5-0 out of 5 stars Worsley Followers Pay Attention ...
Unschuld is a scholar, a genuine translator that doesn't leave much to the imagination. His understanding of the cultural contexts (as there are many) in which TCM grew are un-matched in terms of written text.Get his books, if not for the honest look he takes at TCM, but for the fact that his works are the bread and butter of TCM.The gross ignorance of the classics among so called "Doctors of TCM" in the western world is amazing.Don't guess about TCM, either learn to read Chinese or get good translations of the classics. Not pocket translations at a American grade five reading level. If we expect people to view us as Doctors, we should study like one.
5-0 out of 5 stars Milestone
This book is a milestone for those of us who wish to understand Chinese medicine. As others have noted, this is not a translation of the Su Wen, but a thorough commentary. I consider it a necessary introduction before attempting to read the translation. Once Unschuld's translation is released, I will feel more prepared to grasp the meaning behind the text. Unschuld is an expert in this field and I'm not sure what a previous reviewer meant by self appointed. I think his experience, education, previous works, and position as director of his academic department speak for themselves! If you wish to go deeper into your understanding of the medicine, buy this book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Lost in the Contradictions of Misunderstanding
Robert Feld is welcome to embrace Unschuld's highly scholarly, hard to read, disjointed text. My primary point is that this is NOT the Nei Jing, it is not the text, it is not readable as such, and it is not a guide for would-be doctors interested in practicing based on Nei Jing. That much should be more clear in the description of the book, but it is not. It should be called "Essays on Nei Jing."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Readable, in-depth discussion of nutrition and metabolism.
Currently, many people are becoming seriously interested in the role of nutrition in human health. Fortunately, there are many good books on nutrition and health for the interested lay person. But once one begins to understand the extreme importance of nutrition for achieving and maintaining good health where can a seriously interested lay person turn for more detailed information? The answer is to this book. Yes, this book requires some serious study, but it is quite well written and does not require a degree in chemistry or biology to follow. A dilligent lay person can gain much valuable information from it. If you are really serious about understanding the role of nutrition in human health I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best advanced nutrition book I know.
If you want (or need) to go deep into nutrition, this is the book. Very well organized and researched information. Covers in depth nutritional physiology and biochemistry. I used this book in an advanced undergraduate nutrition course and I consider it one of my prized possessions. If there is a better book on the subject, I would like to know about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best biochemical nutrition textbook!
I am a graduate student who majors in Nutrition. This is a best biochemical nutrition textbook I ever read! What I like about this textbook is: (1) relatively light weight (575 pages) for this type of textbook, yet very comprehensive. It contains from basic physiology and biochemistry to a current field such as antioxidant nutrition; (2) a large amount of well summarized figures (almost every page has al least one figure); (3) plain English; (4) each chapter concludes with annotated bibliography so that you could use this book as a sort of literature review on a specific field; (5) well-made index, so that you could use this as a sort of encyclopedia of nutrition. Title says "advanced", but I recommend this book to undergraduate students who look for explanation on the biochemistry basis in the nutrition field. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Guy meals on the grill
This sturdy paperboard cookbook, presented by Men's Health magazine, is geared for guys who are novices at cooking and looking for easy meals to prepare on the grill. These 50 recipes, each of which is enhanced with ingredients out of cans, include beef, chicken, fish, pizza, pork, Spam, turkey, and veggies. Among the recipes are beer-can chicken, red-hot ribs, Dr Pepper-glazed ham, teriyaki turkey, and spuds on a stick.5-0 out of 5 stars The secret is the can!
Let's face it, we all love being a little creative in the kitchen or around the grill every now and then. Who would have thought ordinary canned cola or beer would add great taste to the best meats on the grill? Mix a budweiser with worcestershire sauce, grilling mix, and a small jar of chopped jalapenos and you have a wild barbecue mix making you believe you may be out in the Caribbeans. Or a can of sloppy joe barbecue sauce mixed with jalapenos. There are recipes a plenty guaranteed to fire up your taste buds.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Hard to read but book compiled with great care and detail
I must agree, it is probabily not the easiest book, you can pick up and read. It is voluminous, information is very dry, might be difficult to 'make notes' from this book. It may not be structured the way, you might normally find in most of the textbook. But having said that the information is compiled with great care and extraordinary detail. It contains the cutting edge information you can find out about biomaterials. For example, each section made up of 10-15 pages is purely written straight out of the latest journal articles.
2-0 out of 5 stars Biomedical Engineering Student
...I was not impressed with the content of this book because of mistakes made in the data it reported ie. that polymers can't form crystalline structures. I also found that the equations presented in the text did not have detailed information and at times the explaination of how to use the equations were slight.5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book for beginners and advanced students
This is a well written book with something for just about everyone. There are parts geared directly to engineers, but issues like foreign body response are dealt with rigorously enough for the best bio geek. All classes of implantable devices are covered with a healthy dose of historyto boot! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Job
The book promised an intro to nanotechnology and that's what it delivered. A fairly nontechnical, but graphic representation of a new science. If someone wants a thourough education buy a textbook. If you want an intro into one of the most promising new fields without a 400 page manual, this is a good place to start. The previous reviewer is a moron. Read the cover before you buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Next Big Idea
Great job organizing such sciency material in easy, yet educational format! Some of the best in the field recommended this read. The author's analogies and content are accurate. This book gives the reader a toolset of knowledge to expand on.Regardless of ones background, this technology is worth knowing about. With a background as a manufacturing engineer, I don't fit into the traditional chemistry and biology scene.I look at this area and see untraditional manufacturing processes that people need to know about. When these processes come out of research, and into the manufacturing sector there are going to be serious manufacturing challenges. This book has helped me solidify my interest within this field.

Dan Ratner: A man with brains and one hot body! He's got it all! I have had the pleasure of meeting this young and "yummy" hunk after the release of his book. 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic look into Chinese Medicine's early history
Professor Harper in this text takes a detailed look at the contents and historical significance of the Ma Wang Dui medical manuscripts. These manuscripts were unearthed in China in the early 1970's and represent an extant completely unedited group of medical writings from about 2,000 years ago.

3-0 out of 5 stars Technically sound, but editoriallynot honest
As a biologist currently employed as Group Product Manager in a leading pharma/biotech company (top 5 worldwide), I'm interested in progressive developments of nanotechnology applications to medicine.
5-0 out of 5 stars A timely contribution to nanotechnology literature.
Once again Robert A. Freitas, Jr. has turned out a remarkable volume of information (similar to Nanomedicine Volume 1).It is probably useful to have read Nanomedicine Volume 1 before reading Volume IIA, but Volume IIA can be read on its own particularly if one has a biological or medical education. Its emphasis is on whether we can expect nanotechnology based devices to be able to operate within the human body but it also deals with whether or not certain aspects of nanotechnology might be dangerous to biological life in general.I thought the aspects of the book that identified the areas where we lack knowledge at this time to be particularly useful. They pointed out topics that still need to be researched. The book is excellent in suggesting solutions for problems we can anticipate at this time in the area of biocompatibility.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars For a medical student, not a bad book.
One's opinion on this book depends your purpose. This is not a comprehensive histology text, nor is it an atlas of histology.Graduate students in anatomy or histology will be disappointed.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best BASIC Histology book
For sure this is the best BASIC Histology book ever...if you do want some deep treatment about the topic, go search another book...but for what it intends to discuss (the basic concepts of human body tissues science), the book is explendid. Please, DO NOT compare this book with a non basic book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some pros and cons
fThis book is probably fine as an introductory text, but I was looking for something a little more rigorous. Also, the plates weren't as nice as other histology books I'd seen, which someone else here mentioned also. I don't know if that was just my copy of the book or a problem with all of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book
I wish I'd come across this book years ago.Medical schools should have a mandatory class built around this book.Reading it I constantly found myself amazed at how similar the accounts of other medical marriage were to my own.I'd find my physician husband's behaviors, opinions, attitudes, etc. common to many other physicians in the book and my own frustrations, worries, behaviors mirrored by many of the physician wives in the book as well. The book classifies medical marriages into 8 categories (male physician married to at-home wife, female physician married to non-physician, two married physicians, etc.)I was surprised at how closely our category tagged our relationship's problems, strengths, needs.I do wish they'd gone into more detail on how to handle the various problems, ways to avoid the common pitfalls, etc.I plan on lending it to a friend where both husband and wife are physicians.

5-0 out of 5 stars Relief
No doubt ~ it was a relief to read we weren't the only ones.Medical marriages are without question wound together tightly by stress, partly due to the job, and partly due to the type of personality the job attracts (the best docs out there seem to have a degree of OCD, which interestingly often contributes to their success).
5-0 out of 5 stars there is a reason that the AMA commissioned this book--medical marriages can be difficult
Separate sections for the male as the physician, the female as the physician, and when both are physicians are presented.Whatever your circumstance, it is very useful to see your relationship difficulties in terms of the problems that others are undoubtedly experiencing. You can benefit from the authors' useful ideas for best managing typical conflicts, without blaming yourself or your spouse. The authors note that all counseling, reimbursed by US-based health insurance, involves assigning a psychiatric pathology label. This process, alone, is likely to be iatrogenic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Centuries and Centuries of Medical Failure
We are proud of humanity's progress in medicine. We like our doctors; they are consistently among the professions that the public trusts the most. There are countless books on histories of medicine, citing a proud tradition from Hippocrates on down to the latest in gene therapy.Doctors gradually but eagerly advanced to take in new techniques and new science to get us where we are today.Except this did not happen."For 2,400 years patients have believed that doctors were doing them good; for 2,300 years they were wrong."The unsparingly pessimistic view of the overwhelming failures of doctors is that of David Wootton, a professor of history who has written _Bad Medicine: Doctors Doing Harm Since Hippocrates_ (Oxford University Press). The world has adopted the scientific method as the way of getting information and using it, but before the dawn of germ theory, there was only a firm hold on medical traditions, and the traditions were wrong.Even worse, in many cases medical treatment became more dangerous over time, as in the case of nineteenth century hospitals causing the deaths of mothers in childbirth far more effectively than independent midwives could do.This is a grim story, and if we are past the centuries of medicine-as-tradition, there are still reasons to think that doctors may be addicted to doing the things they do because that's what they have always done.
