Editorial Review

In the foreword to this expanded edition of his 1979 masterpiece, Horace Freeland Judson says, "I feared I might seem the official historian of the movement"--molecular biology, that is. If by official he means "authoritative; definitive; the standard against which all others are measured" then his fears are warranted.Detailed without being overly technical, humane without being fulsome, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
Judson tells the story of the birth of molecular biology and giants who nurtured it. Insightful not just of the challenges of the science itself but also of the lives of the many who shaped it. It instilled a deep sense of appreciation in me for the efforts of the many scientists involved in shaping the field of molecular biology without the aid of the modern tools and techniques we scientists take for granted. Highly recommended for anyone with an appreciation for science especially, undergrduates.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Power of Science is not the last answer but the next question
A gripping drama with the biggest question of all, what is life? That's what "The Eighth Day of Creation" is, a historical drama capturing the characters, the challenges, the thrills and disappointment that makes science the compelling endeavor that it is. It's unfortunate that this book has not been made into what would be a great mini-series.

4-0 out of 5 stars grasping the true nature of the virus!!
Gina Kolata's book is an informative look at the influenza pandemic of 1918.The author provides an opportunity to see the shortcomings of the world of science and medicine during that era.She alsodescribes the search for the genetic make-up of this virus during the 1990's and the difficulties encountered even with the advancements in those fields.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book!
This is a rare book. A history book that reads like a popular book. The author did an excellent job of covering a difficult subject with enough science to make it relevant, but with a style that makes it very interesting to read. Highly recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Get sick, get well, hang around the inkwell.
First the good. This timely and credible treatment of influenza fills a critical void. The book is very readable.Although concentrating on historical vignettes to the exclusion of scientific explanations, the book provides a helpful background for the consideration of risk, public policy, and personal preparation that arise from confusing, contradictory, and incomplete news items about flu outbreaks and related public health initiatives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scary and Wonderful
I'm thinking about going to medical school, and this book was recommended to me to get a flavor for what life is like as a medical student - particularly a slightly older, female, non-traditional student.
4-0 out of 5 stars Worth your time
For anyone who has considered attending medical school, this is an insightful tale. It's a realistic look at medical school from someone who is not necessarily a perfect student. I enjoyed this book very much.

Editorial Review

The history of madness and its treatment is a fascinating one.At one time, the mentally ill were diagnosed as demonically possessed; later, when mental illness became the province of psychoanalysts, those conditions that are actually physical in nature, such as schizophrenia or manic depression, went insufficiently treated, their sufferers consigned to asylums. 3-0 out of 5 stars A lot or information not easily presented.
First off, any attempt to chronicle the history of psychiatry is commendable. The radical changes in the perception of the mentally ill and the treatment of mental illness requires a great deal of research and discernment. However, I found this book more encyclopaedic than a fluent historical account. Personally, it will probably serve as more of a reference than a straight through read. It does include many interesting anecdotes, just not fluently enough for me to read as intended.

1-0 out of 5 stars Psychiatric hagiography
This is an unbalanced, often inaccurate, and entirely adulatory history of psychiatry, masquerading as scholarship.Shorter finally lost me at the point where he describes ice-pick lobotomies, of which he is mildly diapproving, as an "adventure."

2-0 out of 5 stars Shorter's opinion on the history of psychiatry
I really enjoyed the part of this book on the history of psychiatry. Unfortunately only about 60% of the book is on this topic and the rest consists of Shorter's unbalanced opinions. As a Psychiartic Registrar/resident slightly more simpathetic to the Biological approach, even I found this book extremely biased. Shorter's concrete style of reasoning makes him far more suitable to write a book on the history of surgery. The finer nuances and richness of the field of psychiatry is clearly outside his grasp. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Jam-packed with info on Development, sparse on Design
I couldn't put this book down.It contains a good description of instrumentation, including analog and digital filtering, signal conditioning, data acquisition. The authors' background is in cardiac care (pacemakers, etc.), and the book seems to focus a great deal on patient contact scenarios, whereas I would have preferred some discussion of instrumentation of other signals such as optical techniques (e.g. pulse oximetry), thermography, perhaps imaging technologies. It's a great book for anyone doing work with defibrillators/pacemakers, myography.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than expected
Not for the clinician, radiologist, or beginner MRI engineer. I agree with previous reviewer that the book resembles a set of notes, but they are excellent notes if you already know your MRI physics. The book is therefore nice to have for an overview, or reminder of a particular application (the preface *does* say "not meant for making a first acquaintance with MRI"). The images are quite acceptable (3rd ed) and well-chosen to demonstrate the ideas. Not 5 stars because the notes *are* too brief sometimes (another reviewer said shallow), making it impossible to fully understand, let alone implement, SENSE or Shinnar-LeRoux, for example, from just these notes.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good MRI introduction book
This is a good book for introducing MRI basics for non-experts. advanced scanning methods are discussed also. The applications section is very good and the references arevaluable.

1-0 out of 5 stars With my fullrespect to the Auther of this book
Poor images,Poor Graphics and shallow content! This book is not for any proffessional in the field of clinical MRI. I can say that this book is just a collection of short notes designed for Philips engineers. The price (almost $80) of this book does not match the quality of content, the quality of images and the graphics as well ( hand drawing & illustration). If you are philips engineer think twice before you buy this book otherwise think 100 times to buy it for 80 $. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I use this book extensively
This book is the required text of my dietetics coursework time and time again and thus I use it extensively. At first I resented the very large and heavy book, but more and more I find myself turning to it for answers, even for things that aren't school-related.My university has a book rental program.Previously I'd only rented the book, but now, as I sit inbetween semesters, I find myself missing it terribly. The moment the bookstore opens I will be buying this book for keeps.5-0 out of 5 stars Good information for the Healthy & ILL
It is a book that will answer all your questions regarding Food, Diet and Nutrition exactly as its title suggests.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!

3-0 out of 5 stars "ENTROPY IS TIMES ARROW," he says.
Stars are only for creativity. For example, he adds, "the cell is very much an entropy machine." (P. 265)A more attractive title to this book would have been LIVING WATER.Pollack scares half his readers away with the CELLS & GELS stuff.I also have no idea why the reader would plug through 14 chapters of gook to get to the last two which actually frame his thesis.Chapters 15 & 16 should have opened the book.
4-0 out of 5 stars very interesting book!
I find this book one of the best sources that explain cell biology topics rationally; It is a good companion with molecular biology of the cell (Alberts et al).The author simply discusses the foundation of cell biology concepts from the perspective of biophysics. What i really find valuable in this book is the author's critical discussions of the hypotheses behind the acceptable models in cell biology. One of the clear examples from part one of the book is the explanations of the drug pumps associated with drug resistance during the course of bacterial infection (the author mentioned tetracycline pump as an obvious example) and cancer. How have these pumps been originated?Do they present in these organisms before the treatment (perform different function(s), for example) or they have expressed as a kind of natural selection to resist the cell death by drugs and, thereby, generate cell successors resisting such drugs?!It is not necessary to accept every model in the book or even the reasons that the author provided since one phenomenon can be explained in many different ways..I highly recommend this book along with the undergraduate textbook "molecular biology of the cell" by Alberts et al..

1-0 out of 5 stars Speaking as a current PhD candidate in biophysics...
This book is funny as hell.Honestly.
