Who would have thought there was a craft to writing?
The goal of writing in science is to communicate information.Unfortunately too many people in science, including myself, write in a manner that is little more than unintelligible.I now feel sorry for the people who had to read my work having read this book.Too much scientific literature is poorly crafted and it is only natural that newcomers to science emulate this poor style.
points out technical writing ruts & shows a better way
I've had this book for many years, and I still pull it out to use it.It is a light read, and not the style guide of other technical writing manuals.What is unique is that it points out the usual ruts we all get into, like redundant or overly complicated sentence construction.By giving 'before' and 'after' writing samples, it is easy to see how much better a few changes make.I have gotten more out of this book, in terms of being a better technical writer (I'm a systems engineer), than I have out of any other book.I also like the reference section in the back about proper word usage (ex: affect vs effect).The book also covers illustration do's and don'ts.If you want style guide info, you will have to look elsewhere.But to improve the clarity of your writing, this is the book to get.

Very useful book.
Substantial book, with lots of actual examples of both good and bad scientific writing to learn from (you will learn about solar power plants!).Practical advice galore.My only minor quibble is that it does seem like a monograph (which it is), and thus is only one person's opinions about some key issues that are subjective in nature, such as how to deal with 'writer's block'. ... Very thick, thorough book--could be research textbook
I kept this book for the longest time while I was working on my dissertation (as adjunct faculty I could keep for semester and renew for semesters as long as noone else requested it. Strangely, nobody did.)It is an excellent collection of articles, essays, etc for a researcher. It covers a large scope of topics and the articles are solidly written by excellent researchers.

Extremely Board Specific
I first encountered this book when it was called "Biostatistics for the Boards" when I took the course from Dr. Glaser when he was teaching at the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine in 1990. Dr. Glaser was an exceptionally good and popular teacher and the book reflects his "no-nonsense" style. At first I thought it was a "dumbed down" statistics book as I had taken a full year of stats in college and my previous books had been huge and heavy textbooks. However, I soon found that the reason Dr. Glaser's book was so brief was that he concentrates only on the type of concepts and questions you will find on the USMLE step 1. The chapters are short and it is easy to review each one many times to firmly plant the info into long term memory. I had no problems at all with the stats on the USMLE. This book presents exactly what you need to answer all the questions on the USMLE without having you waste a lot of time studying things you will never use.

Are you one of those people that are scared of Biostatistics? Fear no more!! This book is for you. It explains everything in a very smart and simple way. Plenty of examples and tests help you to master the subject. If you study this book well, you will "understand" biostatistics and you don't have to memorize nonsense informations. two thumbs up!

Well I'll be damned
I got a first edition, hardcover version of this book from the booth of an 'alternative health' organistion, in a fair in Belgium back in 96. I bought it out of sheer curiosity, not being aware at the time that a dissident movement even existed on the AIDS question. Well, after spending a couple days and nights glued to thie book, I can say that my view of AIDS and the health-business environnement around it changed drastically. Of course as a non-scientist it's impossible for me to prove or disprove anything Duesberg says, but if he wasn't being serious, why would a high-flyer like him (and other co-authors such as Nobel Prize G. Mullis) stick his neck out like that? I'm convinced.

A classic of political agenda masquerading as science
If it was possible, I would rate this item even lower than this.This books is a classic example of a political agenda triumphing over scientific fact.All of of the data that Duesberg claims supports his assertion is either cherry-picked and presented out of context, is from questionable sources, or is simply outdated and supplanted by more solid scientific research.What little reliable data he uses actually fails to support, or even refutes his claims when viewed in it's original context.

At Least I Can Search
The previous reviewer's complaint about only being able to view one numbered topic at a time is a legitimate inconvenience. It's easy enough to click once to move to the next numbered topic, but it would be nicer to be able to view a screenful at a time. I also find the on-screen print to be much too small. You can change that in the View options, but the setting isn't sticky. It has to be reset every time you load the program. Dang!
A Sad Disappointment
As a heavy user of the Chicago Manual of Style (I own multiple copies of the 15th edition in cloth), I've been eagerly awaiting this long-delayed CD-ROM version ever since it was first announced two or more years ago.When I saw that it was finally available, I quickly ordered a copy and loaded it onto my hard drive.Alas, the University of Chicago Press has botched a wonderful opportunity.The software implementation permits users to read only a single numbered paragraph of the book at a time: those who know the print edition will readily understand that having to click one's mouse repeatedly to move from paragraph 17:148 to 17:149 to 17:150, each occupying just a few lines on separate screens, is an unbelievably cumbersome way to use this essential reference tool (to say nothing of being an invitation to carpal tunnel syndrome!).The Press has essentially made it impossible to browse the book, or to read it continuously, probably because the designers were concerned not to undermine sales of the print version.By working so hard not to compete with their own book sales, though, they've virtually guaranteed that almost no one will want to purchase this extremely hobbled digital version, at least not once users have tried it for themselves or heard from colleagues how awful the implementation is.If you've been awaiting this CD-ROM version as long as I have, I'm afraid you'll be as unhappy as I am that we'll have to wait still longer for a usable digital version of one of the most important reference works in all of American publishing.I would strongly advise AGAINST purchasing this product until the Press does a better job of implementing the software so that users can read chapters continuously. ... And the winner is...
There are two modern books in the field. This one by Profs Zhou, Obuchowski,McClish and the book by Prof. Pepe. All four are experts in this field. Both books present the same aspects of statistical diagnostic testing and both can be of invaluable help for researchers (both applied and more academic) and graduate students. However, Professor Pepe has done an excellent job (if I may) using a clear, concise notation and language throughout. On the other hand this book (ZOM) is not that well written, giving more weight in the presentation of the personal research of the authors. As a result there is some notation inconsistency (not too puzzling though) and the flow of the text is not that smooth. Both books have full reference lists, they present interesting applications and give a number of exercises at the end of each chapter. ... Read more

MUST HAVE!
This is a must have book for behavioral science and epidemiology - use this book to study for the course and also to study for step 1. The thumbnail tables are excellent and focuses on exactly what you need to know/what is frequently tested. Each topic is concise and to the point.You get exactly what you need to know.The reason why I gave it four stars instead of five is that it does not have a lot of review questions to solidify what you have learned, but there are a few questons after every topic that is covered.This book is written so well that you are able to understand and retain the information pretty well.Many times in behavioral science courses students are assigned some pretty thick texts to read out of, so if you are scrambling for a behavioral science and epidemiology book that is right to the point and provides you with a great foundation in this subject I highly recommend getting this text.

OUTSTANDING RESOURCE FOR PSYCHIATRY and EPIDEMIOLOGY
There are books that you use in order to learn course material. Then there are books that captivate you and impart their knowledge onto you for a lifetime. Neugroschl and Hoblyn's excellent Blueprints Notes and Cases in Behavioral Science and Epidemiology is quiet simply the model of review books. The authors' comprehensive brilliance is displayed in page after page of thoughtful and thought-provoking material, which provides thorough coverage of all vital and relevant information, yet never treads into the dark realm of minutiae. The book is brilliantly organized into unique and classic cases with case-based questions that are nearly identical to the Psychiatry Shelf and Step 2 questions. My score on Step 2 was a whopping 284 - and I scored in the 100% and 99%, respectively, on the Behavioral Science and Epidemiology sections. The only book I used throughout my Psychiatry rotation and to prepare for Step 2 was this book. Beyond scores though, this book has made me a more competent clinician. My approach and management of psychiatric patients borders on brilliance, thanks in large part to this text. It covers the whole spectrum of disorders and virtually every reasonable and widely accepted treatment. The format and syntax of the text is rapidly consumed, easily assimilated, and effectively recalled. I recall passages and examples wholly intact, and use the wisdom in patient managament daily. I am going into emergency medicine and have used suggestions from the book repeatedly in management of many diverse patients since the completion of my psychiatry rotation. The epidemiology portion is similarly outstanding. It teaches epidemiological principles and stastical analysis in an intelligent, thorough, and useful fahsion, and will make you an adept and critical analyst of the medical literature. I have two PhD candidate colleagues who use this book as their primary resource for understanding and evaluating the medical literature and for designing their own protocols. Read more
