a quick yet comprehensive read
I actually purchased the book for the person I share an office with.He is currently working on his dissertation and kind of at a stand still on page 5.After reading the book, within two weeks he was on page 50 and continues to progress ahead.He really liked the book and has recommended it to several other people.The book helped him focus less on making sure everything he was writing was perfect and more on trying to get a first draft done.While the book assisted him with this, it will probably not be helpful once the draft is done.

To the Point, Easy Language
The author provided a guide to assist the social scientist in writing clear, concise articles, books, etc.Tips for revising/editing were helpful, as were the suggestions for overcoming procrastination, and finding critical colleagues to assist in the process.The tips, I think, were helpful; however, as the author points out, many scientific journals are not interested in articles that are clear and concise.

Logistic Regression
Kleinbaum has done it again.His books are so informative and easy to understand.It is worth the money.

depends on what background you are coming from...
I'm a physician learning about clinical research/biostatistics etc.I found that this book was extremely helpful in guiding me through basic rules, steps and theories on how to build a logistic regression model.The examples where straight forward, even for a person without a strong math background.However, I can also see that this would not be enough for a person set out to be a biostatistician, as this book would seem rather elementary.If you are a person with a so-so background in math and statistics, and are interested in learning to adequately perform statistical analyses with logistic regression, this is the book for you. ... African-American Victims Of Government Laboratory Experiments!!!
One of the least known facts of U.S. history is the government sponsored syphilis experiment conducted upon 399 African-American men from 1932 to 1972.Over the course of these five decades, the U.S. Public Health Service exploited African-American sharecroppers in its effort to determine if the long-term affects of syphilis were different for black people than it was for white people. During the trials, the doctors who conducted the experimentations intentionally denied these men treatment; never informed them of syphilis' destructiveness to their health; and ignored the fact that these men were infecting their respective wives and sexual partners with the disease.As the experiments continued, doctors calculatedly deceived the subjects, informing them that they were suffering from what was categorized as: "bad blood".As the disease ravaged the minds and bodies of these unsuspecting men, no effort was made by the physicians of the Public Health Service to either inform them regarding the disease or provide them with treatment in an effort to curtail its devastating effects.

Statistics in plane english.
If you can not explaine it in plane english you probably don't undestand it yourself.In this book the author present a clear explanation of this technical field in plane english.

good material, too many errors
It's a decent book overall. The material is not too hard to underestand, and there are a lot of medical examples. However, there's nearly a typo on every other page. I wouldn't mind if the mistakes were minor, but it's too much when a third of the solutions are wrong, and statistical tables are incorrect (e.g. 6-8 & 6-9).

Non-mathematical introduction to biostatistics
This is not a treatise in mathematics.The author uses easy to understand examples to explain concepts.Other reviewers have noted typos that altered their learning experience; I have not.Other reviewers report that the presentation of ANOVA is not easily understood; I disagree.Statisticians that are used to the Fisher and Scheff� methods of explaining ANOVA will clearly find this different.I actually found it useful to present ANOVA before the T-test and to use the examples he did.Glantz's text on regression and ANOVA is also very good. ... Not the best, but helpful for CLEP
This book does cover alot of information not needed for CLEP, but it does give you a great guideline on who and what to study for clep and good examples on what questions will look like for the actual clep.
If you're trying to prepare for the American Lit Clep....
The other review on this book by "a reader" is very helpful and I recomend you read it as well as this review.I have taken fifteen CLEP tests and am very familiar with how to study for the test.CLEP tests by their very nature a designed to see if the student has a sufficient grasp on the given subject. On tests like American literature or Humanities which cover a wide variety of different works/toppics,I've found that it's best to study the main points and key elements of the subject instead of spending a whole year trying to read a huge list of books.I would not recomend Rudman's book, however, I would recomend buying the Barron's EZ key's for American Literature.It will help you get a quick grasp on what this subject covers.Also, the Official Clep study guide is a great tool for preparing for the tests.

too much obscure, needless information
I just took the clep test for engl. lit and Amer. lit.It was much easier than I expected, and I vastly overstudied, due in part to being psyched out by these study guides.I thought I needed to know every silly little obscure thing they covered .To prepare for these tests, I'd recommend instead that you buy the Barron's easy key (about 6 bucks), then look over the list of books covered by either Cliff notes or Barron's book notes ( Barron's is better written) and make a list of thetitles they list.Now, armed with that list of commonly assigned books, go to your library and look at the "Magill" masterplots, for an excellent 2-3 page synopsis and critque of these titles. You will save alot of time and money this way -- Zero in on the pertinent stuff and don't get thrown by Rudman's-- ... Read more

I was forced to buy it.
It's an okay text but the author quotes himself a lot.I just wish all the tables and formulas were in a specific location and the symbols for the formulas defined each time a new one was presented.

Clearly and logically set out starting with the reasons for medical statistics and how studies are designed and moving logically to the methods used.All practicing doctors need to know something about medical statistics.This is a very good place to start.It is written for non-mathematicians but has enough mathematics to justify the information presented and stimulate further interest.It is a relatively short book with clear logical explanations rather than flashy illustrations and computer graphics. Also provides exercises, essential in all mathematical subjects.

another fine statistics text for medical students
This is the second edition of an excellent introductory text for medical students similar to Doug Altman's. Bland covers the basics: designing clinical trials and epidemiological studies, data collection, summarizing data, basic probability, standard errors and confidence intervals along with tests of significance (both parametric and nonparametric). Various types of regression methods are covered and this edition adds Cox proportional hazards models and meta-analysis. Many exercises and examples are taken from Bland's 20 years of experience as a medical statistician. It is noteworthy for dealing with sample size issues in Chapter 18. Fantastic Treatment of Sophisticated Mathemeatical Concepts
I've long wanted a better explanation of Eigenvectors and Eigenvalues than I recieved in a econometrics or statistics textbook. This book gives me an incredibly clear understanding of what they are. Now when I look back at the mathematical interpretation again it means so much more. This is a fantastic book that would highly recommend to anyone wanting a clear conceptual understanding of these sophisticated topics. 5 stars, no questions about it!

Great Resource for Statistics
In many introductory statistics courses you usually do not cover multivariate statistics. This book and its companion volume are useful for anyone in upper level undergraduate or graduate programs. It is a great reference to have when planning research.Read more
