I ended up using two bookmarks). That said, it covers the part of the conversation that most of us don't have when we talk about the difference between sex and gender. I have a friend who reads my stuff - she's a feminist, and smart. But whenever I say that we don't really know if there are only two sexes, she always writes "you mean genders here?" in the margin. But no, I mean sex. I mean XX or XY. Or "with penis" or "with clitoris." And that's exactly what Anne Fausto-Sterling covers in this book: how we came to decide that there are two sexes, how (through the times) science came to that standard, and why it's wrong and when it's wrong.

The science of gender
This book is covers the science and politics of gender in areadable language. Fausto-Sterling examines biological experiments on lab animals as well as the history behind our concepts of male and female. She describes gender as an "interaction between small groups of people...[that] involves institutional rules."
Gender seen from a particular perspective
As a transgendered person who is trying to read as much information as possible about gender, this book does supply alot of historic, scientific and theoretical background. It is another important addition to my library. That being said, I was taken aback by her comments regarding transexuals on pp 253 as a "type of human" and "stereotypical member of their sex to be".If I misunderstood the inference, I apologize.If not, I am greatly offended and wonder why marginalizing my existence supports yours. The BEST book for beginning IVFers!!:)
I wish I would of found this book first!It's an easy read with so much valuable information.It covers everything from IVF lingo to sample cycles AND gives great commentary from women and men who have survived & succeeded with IVF.I couldn't put it down & constantly found myself sharing interesting info from the book with my husband.You won't be disappointed with this one!!!
Good Info, But Trite and Patronising
The book is filled with good definitions about the winding road that is IVF-fertility treatment is packed with acronyms, abbreviations, and science, and the author does do a good job of explaining what all of the acronyms and abbreviations are.The book flows well and has wit, but the constant underlying message is one of success!IVF succeeds!Just keep your legs in the air/take to bed rest/keep thinking smiley happy positive thoughts and it always works!As someone who's been through a few rounds of IVF and ongoing still, it's not that easy for most people.IVF is hard enough without infusing constant messages of false hope-I feel the author is irresponsible in suggesting that IVF can be otherwise.

Required Reference for Pediatric Practitioners
Still the best resource on birth defects & syndromes, now in full color (and a pretty new blue cover).OMIM on the NIH website is also outstanding, but not the easiest to navigate (google it to find).

Every doctor that sees newborns and kids needs one
As a family practice physician this book was not part of the required reading for us.We had textbooks we were provided and the only time I ran across this text was when I rotated with a genetics specialist that counseled daily on children with syndroms and malformations.I ran across just enough situations like this in the 6 years of family medicine that I ordered one for me - not only is a great reference book, but humbling to read sections from - its not so amazing that there are such a dizzying number of malformations and syndromes that can go wrong in human development - it is amazing that it usually works perfectly.This book will keep a lot of perspective in view for docs like me that face barrages of complains about colds, zits, and back pains.

Superb Resource
This is the best book about congenital malformations available for general pediatricians. It is highly accessible and fairly easy to use. It really helps one put together a differential diagnosis for children with dysmorphic features. The price makes it a bargain that should be in every general pediatric clinic.Read more

Excellent textbook
I've been using this book for several years as a recommended text in my gerontology classes. It is really excellent. It's quite readable and very helpful for the layperson or the health care provider.

Great info and easy reading!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it was packed with so many facts I didn't know. I especially enjoyed the sections on eye color and blood type. This book was very well written and packed with information and personal experiences from the doctor, which made it much more interesting to read. I would recommend this book to any new mom...and I already have one child, just didn't realize I still had so much to learn.
The best book on pregnancy and the first year of your baby!Look no furthur.
We're expecting our third child and I picked up this book because I liked the title.I figured almost two years worth of information in one book would be nice since we already kind of know about preganacy and the baby's first year.I wouldn't have to read too much with my busy schedule and maybe get one or two good tips I didn't get before.Was I wrong!

Thank good ness for this book!
This book was a wonderful tool for my husband and I when we were exploring DI as an option.This is the one book that truly addresses our unique infertility situation.None of the other infertility books spend more than a page talking about using donor sperm.This was wonderful!

A great book to help with the loss!
I am a DI adoptee and I recommended this book to my mother. She really felt validated by the book. As an DI adoptee I also recommend "Adoption Forum" by Kasey Hamner. It covers DI from all angles. And those touched by DI are represented in many of the other topics. Oh, and remember, always disclose!!

Helped me feel less unique
I agree with other reviewers that this book focuses more on the emotional side than the technical. However, I can get all the technical information I need from my doctor. What this book gave me was a sense that there are a LOT of others out there who are doing what I'm doing. It also helped me focus on and deal with all the stress that the process brings with it. I think you can get a lot out of this book even if you are not the hetero couple that is more targeted by the examples. You still have to deal with the issues between you and the child and the donor, no matter what your relationship is, and those chapters were very helpful. ... Read more

Like Sex Itself: Fascinating, Fun, and Educational

You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
Don't dismiss this book because a Hollywood celebrity wrote it.
As it says in the forward, yes, the medical community should catch up with Suzanne Somers. Hormones are a complex subject, and the author Suzanne is wise in the way this book is written and how the content is presented. She asks the questions (what we all want to know but were afraid to ask), and gives you her opinion. But the book is in a question and answer format where the professionals are giving their answers. You may not want to do it Suzanne's way, but she's asked the right questions, and used her celebrity to bring attention to a very important topic - one that professionals and patients should be more aware of, and that major pharmaceutical companies wish you weren't.

This is a great first book to read before entering in to perimenopause is possible. Easy to understand and helps soften the blow many women feel when told those dredded words "Your going into menopause" I tried other things on the market prempro made me swell up 60 lbs in two month. I was told I no longer needed a period..(don't let a doctor tell you that)it just speeds up the ride to menopause. I am becomming very knowledgeable about bioidentical hormones and shame on Ob/Gyn who don't know about them.after all they have been around the medical world since the 40s!! Drug companiest hate them becasue you can't patent them and they must be mixed in a special pharmacy called a compounding pharmacyI find myself educating Dr.s who don't seem very interested.. It is not easy to find the right combonation of homrones but when you do it's jackpot! You will feel great. Better than the other pregnancy fitness books out there!
Scientifically reasoned, detailed explanations of the why and how of exercises for strengthening abdominals and pelvic muscles for pregnancy and after.This author clearly has had experience coaching women to do these exercises - I like the instructions of how to avoid common mistakes in these exercises, and also the interesting abdominal exercises (Tupler method) for reducing abdominal diastasis.This book looks like an excellent guide for those who want a specific training program to prepare for pregnancy and a faster recovery.

Mere markets?
The fact that this book is published by the Harvard Business School and the author is a professor there tells us much about how this topic is broached. The main focus of the book is on how the infertility industry (the baby business) and the market interact. Other vital elements, such as moral considerations, are barely mentioned. And this is where the book breaks down. Yes, the market side to the question is very important, and rightly needs to be explored, but taken out of a bigger social and ethical context, the approach comes across barren and empty (no pun intended).
The Birth of the Scholarly Page Turner
This is good stuff-if not juicy, and Spar casts a wide net that doesn't miss a thing: conception techniques, fertility markets, surrogacy, designer babies, human cloning, and adoption.The writer also has the guts to have a lucid, constructive point of view-never backing away from the controversial subjects many would balk about discussing.This book is a must read for anyone who might, is, or has gone through any of the processes above, and for the rest of us like me, just a great eye-opening read.In fact, I kept thinking as the pages turned: "I had no idea..."As a piece of scholarly writing it is immaculate (check out the pages of footnotes!), but more impressive is the fact that Spar's writing style is trenchant, entertaining and unwavering in it's ability to present a point of view to the reader.I wasn't expecting it, but Spar continually challenges and provokes as she weaves her riveting tale of the dynamics of a topic-both moral and technical-that is dear to the hearts of us all: babies.Wow.A scholarly page-turner!?Shouldn't there be an award for that? It's great read, and I highly recommend it.

Informative book, but problems in adoption industry overlooked
This was a very informative book, and I'm glad I bought it.However, the chapter on adoption glossed over the serious problems with the U.S. adoption industry.The book says that "adoption works."It may work for the baby-buyers and baby-sellers, but evidence shows it does not work well for mothers who are separated from their children by adoption.The book also implies that mothers choose to surrender their children for adoption, when in fact, most mothers who surrender their children to adoption believe that they have no other options, are uninformed about their options for keeping their child, are uninformed about the consequences of adoption, and/or are pressured or coerced to surrender.While the adoption industry provides privileged women with the choice of aquiring someone else's baby, it takes away poor women's choice to keep their child.See www.OriginsUSA.org and http://www.originscanada.org/adoption_coercion.html ...
