This is a very interesting view of the advances being made in the electronic area of medicine.

an inner journey
Atul Gawande's book "Complications" is a rewarding read on many levels.The reader is drawn in smoothly along a thread of entertaining medical vignettes.These anecdotes serve as the framework for a set of well reasoned essays that explore the inner life of the surgeon.Gawande's primary purpose is to convey thevarious challenges, surprises, and contradictions that he has encountered as a surgical resident.His scrupulous honesty in describing the motivations, limitations, exhilarations, foibles, and challenges of the surgical profession is refreshing.
Brilliantly written reflections of what it is to work in medicine
This book was required for a friend's ethics class and she could not stop talking about it! I had to read it, too, thanks to her. We are nursing students, about to embark on our clinical rotations, and have both been strongly affected by this real and wonderfully written book. Dr. Gawande really has captured everything for the reader, who is left profoundly more knowledgable about a challenging and difficult, but rewarding, profession. He is amazing!

A Glimpse Behind The Curtain
The medical profession, for much of its lifetime, has been shrouded in mystery. For many, the words and judgements of a doctor seem infallible, which is why there is often such incredulity associated with mistakes. It's only been in the past few decades that this has changed and people are learning that doctors are humans too. In Atul Gawunde's book, we get a behind the scenes look at his life as a resident in Internal Medicine and some of the truths that people must accept take place when they enter a hospital. What amazes me most about Gawunde's writing is his use of anecdotes to perpetuate his arguments and ideas. A+ For End of Chapter Problems
I had used this textbook at Ramapo College of New Jersey for Organic Chemistry I and II, and I found that the end of the chapter problems were superb in preparation for exams. I can't say much otherwise about the body of the text, reactions, mechanisms, etc., but I give this book an A+ for the End of Chapter Problems. They were tough and required a good amount of thought, which was exactly how I was tested in this class.

If you work in an ER or assessment setting...
I used this booklet as a quick reference in my work in a hospital ER and in doing intakes.It's meant to simply be a handy reference to the DSM criteria, and can't replace the study, consultation, and experience needed to understand the difference between clinically problematic and non-problematic behavior.If you work within the DSM/ICD/insurance system, and you've heard the phrase "justify your diagnosis" before, here's an invaluable and pocket-sized (well, for a big pocket) tool.

The Only DSM That You Need
This is a modest little book that you can fit into your pocket but it does everything that its big brother(the much more expensive, full version of the DSM IV-TR) does -- at half the price and with greater ease of use. While the unabridged DSM IV is pretty much a textbook of psychiatry, minus only treatment recommendations, this abridgement unpretentiously lists just the diagnostic categories and the relevent (concisely phrased) criteria. Professionals will find it a handy source of symptoms and diagnosis for insurance purposes. Non-professionals will find it usable for the purpose of diagnosing themselves, their spouse, their parents and problematic friends.

A Great Manual To Promote Mental Disorders !!!
The DSM IV-TR is a great book to promote diseases that fit the armaments of medications that the pharmaceutical companies would like physicians to use.

Clinical Anesthesiology
It is a good basic book that covers the essentilas very clearlyin not too long chapters. It is a good entry level book for doctors during their first year of residence in anesthesia.
Excellent!
This would be an optimal choice for most medical students with a special interest in anasthesia as well as for anaesthesia residents. It's extremely well-written, neither too detailed nor too simple. The authors write with authority, which is a good thing.
Still a great resource
I just updated my older, well read copy recently. This is still my favorite anesthesia resource, the book I grab when I want to refresh my memory about this or that.

BEST ORGANIC CHEMISTRY BOOK
I have read and used many books on organic chemistry, both on my BS and graduate degree programs. This book has been the best ever written on the subject. The authors have treated the subject to its simplest detail to be understood by everyone. Now that I am a practicing chemist, I always look at this book as a reference. The presentation is very good and the way the chapters are organized is very neat and arranged. The topic on synthesis in action and retrosynthetic analysis is very interesting. What I find very nice are the topics on the application of the chemical principles on real life synthesis. The information are all up to date. Stuart Warren and his co authors has gone a long way and their expertise is shown in this wonderful book. Warren has been one of myfavorite chenistry authors way back to his simple books on chemical synthesis and retrosynthetic analysis. I recommend this book, not only to students, both on their undergraduate and graduate programs but also to practicing chemist and chemical engineers and all those who love and find the field of chemistry a very interesting subject and those who wants to find chemical knowledge at a glance. Truly, this is a one volume Encyclopedia on Organic Chemistry.

Really learn organic chemistry
I learned organic as a sophomore with the popular text by Wade.While I did well in the course and text got me through, I found I remembered nothing 2 years later when preparing for a graduate level organic course.

Treat Your Own Neck
very clear and useful information.Has helped considerably with my neck pain and headaches.

I wish I had read this book 20 years ago!
This book is an easy read, with easy to follow pictures of how to do the exercises, some of which are so simple that I can do them in my car while sitting at a stoplight.The book shows how to do about 5 exercises that not only relieve neck pain -they ward off future occurences of it.Also helpful was the photos of postures to avoid while sitting, driving, and sleeping - I didn't know how important that was.I also recommend "Treat Your Own Back", also by Robin A. McKenzie.

Get New Updated version instead!
This book totally saved my life.I picked it up on the way to a Christmas craft fair I was working...and during the afternoon I did a few of the exercizes along with some in Treat Your Own Back.The relief was instant.I couldn'tbelieve it!The only thing about these books is that Robin McKenzie has updated his method and combined both books into "7-Steps to a Pain Free Life:How to Rapidly Relieve Back and Neck Pain" by Craig Kubey and Robin McKenzie.So...get the updated version instead! ... Must Have Text
This is a must have book for those who actually care to learn about implant dentistry from one of the leading figures in the field.Each chapter is well written and complete.You can access each chapter if you seek out specific information, or you can read the entire text front cover to last page.

For quite a few years this remains the most comprehensive and enjoyable book in my implant library.

I have been a practicing dentist for 29 years and restoring implants since 1991. These 'planners' are a great place to start when designing a treatment plan. They are the equivalent of a 'manual' that refreshes memory, assists with language and format- and gets you past the block. Its weaknesses lie in its treatment methods and assessment paradigm.Read more

I like this book so much I am buying copies for my students!
I have been a college student and subsequently a teacher of chemistry for a number of years now and this is the first book that has really impressed me enough so that I want to continue teaching from it for years to come.I think the writing is clear and at the appropriate level for junior college students in a general introductory course. We only cover the first 11 chapters in our quarter, but the content, problems, and photography are superb.

At last a text with up to date radiological anatomy of the head and neck. This is the single most useful and board relevant book on the market.I had the pleasure of using this text in accompaniment with Dr. Goljan's audio lectures from a review course.The two resources, audio and text, proved to be invaluable in both building my confidence and ability to disect the USMLE Step I exam.Additionally, the images used in the text and referenced in the audio lectures were in fact the very same pictures I saw on my test.I must clarify, however, the audio lectures are not sold with the text.They can, however, be found on the web for those who are really interested.

Forget the DSM!
I agree Dunn and Wolz have said it all regarding the PDM. I have only one criticism of this excellent diagnostic volume, that the descriptions of the disorders are too brief. However, its brevity in that regard is instantaneously forgotten when considering it presents mental health from a truly holistic perspective. Any clinician working in the field should have this book!

A Useful and Invaluable Resource for Psychotherapists of Most Clinical Orientations
When I first learned about the PDM, I was so intrigued about this much needed and exciting alternative to the DSM that I decided to develop a continuing education online course for psychotherapists, which provides a historical context and a systematized summary of the clinically most relevant part of the new manual.In this process I learned to appreciate that, unlike the DSM or the ICD, which focus exclusively on pathology, the PDM includes descriptions of healthy functional patterns and healthy personality.The new manual insists that personality be evaluated first, and symptoms considered as secondary, because symptoms cannot be understood, assessed, or treated in the absence of an understanding of the personality structure of the person who has the symptoms.While the PDM sees it as important to differentiate "personality disorder" from personality per se, the manual does not present a hard-and-fast dividing line between the two, but suggests a continuum of severity. In contrast to the DSM, the psychodynamic manual considers subjective experiences, typical relationship patterns, and ways of engaging in the therapeutic process in the description of a person's overall functioning.For each personality disorder, clinicians learn what transference and countertransference reactions to expect in the clinical hour and what treatment approach to consider.For many diagnoses the possible psychological roots of the client's problems are mentioned.The manual emphasizes that, depending on their evaluation of a client's location on this severity dimension, therapists need to behave with important differences in emphasis, level of activity, explicitness of boundary-setting, frequency of sessions, and other features of technique.It becomes clear that there is a continuum from exploratory to supportive treatment that correlates roughly with the level-of-organization dimension.I believe that the PDM is a useful and invaluable resource for psychotherapists of most clinical orientations.

Not "Everything" you need to know
Dr. Sears seems to have spent the better part of his children's lives writing books about which he has no experience.His relegation of the father's role to secondary exemplifies his own inadeqacies.Back to the book.I'm sure it's useful to those mothers and fathers who never had the oral tradition training for parenthood and need a little help, but I would much rather recommend other types of reading for parents and parents-to-be.Spend some time on Native American spirituality. A little more time on books dealing with your nutrition prior to conception(BOTH PARENTS.)Try some humor, like Nora Efron to keep your spirits balanced.Learn about your body, mind, and spirit and that of your child by reading and listening to Rayna Gangi. Dr. Sears.You may help those who have no clue, but you need some further reading yourself.

useful and complete
A very userful book especially for new parents. It doesn't take anything for granted telling you everything you should know about your child. I could find answers to very common and "normal" concerns about my baby, that no one told me before (as for exaple that babies are not silent while sleeping, being in perfect health!)and important suggestments to detect more serious illnesses (such as GERD!)

Just Try It Out, and you'll see it works for you
I received this book several years BEFORE I became a mother--and decided it seemed a little too much for me.There was NO WAY I would ever sleep with my baby, breastfeed for more than 8 months, or carry the baby EVERY WHERE I went.However, I did appreciate that they valued the relationship between parent and baby, and that they were respectful of the child's needs and abilities, as well as the parent's needs and abilities.They also had some helpful ideas about food allergies, which runs in my family.

A must have for the Cardiac Sonographer

This book, is very detailed but very user-friendly.It covers basic cardiac anomilies to the more detailed,(not so common)anomolies as well as signs and symptoms.This book covers adult as well as some pediatrics. Listed in alpphabetical order, they are easily accessed.The last section covers all formulas and methods, with calculations. The best echo reference

Complicated and Deep
This is a good exposition of mindfulness theory and practice. Althought a novice therapist will find the text useful, most of the insight gained by reading this text will be achieved by therapists with 5 to 10 years actual practice under their belts. I would advise novice therapists to buy this book immediately and then delve into each chapter several times per month for the next few years. They will never regret it. The problem and promise on this book is that it requires you to go back and review each concept of your original training, whether it is Adlerian, Freudian, Cognitive or Christian. Mindfulness is the goldplating overlay that makes your therapy more valuable.

A special collection about nothing special
As a psychotherapist for 30 years and a mindfulness practitioner for nearly 10 years, I have read a lot of good books and articles on both subjects."Mindfulness and Psychotherapy" is as clear and helpful in both disiplines as any I have encounted.The editors have done a 'mindful' job in selecting from an array of perspectives.Mindfulness is defined and contextualized for our western psychotherapeutic practice, while also placed in an historical and cultural framwork that informs and enlightens our understanding. Indeed the more philosophical essays are perhaps the strongest pieces in this marvelous compendium. We are reminded that the Buddah saw himself as a physician who sought to diagnose and find a cure for human suffering.Out of his own intimate encounter with suffering, he devised and revised a program that we in western psychological science are just now testing and finding curative-both for our clients and for ourselves.

This "Upgrade" is a Real Downgrade
Overview:
Excellent Condition
The book i received was in excellent condition, it was listed under the used section, but when i received it, it was still in the original packing. The only problem was the CD was missing somehow, no big deal.

great pits
When I first used this book in undergrad I did not like it very much, however, in medical school, I found this book to be a huge asset.It is great for someone who learns visually and condenses all the info on to a few pages, my medical school bio chem book took 30 pages to explain what this book does in a few.Also, I like the way this book is organized, it seems to flow.... the only chapter that seemed to need a little work was nucliotide mab.. Undergrad texts seem to stress more chemistry and enzyme mechanics, while med school will stress inh points.Also, photosythesis is not covered in med school, vitamins are not covered in this text ... A must read
If you are on a anethesia rotation this is a must have. Easy to read and helps you with all aspects of your rotation.

Excellent introduction
Unlike some people, I found this book to be very readable, which in my opinion makes it an excellent choice to start off your anesthesia training with.I found that it offers a quick run-through of most topics.Unfortunately, I haven't opened this book since I finished my first year.Instead I go to the more detailed texts.I'm not sure about studying for the boards from it.It doesn't seem to me like it has enough information.But anyways, I think that it's a great introduction and I have to say that it helped me many, many times during my first few months in anesthesia.I would buy this book again.

A must for the written boards
Do yourself a favor when you start to REALLY study for the writtens.Take ALL of your other anesthesia books and stack them in the corner across the room.Then sit down and basically KNOW THIS BOOK FRONT TO BACK (about 4 or 5 different colors of highlighter is about right).Take a bunch of practice exams (the MGH workbook is pretty good) and you'll be ready to knock back a few cold ones the night after you smoke the writtens. Works for the Re-cert also.
