This is a supplement, not a primary resource
Hopefully this statement will help those of you who are trying to decide what to buy: If you do not own a full copy of the APA Publication Manual, then do not buy this book. This book is meant to be a pocket-sized reference guide that you can carry with you. It is meant as a supplement, but it is not the primary resource -- the APA Publication Manual is the primary resource.
Incomplete
There's no rules for title pages, no examples of manuscript pages, no rules for pagination. It doesn't even tell you if the reference list belongs on a separate page or what its heading looks like. I consider these glaring omissions, particularly if you are expected to use pure APA and have no departmental style guide (like me). This book is basically a glorified guide to citation and syntactic rules. Avoid it and pay the extra five bucks for the complete book. Getting the cheap book as some kind of protest won't signficantly hurt the APA and it will just make things harder for you.

Good book, lacking in visual references
While this is a great condensation of the main rules needed to write in APA style, this book lacks one major thing -- the practical examples of how to apply APA style in a document or manuscript.

the premier style guide for published American English
It is perhaps time to worry if you feel particulary warm and affectionate towards a book like THE CHICAGO MANUAL OF STYLE.
Call Me Old Fashioned, but I LOVE This Book
If you work in the literary world, it drives you nuts on a daily basis to see how few writers bother to check for accuracy when it comes to using quotes, italics, or underlining in their manuscripts; how few know when to use single quotes or double quotes--don't get me started. Suffice it to say, this is the book to consult. Though there are a half dozen style books, you can't go wrong using Chicago!

a mess
For being the official source on APA this book is appallingly bad. It is extremely hard to use, is incomplete, and seems to have even less information than is freely available on the net. Save yourself some time and skip buying this.

The Plot was pretty slow moving
I don't know... i just think the plotting of this novel was just pretty slow and not really exciting at all.The villains were just cardboard characters, the hero was kinda blah, and it just didn't build to an exciting resolution.So I can only give it two stars for effort...

Do You Dread Looking Things Up?
The Elements of Style makes grammatical research so easy, you'll want to look up things you'd always wondered about but thought would take too much time. Recently someone asked me about the use of the serial comma, and, as it was about text we were going to put on the dust jacket of a book, it was sufficiently important to look up. It turned out to be the second item in the Table of Contents. First you get the general rule, in this case "In a series of three or more terms with a single conjunction, use a comma after each term except the last." The example given is "gold, silver, or copper." The sole exception is a series of names in a business: "Brown, Shipley and Co." There! With thirty seconds effort, the issue was adjudicated. I can't recommend it highly enough. Thank God for the Fourth Edition. My Third Edition is dog-eared with use.

Important Reading
This little book is important reading for any one who has or is desiring to write. One of the best things that I could say about the book is that it is full of examples that are juxtaposed. Every element is clearly defined in such a way that any one can easily see the difference between the examples given. This book is a "how to" book for proper use of english in written form. It seemingly covers everything you could imagine from the use of commas and omiting needless words to expressing yourself clearly and not overwriting. The five chapters are: 1. Elementary Rules of Usage 2. Elementary Principles of Composition 3. A Few Matters of Form 4. Words and Expressions Commonly Misused 5. An Approach to Style.
Absolutely Indispensable!
Anyone doing any writing, regardless of the purpose, must have a copy of this handy little reference book right next to their dictionary and thesaurus. "Elements of Style" is an indispensable little guide full of superb tips for the correct use of the English language. ... Read more

A book about love
Ms. Anand tells a wonderful tale of true love.Love of a husband and wife faced with unexpected challenges so early in their marriage, and how they struggled to keep that love alive under both sad and horrific conditions.Love of children for their parents and each other.Love of family, both immediate and extended.And love for each and every person touched by the fight for the cure. I was swept away by the human drama and just when I thought I knew what was going to happen next, the story look another unforeseen turn.It's amazing to realize that this is a true story.Life and love doesn't get any better than this.

It makes you think and it makes you care
This wonderful book has a lot of emotional depth and complexity.John Crowley, the young father, is brash, brilliant, arrogant, and ignorant.He makes personal mistakes and business mistakes, yet you remain drawn to his story by empathy for his desperation as he fears that his small children will suffer a slow painful death.It's an honest and interesting portrait of a real human being, not a one-dimensional hero.
Interesting - Read it non-stop!
Very good book - Interesting story.Highlights are the lengths a family goes through to help their children, and the inspirational message.I think the title is ironic, since there is not actually a "cure" for Pompe Disease, merely a treatment to help stabilize and possibly restore some muscle function.Also misleading a bit, because while Crowley without a doubt worked very hard on a cure, the actual treatment approved by the fda was not the main one he was involved with researching/funding.Nonetheless, still a very admirable man and good story. ... You need this book
This book is a must-have for anyone writing a college level or above paper.I've found that it's better used as a reference, not as the kind type of book you sit down and read.One warning, it is a manual, so it's pretty dry - dry, but necessary.

This book is the Bible for Historians!
I was instructed by several of my past professors that this book would be the guiding light in regards to submitting & creating scholarly materials in my academic writing matriculation.They were right, this book regardless of its many editions has been in my possession for the last 6-7 years.Academians of all concentrations when it comes down to the publishing of Termpapers, Thesis, or Dissertations, you really cannot go wrong with this Chicago-style format.This book made assessing materials, writing papers, citations, proper documentation, and even grading essay papers as a college instructor an enjoyable experience.However, as a undergraduate and graduate student I was introduced to this bible.Now I am entertaining the idea of future editing. Excellent, comprehensive,and easy to use
The Manual is a complete guide to the AMA style and also an excellent grammar book.The topics are easy to find and the tables and lists are comprehensive.It is a great companion to The Chicago Manual of Style because it details the grammar preferred by the AMA and contains needed terminology.This is a necessary reference for medical publications proofreaders and editors.

A style manual you will rarely close
The specific goal of the American Medical Association Manual of Style: A Guide for Authors and Editors is to codify and collect the myriad instructions, rules, and dictums that AMA applies to the many journals, books, and other publications that are printed under its imprint. WOW Eye opening

Not a very appealing text
Chapters are disjoint at times, with no reference to similar concepts between them.Almost as if they were all written separately without any editing to tie them all together.
Health Behavior and Health Education
This book is a must have for anyone in the health education field. It presents all major health behavior theories in a clear and understandable manner, applies theories to case studies at the end of each chapter, and offers a table summary of each theory's core constructs. The book is well written and with this third edition comes more updated research information.

the nuts and bolts to put the thing together
I am working on my dissertation.This book got me out of my thinking chair and to my writing desk.The philosophical approach to qualitative research is very contemporary and will take us into whole new areas of research to improve and 'polish' humanity.My only objection is the cost.Does a book like this really have to cost over $60?Too much.

This is just awesome. This opens up a whole universe for the qualitative researcher.
When one thinks of qualitaitve research one tends to think immediately of focus groups and face to face interviews - but increasingly with research the game is shifting toward online surveys that generate wonderful amounts of open-ended content, and research projects may also involve ethnography and content analysis to gain rich insights. In other words the focus of the professional must shift toward that quesiton: "what on earth do we do with all this 'soft' data?" Those verbatims, those observation notes... there's a huge amount of data waiting for interpretation. Can you systematically analyse it?

Somewhat Useful...
I am a master's student just beginning graduate studies in the humanities.I picked up this book during my first semester and devoured it over the course of a few days (my undergraduate degree is in mathematics, so I figured I was a little behind the curve in my present area).It's the kind of book I think I will return to occasionally throughout my studies.There's some useful stuff here, but the main point of the book is "make sure you make a good argument!"That's really what it boils down to.As someone with a solid background in logic, however, I found much of the book to be reducible to basic principles of common sense.There's a section on "warrants" for example that sounds very sophisticated and difficult, but is really just an exercise in constructing a logical argument by using universally accepted propositions.Now this is fine, but I think the material could be presented in a much simpler manner.Instead of using large tables and graphics with arrows and textboxes and all that jazz, the authors could have taken a more minimalist route and avoided a lot of confusion. I don't know... maybe I would have just preferred a different format.Some of the things in the book really bug me.For example, chapter seven introduces the ideas of claim, warrants, reason, and evidence.To put it simply, you base claims on reasons.Evidence is the cold hard reality upon which the reasoning process rests.Warrants are like propositions which connect reasons to claims in the way antecedents are connected to consequents.If your warrant is something like A=>B then your reasons will need to coincide with A and your claims with B (if your warrant is going to successfully connect reasons to claims).If your claim is more specific than B then your warrant isn't strong enough (and your claim is unjustifiably strong).If your reason is broader than A then your claim won't necessarily follow because your not sticking to the limits of the proposition.This kind of stuff is very basic logical reasoning which everyone is familiar with.So why do the authors say "as we said, this is not easy stuff."Maybe it's not easy because the presentation is muddled.It could have been simplified by taking a more symbolic route (perhaps in addition to, or as a a preliminary, what is already here).

Excellent way to learn the steps required to write an quality research paper.Learning the proper way to do reseach will remove stress and make writing fun.I am a 1 year MBA student at WSU but I wish I learned these techniques in high school.The next edition should have examples and resources for business students.

Essential to understanding biostatistics
I found this book clear, concise, and extremely helpful. I am not a numbers and theory person, but using this book in conjunction with strong classroom lectures helped me to understand the principles and methods tremendously. I see there are some negative reviews posted, but statistical computing can be a difficult process to learn, and I can understand how students might become frustrated if they lack the proper lectures to support this excellent teaching tool. I hope a few rotten classroom experiences will not discourage other customers from buying this book.

Better than most
I like it.I studied statistics and probability in the past, and find this book to be among the easiest to understand.Using this book requires having a basic understanding of the language and symbols of mathematics, as well as, the willingness to learn new mathematical concepts.Generally speaking, these concepts are not easy to learn.Rather than avoid the language of mathematics, it teaches statistics at a basic level.
the "never again" book for biostatistics
Let me just start by saying I really like math, but this book did not help me to learn biostatistics at all.It doesn't explain the issues and equations very well and it has absolutly no answers in the back to check with yours, that's a whole other book...and that only has answers to the odds.Perhaps this would be a decent book for anyone who already has a handle on the subject and wants to learn more, but if this is your first exposure to biostatistics, like me, try another source to learn from, this book makes a difficult subject near impossible. ... Great Resource for the Dissertation

This book is great.It has all you need to complete a research paper at any level.I used it for my bachelor's project which, according to my advisor, is equivalent to a Master's thesis in content requirement.My advisor has asked me to lend him the book so he can use it to revise the current research manual supplied by the college.This book is easy to read and has a lot of useful tables and charts.

a must for secondary and post-secondary students

A Must-Have Book for College Students
I have used this book extensively since I began my Master's degree program, and I have been very pleased with both the content and simplicity of use.Having been out of school for several years, I found myself confused as to how to correctly cite various types of media for a bibliography, but this great book is loaded with examples of how to correctly cite any type of media.

Better than First Aid
I found Step 2 secrets to be a much higher yield resource for Step 2 CK than First Aid. First Aid contains too much detailed basic science review for my liking. Step 2 secrets is predominantly clinical and full of pearls that came up on CK for me. Especially helpful were the emergency medicine, cardiology and rheumatology sections. The question/answer format is very handy. I covered answers and discussed the question in my mind, in essence self-pimping throughout the book. It's a great book to use for group study or study with a partner as well. I went through secrets before tackling Qbank questions and found it to be very helpful. When I sat for CK, I was amazed by how many questions (50+) that I was able to answer immediately based on recalling the content in secrets. Secrets is short and easily digestible. Although I consider USMLE World and Kaplan Qbank to be the top study aids for the exam, I believe that step 2 secrets is a very good supplemental text for preparation. I regret having purchased and read First Aid (see my review of First Aid for CK). In general the first aid series are very good as we all know; however, step 2 secrets is superior to first aid for CK in my opinion.

Solid but use USMLEworld too
Several interns had recommended this book to me to prep for Step 2.I used Step 2 Secrets almost exclusively with Kaplan Q Bank and USMLEworld (another online question bank).Step 2 Secrets seems to deal with the bread-and-butter of the medical field, which is an essential foundation for the real test.While doing USMLEworld, however, I tended to miss quite a few questions that Step 2 Secrets did not seem to cover. Unfortunately, the real Step 2 tends to mimic USMLEworld closely in terms of format, difficulty, and overall vagueness.Just prior to test time, I browsed through First Aid Step 2 CK and it seemed to cover some of the holes in my knowledge.I did not feel very confident taking the test.Nonetheless, I managed a 260+ on the real thing, which I don't think reflected my true lack of knowledge.While Step 2 Secrets (as a previous reviewer mentioned), does do a good job covering the basics, it lacks the inside edge USMLEworld and the newest First Aid (only slightly better) possess.In the end, you probably only want to buy either Step 2 Secrets or First Aid.They're quite similar, so your decision should be based on the format.If you like Q&A, go for Secrets.If you like outlines and text, First Aid (Crush Step 2 is basically an outline version of Secrets).Make sure, however, to do USMLEworld.It's frustrating and nit picky, like the real thing.Step 2 is more instinctual in nature than Step 1, so it's more about realizing general concepts of treatments and workups.Practice questions and scenarios are key here.Prior clinical experience and doing well on rotations (learning, not scutting) are important as well.Good luck and I hope you have good results.
