Worst textbook I've ever had to use.
This is unfortunately one of the worst, if not the worst, textbook I have ever had to read. This is the first semester at University of New Mexico that we are using the book and it is very difficult to understand some basic concepts. The authors of this book seem to describe basic concepts in such a way that you almost need to be an expert in research and statistics to understand what they are saying.

You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book
Understanding Health Policy
This book is very well written. Though it crams a lot of information into a small number of pages, it is easy to understand. It is excellent at covering all angles of a topic.

A little too focused on clinicians
I needed a book to use for a class I am teaching.This book, while excellent was focused on the clinicians' point of view, somewhat to the exclusion of other angles.

Should be [less money], Not [more money]!
Although I liked the outdated 1988 version of this book, this one is extremely simplistic and omits much of the previously included material.Most of the information included can be found on the web and is shallow compared to Current Protocols or other texts.Although it serves as a reasonable introduction for novices to this area it's extremely overpriced for [money]!!! exccellent book, wish the price is cheaper
One of my collegues recommended this book to me. It surprised me that it has a very broader coverage of topics in medicine where mixed model is appropriate. This book talked many pratical issues such as "why the mixed model failed to converge" etc. The mathematical background is not demanding. Read more

GREAT book!
This book is really useful and handy. It is very well written and easy to read. As the name stated, it provides very practical guides for those who don't have strong background in Statistics but are dealing with longitudinal data. It is written in an example guided format. The outputs from the analysis and guidelines on how to interpret them step by step are included. There is no heavy Statistical notation and you don't need to translate Statistics into English. At the end of the book, there are chapters of how to handle missing data and softwares used in longitudinal data analysis. This book is probably too boring if you are a hardcore Statistician. ... Good for beginners
I am glad to read this book before I prepared for my statistical clinical studies. This book could give you basic ideas, but you need to discuss with your collegues or use more advanced books to improve further.

Understanding biostatistics without becoming a statistican
As a medical writer and editor at The Cleveland Clinic, Thomas A. Lang found that the lack of clear understanding of statistics by non-statisticians affected the clarity of their writing. Physicians had thesame problem while writing up their research papers for publication. Langperceived a need among medical and science writers to understand justenough of biostatistics to make them better writers and editors withoutbecoming statisticians themselves. He devised workshops that were conductedby the American Medical Writers Association which were enormouslysuccessful. The logical next step was to write this book based on thevaluable teaching experience and feedback he got at those courses. In otherwords, this is a book that wasn't written in a vacuum but is the result ofa perceived need, and the author's experience in meeting that need.Co-author Michelle Secic has also contributed with her expertise, making ita valuable book for people in this field.

Slow and cumbersome to use. Does not integrate well with MS Word, operating almost as its own software as opposed to an add-on. Online tutorials from Purdue University or the APA Style Helper book would be much more useful and not slow down your computer or cause you (trick you) into losing your work.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS
I'm studying to be a Social Worker, and this software would have made typing papers easier... had it worked. I downloaded the software to see how it worked, and not only was the demo not fully functional, but was also no uninstallable, either with the Control Panel or with System Suite. I had to delete the folder that was created when I installed the program.

APA Help wasn't much help
Not only is the software not very user friendly, including a help system that was not designed to answer the users questions, but the software crashed my computer. ... Read more

good guided tour of cost-effectiveness analyses
This book was really well-written in that everything was laid out clearly and consistently. I could basically choose my level of involvement, since the author explicitly delineates what each chapter and each exercise is for. The book was especially helpful in helping me choose which statistical methods of analysis would best fit the data set and research question I was working on; no other books I looked up did this in a readable way. Also, what really impressed me is the fact that the book made all the exercises not only seem, but actually feel, easy (or at least logical), and it wasn't until the end that I realized that I had built a decent foundation in cost-effectiveness analysis. Good Reference
A statistician might find Gehlbach's explanations a bit too simplistic, but I think it gives a fantastic overview of how to approach interpretation of journal articles.An attending asked us to buy the second edition of this book when I was a 3rd Year med student, and I still use it today teaching residents.He does an excellent job using examples from the literature to illustrate his points.And, unlike other statistical texts, the index can help you grasp topics like the null hypothesis or type I error very quickly. ...
