Excellent!Wish I had bought it months ago.
I wish I had this book when I was doing my final core class preparing my prospectus.I had it on my 'wish list'.It would have made things much easier if I had obtained it earlier.I read it one sitting.Written in layman's terms.The best book out of several that I have bought to prepare for my dissertation.Highly recommend this as the one to obtain!You will find it valuable.

Handy Guide
This book is providing me with excellent guidance throughout my dissertation process. Honestly, it has even been more helpful than my advisor. As many doctoral students do, I keep odd hours while writing, often getting my best ideas in the middle of the night. It is great to be able to access my handy advisor 24/7, meaning that my ideas have been easily acted upon no matter what time of day or night I think of them. A bit pricey, but well worth it for me.

Comprehensive and Clear
This is an outstanding guide for the dissertation process. Excellent Statistics Book
Intuitive Biostatistics takes a confidence interval approach that should be required reading for all persons interested in statistics. His discussion of basic statistical concepts in the context of interpreting lab test results is clear and informative and introduces the reader to Bayesian concepts that are presented very simply.

Nice book but you need to know the subject!
This is a nice book if you know the subject from another book ! - otherwise the explanation is limited.

Good If you know your Statistics
This is a good book if you know statistical analysis. Do you know what to use, when and where? If you do, this book is good because if you are going to use SAS for analysis you have got to know your statistics. What good would FORTRAN be if you didn't know Algebra? You need both.

Very readable and practical
This book is very well written. Each topic is presented with an interesting example, including discussion. None of the topics are presented in great depth, so for example, this is not the book to use for learning factor analysis, or cluster analysis, etc. The real strength of the book is that it shows how to do the analysis using SAS in a clear and concise way. Research and Theory Construction
This book's title shows that "qualitative research" is its primary subject, and "developing grounded theory" is its secondary subject. The opposite is true in the case of the book coauthored earlier by Strauss: "The Discovery of Grounded Theory: Strategies for Qualitative Research." In the interval between the writing of the two books, Strauss may have realized that his thesis was about research work more than theory construction. But the text of this second book too presents research work as theory construction, as explained below. It could be thought that what is to be called a "theory" is a linguistic issue. But the definition of this term must not prevent the construction of real theories as distinct from empirical knowledge.

A Grounded Theory Classic (re-edited)
Excellent book to put in the hands of every student wishing to use qualitative methodology - in grounded theory - for a research project, especially at the graduate level. Strauss(who died in 1996, two yearsbefore the new edition of the book was published) and Corbin havethoroughly revised the first edition of "Basics of QualitativeResearch" and added, among other things, a FAQ based on theirstudents' questions. Caution, though, the book is NOT a step-by-step manualor a A-to-Z handbook for forging concepts, building categories andproperties, etc. and other books will have to be read as an introduction tothe technical aspects of qualitative research. Also, a complete newcomer toqualitative analysis may find chapters 5, 6 and 7 unclear until he gets tochapter 8 about open coding.Read more

More useful than other beginner's texts but...
As someone who recently retired from analyzing ecological data after a decade of it, I found this book to be pretty good one-stop shopping.I wouldn't say it's an introduction to stats so much as it is a systematic compilation of all the "traditional" statistical topics (t-tests, regressions, etc).As such, it contained some useful formulas that do not occur in regular "Stats 101" texts, such as sample size estimators for various analyses.
The medium?s viewpoint
I had been teacher of Statistic by several years in some universities of Mexico and the Zar book had been a common company in my classroom all the years. Certainly it is not to begginers, but it is very usefull to proffesors. It usually have answer to assess uncommon series data, as non-normal data, or missing data. The book work almost all the time with data series that have normal distributions, and use non-parametric statistical tools to work with other series distributions. There are other books that deal with it best, considering, by example, tests to data with Poisson or binomial distributions (the common in the biological sciences). However, to undergraduate students, and some graduate students, the Zar "normal" approach work fine. Graduate research or doctoral research is done better not with other book in hand but with other statistical approach in mind, and unfortunately there is not only book to do it. Well, in that case, the Zar book help to understand some of the main points to make high statistical analysis.

The beginner's viewpoint
Frankly, I am aghast that the publisher calls this book accessible and appropriate for beginners.I purchased it as the required text for an introductory biometry class, and it has contributed very little to my understanding of biostatistical analysis.After chapter 7 (at best), it is simply incomprehensible.The mathematical notation requires far more than a high school algebra background, and the wording is extremely terse.Yes, it does offer real-world examples, and yes, it does offer a large range of statistical tables, and I am sure that it is good reference for people who are already working as statisticians and who have advanced degrees in statistics.However, it is misleading to call Zar a good introductory text - it is completely inappropriate for beginners.It is too concise in a situation where more words would be useful.Sokal and Rohlf 2nd ed. is far better; Fowler et al. also proved helpful. ... Detailed introduction
Comprehensive book. Requires good understanding of basic statistics and mathematics for some chapters. However without this, it is still a great book for a solid foundation on Clinical Trial design and conduct.

CONCISE MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH
The fact that this book was designed for researchers, who are involved in experimental (clinical) trials, makes the basic knowledge of statistics essential. Good intro textbook

Good content Poor Design
The book is very helpful.The layout does not make for easy reading. The book would be much better with good visuals and less chunky paragraph style writing - the virtues of bullet points especially during pre-exam reading.

This book is an excellent introduction to epidemiology. The authors present epidemiologic concepts in an easy-to-understand manner with interesting supportive examples from the fields of reproductive health and HIV epidemiology. In addition to the standard chapters on study design, bias, and confounding, the book also includes very good chapters on measurement error, causation, and screening, as well as tried-and-proven guidelines for a critical review of epidemiologic studies. My Bible
I used this book in grad school as my textbook and constantly use it now in my job as a six sigma black belt.
Excellent self-tutorial
The book is based upon biostatistics courses taught by the authors.It is designed to be used as a self-tutorial if so desired.The explainations and examples are excellent.

GREAT BOOK...THE BEST DEA CD
The book is excellent with a nice mix of theory and applications in DEA.I believe this is the best book on DEA.Of special interest is the CD that looks at many DEA models.The CD has no competitor and is by far the best around.I have used this CD in many of my academic papers on DEA.If you need DEA software this is the book.

A personal account with interesting anecdotes
Although this is a little old fashioned in its style and content (particularly the photos and graphic style), I was sufficiently engaged with the content and anecdotes to read it right through in one evening. I learnt some new facts and had an insight into the style and ideas of someone who approaches fine lectures and presentations with great care. This made it worthwhile. It is a delightful change not to be assaulted by ego or self assurance. There is one irritating characteristic of style - the repeated use of "granted".

Should be required reading for engineers
After decades of sitting through terrible technical presentations by hapless fellow engineers (who, to be fair, had never been given the time or opportunity for the proper training), I'd had enough. With plenty of examples of misguided slides to serve as comic relief, I created a one-hour seminar containing the essentials of an effective scientific presentation. Since 1999, I've offered the seminar a few times a year at East Coast and California sites of our (very large) corporation for free at lunchtime, for anyone who cared to attend. So far, nearly 1500 people have done so.
A must for scientists and engineers!

Intro to physical examination. Easy and harmless.Liked the chapter summary. This is a book for all health care profesionals. Physicians should use DeGowin or Sapira.

Index Incorrect
The index in the version I have is completely inaccurate.What's more, to obtain errata you're required to enter a code on the publisher's website.This code is not stamped on the book but is on the packaging which I unfortunately threw away before I noticed the index was completely inaccurate.
Save money, buy a used book !

Hysterical
Mary Roach has taken what could be a morbid and rather depressing subject and elevated it to sheer reading pleasure.I thoroughly enjoyed this book, both for the factual information about cadaver donation and for her wry sense of humor in the face of her subjet matter.Various topics are covered, including lab dissection, crash testing, plastination, cremation, water reduction and a host of other options for human remains that I can honestly say I never knew existed.The French did some experiments with guillotine execution that are in a class all by themselves.Highly recommended reading.

Great Audio Book--Just Not During Lunch!
You can imagine what a surreal experience it was to listen to this book on CD while on a house cleaning job...scraping goo off the stove while listing to the description of body putrification after death.

Well-Written Text for Beginners
I'm taking my first biostatistics class with W. Daniel's Biostatistics text.It's a good book, but I think it's for more advanced statistics students.Munro's text is more suitable for beginners who have never taken any statistics class.It explains the basic but important statistical concepts in plain English without using much mathematics.Very well written and easy to understand.The exercises at the end of each chapter are well picked. They are short, yet helpful for reviewing the important concepts that have just been covered.

Statistical Methods for Health Care Research
A very well-written and helpful statistics book. It was required reading for a course in Quantitative Nursing Research last semester. Overall, the concepts such as t-tests, correlation and regression were explained in relatively simple terms. Examples with answers were found at the end of each chapter and the book came with a data disk. This was the most user-friendly statistics book that I have used so far!

I had a chance to review this book. I think the authors can make us much better understand, particularly one who is about to learn the concept of statistics. You can apply this book with the SPSS program in order to interpret the results. Anyway, I still like the calculation parts which areremoved in this edition (3rd) compared with the last one. Invaluable tool for becoming productive and efficient in your research lab
This is the book all grad students should read because this book discusses the things that you typically don't learn in grad school.The book is meant for new faculty, but anyone interested in learning practical lab management issues is encouraged to read this book.There is something useful in this book for both green rookies and experienced veterans.
Fantastic for the new professor
I love this book and only wish it was published when I was first starting a faculty position.Definitely a biologist's perspective (and a lab-oriented one at that), but it covers many of the trials and tribulations of starting a new faculty position: setting up a lab, assessing priorities, making hires, managing committees, managing colleagues, etc. Don't be caught without it!

Best Practice for Internal Med Shelf
Please note that MKSAP 3 it out.That said, I didn't feel the info in MKSAP 2 was outdated, and moreover the questions are different from MKSAP 3.There were several things I liked about MKSAP.It covered a variety of illnesses and grouped them by symptom (so if you felt weak in pulmonary you could easily find sections applicable to that field).The American College of Physicians wrote it, which is quite comforting.It references appropriate research articles for every Q&A.Also, like a shelf, it forced you to make tough decisions.In reality, you order just above every lab and whatever imaging you need to cover yourself.Board questions, though, make you choose the best test from what you would always order.I preferred using the CD-ROM with the book (well made) as I could do questions much faster rather than flipping through a book.One slight criticism was the seeming repetition of certain concepts (asthma treatment protocols).

if this book was marked at $7 retail then I could say that one can buy and not lose money on this book, but for the price and the hype about this book, I only have one word...."Garbbage."Very ill defined passive toned childhish kind of book. not worth the money...

Best for IM shelf (NBME)
Studied only with MKSAP week before IM shelf didn't get all the way through but received a very good shelf score, not excellent, but knew well what I did go over in the text. (Used up-to-date for clinical management when cases came up on ward) otherwise only did q's in MKSAP & didn't read much.
