Amazing!
I am a grad student working on the data analysis for my thesis and this book helped me enormously! The problem with other statistics books is that they give data sets and examples that don't relate to types of data that field biologists half to deal with. My biggest problem was figuring out what kind of statistical tests I needed to use for the kind of data that I had collected, and this book answered many of my questions in that area.

Whew!
When I found myself among seniors in one experiments in ecology class in university (I am a sophomore), I found to my dismay that others knew statistics way better than me. Although I learned probability and statistics in 10th grade, it's been 4 years since then. Therefore, I was in a despate need of a good book. I got this book along with Experimental Design for Data Analysis for Biologists, but I liked this book way better. It's more easy to read (perfect for busy students), has a couple of useful examples, and it's helping me a lot!

Consice and well written review of field biology statistics

Needed for Class
This is a really great book. It is well written and seems easy to follow. IT was required for my Intro to Research class. It will be helpful as well in the development of my capstone/research project for graduaiton.

IT HAS A REFINED ANALYTICAL APPROACH
"Designing Clinical Research: An Epidermiologic Approach" did a thorough analysis of various methodologies, which medical scientists could use in everyday research. It, first of all, outlined all the essential steps (used in epidemiological research), before delving into the analysis of each step. Its information is current and versatile. But, certain important issues like research-funding and statistics received less than expected attention. Despite this flaw, I would still recommend this book to scientists. Its pros did exceed its cons by a mile.

Encouraging Yet Realistic Advice
This book spoke directly to me, a person finishing her dissertation who saw the potential for publishing but didn't know how to get started.The author works for a publishing company and once wrote a dissertation, so his advice is trustworthy.I also felt that the ideas he shared were practical and doable. Having read this book gave me a clear sense of direction as I began my own book manuscript, and I kept the author's advice clearly in mind as I wrote.One downside: The book is wordy and leans toward a scholarly tone.While it isn't exactly an enjoyable read, it is high interest if the reader is thinking about publishing all or parts of her dissertation, and certainly those of us who have written dissertations can get through scholarly text!I recommend this book.It is one of a kind on the market right now. ... I must agree with all the three prior reviews. The author has an easygoing style that I greatly enjoyed learning from. The pages are small in size and the font is rather big; which allows to finish this guidebook in few hours, and repeated. Excellent Guidelines
Great guidelines, easy to follow and good explanations & examples. Also, debunks some of the grammatical rules that we were taught... "ending sentences w/ prepositions". Recommended reading for both writers, ghost writers, and medical practicioners who outsource some of their writing.

Excellent summary of Medical Writing
I recently purchased Robert Ile�s Guidebook to Better Medical Writing and was very pleasantly surprised.He takes a concise, nononsense approach to the subject and provides readers with a series of excellent tips.Hecovers the basics of writing very well but also includes info on how towrite case reports, clinical results, review papers, etc. I have found hisbook to be helpful in my own medical writing and editing consultingservice.Review@lifescipub.com ... Scientific Writing - A difficult task made easier
"Successful Scientific Writing" is a well written, user friendly and sometimes humorous guide to effective scientific writing. Even the wire, lay open binding is user friendly. The text is up to date, well organized and provides guidance on effective use of computers and software in the entire scientific endeavor.Of course the primary strength is in helping the reader through the writing and publication of the scientist's efforts. This concise work would be especially appropriate as a text in scientific writing classes.The exercises provided would be great student assignments. Additionally the exercises are fun and enhance points made in the text.Matthews, et al have given us a guide that is appropriate for advanced writers as well.Virtually every page has gems of wisdom or insights that will enhance the end result of scientific communication.This book may be especially helpful for those that are "stuck" in trying to get started writing or have complete "writers block".After reading and using this book, readers will likely be thankful that the authors have so adeptly conveyed their wisdom and vast experience in helping others to write with greater clarity and brevity.

Good, but could be better
Our lab used this book for a study group on effective scientific writing. We are located in Korea, so with the exception of the instructor and I, all participants were not native speakers of English. As a result, this review is from the viewpoint of foreign students. It is based on chapter reviews written by the members of our lab after finishing the book. Watch what you eat!
Words can hardly express the beauty and cleverness of "Successful Scientific Writing" by Matthews, Bowen and Matthews as a step-by-step guide on how to write scientific reports for publication in English. I am using this book for a course that I teach on scientific writing at thePostgraduate School of Health Sciences atAarhus University in Denmark,and I find it to be perfect! Before this book was published, there was nonethat dealt so well and so entertainingly with so many aspects of what itactually takes to prepare a manuscript for publication in a scientificjournal. Many young (and old) scientists are good thinkers, but they areoften poor writers! Thus, although they may have been able to design andcarry out an experiment, they often lack the ability to express what theyhave done clearly and concisely. This book is for them! The first fewchapters provide mainly words of encouragement for getting the writingprocess underway. There are also remarkable bits of advice, such as thenotion of avoiding certan snacks that could derail ones momentum.In myview, the crux of the book appears in chapters 5, 6 and 7 in whichextraordinarily lucid and practical instructions and exercises arepresented for improving one's ability to write scientifically. There arealso tips on how to optimize word-processing so that the manuscriptsubmitted to the editor of a journal is most likely to be accepted forpublication. In this book you will hear from Vivien Thomas himself.As wonderful as the movie was, it did take some dramatic license here and there.Vivien tells the story of the first "blue baby" operation very matter of factly.As you read the book you will discover that he played things pretty close to the vest.He was not one for dramatic outbursts or fits of temper.Thomas is a dignified quite man and his relation with Dr. Blalock was not all sweetness and light but they worked well togehter and became very close.

The best book I've found on the topic!
This book was the text for the intro to Biostat class at Columbia University this year.It is lucid, well organized, doesn't bog down in details or equations, and gives a good introductory explanation of the basic statistical methods, their rationale for use, and their various assumptions and shortcomings. Great book for teaching med stats
I have been teaching statistical methods and epidemiology for graduate students in the health area for more than 5 years and this book is a hit. Previously I tried Armitage & Berry and got a lot of resistance from the students. Altman's book is well organized, presents the problems and their solutions in a very intuitive way, and focus on the real problems in the area. Very good for introductory courses. I usually use Kirkwood's Essentials of Medical Statistics in parallel.

excellent intermediate level treatment of biostatistics
This is a very well written and popular text on biostatistics. Altman writes for non-statisticians but the book is best suited for those with at least one prior course in statistics and those who have had mathematics through high school algebra. Emphasis is placed on the important practical problems. Good statistical designs and analyses are emphasized. The pitfalls with many published medical articles are discussed in Chapter 16.Read more

Good guide to EBM
Greenhalgh's book is a great read for someone familiar with medical and research terminology. As a med student, I loved it and found it very practical. It contains a great deal of material on how to evaluate the type, methodology, and statistical methods of research papers. There is no glossary, and in places the layout is hard to look at.

Short on Substance
"How to Read a Paper" reads more like a short essay than a book.While it is well written and often full of spirited discussion, this text is somewhat short on substance and generally too simplistic.The author rarely delves beyond the surface when explaining and exporoing this field, leaving me, at least, unsatisfied.Whereas a simplistic approach to any field may be useful, the amplification of themes once introduced is where real learning occurs.This book falls short, where several other excellent texts in this field carry on.I do like the author's style, and would encourage her to scribe a more thorough text... but if I were you I'd wait for that effort before buying this one.

A good place to start

A brilliant introduction to medical epidemiology
Although having graduated some time ago I just keep returning to this well written and crystal-clear undergraduate book on basic epidemiology. This explains clearly also the most basic and important statistical approaches in analyzing data, although leaving multivariate analyses mostly out. However, that might be considered as a virtue as well beacuse the book stays at a very simple level and thus not scare you off it.

For any student on epidemiology and biostatistics
One should not be afraid regarding the edition (1987). It is still a powerfull tool for any student on epidemiology or biostatistics. Despite being not a huge book, it is comprehensive enough for students of any leveland perhaps as a companion to established professionals. You can read itpage by page as a novel or search it for details in the planing andexecution of an epidemiological research.The author is well known for hiswork on important trials in medicine and that makes him an expert on boththeorethical and on a practical basis. ... Atlas of the World, 12th Edition
Maps and other information is highly detailed, colorful, current, and informative. Most would be pleased to own this valuable piece of reference material.

Oxford Atlas
Wonderful, really.There are so many good things about this atlas, that it is difficult to cover them.The maps are great -- though, the one criticism I have is that every country's map in in the names of things in that country's language.Well, not speaking a hundred different languages, I often haven't the slightest idea what I am looking at.A few times, the add the English in parenthesis, but not as much as is needed.I would encourage them to discard the multicultruism and just print everything in English.Things are going to go that way, eventually, any way, as the Anglosphere is getting tired of multiculturalism.Anyway, there are terrific satellite pictures of different cities, many city maps.I wish they would add better maps of the oceans, though.Also, the ocean bottoms would be interesting, like the National Geographic Society has made.I would have liked more maps of little islands, as I have lived on such and would have liked that to see.Anyway, still a fantastic effort.Worth every penny.I bought it for reference, and it has helped me already. ... Outstanding book
This book is a hybrid, part epidemiology and part statistics. It is a resource for those that want to DO epidemiologic studies and ensure that they are performing and interpreting the statistics correctly.Jewell does all the little things right: he delivers the message in plain English, he explains thoroughly the foundations of the various epidemiologic measures of association, and he points out the pitfalls and potential misapplications of the presented statistical tools.The chapters on confounding and interaction are the clearest and the best that I have read.I endorse this book whole-heartedly

Outstanding
I had a chance to read this book cover to cover. All I can say is "absolutely outstanding", short of calling it a historical masterpiece in the field. Very rarely do I encounter an epidemiology or biostatistic textbook that reads so well. It is optimally reader friendly; the author appears to have such a talent in explaining some most sophisticated epidemiological and statistical concepts in such a simplified language. Yet he does not sacrifice the inclusion of some very advanced epidemiological and statistical concepts. New concepts such as causal graphs and instrumental variables are also included and explained beautifully. I strongly recommend this book to all early to intermediate graduate students majoring in Epidemiology. Established epidemiologists may wish to read this book to refresh and update their knowledge. Epidemiologic Methods
This book covers epidemiology beyond the basics. It is at a graduate course level in epidemiology. The book is easy to read for the most part. A general knowledge of biostatistics is helpful. The numerous examples make the concepts easier to understand. There are excercises at the end of every chapter to illustrate the topics further.
