5-0 out of 5 stars Every doctor should read this book !
Many doctors take their communication skills for granted, but the sad fact remains that most of us do not do a good job talking to our patients. Learning how to improve your bedside manner is extremely difficult to do, but this book shows you how you can do so. Reading this book is likely to be one of the best investments of your time you can make - and it's full of practically useful stuff you can implement immediately !

5-0 out of 5 stars A patient's point of view
I'm not a doctor, but I'm often a patient. This book has shown me how to communicate better with my doctor. In fact, I think it has excellent and helpful information for everyone, as we all try to make others understand our desires and comply with them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Immediately usable information
What I liked best about Communicating with Today's Patient:The practical suggestions that can be used often and right away. For example, when broaching a difficult subject, ask "What has been your experience with (topic)?"This gives you a reading on the patient's perspective and prevents incorrect assumptions. Dozens of techniques like this make the reader a better communicator right away. Two thumbs up! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Only people that has right to say anything about these drugs are the people that have taken them
Some people think they are so smart that they know everything about these drugs and chemistry, no matter how smart you are and lets say youre #1 top psychiatrists in the world. If you havent taken the SSRI yourself and experienced the damaging affect of these drugs, you cant say anything PERIOD. Not even if you invented the drug !!!!! Why do we have so many people complaining about these drugs? duh maybe because there is a problem and causing problems!!!, people who havent tried or experience the damaging affects afterwards dont see why people are complaining. We dont see books about warning people not to take for example flu shots do we? No. I used to be one of those people who believed and that popping a pill can solve my life problems but Now because of SSRI my life is ruined and have permanant problems that wont go away. And for people who are currently on SSRI, pills will never ever cure depression unless you stay on them forever,Im sure you are happy with those fake smiles, see what happens when you taper off of them. And people who are FOR these drugs should immediately go to doctors and try them and see how safe they are. I recommend you try prozac first. If that dont work out dont worry there are plenty others that doctors will want you to try. HAHAHA so sad that there are still people out there in this country that really believe these pills can help them.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Psychiatric Patient's Viewpoint
Having suffered 2 major depressive episodes in the last 6 years, I can assure those who swallow Breggin's nonsense hook, line and sinker that nobody could have "talked" me back to anything resembling "health."The mental anguish I suffered during those episodes was unbearable and waiting for a quack like Breggin to use psychoanalysis or some other form of talk therapy to provide any relief would have taken far too long.Financial and insurance considerations aside, talk therapies alone are simply too slow to achieve positive results.
5-0 out of 5 stars Argh!
I couldn't resist writing this. The ad hominem abusive, straw man, slippery slope and other fallacies running rampant in some of the other reviews are just ridiculous!

Jo Robinson has done the research and it is enlightening. We have come so far from the days of the family farm and we haven't a clue.I am not a vegetarian but you can bet I won't be eating supermarket meat any longer, especially chicken (including eggs).Read the book to find out why (with scientific studies) organics, even more importantly pasture raised meat products are healthier for us.It is a quick and easy read because it does not take long to uncover the truth. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Only Way I've Ever Been Able to Lose Weight!
I have tried literally every diet book out there - Fat Flush, South Beach, Zone, Body For Life - and Weight Watchers numerous times. The only diet that has ever worked for me is SMD.I went on it in desperation 3 years ago and lost 25 lbs in about 6 weeks.I kept all the weight off until I got pregnant two years ago. With 15 baby pounds left to lose, I'm going back on next week!
5-0 out of 5 stars Review of The Complete Scarsdale Medical Diet:Plus Dr. Tarnower' Lifetime Keep-Slim Program
This book contains the "original" low carb diet. If you read the book and follow the plan carefully you will have excellent results.I have followed the medical diet for the full 14 days, used the "keep-slim" plan to follow and have enjoyed success with it. You are never hungry and your carbohydrate cravings disappear almost immediately! There are very helpful aids to keep you "on track". Many questions and answers regarding the diet are covered throughout the book!I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Acknowledgement Review
Dr. Tarnower created what might be the worlds healthiest diet back in the late 1970's. Since he was a cardiologist his primary concern was, of course, with the ticker. The book is written in plain english so lay persons, like myself, may understand it. The only problem I have is with who is given the very first acknowledgement in the begining of the book. Jean Harris is thanked for her help with getting the book published. Since Jean Harris is also the person who shot Dr. Tarnower five times, and eventhough this sounds redondant I will say it anyway, and killed him, one year after the book was published, I see no reason why the acknowledgement to her was not deleted from all future printings.

Editorial Review

No small themes for historian William McNeill: he is a writer of big, sweeping books, from Read more

Reviews (40)

4-0 out of 5 stars Bugs, germs and parasites
Long before Jared Diamond captured headlines and dominated bestseller lists with 'Gun, Germs and Steel," the distinguished University of Chicago historian William McNeill published "Plagues and Peoples" that carried a similar message, albeit heavily focused on the "germs" part of the equation.
4-0 out of 5 stars wordy, interesting
William Mcneill presents a different and mind-expanding take on disease: microbes, humans, and governments all function similarly to facilitate their optimal survival and expansion. When the opportunistic structure gets too greedy, it may overwhelm the host. With time and familiarity, host and parasite usually come to an uneasy alliance, which allows the survival of each.If you read "Plagues and Peoples" with this thesis in mind, it is a very interesting book.If you lose sight of the thesis, it is too easy to get bogged down in the author's extremely baroque writing style.A few reviewers concluded that the book was hard for them to comprehend because they were high school aged readers. As an older adult, compulsive reader, with a lot of patience, I have to say I experienced the same problem with this book.I checked the biographical material on the author to see if English was his second language.I felt the book read as if translated.I found myself mentally simplifying almost every sentence, not because of the complexity of the idea being conveyed, but because of unnecessary verbage."Plagues and Peoples" does contain loads information on the history of mankind and disease, within the framework of an interesting thesis.I just feel that simpler wording would have helped the book read smoother. Another very fascinating history of man's interaction with microbes which is much more reader friendly is "Men and Microbes".

4-0 out of 5 stars Epidemic is historic
I bought this book from Amazon, and I read it here, in Brazil. This book is really good, about this subject. In fact, epidemic killed far more peoples than all wars and dictators together.Lenin or Hitler were small killers than smallpox. In fact, smallpox exterminated, more than 70% of indian population of Mexico in XVI Century.Illness decided wars, religions, poltics and economics for all the history.

3-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the CGI could have been omitted?
This is the sequel to his earlier beginner's book on Perl. Now, he goes further into usages of Perl. While experienced programmers will not find these terribly challenging, they are not the intended audience.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Companion text
This first half of the book focuses entirely on Object-Oriented(OO) Perl. The second half follows up with a general survey of various perl implementations of particular programming issues involving databasing, cgi, graphics, modules, etc, and BioPerl.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, leads to others for true mastery
Published in late 2003, this clearly-written book picks up where "Beginning Perl for Bioinformatics" leaves off.Perl is very commonly used in the field of bioinformatics, and this book does a good job of surveying the more advanced topics in perl from the bioinformatics point-of-view.For a more thorough treatment of each of these topics though, the student will need to explore more specialized titles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb biography
This biography of John Hunter is superb. It should be required reading for every first year medical student. Wendy Moore has captured all the important details of this great man's life and his incredible accomplishments. Perhaps the inspiration for Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde, the story of John Hunter, at least as told by Wendy Moore, is fascinating. Be prepared to spend some time - the book is hard to put down. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "They don't make scalpels with training wheels."
"Hot Lights, Cold Steel," by Michael J. Collins, is a fascinating account of the making of an orthopedic surgeon.Collins starts his residency at Rochester's prestigious Mayo Clinic with deep feelings of insecurity. In fact, he dispiritedly dubs himself "the dullest scalpel in the drawer."Unlike his fellow residents, Collins, an Irish Catholic from Chicago's West Side, did not do multiple rotations in orthopedics while in medical school, conducted no research, and wrote no scientific papers.Instead, he worked on a loading dock to make ends meet.To his credit, however, Collins has energy, intelligence, ambition, and perseverance.
4-0 out of 5 stars Reality
The thing I loved most about this book is that it is REAL and it is HONEST.It's not exactly glamourous...and that attributes to the book's success.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best...
I have read a lot of these types of books about "what it is really" like and this is one of the best. It is laugh out loud funny at times and heartbreaking at other times. I think it really does show what life in a residency is like and the dynamics between the different types of physicians are like. The rivalry between "fleas" (Internal Meds) and the "jocks" or "mechanics"(surgeons)is dead on. I showed it to some of my colleagues and they laughed and said "So true". Check this book out. It reads really fast and is worth it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Frank Cooper - Australia
This is a valuable book for the layperson and professional, for the understanding of the complexities and properties of vitamins and minerals. However this book is now 10 years old and showing signs of age, and would benefit from a significant update, as some of the information is no longer applicable.
5-0 out of 5 stars If you have one book on nutritional supplements, this should be it.
This isn't the latest, but it's the best. If you have one book on nutritional supplements, this should be it. I'd read it before your first, next, or whatever visit to the nutritional supplement store or aisle.

5-0 out of 5 stars There is no limit to how much younger and better you can feel
An excellent reference on Nutritional Supplementation. If you are looking to supplement your daily exercise routine, support your diet, or just for a reference to stay healthy the natural way, this book is for you.
