Mayo Clinic Guide to Women's Cancers
When a family member was recently diagnosed with endometrial cancer, a dear friend sent immediate help by giving us a copy of this book. I can't say enough about how helpful it is to have the information this book provides. It has diagrams, easy explanations, is comprehensive in the information it presents about types of cancers, and treatments. We were comforted by having so many questions answered, and better prepared by light years to converse with and understand what the doctors and surgeons were saying.

New angles on women's health
It is refreshing to read a bood that actually tackles women's health problems which really are not taken seriously. Too many women suffer and at this time the medical establishment should take a more serious and alternate view on how to research and help women suffering with PMDD. This book has been an immense help and many kudos to Ms. Dell for tackling this subject.

An excellent book!
I have been counseling women and their spouses/partners for over 5 years about all aspects of PMS and PMDD, more especially how to effectively treat PMS and PMDD using specific nutrition and other life-style changes.I have been symptom free of my own severe PMDD for over 4 years now following these methods.I found this book to be an honest, well researched and insightful tool in helping women (and their spouses/partners) to understand this disorder from the inside out. Unsung Lullabies: Understanding and Coping with Infertility
I can't say enough good things about this book.For several years,I have had problems mourning and moving past my infertility.This book helped me finally move on from the hurt and disappointment because it helped me realize that lots of other people feel the same pain and anger when they struggle with infertility.It made me realize that I am NORMAL and infertility is a devastating thing that should not be taken lightly. I feel so much better having read this book.

A must have. . .
Out of all the fertility "help" books, this was our favorite.Not only was it informative but it helped us to feel 'normal' amidst a trying process.In fact we loved this book so much that we bought one for each of our parents.It's another tool to help educate them about the trauma we've experienced for over three years.

bizzare but fascinating! :)
i hesitate to write a review of this book because it might appear 'pervy' just to comment ;) but in all fairness, this book is worth reading for anyone interested in science, biology, sex, or ourselves :) ..anyone who enjoys this book would also probably enjoy the weekly publication: NewScientist :)

a test to reach easter
If you want to be grossed out, amused and steeped in leading scholarship all at the same time, this may be your book.In a fun, concise and well structured book, Birkhead gives us an up-to-date account of sperm competition in animals.The examples used are wide-ranging, from bed bugs to people, and never fail to raise an eyebrow.A Doay sheep female copulated 163 times in five hours and a man eating sushi once learned that the wiggly things in his tongue owed their thanks to a squid spermatophore.Beyond these exemplars of bizarre, though, this book contains cogent arguments for the place of sperm competition.It kindly sandbags the sensational claims of Baker and Bellis (in their Human Sperm Competition), giving us a fairer treatment in its place, both with respect to humans (where sperm competition has been of relatively little recent importance, evidenced by the relatively small testes and poor sperm quality of males) and numerous other taxa.The section on female benefits to multi-male mating is also worth noting.Evidence is amassed for female benefits in obtaining sufficient sperm, resources and improving the genetic quality of their offspring (e.g. through pairing her genes with a good MHC complement).These last ideas on genetic benefits will continue to inspire new research, just as other ideas in the book should too (accessory glands such as the prostate may have originated in the evolutionary battle of the sexes).It could be stated that the book overstates the case for sexual conflict, when benign agreements have been reached; after all, it wouldn't pay over evolutionary time for the faithful California mouse or swan to employ cruel mechanisms at expense to a partner.Yet this book is worth the strange questions and looks you'll get on the bus when people see its cover and look over your should while reading it (just as happened to my yesterday).

Stranger-than-fiction sex book
"Promiscuity" is about sex.Well, I suppose that much is obvious.And sex always makes for great reading.We are all obsessed and entertained by it.Still, this book took me by surprise.It is not your typical book about sex: offering cheap thrills or mundane, overdigested sociopsychological chatter.It is a unique guided tour of the bizarre world of reproduction throughout the animal kingdom.It is also a glimpse into the odd world of evolutionary biologists, in this case those who spend their lives contemplating the meaning behind all of the bizarre variations on sex in the animal world.Apparently, these highly respected academic scholars go to work each day to figure out such things as why some fruitflies make sperm that are 20 times longer than their bodies and why others produce seminal fluids that are toxic to their mates, why some marine flatworms have dozens of penises, why certain slugs have a penis that is longer than their body and that occassionally become so horrifically tangled about their mate that they must be chewed off, why dunglfies sometimes drown their mates in wet dung, why females of one species of catfish fertilize their eggs by drinking sperm, and why deep-sea anglerfish males bite their mates and never let go.The list goes on and on, preparing me with remarkable ammunition for the next dinner party.Read more

Masterpiece or wonder?
While Darwin's theory of natural selection was accepted in the 1930s, Darwin's theory of sexual selection remains controversial.In Ernst Mayr's recent What is Evolution? Darwin's theory of sexual selection receives about two paragraphs.By comparison, Darwin considered sexual selection important enough to receive an equal number of pages as he devoted to his theory of natural selection.130 years later, he's still probably the only evolutionary theorist to make this judgement.Equally, one must wonder that if Darwin had not come up with the idea of sexual selection, would anyone else have done so?
Thought police
Darwin operated in a thought world completely unacceptable to the "politically correct" speech/thought codes found on most college/university campuses today. If one subscribes to Darwinian or neo-Darwinian ideas, one has to wonder what new "great ideas" we are missing out on today, now that the politically correct thought police have taken over the media, education, and popular entertainment establishments--effictively suppressing the sort of thought that nurtured Darwin's "scientific" speculations.

Best I've come across
I don't pretend to have read *all* the infertility books in existence, but I have read a fair cross-section of them.I like this book the best because it has information I haven't seen elsewhere, and answered a lot of my questions.He quotes a lot of studies and statistics, which I like better than people who just make pronouncements and expect you to believe it just because it's in print.He has actionable suggestions that I hadn't come across before, like doing a count of your follicles (using ultrasound) to give you a gauge of how many years of fertility you have left, so you can make more informed decisions about pursuing treatment.Overall, I would recommend this book for people who want to be very well-informed and full participants in their treatment.If you don't really want to know the nitty-gritty (certainly not everyone does), this book is not for you.

Crucial Desk Reference
This is an integral desk reference for the reproductive health educator.This text outlines all that there is to know to date about contraceptive methods and their function.I don't inted to part with this until the 19th edition is released.

Still good, but in bad need of updating
Contraceptive Technology is perhaps the best book available for understanding and using contraception. It should be in the office of every gynecologist, family physician and nurse practitioner and family planning clinic. I will not repress my feelings about this book.
I don't like the theories in this book, and I don't like the class for which I have to read them. SO I guess that makes me a little biased. Also, I've only read part of the first chapter.
Great resource
easy to read and very well-organized text. this book is comprehensive in its coverage of theory as related to all levels of development--affect, cognition, object relations, and much, much more. it includes numerous perspectives from the field. it was especially helpful to my understanding as a graduate student new to psychoanalytic theory and methodology. explanations are not convoluted and are so well done that i have been able to use many of them in educating patients about family of origin issues as related to current functioning. highly recommended reading!
