4-0 out of 5 stars Poetry, immunology, and faith
This book, written in a beautiful, almost poetic prose, is engrossing, informative, and covered commonalities of the immune system, human behavior, genetics, family relations, faith, reason and science.I particularly liked the parallels between paranoia and immune system. In paranoia, the mind views almost everything as a threat, and may even inflict damage on innocent parties. In the latter the body attacks itself and other non-threats, causing injury to itself. Also, the details on how the immune system "remembers" and how the various organs police the system was fascinating. Not all of the personal family story snippets tied strongly to the central theme, but all were excellent writing and emotionally powerful.Anyone wanting to expand their horizons and view the world from a unique viewpoint could do well to read Callahan's fine book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Who would've thought?
I didn't know a darn thing about the immune system, and it wasn't high on my list of must-research material, but this book is the best one I've read this year. What an amazing book! Absolutely fascinating -- and not just for science minded folks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stimulating, educational & almost mystical, EXCELLENT
Callahan is that genre of author I like to describe as "scientifically based mystic."Scientist in that, true to his craft, he primarily uses the scientific method to probe the answers to life in the biological sense.Mystic in that he recognizes that science can provide many wonderful answers and statistics, but seldom the "meta" answers man has yearned for since we can remember. 3-0 out of 5 stars Just mediocre.
I was anxious to receive this book, since it was praised as one of the best books available in the area of environmental microbiology. After reading through the pages, I just couldn't agree with this statement. 5-0 out of 5 stars Environmental Microbiology
This is one of the most detailed, interesting, well illustrated books in microbiology that I have ever read. It gets right to the information that someone working in the environmental field needs, all in one place. No more digging around through multiple sources and hunting the internet for the latest information - its all here. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An easy-to-read prescription..
...from a very wise doctor.Gathering readers around her kitchen table, Dr. Remen takes an indirect but inspiring approach to those of us who sometimes prefer to avoid the doctor's office.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Inspirational
I read this book shortly after my daughter was born 14 weeks (approx. 100 days) premature last April. The stories Dr. Remen recounts in her books were very inspirational and helped my husband and me to be there for our daughter during her 3 month stay in the NICU. I found it hard, on some days, to cope with my daughter's condition as it rollercoastered from not so bad to absolutely horrifying and reading the stories really helped put perspective in what we were going through. I honestly don't think I would've survived being a NICU mom without having read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book For Those Searching for Something
I really enjoyed this book and first read it in 1999 when I was having my "quarter life" crisis. After having two babies back to back and mourning my loss of identity, I found myself re-reading the book. The stories still comforted me and were still relevant 6 years later. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introductory text
This is an excellent introduction to Bioinformatics. It does assume some very basic knowledge of biology- perhaps a couple of paragraphs could help the total newbies.
5-0 out of 5 stars great beginner
In spite of the title (I don't know many dummies interested in multiple sequence alignments) this reference is written by experts in the field of bioinformatics and is very accessable for the beginner.I purchased this book as a beginning graduate student so that I could learn which programs to use to compare amino acid and nucleic acid sequences as well as prepare them for publication and this book was perfect for this end. This text doesn't delve into the algorithms or much theory (which is learned through practice and other sources), nevertheless, I recommend this for the researcher for a crash course or quick reference. This book really helped me get my feet wet in this area (and recently publish a nice alignment) and will certainly reduce my workload next semester for my bioinformatics course!

3-0 out of 5 stars misleading title ....
The tile might be misleading.

4-0 out of 5 stars Yes, it gives wise advice!
Mostly common sense, but great way to start out your practicing career fresh out of residency!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Psychiatrist Review
This book really "works"-it's getting rid of the stress in my medical practice. The text is fast reading, no-balony, actually entertaining-loaded with great examples, quotes, and vignettes that drive home the many pearls (and a fair scattering of diamonds) or practical wisdom.I was immediately able to tell this book was written by practicing docs just like me:no wheezy absrtractions, no boring theory-mongoring, and no long lists of desirable (but impossible-to -achieve) "ideal" practices.Instead this is smart, practical stuff I have been able to use immediately to save myself hassles and wasted time/motion/effort.I highly recommend to all physicians the section on how to leverage your relationships to produce more, and also the section on continuing education, which was an eye-opener for me.I personally feel that every practicing physician should have a copy of this book, and use what's in it.Get this book today-it will work for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars for neophytes

5-0 out of 5 stars The ONLY Authoritative Chinese Nutrition Resource I have been able to find!
This book is THE BEST book on chinese nutrition I have ever been able to find! The author is a Licensed Acupuncurist and a Medical Doctor from Germany and extremely detailed, thorough, and organized. There are chapters explaining Traditional Chinese Medicine Theory, General Nutrition, Common Disease Patterns and Food Treatment, Individual Food Therapeutics, Case Studies, Food Tables by Energetics, and Food Tables by Name. I'm in love with this book! It is easy to use, and very practical! A must have for your library if you like nutrition, chinese medicine, or just want to treat health problems naturally with food! Try it out! You won't regret it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Helpful Reference
Our family has recently seen a Chinese nutritionist to help my son's acne and my daughter's digestive problems. This philosophy of eating is in juxtaposition to the typical American diet we have consumed all our lives, so this book was helpful in clarifying instructions from our nutritionist. The philosophy of Chinese medicine is well explained, even for a newcomer like me.It explains what foods are acceptable, in what combination, with what health problems. It was interesting to learn how climate changes affect the foods you should be eating. Much of the book is actually written for the use of a nutritionist, with notes on which herbs to prescribe. The book is well organized, making it easy to look up certain foods or food types. Overall, I would recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars substantial effort
If you are a practitioner of TCM looking for a text that is theoretically sound and clinically relevant, look no further. Its modern layout, use of currently accepted terminology and comprehensiveness make this book a great leap forward for education and practice in TCM Nutrition. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars the other white matter
Michael Gershon is apparently the father of neurogastroenterology, the science behind the "brain" that resides in the digestive system. This second brain is just like the first one, being composed of the same types of cells and using the same neurotransmitters.Consequently both brains are affected by many of the same drugs and diseases, even though they operate largely independently.
5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful and fascinating read....
Michael Gershon is a gifted writer and equally gifted scientist. He takes the world of the gut and explains its workings in great detail eliminating historical misunderstandings and common misperceptions along the way.
4-0 out of 5 stars peristaltic reflex or peristaltic cognition?
This has been a challenging book to read, but well worth the effort. It is a peculiar mix of memoir and introductory textbook on the enteric (gut) system. I found myself woefully unprepared to consume the text.Gershon has tried to write for the lay reader, but that lay reader had better be comfortable with organic chemistry. Despite the jargon, Gershon's enthusiasm is infectious. This would be a great gift for any pre-med student in need of inspiration.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bowes & Church's Food Values of Portions Commonly Used
This book has good information, however, is not very useful for vegetarians or people who use frozen meals. There have been several food items that I looked up and could not find.It has more detail than the average person needs.

3-0 out of 5 stars 18th Edition Commentary
Compared to past editions, the newest one is more comprehensive. For example, analytical data is provided for each food item under salicylic acid, whereas past editions grouped foods by salicylate content categories. The only negative for me is the tiny print.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Resource!
I purchased this book several years ago when I started counting carbohydrates.A nutritionist recommened it as being the most comprehensive resource of its kind.I have found it invaluable. The fact that is not only contains prepackaged food, but fresh foods, meats, homemade items and even some common restaurants (along with many many other catagories), makes it THE perfect resource. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Ground Breaking Research; Vital Information
This is a book that can be life changing. It's extremely solid, clearly written, for the lay person, and fully documented, and it concerns Dr. Stoll's claims as to the benefits of taking Omega-3 oil supplements. It was recommended to me by a Nurse Practitioner at the Hospital Clinic where I go for regular medical care, and it has caused a revolution in my life.We live in a wilderness of self help and health care books that can confuse us and numb us with their contradictory claims. But be assured this book is a thorough and brilliant record of the results of actual medical research. Dr. Stoll's work with Omega-3was done at Harvard, and he knows whereof he speaks. He is not the only one recommending that we take Omega-3 supplements to make up for the deficiencies in our "modern"diet.Indeed many many doctors are now talking about this, and word can not spread too fast.Read this book. And take it from this reader: there is indeed a profound" Omega-3 connection, " and it's vital that we avail ourselves of this substance for better health.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best discovery for everyone
This is one of those books where after you read it your life style will change. We spend billions of dollars on health care at the treatment level when we should be focusing on the cause.

5-0 out of 5 stars Historical foundation
I would strongly recommend this book to anyone wanting a historical perspective of the development of psychoanalytic theory. This book takes you through different offsprings of psychoanalysis beginning with Freud's contribution. It also offers a comparison of each new theory with classic Freudian psychoanalytic thought so you have an idea of which aspects were further developed and which ones were "trashed."It's a good foundational book for anyone beginning an interest in psychoanalysis.

1-0 out of 5 stars "and Beyond" could have been a good read....
This could have been a valuable reference. The front cover lists 39 names, some well known, others so obscure as to invite interests to learn more.Try to find these 39 when opening the book.Only in the Index. At least two pages, as chapters, should have provided insight into the thoughts of these 39 names who appeared under the caption, "A History of Modern Psychoanalytic Throught."However, Chapter headings only cover Freud, Sullivan, Klein, Fairbairn/Winnicott, Erikson/Kohut, and Kernberg/Schafer/Loewald/Lacan--and that's it.Eleven theorists.
5-0 out of 5 stars Pschoanalysis in Layman's terms
Very good book for someone who is just learning about pschoanalysis.Good examples of clinical application and a very common sense approach to psychology.A much easier read than other texts such as The Freud Reader.Good stuff. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Worsley followers pay attention ...
Unschuld is a scholar, a genuine translator that doesn't leave much to the imagination. His understanding of the cultural contexts (as there are many) in which TCM grew are un-matched in terms of written text.Get his books, if not for the honest look he takes at TCM, but for the fact that his works are the bread and butter of TCM.The gross ignorance of the classics among so called "Doctors of TCM" in the western world is amazing.Don't guess about TCM, either learn to read Chinese or get good translations of the classics. Not pocket translations at a American grade five reading level. If we expect people to view us as Doctors, we should study like one.
5-0 out of 5 stars essential reading
This book is the most profound, deep work that has ever been done on this book. As practitioners of Chinese medicine we allways read and give attention to the two books of the Huang Ti Nei Ching, the Su Wen and the Ling Shu. The nan Ching is a must for every Chinese Medicine practitioner.
