39th Edition of Gray's Anatomy (Susan Standring, Ed.)
Totally distinct from earlier editions is the radically different organization of this classical textbook: the human body is no longer described as containing different systems - the skeleton, the vascular system, the nervous system,...- but the body is now divided in regions. The reason for this radical change, chief editor Susan Standring (King's College, London) explains, is that in the real world, practising clinicians in their daily practice use a regional approach, rather than a systemic view. Therefore, it is understood that the new, 39th Edition of Gray's Anatomy is more adapted to the needs of surgeons, radiologists and other clinicians, than to medical students or scientists interested in the area of human anatomy. However, there is some consideration of the editors for a section `systemic overview'. So, the endocrine system, the blood (haematopoietic) and immune system are not entirely overlooked.
THE book
This is the only anatomy book you will need, as a physician or med student, and it is beatiful to the eyes too.

Great Resource
I have used this book extensively in family medicine clinic and it is a great resource.I only gave it 4 stars because I thought the pages in the previous version were easier to read with larger print, particularly for my geriatric patients.The newer edition has updated handouts but the design is not as patient friendly.It would also be nice to see the text come with a CD ROM of the text in pdf formats to print patient handouts from.

Most important book in my library.
Every certified athletic trainer, primary care physician, coach, or anyone else who has contact with the injured athlete should own this book. I use this text every day. It is the most useful resource in my professional library. This book is so easy to understand it makes an excellent text for parents of active young people. Dr. Rouzier's book is a "home run".

Every Office Should Have This Book!

Wonderful Book!!!
This book is excellent for all the new surgical technologists and ST students out there! This book lays it down in simple, almost layman-like terms but is very thorough. Read before you take chemistry 101.
I bought this book as a supplement to my Chemistry 101 textbook.I was really looking for a more complete explanation of electron configuration, which I didn't find this book to be that helpful with.Overall, I thought this book helped to reinforce some of the basic concepts, but didn't really have much of an impact on my grade.I would recommend this book to someone who wants an overview of chemistry before taking the course or to someone who needs to brush up on basic chemistry before taking a more advanced course.It can also be helpful if you're having trouble with a particular topic.I did enjoy the supplemental information in the book having to do with chemistry of everyday life.

No Dummy would ever take Chemistry
One thing I always enjoyed about the "for Dummies" series is the sense of humor and real realism in them. This book does an OK job, and is written by a Professor who understands what students struggle with and tries to make it as simple as possible. But Chemistry is a very complex and vast subject, no one book could contain every aspect of it. This book should be seen as a review or a brush up on chemistry, it by no means covers all the topics you will take in a Inorganic Chemistry class, especially the farther you go into the semester. The fact is most people who will be using this book are those students entering into Inorganic Chemistry, or General Chemistry. I do feel he could devote a few of the chapters to topics that will discussed in most Inorganic chemistry textbooks instead of such things as Organic Chemistry, which is a subject unto itself, air pollution, water pollution, and chemistry in the home for example. All relevant topics, but not really going to help you get a passing grade on a test. This is a supplement to your textbook that I feel is well worth spending a few bucks on and using it to your advantage.

Excellent introduction to chemistry!
This book is an excellent introduction to chemistry. If all 'for dummies' books are as good as this one, I will certainly buy more of them. I have a background in natural sciences myself (master's degree in mathematics), but I never studied chemistry at the university (or in high school for that matter). Given this background, I was afraid that a 'for dummies' book would be too dumbed down. I was happy to learn that this is not the case. I was surprised at the degree of understanding I got from this book. You actually learn how electrons take part in reactions (valence numbers and all that), and how to do simple calculations. This means that you learn enough theory to predict to a certain extent what will happen in a reaction. In addition there are lots of real life examples, with chapters on organic chemistry, pollution, chemistry in the home, and so on. This book is not meant to replace a university text book of course, but I doubt if you learn more theory than this in a high school course in chemistry. Actually I would think you learn less in a high school course, since I think some of the topics would be difficult for high school students. But of course you learn to do a few experiments in high school, which this book could never teach you (it would probably be irresponsible to try this in self-study book). ... Read more

The Neuroscience of Psychotherapy

Excellent Review and Exploration
Cozolino's text presents a very complicated topic in an extremely accessible manner, owing to a straightforward writing style and a penchant for perfectly applicable example case studies. He breaks down the functioning of the brain into "digestible" chunks and builds throughout the text on earlier learning. If you work in the field of counseling or psychotherapy, you simply cannot go wrong by reading this book and supplementing your knowledge of neuroscience-psychotherapy connection.

An outstanding piece of synthesis.Buy it.
This book is simply a masterpiece in presenting neuroscience relevant to the both researchers in braod areas of psychological science and therapists.The presentation of brain specific information is assured, clear and reasonably well referenced.The book always connects brain regions with manifested behaviours and psychological symptoms.There is so much clarity in the text that it really deserves a very wide audience way beyond what its title suggests.The book embraces aspects of affective and evolutionary neuroscience, ties them to human consciousness development and identifies specific brain developments that cause us to be who we are.The piece of the development of the parietal lobes is one of the best I have ever read.The author has a gift for communication, and this is so rare in neuroscience books that the stands proud of the rest.The tripartite brian, psychology and psycotherapeutic connections are presented with out propagandising one at the expense of the other.There is a degree of good quality speculation in the book from time to time which could set its own research agenda.I will conclude by saying that do give a longer review would runs the risk of spoiling the lively and surprising erudition of the author.Definitely a book worth reading, worth keeping and certainly if you loan it out, you may have trouble getting it back. ... Excellent Rehab Book
This book is an excellent resource for any Certified Athletic Trainer, experienced or entry-level. Several rehab protocols are outlined for many common injuries seen in athletics as well as the general population. There is a general review of anatomy as well that proves helpful.

Won't leave home without it!
I am new at this prescribing thing and seem to have a whole lot more questions than I have answers... The Prescriber's Guide truly is "Essential" ... I have long been a fan of Stahl and his ability to make dry and difficult material come to life and thereby easier to understand ... even makes me laugh ... I can not say enough good things about this book- it offers a wealth of practical "real world" information about prescribing and answers "newbie" questions that typically beget the "you'll learn that with experience" answer. An absolute MUST HAVE for the novice prescriber- thank you Stephen Stahl!

A useful and inspiring resource
This book, intended for therapists, is a comprehensive, compassionate, and accessible guide to what Najavits establishes is the first crucial step for someone struggling with PTSD and substance abuse: learning to feel safe. It is also an excellent resource for patients who want to help themselves. What I like best is that the book is filled with checklists, stories, exercises, and quotations such that I can open to nearly any page and find ideas that are both practical and inspirational. In short, this is a great book.

A Very Powerful Book
Thank you for writing such a great book.I have suffered from addictions for years, tried many books and many methods.Working with a group or individual is one thing, but for me, nothing helps more than a book.It's on call twenty four hours a day and I can easily reference it.As far as books go...this one is by far the best.The most comprehensive and in-depth book I've read so far.It provided tremendous support and guidance on issues that often result in isolation. Most of all, it didn't talk down to me as a reader.That's something I don't need!Thank you for making this book available and writing it in such a helpful way.

Overly generalized
When I bought this book, I was expecting helpful solutions, but all I got were general facts that most parents of autistic children already know.The book definitely needed more specific information on how to handle problems.

This book is a must read for parents with an autistic child. This book is easy to read and understand. Dr. Greenspan has made me feel I will be able to help my son fully recover.This is the 1st time in 3 years I have hope!My son is moderate to severly autistic. We have been doing Floortime & have seen much success. What a natural way of helping him & having fun doing it.Thank you Dr. Greenspan.

Too Much Engaging and Too Little Information
I have been a Learning Specialist for nearly twenty years at the high school and community college levels.When I read "Engaging Autism" by Stanley I. Greenspan, I was anticipating a book filled with fresh information, scientific validity, and ideas that could be realistically applied in a variety of classroom settings.Instead, I read page after page of disappointment.DIR/Floortime is an interesting/innovative approach for helping individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other developmental disabilities.However, this book was extremely weak in the following areas:repetition of the same ideas/concepts throughout the work, reliance on anecdotal information, no scientific validation of information, absence of an in-depth bibliography, frequent reference to products written by Greenspan and his team, and lack of organization throughout the text.DIR/Floortime is presented as too simplistic when in actuality it appears to be extremely time consuming and labor instensive which is impractical in contemporary public education settings.The author recommends homeschooling and intense family involvement as though this was a simple solution.However, parents uusually do not have the extensive time or expertise to devote to the DIR/Floortime approach.If you are interested in learning what DIR/Floortime entails, I recommend researching Internet sources or consulting works by other authors.This book is largely a waste of time for professionals in the field of special education.Unless you want to read a rehash of ideas over and over again, I would not waste my time with this book.I was going to order another book by Dr. Greenspan entitled "The Child With Special Needs:Encouraging Intellectual and Emotional Growth" but will not be doing it at this time.

Also Good for Fathers-To-Be
One of the very few stipulations my wife made after we learned we were going to have a child is that I read this book by the doyenne of natural childbirth in the U.S. While the tone of the book is much too touchy-feely/hippyish for me, I have to admit that it is well worth reading regardless of whether you're planning a natural childbirth or a fully tech'ed out hospital one. That said, it would be very easy to read it as gospel and get swept up in its giddy repudiation of modern medicine, so one should approach it with, if not a skeptical eye, at least with one's critical faculties fully engaged. There is also the potential that readers who are fully committed to a hospital birth may come away from this book feeling scolded, or as if their decision is somehow"wrong".
Ina May is an Inspiration to all women
I read Ina May's book "Spiritual Wifery" and was inspired to get a midwife for the birth of my child (I am now 34 weeks).This book is even better thatn the 1st because it is 1) up to date, 2)has clear recommendations on what to do to have an unmedicated birth and 3) full of science and positive birth stories, she separates fact from fiction.And there's a lot of fiction out there concerning birth in the USA!Every woman should read this book, especially pregnant women.

I love all of Ina May's books, but this one is, hands down, the best book on childbirth out there. It tottaly changed my perceptions on childbirth, my body, etc., and it is very informative when it comes to the topic of interventions and the choices that women have. ... Read more

surface but instructive
I had great hopes for this book. After I glanced at it, I purchased it immediately. It certainly does reorient you to the distinctions between goals, objectives and diagnoses, but after using it for a while, it just wasn't sufficient for those more complicated kids. I'll keep referring to it, not so much for information but to place me back on course when I'm stuck and blocked- (happens more than I'd like, when the stress gets to me,) yet I still would suggest, for more seasoned professionals, a higher level of diagnostic and prescriptive content. A great aid for clinicains.
If you work with adolescent this is a great aid to writing treatment plans for a beginner or a skilled clinician. It makes following this state regulations a lot easier.I would definitely recommend this book to all my colleagues.This book has helped me write treatment plans quicker and easier then I ever thought possible.I love this series of books.

A godsend for the busy clinician
I work in a mental health agency as an intake clinician, interviewing families and children and writing assessments to be used for case disposition and treatment planning.I see 4-6 families weekly and my work load has been eased enormously with this addition to my library.It sits right next to my DSM-IV and I use it daily.The language for long term goals and therapeutic interventions are clinically sound and there are a number of options in each to tailor for specific cases. ... Not quite what I expected
Zollinger's features very good illustrations and notes (including postoperative care) for nearly every imaginable procedure in gastrointestinal surgery (including exotic and complex operations such as total pancreatectomy and Klatskin tumor resections), short of bariatric surgery. Truely one of the most successful books of the kind, the strucure is well designed, the operations included cover a eide range of procedures, and most noticeble is the very high quality of the explanatory figures, sometimes by just brawsing through them you get 80% of what to do... the text is well written and concise. You will find many approaches for each operation. of course it will be impossible to gather all the surgical craft in one book. but this one succeeds in collecting a large chunk of it. i highly recommend it for all juniors and postgrads alike. ... Real Help for Parents and Therapists
Very helpful for therapists and parents who want to use the Collaborative Problem Approach with explosive kids.Using plenty of examples and scripts, Drs. Green and Ablon help to walk people through the approach, through common pitfalls, and provide guidance and support for therapists working with families.A must-read for every family therapist and teacher who has ever worked with an explosive child.

Creating a better world
I am reading "Treating the Explosive Child" and simply cannot put this book down - if everyone incorporated this approach into everyday life, what a humane world it could be.Thank you, Dr Ablon and Green for the expertise you are sharing and disseminating to the world - in my eyes, you are true heroes.

Finally an answer
Ever since my child was about 4 I have been wondering what he "had"....what his behavioral issues were all about.Three therapists later, psychological testing, and countless offerings of advice from friends, parents and teachers I have finally found an explanation that rings true and speaks to my husband and me. My son is now 14.How I wish I had known about this "CPS approach" years ago. The approach is not "Magic 123" (and therefore simplistic) but if it's followed, it works.I first read Dr. Greene's other book aimed at parents called "The Explosive Child" which is also wonderful."Treating Explosive Kids" is directed at therapists and is therefore more dense and a little more difficult to understand for the lay person but the book is filled with dialogue between professionals, parents, and kids which brilliantly and realistically illustrates how to treat a child who is inflexible, explosive, and therefore incredibly frustrating.Guess what:these kids are not simply being manipulative or looking for attention. ...
