sex & gender
Sexing the Body is a thick book, and an important one. The section of footnotes is nearly as long as the text of the book (which can be complicated when reading; I ended up using two bookmarks). That said, it covers the part of the conversation that most of us don't have when we talk about the difference between sex and gender. I have a friend who reads my stuff - she's a feminist, and smart. But whenever I say that we don't really know if there are only two sexes, she always writes "you mean genders here?" in the margin. But no, I mean sex. I mean XX or XY. Or "with penis" or "with clitoris." And that's exactly what Anne Fausto-Sterling covers in this book: how we came to decide that there are two sexes, how (through the times) science came to that standard, and why it's wrong and when it's wrong.

The science of gender
This book is covers the science and politics of gender in areadable language. Fausto-Sterling examines biological experiments on lab animals as well as the history behind our concepts of male and female. She describes gender as an "interaction between small groups of people...[that] involves institutional rules."
Gender seen from a particular perspective
As a transgendered person who is trying to read as much information as possible about gender, this book does supply alot of historic, scientific and theoretical background. It is another important addition to my library. That being said, I was taken aback by her comments regarding transexuals on pp 253 as a "type of human" and "stereotypical member of their sex to be".If I misunderstood the inference, I apologize.If not, I am greatly offended and wonder why marginalizing my existence supports yours. Masterpiece or wonder?
While Darwin's theory of natural selection was accepted in the 1930s, Darwin's theory of sexual selection remains controversial.In Ernst Mayr's recent What is Evolution? Darwin's theory of sexual selection receives about two paragraphs.By comparison, Darwin considered sexual selection important enough to receive an equal number of pages as he devoted to his theory of natural selection.130 years later, he's still probably the only evolutionary theorist to make this judgement.Equally, one must wonder that if Darwin had not come up with the idea of sexual selection, would anyone else have done so?
Thought police
Darwin operated in a thought world completely unacceptable to the "politically correct" speech/thought codes found on most college/university campuses today. If one subscribes to Darwinian or neo-Darwinian ideas, one has to wonder what new "great ideas" we are missing out on today, now that the politically correct thought police have taken over the media, education, and popular entertainment establishments--effictively suppressing the sort of thought that nurtured Darwin's "scientific" speculations.

A Guide to a New View of the Free Self
Dr. Winnubst's latest work should prove to be an excellent, eye opening experience for anyone interested in what we mean when we call ourselves "free," or even what we mean when we say "I." Using several eariler philosopher's works about experience and identity, Dr. Winnubst deconstructs the myth of the automonous individual, independent of such fundamental considerations such as race, gender, economic status, and sexual orientation. Further, she argues that the myth of the autonomous self has been established for the sake of those who benefit from social injustice, what Dr. Winnubst calls "phallisized whiteness." She continues by offering how we can proceed while accepting our aspects of race, gender, wealth, and the like as inseparable parts of ourselves.

Don't waste your time
This book is just another example of John Money making up stuff to earn a dollar.He is a known fraud and people should not be naive enough to take him seriously.In the past he has made up data and published false research to support his claims.He is a poor excuse for a scientist and nobody should buy his work

The best single book for the befuddled and/or fearful
Looking for a book to suggest to a family that has been having trouble understanding, and continuing to love, a gay family member, I had a quick look-around for published materials. I was especially hopeful that there might be an appropriate title by Dr. Milton Diamond, but no such luck. I'll have to hope they'll view his website.That left me with two books that I would very strongly recommend: John Money's Gay, Straight, and In-Between, and Anne Fausto-Sterling's Sexing the Body.Money's book is a straightforward description of how a serious and responsible researcher has come to understand homosexuality over the course of decades of research, but Fausto-Sterling's is a more "nuanced" account of the formation of human sexualities that ruthlessly but with good humor attacks easy assumptions and over-generalizations.
This man's work lacks any scientific merit--it's all opinion
